Con todas las miradas puestas en el gran evento deportivo que se celebra en Valencia hasta el
próximo 4 de julio, la Louis Vuitton, lanzamos a la calle
el tercer número de Nautic News con un claro objetivo:
que los contenidos de la revista le inviten a poner rumbo a Menorca en sus travesías de verano. Además de
los placeres del mar y de los cruceros costeros para
descubrir todos los rincones del litoral menorquín, en
la isla podrá degustar un capricho muy especial: el vino
que elaboran las bodegas recientemente asociadas
bajo el nombre de Vimenorca. Le descubrimos además
la pasión por la vela latina del colectivo Amigos del Mar
de Menorca y le proponemos una excursión por un entorno de belleza singular: Cala Pilar, en la costa norte.

4th of July, we are launching the third edition of Nautic
News with a clear objective: that the contents of this
magazine may invite you to head towards Menorca during your summer cruises. Alongside the pleasures of
the sea and cruises to discover all the corners of the
menorcan coastline, on the island you will be able to
treat yourself to taste the local wine elaborated by recently associated wineries under the name Vimenorca.
We will also reveal the group Amigos del Mar de Menorca (Friends of the Sea of Menorca) passion for sailing
and we propose an excursion in an environment of outstanding beauty: Cala Pilar, on the north coast.

Preserving Sea Heritage

enorca cuenta con una larga tradición marítima que se extiende por todo el Mediterráneo a lo largo de su historia. La riqueza de su patrimonio marítimo se ha visto afectada por
los cambios de índole social que se han sucedido con
el paso de los años y que también han supuesto una
transformación de la navegación menorquina. La actividad del sector pesquero ha ido decreciendo mientras el
sector turístico, la pesca y la navegación de recreo han
experimentado un importante desarrollo y han dado lugar a una importante oferta de actividades náuticas.
Constituida en junio de 1990, la asociación Amigos del
Mar de Menorca trabaja para la preservación del patrimonio marítimo de la isla ante la falta de iniciativas
que, en este sentido, promueven las administraciones
públicas. Este colectivo sin ánimo de lucro se dedica a
la divulgación y conservación de un rico patrimonio formado por botes y llaüts y la navegación con vela latina
a fin de mantener viva esta tradición.
Por este motivo, la asociación impulsa actividades encaminadas a:

enorca has a long maritime tradition that
extends along the Mediterranean coast
throughout its history. Over the years, the
richness of the islands sea heritage has seen itself affected by constant social change that has also meant a
transformation in menorcan sailing. Fishing activity has
decreased whilst the tourism sector and recreational
fishing and sailing have seen an important development, opening a new door to a considerable offer in
nautical activities.
Formed in June 1990, the association “Amigos del Mar
de Menorca” (Friends of the Sea of Menorca) works to
preserve the sea legacy due to lack of initiative in this
sense shown by public administration. This non-profit
organisation is dedicated to conserving a rich inheritance formed by boats and Latin sail boats in order to
maintain this tradition alive.
The association promotes activities focused on:
- Promoting investigation and publication of reports regarding sea heritage.
- Promoting sailing using Latin sail boats
- Supporting any initiative looking to preserve heritage.

Con 110 socios en toda la isla,
Amigos del Mar de Menorca dispone de un local cedido por el
Ayuntamiento en el puerto de
Ciutadella que se inauguró en
marzo de 2005. Se trata de un
antiguo lavadero público donde la entidad lleva a cabo sus
reuniones periódicas y que sirve además de taller donde los
asociados restauran embarcaciones donadas por particulares
o, incluso, reparan sus propias embarcaciones de vela
con el asesoramiento del profesional que se encarga
del taller. “La Montse” es la embarcación que, ahora
mismo, se encuentra en manos expertas para reparar
sus desperfectos antes de salir de nuevo a navegar por
aguas menorquinas.

for workshops in which members have the opportunity to restore boats donated by private
owners, or even to restore or

“La Montse” is the name of the
boat that, at this moment, is in
expert hands to repair all damage before it sails again in the
islands waters. An important area in which the association is involved is that of offering lessons in sailing,
at its “School of Classical Sailing” that has now been
running for 11 years. The Schools objective is to bring
the whole philosophy of traditional navigation nearer to
the islands population, highlighting the fact that as well
as being extremely relaxing, this type of sailing is totally
respectful with the environment causing no contamination or noise.

de la isla. “Besitos” fue donada a la
asociación por Palmiro Andreu y fue
objeto de un laborioso proceso de recuperación hasta
su botadura en el mar. El primer paso de este proyecto consistió en el estudio de las características del
buque y el diseño de los planos a partir de un curso
de diseño naval que en 195 impartieron Isidro Oliveres
y Antonio Rodríguez. Fue preciso un laborioso trabajo de recopilación de material gráfico que permitiera
trabajar en el diseño de la embarcación así como
conocer con detalle las características de la nave:
líneas de agua, construcción, perfiles, materiales…
Desde su puesta en funcionamiento, “Besitos” se
ha convertido en embajador de la cultura marítima
de Menorca. Participa en los encuentros que se
organizan en Cataluña, Valencia y Murcia además
de ser el buque escuela donde los alumnos aprenden a manejar las velas como antaño, maniobrar
en buenas condiciones de mar y de viento, entender el funcionamiento de las velas y orientarlas.
“Amigos del Mar de Menorca” has a boat named “Besi
tos”, of 40 inches and movement of 4,41 Trb. “Besitos”
is used for Sailing School practical lessons and also
for sea excursions that include all the ingredients of the islands sea tradition. “Besitos” was
donated to the association by Palmiro Andreu
and was subject to a laborious process of recuperation until its launching. The first part of this
project consisted in studying the ships characteristics and the design of its plans in a course of
naval design held in 1995 by Isidro Oliveres and
Antonio Rodríguez. A laborious task of compilation of graphic material was necessary to enable
work on the original design of the ship and also
to get to know its former characteristics: water
lines, construction, outlines, materials etc…
Since “Besitos” has been up and running, it has
become ambassador of Menorca’s sea culture.

Encuentros
La tercera vertiente de la actividad que desarrolla este
colectivo es la organización de encuentros de embarcaciones de vela latina. El próximo mes de julio tendrá
lugar la XIX edición del Encuentro de Embarcaciones
Clásicas que, cada año, reúne en la bahía de Fornells
unos 30 llaüt de Menorca, Mallorca y procedentes de
la Península. El año pasado, además, convocaron la
primera edición de un segundo encuentro en aguas de
Port Addaia que se suma a las concentraciones que se
convocan coincidiendo con las procesiones marítimas
de El Carmen o la festividad de San Pedro, cuya celebración se concentra junto al mar. De hecho, la actividad
de Amigos del Mar de Menorca sitúa a esta entidad a la
cabeza del archipiélago balear y toda la costa catalana
en cuanto a volumen de encuentros de vela latina.
Entre las actuaciones que quieren emprender en un
futuro, destacan la realización de una exposición etnográfica sobre el patrimonio marítimo de la isla y la elaboración de un catálogo para recuperar el vocabulario
marítimo.

Amongst the activities that the association wishes to
carry out in the future, an ethnographic exposition about
the islands sea heritage and the creation of a catalogue
to recuperate sea vocabulary stand out.

este respecto, cabe destacar que este nuevo modelo

located behind the helm seat, which gives extra fridge
space for drinks etc…
The helm console is arranged so that all the instruments
can be read with comfort and ease, paying special attention to keep the design in harmony with the simple elegance of the whole suite. Overall the Menorquin Yacht
145 stands out for its bright interior enhanced by tones
of teakwood and the fabric panelling used for its decoration.

la declaración de Reserva de Biosfera por parte
de la UNESCO. Se trata
de un capricho elaborado
con esmero por un reducido grupo de viticultores
cuyo trabajo está dando
sus primeros frutos. El esfuerzo de los bodegueros
por recuperar la actividad
vinícola en la isla hizo posible que, en el año 2002,
las primeras producciones se ampararan en la
indicación
geográfica
de “Vi de la Terra” y que
cuatro años después –en
diciembre de 2006– se
constituyera una nueva
asociación de elaboradores “Vimenorca”.
Dicha asociación está
formada por seis de las
siete bodegas existentes
en la isla: Binifadet, Binitord, Hort de Sant Patrici,
Sa Cudia, Celler Solano
de Menorca y Vi de s’Illa,
quienes elaboran el “Vi de
la Terra Illa de Menorca”
bajo las peculiares condiciones que ofrece un
territorio como Menorca. Se trata de un producto elaborado bajo unas condiciones medioambientales muy
determinadas, un capricho de la naturaleza escaso y de
producción reducida que se caracteriza por su calidad.
“Estamos ante un producto para sibaritas, para quienes gustan de la buena gastronomía que ofrece la isla,
se interesan por la cultura local y reconocen la calidad
de unos caldos elaborados de forma tradicional y artesanal”, comenta Andrés Martínez Jover, presidente
de “Vimenorca”. Durante su mandato de dos años que
estrenó a finales de 2005, el colectivo que preside se

proves as an ideal environment of high ecological value in which to enjoy new pleasures, such
as its delicious wine selection. This selection of
wine is elaborated with
great care by a reduced
number of vine growers
whose work is now giving
its first results. The effort

by local wine manufacturers made it possible in
2002 for the first product
to be supported by the
geographical trademark
“Vino de la tierra” (Wine of
the land) and four years
later (in December 2006)
a new association of
wine producers emerged
named “Vimenorca.”
This association is formed
by six of the seven existing wineries on the island:
Binifadet, Binitord, Hort
de Sant Patrici, Sa Cudia,
Celler Solano de Menorca and Vi de s’Illa, whom
all produce “Vino de la
Tierra Isla de Menorca”
(Wine of the land Island
of Menorca) under the peculiar conditions offered by
a territory such as Menorca. A product elaborated under very determined environmental conditions, a scarce
treat of nature of reduced production and characterised
for its high quality.
“We are facing a product for sybarites, for those who
enjoy the fine gastronomy that the island offers, who are
interested in local culture and recognise the quality of
wine that is handmade in the traditional manner”, comments Andrés Martínez Jover, President of “Vimenorca”.
His two year presidency began at the end of 2005 dur-

de la restauración, se han realizado varias campañas
de degustación y, para este año, está prevista la celebración de la primera ferial anual donde el Vino de la
Tierra Isla de Menorca sea el gran protagonista.
El segundo reto de la asociación es incrementar los
controles de calidad de la uva y el vino que se elabora
en la isla para lograr, en un plazo de 5 años, la calificación de vino de calidad con Denominación de Origen.
Y el tercer objetivo es promover el turismo enológico
aprovechando el enorme potencial que ofrece Menor-

Actualmente, los nueve viñedos que se han
creado en la isla ocupan más de 20 hectáreas,
están distribuidos en todos los municipios y tienen una extensión de entre 0,5 y 7 hectáreas.
Las cuatro bodegas que están en funcionamiento en estos momentos producen 60.000
litros de vino o, lo que es lo mismo, alrededor
de 80.000 botellas, según los datos del pasado
ejercicio. Los vinos designados con la mención
Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca deben proceder exclusivamente de cepas plantadas en
la isla de las variedades Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Monestrell, Tempranillo y Syrah, para
los vinos tintos, y Chardonnay, Macabeo, Malvasía, Moscatel, Perellada y Moll, para los caldos blancos.

In first place, the wine association wants to present itself to Menorca’s society as a sector that has managed
to reach maturity and, alongside local administrations,
works to increment knowledge of the world of wine between the Islands residents themselves. To date, and
thanks to complicity with the catering sector, various
tasting campaigns have been organised and, this year
celebration of the first yearly wine fair is planned, in
which “Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca” (Wine of the
land, Island of Menorca) will be the main star.
The second challenge for the association is to increase
quality controls on the grape and the wine made in the
island, to gain, within a 5 year term, the qualification of
high quality wine with Guarantee of Origin.
And the third objective is promotion of ethnic tourism
making the most of the enormous potential offered by
Menorca, whose wineries with similar characteristics to
those of French style have small wine cellars with 4 or
5 hectares of vineyards for individual production. There
are wineries in almost all the island’s municipalities and
each one of them has its own product and cultivation
peculiarities. This is why, from “Vimenorca” we understand that the creation of a wine route in Menorca could
result as a very attractive way for visitors to get to know

Antecedentes históricos

El testimonio documental de la existencia de plantaciones de viña en Menorca se remonta al año
1764, cuando la isla se encontraba bajo la segunda
dominación británica. Desde tiempos antiguos, se
elaboraron en Menorca caldos artesanales muy
preciados que fueron exportados en barcos por la
flota británica por el Mediterráneo. La aparición de
la filoxera en 1891 arrasó prácticamente las viñas
menorquinas y, si bien después se introdujo la cepa
americana, la isla no recuperó su esplendor vinícola.
Aunque no existen datos fiables, se calcula que
la superficie de viña plantada superaba las 600
hectáreas, con zonas de cultivo importantes en
los municipios de Alaior, Sant Climent, Sant Lluís i
Ciutadella. Entre las variedades de uva cultivada,
las más importantes fueron calop, moscatel, imperial, esturell, de planta, cariñena, babarrés y giró.
Documental evidence of the existence of vineyard plantations in Menorca dates back to 1764,
when the island was under the second British
domain. From the olden days highly valued home
made wines of Menorca were exported by ships
of the British fleet across the Mediterranean. The
arrival of filoxera in 1891 practically destroyed all
the islands vineyards and although afterwards
the American vine was introduced, the island never recovered its wine producing splendour.
Even though no reliable data is available, it is believed that the amount of land covered by vineyard
plantations was once over 600 hectares, with important cultivation areas in the municipalities of Alaior,
Sant Climent, Sant Lluís and Ciutadella. Amongst
the varieties of grape that were cultivated, the most
important were calop, moscatel, imperial, esturell,

of a product thought to serve the catering sector and as
a special treat from the island.
In the near future, the Islands wine producers are hoping to increase production destined to exportation to
two important markets: Great Britain and Germany, markets that are formed by many well educated sybarites,
who usually welcome this kind of offer. The main rivals
of “Wine of the land, Island of Menorca” are the wines
of “La Rioja”, which are the most sold in the Balearic
Islands. Nevertheless, the “Vimenorca” association is
aware that at this moment it is impossible to compete
in price and in production levels with “La Rioja” wines.
This is why, wine from Menorca must continue to focus
on quality remembering that its best device is that it is
one of natures special treats.

modelo francés, cuentan con 4 o 5 hectáreas de viña
para su producción. Existen bodegas en casi todos los
municipios de la isla y cada una de ellas tiene sus propias peculiaridades en cuanto a producto y en cuanto a
tipo de explotación. En este sentido, desde “Vimenorca” entienden que la creación de una ruta del vino en
Menorca puede resultar muy atractiva para que los visitantes puedan conocer de primera mano el ambiente
que rodea la elaboración de un vino y, en este sentido,
apreciar aún más la calidad de un producto pensado
para nutrir el sector de la restauración y como regalo
de la isla.
A medio plazo, los bodegueros se plantean aumentar
la producción que se destina a la exportación con la
mirada puesta en dos mercados europeos muy concretos: Gran Bretaña y Alemania, dos mercados cultos y
sibaritas, muy receptivos a este tipo de propuestas. El
gran competidor del Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca son los caldos de La Rioja, los que más se venden
en el conjunto de las Islas Baleares. Aunque desde la
asociación “Vimenorca” tienen muy claro que se no se
puede competir ni en precio ni en producción. El vino
de Menorca debe seguir apostando por la calidad ya
que su mejor baza es el hecho de ser un capricho de
la naturaleza.

l leasing es una
práctica financiera
altamente utilizada
en el campo internacional
por su gran flexibilidad.
Originaria de los EstadosUnidos, esta fórmula de
financiación complementaria permite ir pagando la
inversión de un bien conforme se va creando.
En nuestro país el crecimiento registrado en los
últimos años por este tipo de contrato dentro del ámbito
de la náutica ha sido importante y, actualmente, un 20
por ciento de las embarcaciones se adquieren mediante esta solución financiera aproximándonos a la situación de países vecinos, como Francia e Italia, donde la
mayoría de los barcos de recreo se financian a través
del leasing.
El contrato, que consiste en el alquiler de la nueva embarcación con opción de compra a la finalización del
arrendamiento, es factible para todos los barcos homologados en las categorías A, B o C. El perfil más usual
de arrendatario es el de un aficionado que quiere alquilar una embarcación y mantener durante el contrato
de leasing intacta su opción de compra, para acabar
siendo propietario del barco.
Francia ha sido el primer país europeo en otorgar estatuto jurídico para el leasing y entre las empresas que
comercializan esta fórmula náutica en España destacan CGMer y SGB Finance, ambas representadas por
GYLF Iberia en su calidad de broker financiero de reconocido prestigio internacional.
Las condiciones del leasing francés con bandera española, tanto para arrendatarios españoles como para los
residentes en España, contempla unos requisitos básicos. En primer lugar, la embarcación debe ser nueva y
de eslora superior a los 8 metros. El arrendatario, por
su parte, se hará cargo del pago del impuesto de matriculación y su gestión en la capitanía marítima correspondiente a su zona de navegación. La aportación inicial debe ser como mínimo de un 30 por ciento y como
máximo un 50 por ciento sobre el total del precio de la
embarcación con el IVA del 16 por ciento incluido.
Los tipos de interés que se aplican son fijos y los plazos de duración del contrato oscilan entre los 3 y 15
años. Con el leasing francés se descartan los gastos
de apertura, de registro y de notario. El importe medio
de este tipo de operaciones es de 80.000 euros y sus
perspectivas de futuro se perfilan al alza al tratarse de
un producto ágil, fácil y sencillo a la hora de adquirir una
nueva embarcación.

common credit facility used internationally due to its flexibility. This complementary
funding formula, originated in the USA, allows
paying for the investment
of an asset as it arises.
In our country, there has
been an increase in this
kind of contract within the
nautical field and, currently, a 20% of boats are purchased using these credit
facilities, getting closer to the situation found in some of
our neighbouring countries, such as France and Italy,
where most pleasure boats are funded through leasing.
Options
The contract, which consists in renting a new boat with
the option to purchase at the end of the rental period,
can be used for any officially approved boats in categories A, B or C. The most common lessee profile is an
amateur who wants to rent a boat and hold his option
to purchase intact during the leasing contract period, to
end up being the owner of the boat.
France has been the first European country to grant legal frames for leasing. In Spain, among the companies
using this nautical formula we can highlight CGMer and
SGB Finance, which are both represented by GYLF Iberia, brokers of renowned international prestige.
The conditions of this French leasing with Spanish flag,
both for Spanish lessees and for residents in Spain,
include some essential requirements. Firstly, the boat
must be new and must be more than 8 meters long. The
lessee will have to pay the registration tax and its procedure at the relevant harbourmaster’s office depending
on each navigation area. The initial contribution must be
a minimum of 30% and a maximum of 50% on the total
of the price of the boat with the 16% VAT inclusive.
The interest rates applied are fixed and the contract duration period ranges from 3 to 25 years. French leasing
does not have any opening, registration or notary fees.
The average amount for this kind of operation is 80,000
euros and its future expectations seem to be increasing
since it is an agile, easy and straight-forward product
when deciding to purchase a boat.

l litoral de la costa norte de Menorca destaca
por su perfil irregular con numerosas ensenadas y salientes. Esta particular orografía tiene
su origen tanto en la acción del fuerte oleaje causado
por los frecuentes episodios de violento viento del norte (tramontana), como en la diversidad de materiales
geológicos que forman la parte septentrional de la isla.
Efectivamente esta región es auténtico mosaico de diferentes tipos de roca y suelos. Esta diversidad también tiene su reflejo en los seres vivos que habitan en
ella. La biodiversidad de la Tramontana menorquina es
sensiblemente superior a la parte sur (el Migjorn), gracias precisamente a que el relieve más accidentado y
la diversidad de suelos favorecen a su vez una diversificación de hábitats. En éstos encuentran su ambiente
ideal diferentes especies, tanto animales como vegetales. Esta biodiversidad no es uniforme por todo el litoral, sino que hay algunos puntos que destacan por ser
auténticos focos, en los cuales es posible ver en poca
superficie toda una gran variedad de especies, especialmente vegetales. Con el interés añadido que en
algunas de estas localidades coincide también la presencia de un elevado número de endemismos, o sea,
especies que en todo el mundo solo crecen en Menorca
o en el resto de las Islas Baleares o tirrénicas (Cerdeña,
Córcega, islas Toscanas, etc.).

he northern coast of Menorca stands out thanks
to its irregular outline with numerous inlets and
outlets. This particular orography originates from
erosion due to crashing waves caused by frequent episodes of violent northerly wind (known locally as tramontana wind) and from the diversity of geological materials
that form the northern part of the Island. In effect, this
region is an authentic mosaic of different types of rock
and land; in such way that travelling across only a few
metres, is enough to pass by the most ancient materials
from the early ages until the most modern of the quaternary. This diversity of land and rock is also reflected by
the living creatures that form part of the habitat. The biological diversity of the northern coastline (tramontana)
is noticeably superior to that of the Island’s southerly
coast (Migjorn), precisely thanks to the first possessing
a much more accidental relief and variety of grounds
which favour the diversification of habitats and therefore species. In these grounds many animal and plant
species find an ideal environment. Such biodiversity is
not distributed equally along the whole of the islands
coast, as there are some areas that stand out for being
authentic focal points, in which it becomes possible to
see in a small area a vast variety of species, especially
plants. An extra point of interest is the fact that in some
of these areas there are a high number of species that

Uno de estos puntos calientes de biodiversidad lo constituye la cala del Pilar y el arenal asociado a ella. Nada
más llegar, esta playa ya destaca por el fuerte contraste
de los materiales geológicos que forman el paisaje. Los
suelos y rocas rojizas de rodeno, de carácter silíceo,
contrastan con el tono amarillento de la arena de la playa y con el blanquecino de las dunas fósiles calcáreas
situadas en la parte superior de la colina que cierra la
playa por detrás.
Los fuertes vientos del norte impulsan continuamente
la arena que se va depositando en la playa ladera arriba e incluso después varios kilómetros hacía el interior.
Después de miles de años de esta acción continuada
el resultado es un extenso arenal que se alarga hacía
el interior de la isla en forma de lengua. En cambio,
donde no se produce
ningún depósito de arena, a pesar de existir un
litoral en forma de playa,
ésta es sustituida por los
cantos rodados de origen marino. El resultado
puede ser un imagen tan
espectacular como el conocido “Codolar d’Alfurí”
formado exclusivamente
por cantos rodados de
grandes
dimensiones,
todos de forma muy similar y de gran peso. El
mejor momento para visitarlo es, precisamente,
cuando el mar está en
pleno proceso de su fabricación, es decir, un día de fuerte oleaje en que el
ruido de las piedras al chocar unas con otras es verdaderamente espectacular.
Es todo este escenario de rocas, suelos y formas de
relieve lo que hace de este paraje uno de los más interesantes de la isla, especialmente por su flora y vegetación. Mientras que en la misma cala es posible ver
las plantas típicas de los arenales marinos, a medida
que nos vamos alejando de ésta o nos desplazamos
sobre suelos más rocosos, la vegetación cambia de
manera considerable. En el arenal, hacía el interior, las
especies típicas de los sistemas dunares dejan paso
a otras más características de la vegetación de la isla,
ganando importancia las especies leñosas, especialmente las arbustivas. Algunas de ellas destacan por
su carácter endémico como por ejemplo Thymelaea
velutina o Scrophularia ramosissima. Pero una de las
singularidades de este arenal es el extenso encinar que
lo cubre en su parte más interior. Se trata de un bosque
más que centenario. Uno de los más conocidos en la
isla por su larga historia de usos forestales y ganaderos. Dentro de esta masa forestal destaca la presencia
de numerosos ejemplares de encinas de gran porte, en
algunas de ellas el tronco principal supera de largo los

Cala Pilar and its beach can be considered as key areas for biological diversity. Upon arrival, the beach
stands out for the high contrast of geological materials
that form the surrounding landscape. The earth and red
coloured rock or sandstone, that date back from the
Triassic period, form an amazing contrast with the glistening yellow sand and the whitish lime fossil dunes
situated on the superior part of the hill that encloses the
beach at the back.
The strength of the northerly winds continually drove the
sand which was deposited on the upper slope of the
beach and even various kilometres inland. After thousands of years the result
of this continuous action is
an extensive area of sand
that stretches towards the
heart of the island in the
shape of a tongue. However, there is a stretch of
coast where no deposit
of sand was created, and
even though it could have
formed a perfect beach,
it was left with rounded
rock edges of marine
origin. The extreme hardness of the sandstone
makes its formation the
result of hundreds of
years being continuously
worn away by the action
of waves. The aftermath of erosion can be seen in the
picturesque image of the “Codolar d’Alfurí” exclusively
formed by large round boulders, all of a similar shape
and size, and of a huge weight. The best time to visit
this inlet is a day with strong tides which is precisely
when the sea is in full boulder fabrication process and
the noise caused by the boulders crashing against one
another is truly spectacular.
All this amazing scenery with its rocks, grounds and relief make this area one of the most interesting on the
Island, especially for its wildlife and vegetation. Whilst
within the cove itself it is possible to see plants that are
typically found at the seashore that help to stabilize the
sand, as we move away from the cove and we advance
over more rocky grounds, the vegetation changes considerably. Towards the interior of the sandbank, the species typical of dune systems give way to others that are
more characteristic to the Island, such as bushes and
shrubs. Some stand out for their endemic character,
for example Thymelaea velutina or Scrophularia ramosissima. One of the areas singularities is the extensive
holm oak tree wood found at its very centre. This wood
is more than a hundred years old and one of the best
known on the Island due to its long history of use by

livestock farmers and woodcutters. Inside this dense
wood, the presence of a high number of very large holm
oak trees stand out, some of which’s trunks have a circumference of over three metres wide. The trees in this
wood do not grow closely which allows undergrowth
rich in species.
In the areas nearer to the seafront, vegetation is of
low bearing due to the limitations that strong northerly
winds impose and the salinity. The typical appearance
is that of rocky grounds with very little plant coverage
that is only sprinkled in a disperse form, with small
round bushes that have densely bundled leaves. They
are endemic species of the Limonium kind, a group of
plants that are fully adapted to high salinity and to long
periods of drought. Going a few metres inland, where
the influence of salinity is not as direct, grow, without
a doubt, the most interesting of the Islands vegetation:
the community of “socarrells”. Their appearance could
be described as prickly semi-spherical shaped bushes
that look like cushions. This particular way of growing
responds on one hand for offering very little resistance
to the wind (aerodynamic shape), and on the other
hand for creating an interior microclimate that helps to
overcome difficult conditions caused by the wind itself
and salinity: low humidity and cold temperatures during
the winter. In Menorca there are up to five different types

de porte bajo. Su aspecto es el de un suelo rocoso con
muy poca cobertura vegetal salpicado, de forma dispersa, por pequeñas matas redondeadas de plantas con
las hoja pequeñas dispuestas muy densamente. Son
especies endémicas del género Limonium (siempreviva
azul), un grupo de plantas plenamente adaptadas a la
elevada salinidad y a largos períodos de sequía. Unos
pocos metros más hacía el interior, donde la influencia
de la salinidad ya no es tan directa, se desarrolla la que
es, sin duda, la vegetación más interesante de la isla:
la comunidad de “socarrells”. Su componente principal
son arbustos espinosos de forma semiesférica, parecidos a almohadillas. Esta particular forma de crecimiento obedece por una parte a oponer poca resistencia al
viento (forma aerodinámica), pero también a crear un
microclima en su interior que les ayuda a superar las
difíciles condiciones creadas por el mismo viento y salinidad: baja humedad y temperaturas frías durante el invierno. En Menorca hay hasta cinco especies diferentes
de socarrells, todas son endémicas de Menorca o de
Menorca y Mallorca (endemismos gimnésicos).
Arbustos
A esta interesante comunidad le sigue, en una tercera
gradación hacía el interior, una vegetación en la que
ya cobran más protagonismo los arbustos de desarrollo medio. En general los componentes principales son
plantas que ya adquieren un porte de mayor altura,
pero tienen algunas características en común con la
anterior. Su aspecto sigue siendo aerodinámico, puesto que la influencia de la tramontana es todavía muy
intensa, y también tiene entre sus componentes una representación de especies endémicas. La especie más
representativa de esta vegetación arbustiva es una
forma local de labiérnago blanco (Phillyrea media var.
rodriguezii) que se caracteriza por sus hojas anchas,
duras y de color verde oscuro.
Cubriendo densamente las laderas más altas situadas
detrás de la cala puede verse un monte bajo de brezales que se caracterizan por formar una vegetación casi
impenetrable. Esto es lo que ocurre con el pequeño
cauce que cruza limita el arenal por su lado oriental. Es
un pequeño torrente casi siempre seco, pero su presencia es suficiente para que en el se desarrolle un
exuberante bosque de encinas. En este caso, diferente al que encontramos en el arenal. Aquí los árboles
están dispuestos más densamente para aprovechar al
máximo el espacio ideal. Su vegetación es más densa
y bajo ellos se crea un ambiente de sombra profunda
que impide el crecimiento de otras plantas, solamente
algunas lianas y unos pocos helechos logran desarrollarse. El resultado es un espacio abierto con sombra
permanente y de agradable temperatura en los días
más calurosos del verano.

followed by vegetation further inland where bushes in
mid-development are prominent. In general the principal components are plants that have acquired a greater
height, but still maintain some common characteristics
with the previous.
Other bush species observed can be found within not
strictly marine communities of vegetation: “lentisco”,
“aladierno” or in latin Prasium majus (small bush with
white flowers) “jaras”, rosemary or winter heather.
Precisely this type of vegetation can be seen densely
covering the higher slopes situated behind the cove.
This heath is characterized by the way it forms an almost impenetrable barrier of vegetation. It is however enough where soils are deeper and conserve a bit
more freshness to enable us to find a radical change in
vegetation. This is what happens to the small river bed
that crosses and borders the sand bank on its eastern
side. A stream that is nearly always dry, but its mere
presence is enough to enable the development of an
exuberant wood of holm oak trees. This is a completely
different case to that of the sand bank. Here trees are
laid out much more densely to maximise use of the ideal
space. The thick mass of trees prevents any other plant
development as no light reaches the ground, only a few
lianas and ferns manage to grow. The result is an open
space with permanent shade and pleasant temperatures, even on the hottest days of the summer.

suministro de Información Comercial, Financiera y de Marketing, Se trata
de una guía de gran utilidad para identificar las mejores
compañías españolas, establecer relaciones comerciales rentables, localizar a las empresas con menor
índice de riesgo y acreditar ante terceros los buenos
resultados de una organización.
Prestige Rating Book presenta una lista de 25.000 empresas, distribuidas por provincias, que representa el
1% del total de empresas española activas. La lista está
encabezada por Madrid con 5.426 compañías, seguida
por Barcelona con 4.761, Valencia con 1.379 y Alicante
con 868 empresas.
