Those who live here can enjoy a quality of life in which human lives can truly flourish. But, of course there are aspects of life here that also present tremendous challenges to faithful Catholics. I think you already know what those things are. In many ways our country has abandoned God and that puts us in a precarious situation. Sooner or later we will reap what we have sown, perhaps we are already doing so. As we celebrate tomorrow perhaps we should each make an effort to come to Mass to pray for this great nation and thus do something positive to help our people. Our Mass times are as usual. God bless America!! Father Fasching will be gone this week but Father Kovalcin will be here to celebrate the 8:30 a.m. Masses all week. I will be taking the 7:00 a.m. Latin Masses and Padre Juan Antonio will have the 7:00 p.m. Spanish Masses on Tuesday and Thursday. It has been a little crazy this summer trying to keep all of our daily Masses going because our vacation schedules make it challenging to say the least. Please consider helping us with the catechetical program beginning in September. We need some catechists and some helpers. We estimate that we will have about 300 children in our religious education program and so we need many catechists and helpers. If you can help please let us know in the parish office as soon as possible. We want to be prepared and we want to prepare those who volunteer so that they have a good experience. I am still waiting to hear from the sisters from El Salvador regarding whether or not they were able to get their work visas to come here to the U.S. We should be hearing something very soon I would think. Please say a little prayer that all goes well in this regard. I will let you know as soon as we hear something. July 3, 2016 Because many people take vacations away from the parish during the summer months our weekly collection at the Masses is greatly reduced. I would like to urge everyone to take this into account and think ahead so that your weekly offering continues even though you might be absent from the parish. We depend so much on everyone’s co-operation in this important aspect of our community life. Please be generous and consistent in your giving. Your sacrifice will be noted by God who will generously reward you. readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life. Have a good and safe Fourth of July holiday and again God bless our great nation. Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat Sincerely yours, Father Timothy Davison Treasures From Our Tradition It’s high summer now , school is out, the pace of work slow, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “ among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, bur Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed -James Field, Copyright © J.S. Paluch Co. The Final are not quite in but it looks likely that the Carnival has brought in over $8,000.00 after expenses have been paid. That is really good and that money will go toward reducing the debt on the new chapel. That debt now stands at $45,565.71. Slowly but surely it is disappearing. Thanks to all of our benefactors. If anyone would like to help us reduce it even further please write check a check to Sts. Peter and Paul Church and Put “for the St. Toribio Chapel” on the memo of the check. - Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, copyright © J.S. Paluch Co.
