Uncle Fred had a barbershop in Harvey, and in that barbershop there was a gumball
machine. One day two boys came in, not for haircuts, but for gumballs. Who doesn’t
love the bright colors and the sweet taste of a good gumball? Plus, all that chewing and
bubble-popping can keep you occupied for hours. Now, if you were sitting right next to
those boys, you could see that they didn’t even put any money into the machine; they
just turned the crank. Then they cried out to Uncle Fred, “Hey, we didn’t get our
gumballs!” Well, if you really want a gumball, you’re not afraid to steal it. And if
you’re going to steal it, you may as well lie, too. “Is that right?” said Uncle Fred. He
reached over to the counter where he had some spare change waiting—apparently this
was not the first time the machine had ‘malfunctioned.’ He handed over the change, the boys got their
gumballs, and they left the shop with big smiles on their faces because they had fooled Uncle Fred.
I don’t think they fooled him at all. Uncle Fred knew the secret of God the Father’s love. He was a man
who knew that throughout life we try to fool God the Father, and yet he still keeps loving us. God the
Father still showers us with his graces and with his gifts and his love even though we don’t deserve it.
And if God the Father loves us that way, well, we should love one another in the same way—even
though we don’t deserve it. If God has blessed you, how can you keep a few gumballs from your
brothers?
Jesus said to his disciples: “I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the
good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. … So be perfect, just as your heavenly
Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:43-48)
On this Father’s Day, we have to recognize that all human fathers come from little boys—but they also
come from their heavenly Father. At times they show us clearly how far we are from that great and allpowerful and pure love that comes from heaven; we all have our sins. At other times, our fathers can give
us a glimpse of that glory of God the Father that fills heaven and earth. So let’s pray for our fathers today,
a prayer for mercy and a prayer of thanks. May God bless our fathers, living and deceased, and may he
bless them now and always.
I’m sure when those boys grew up, they realized they hadn’t fooled Uncle Fred. I’m sure it dawned on
them how kind he was to them. I hope it moved them to be sorry for the foolish sins of their youth, even
though it was simply a few gumballs. As those boys grew up, I hope the kindness of Uncle Fred moved
them to be kind to others.
We sure don’t deserve it, but each day we live under the kindness and love of our heavenly Father. Let’s
receive it deeply and share it generously with those around us.
Happy Father’s Day!
Fr. Jerome

Collection on Behalf of Pope Francis
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Peter’s Pence Collection
(taking place June 25-26, 2016) is an opportunity to become a
witness of charity to those who suffer most. Pope Francis has
encouraged us to “open our eyes and see the misery of the
world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied
their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to
heed their cry for help!” (Misericordiae Vultus, [MV] no. 15).
Through the Peter’s Pence Collection, we stand in solidarity
with Catholics all over the world to support the charitable
works of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Contributions to this
collection support him as he reaches out to those suffering the
effects of war and violence, natural disasters, and religious
persecution.
Pope Francis has told us that “mercy is the force that
reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look
to the future with hope” (MV, no. 10). Please prayerfully
consider participating in this collection and becoming a witness
of charity, a force of mercy that reaches out to those around the
world.
