Pentecost Sunday: May 24, 2015 “As the Father has sent me, so I send you: Receive the Holy Spirit.” -John 20:19-23 Pastor Reflection In today’s responsorial psalm the Church sings out: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” All three readings describe how God has answered that prayer already. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles and in the Gospel passage from John, we read of astonishing events that called cowering disciples to step out of hiding and proclaim news that would condemn them and change the world forever! In the second reading Paul’s words reach out into the future to us: “we were all given to drink of one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13). Memorial Day In observance of Memorial Day, the Parish Office will be closed on Monday, May 25. Masses will be celebrated at: 8 am—Holy Family 9am—St. Mary’s It is our task to truly pray today’s psalm response. Let us together beg the Holy Spirit to renew the earth by renewing the Church, sending many more men and women to serve in her various ministries. SENT AS HE WAS SENT Religious vocations have always been a mystery. Even in the Old Testament, we read of prophets who, when called, replied, “Lord! Why me?” Those who serve the Church today as priests, deacons, religious sisters or brothers, or lay ministers often report a feeling of wonder that God has chosen them to serve. Therefore, it should be no surprise if readers of today’s scripture passages, which describe the disciples hiding in fear, might wonder, “Lord, why them?” Those fearful disciples were, nonetheless, the recipients of wonderful gifts of the Spirit. On Easter Sunday evening, today’s Gospel reports, Jesus gave his disciples the power to forgive sins. “Peace be with you,” he said. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21). From this first “sending” and its powerful aftermath on Pentecost, the Church was born. Out of such fearful and unlikely origins, the Church has grown so strong that it has survived every kind of sin and persecution from the outside as well as from within. “WHY US?” While today’s first reading and gospel describe these astonishing events, it is Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, who puts them into perspective. “We were all given to drink of the one Spirit,” Paul proclaims. We can read with wonder about the frightened people Jesus first sent to bring the gospel to the world, or we can look around with wonder at the people who are sent today. “Lord, why us?” we may well ask. Jesus has never left his Church orphaned. As the Father sent him, and as he sent his disciples, so he now sends us. How will each of us respond to this challenge? Peace be with us all. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:1–11; Ps 104:1, 24, 29–31, 34; 1 Cor 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Gal 5:16–25; Jn 20:19–23 or Jn 15:26–27; 16:12– 15 Join us for this year’s Vacation Bible School which will take place from July 20-24, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Participants ages 3 years through 6th grade are invited to learn how to be “Champions for Christ” through Excellence, Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance and Justice. RESTORATIVE JUSTICE All of us are called to stand with victims in their search for healing and genuine justice. Our pastoral presence to victims must be compassionate and constant. Victims and their families need to know that they are not alone and that the Church and greater community are there to walk with them through their pain and suffering. We need to expand our outreach to victims. Victims of crime have a right to be kept informed and involved throughout the criminal justice process. Protecting communities and preventing crime requires helping offenders return successfully back into society. Upon reentering society, former offenders, as well as their families and community, face complex challenges. Many are likely to struggle with substance abuse, lack of adequate education and job skills, limited housing options and mental health issues. We do not support policies that treat young offenders as though they are adults. Children should not live their lives behind bars for decisions they made at a stage of mental and emotional immaturity. Healing and rehabilitation are the primary focus and intent of restorative justice which seeks to amend the justice system to reflect the idea that kids can change. We encourage models of restorative justice: educating parishioners and community members on crime prevention and effective responses to victims and offenders and restoring a sense of community that resists the violence that has engulfed so much of our culture. And we emphasize that the death penalty offers the tragic illusion that we can defend life by taking life. St. John Paul II condemned the death penalty (cf. Evangelium Vitae, 56), as does the Catechism of the Catholic Church (No. 2267). We continue to press for expanded access to prisoners through our chaplaincy programs, including access by dedicated volunteers who will help nourish their faith life. We oppose limitations on the authentic religious expression of prisoners and roadblocks that inhibit prison ministry. We support policies and programs that address the needs of victims. We support programming to improve prospects for offenders returning to their families and communities. We advocate for polices that help reduce violence in local communities. We support chaplains who care for the spiritual needs of those incarcerated in our prisons and jails. We advocate for life in prison rather than the use of the death penalty. In appreciation for your generous support in response to the K.V.S.P needs, may God richly bless you for remembering the men behind the walls. -Detention Ministry Team OUR BELOVED DEPARTED In the kindness of your prayers, please remember our most recently deceased: ELIO ROJAS brother of Eulalio & Hector Rojas JORGE ROJAS uncle of Eulalio & Hector Rojas REGINA MALONEY sister of Marge Novotny ROBERTA FESLER Mother of John Fesler SANCTUARY FLOWER DEDICATIONS ST.
