Welcome to this year’s VegfestUK Bristol which celebrates its 13th
year in Bristol City Centre. From this year onwards, we’re upping
our emphasis on vegan education with a number of interesting
features and individuals confirmed aiming to get more people to
ultimately go vegan:
Vegan Activists Workshops
Before 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, the focus is on vegan food and
education. Amongst the new features are a series of Vegan Activists
Workshops which empower activists with the tools they need for
effective vegan outreach. Topics range from giving school talks and
cookery demos to writing novels and organising vegan meetups.
Extended Kids Area
Parents and kids will have a joyous time in the extended Kids Area
which includes a Disco Dome, Water Fights, a Last Man Standing
mat, on top of kids cookery classes by Captain James Tea Cook
alongside smoothie bikes.

There’s a delectable selection of
vegan street food from 15 specialist
caterers on top of 5 licensed bars
serving alcoholic drinks, 2 juice
bars and 1 coffee van. Shopaholics
can indulge in 140 stalls packed
with free samples and special offers
on their favourite vegan chocolates, milks, cheeses, meats, fashion,

Green Credentials
VegfestUK Bristol is proud to be a part of Bristol’s European Green
Capital initiatives in 2015. We have in place the following green
policies in support of Bristol’s city-wide green initiatives:
FOOD
• Only 100% vegan food will be served on site.
Why Vegan Food is good for the environment:
• Livestock farming amounts to approximately 51% of
human-caused greenhouse gas emissions – more than
the whole transport sector combined!
• Vegan food contributes to far less air and water pollution
than animal-based food.
• Vegan food can take on average 10 times less land and
100 tims less water to produce than animal-based food.
GENERATOR
• Biodiesel generator to be used on site
DESIGN & PRINT
• Distribution team put out suitable amounts in each outlet (not
leaving too many)
• They collect and recycle any leftover flyers once the campaign
has finished.
• All vehicles will be diesel powered.
• Where economically viable, catalytic converters are fitted.
• Paper and cardboard from both office and warehouse
operations is recycled, and waste aluminium is sold on
ensuring as much is used as possible.
• All non-recyclable waste is collected and removed by a
respected and dependable disposal contractor.
• Drying of materials is carried out in a separate area to other
operations, to ensure the process is as energy-efficient as
possible.

Vegan Athletes for Peace Cycle Ride
Organised by the world’s first vegan footballer Neil Robinson
In 2015, the Vegan Athletes for Peace
Cycling Team will commence,
journeying from Land’s End to John
O’Groats travelling almost 950 miles
in 9 days – an average of 100 miles per
day!
The three-man team, comprising Dean
Howell, Neil Robinson, and Tris West,
aim to raise funds and awareness
for some amazing charities, promoting true health/nutrition,
humanitarian, environmental and anti-animal exploitation causes.
All donations will make a far reaching difference on many levels
to these causes. We are incredibly fortunate to live in such an
abundant environment, free to express ourselves, access to huge
resources and live peaceful lives. This is nothing short of a luxury in
this world in contrast with the billions of suffering, starving people
and animals whose voices and pain are unheard and unexpressed.
We all sleep under the same stars at night and breathe the same air;
we all have a right to discover our potential and purpose.
Please support us on this epic challenge & adventure and choose
the cause that resonates with you. To find out more, visit
www.veganathletesforpeace.com.
A Well-Fed World Ethiopian School
Lunch Programme (joint with
International Fund for Africa)
AWFW have recently partnered with the International Fund for
Africa to implement a long-term daily vegan meal plan and basic
health services in two schools in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Current food availability in many Ethiopian schools is sporadic and
inadequate. Many children go without food and teachers even give
some of their own limited pay to help.
AWFW’s partnership with IFA is developing a vegetable garden
and building bakeries to increase onsite food availability, and
to generate income for long-term supplementation and selfsustainability.
Fortunately, because of Ethiopia’s large Orthodox population
(who have long and dispersed periods of ‘vegan’ fasting), schools
sometimes default to serving vegan food year-round, so no special
permissions or procedures for vegan school lunches are required.
The program’s successes will be used to model improvements for
other schools around the city.
For full details about the school lunch programme, visit their
website www.awfw.org/ethiopia
Collections will be made on exit on both May 23rd 24th at
VegfestUK Bristol in support of this wonderful food initiative –
please give generously, thanks!

LTJ Bukem took the drum and bass concept from a small venue off
London’s Charing Cross Road to the nation’s superclubs and then
onto the international stage. His records launched breakbeat into a
brand new galaxy of sound, and he writes ‘Renaissance man for a
digital age’.
The man known to his friends as Danny Williamson is the living
embodiment of the post-acid house entrepreneurial creative spirit.
He is a mild mannered energy flash whose panoramic musical
vision has found success in every area he has explored, lighting the
way with little more than a zest for life and a love of music.

Ian Silk
Reggae artist Ian Silk is originally
known by the name Kayton Barrett
and grew up in the parish of St
Elizabeth, Jamaica in a town called
Chocolate Hole. From the age of
10, Ian’s first inspiration came from
singing at home with his cousin
Dennis who played the drums
whilst Ian Silk sang.
Alfredo
Alfredo’s illustrious DJ career spans almost 30 years, including
famously his residency at Amnesia in Ibiza in 1984-1989, spreading
his own brand of Ibiza sound, strongly influencing the likes of
Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold and Nicky Holloway, who
brought his new Balearic sound back to the UK.
Throughout his lengthy career, he has been awarded numerous
awards, including DJ of the Decade in internationally renowned
DJ Magazine. He was also the first DJ ever to receive an award at
the Middem Awards in Cannes. More recently, in the 2005 Ibiza DJ
Awards, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
alfredoibiza.com
In the mid 80’s, Ian wrote his first song called ‘Leave her alone’,
little did he know that this song would be released nearly 20 years
later on his first album ‘ Higher Heights’. Song writing was a way of
him expressing life experiences that he had encountered. His song
writing naturally progressed onto recording his songs at a popular
recording studio in Jamaica.
Ian has been singing alongside veteran reggae artist ‘Jimmy London’
performing in Bristol as part of the launch of a new monthly social
night at the Kuumba Community Centre, by local community
member ‘R.O.O.T.S Shea Butter Trust & Kuumba Community Centre’.
Flexi D
Flexi D is a shining star of
reggae music with over 20
years’ experience. With
an eye for talent and an
ear tuned to the audience,
he has made a name for
himself promoting his love
for Reggae.
Flexi D was born Dennis
Newell
in
Chocolate
Hole District, St Elizabeth
Jamaica. He knows how to
harness the sun, beach and
energy of his roots to get the
most out of his audience.
From the early age of ten, Ian
Silk and Flexi D started putting their music together with Ian singing
and Flexi D playing drums to an enthusiastic audience. Having an
evolving appreciation of the “feel-good factor” has brought Flexi D
commercial success worldwide.
idiotech
In 2004, idiotech achieved notoriety
with his remix of The Prodigy’s “Girls”,
featured on the unofficial download
album “Always Outsiders, Never
Outdone” (a mashed-up and remixed
version of their “Always Outnumbered,
Never Outgunned” album). Since then, he has completed a number
of official remixes for a range of major and independent label artists,
receiving praise from DJs such as Norman Cook and Mark Moore.
idiotech was included in the Xfm / Wall Of Sound “A-Z of DJs”,
playing at Cargo alongside everyone from Arthur Baker to Zoot
Woman. Other notable DJ gigs have seen him play The Secret
Garden Party, The Egg, Concorde2, and a headline slot at 93 Feet
East. And his DJ sets have been broadcast on national radio.

Love Revolution
Tim Wellard
Love Revolution’s live performances
are a moving experience which take
the audience on a journey which
is uplifting, empowering, poignant
and memorable. Their warmth,
onstage humour and personal
chemistry combine with passionate
delivery and enthusiasm which
draw onlookers into their world.
Love Revolution’s lyrics - at various
times rousing, idealistic, personal
and universal - paint vivid pictures of their many travels, passions,
experiences and ideals. Their anthemic new material strikes a
chord and invariably has people singing along on first hearing.
loverevolutionmusic.com
Tim has been performing since
the 60’s having started out at the
legendary Folk Cottage in Cornwall.
Recently playing with Clive Palmer,
founder of the Incredible String band,
Tim mixes a combination of blues folk
and original material on guitar, banjo
and vocals to produce an absorbing
and authentic sound that is well suited
to the Vegfest experience. Watch out
for some classics including the likes of
the odd Grateful Dead tune, plus a sprinkling of Johnny Cash and
Hank Williams, plus the threat of an unconfirmed appearance of a
pink fluffy pig on lead guitar at the end.
Damian Etherington
Mr Dowland’s Midnight
Mr Dowland’s Midnight is a unique, imaginative and highly original
band. We offer our audience a rich journey from West to East, from
ancient to modern and back with plenty of improvisation on the
way.

Craig Sutton Flamenco Thief
The Phoenix Rose
Having performed over 200 concerts
in just ten months, The Flamenco
Thief, aka Craig Sutton, is rapidly
becoming one of Europe’s most
recognizable artists within the
underground DIY music scene. Craig
uses traditional flamenco guitar
techniques, but is best known for
working with a loop station to blend blend gypsy swing with
rumba-ska and hip-hop during energetic live performances.

The Phoenix Rose lead singer Jarvis Smith wrote the new single,
‘Sick & Tired’, a call to people who want an end to dictatorships and
manipulation, which are founding causes for the state of our planet.
Strong idea, but as Jarvis believes, music is the best way to spread
powerful and determined messages
in a peaceful manner. ‘Sick & Tired’
is a catalyst to make people consider
their world, and hopefully engages
them to realise their own capability in
insisting change.

Martin Fodor - Low
Carbon Living and a
Vegan Lifestyle
Our diet and lifestyle choices affect
ourselves and the rest of planet it’s not just what we consume, but
where it’s from that matters.
There’s growing recognition that
a low carbon life avoids meat and
dairy.
A healthy, compassionate diet and lifestyle can also be sustainable.
How do we make the food choices, the other decisions, and protect
the planet at the same time? A workshop approach should allow
plenty of scope for discussion.

VegfestUK Brighton 2015 review
VegfestUK just enjoyed a recordbreaking attendance of 12,000 visitors
at our latest event at the Brighton
Centre on March 28th 29th.
Survey results indicate that:
tangible vegan solutions to the food sustainability problem.
General Election year also called for a Party Political Conference at
which the UK’s major political parties presented their manifestos
and engaged in debates on vegan issues.
Along the sustainability thread was a Hemp Expo with industry
leaders and notable hemp businesses presenting their expertise
on hemp.
- nearly 50% of our visitors were new to VegfestUK
- nearly 1,000 visitors decided to go vegan afterwards
- another 2,000 are moving towards veganism
- approximately 90% of all visitors are coming back next year
Plus there were over a dozen vegan comedians providing our
crowd with plenty of humour and laughter.
Add these to the rich mélange of 15 specialist vegan caterers,
nearly 200 stalls, dozens of talks and cookery demos, kids cookery
classes, a cinema among many other activities, and visitors to the
event have well and truly been armed with a wealth of knowledge
on how to go and stay vegan.
We’re absolutely over the moon with both our attendance figures
and the statistics gathered from our survey. It has always been our
ultimate aim to convince the general public to go vegan through
our events. In years gone by, our combination of food, comedy and
music has worked a treat in making veganism more accessible to
the public. Nowadays, however, going vegan has actually got really
sexy, and we believe that there has never been a better time than
right now to up our emphasis on vegan education and put out a
consistent message to the public to go vegan.
If you wish to learn more about going vegan or convincing others to
follow suit, check out our 3 upcoming shows in 2015 – Bristol (May
23rd 24th), London (October 10th 11th) and Scotland (December 5th
6th). Among the many highlights are brand-new vegan activists
workshops and summits which provide tools and ideas for
outreach. Dates for VegfestUK Brighton 2016 will be announced
soon. Visit vegfest.co.uk for full details of these blockbuster events.
