Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH 90 Days of Grace: 40 days of Lent / 50 days of Easter From the Ashes of Lent to the Fire of a New Pentecost The 4th Sunday of Easter in each of the 3 years of the Lectionary cycle speaks about Christ, the Good Shepherd, and us, his flock. This year, we hear Jesus tell us once again, “My sheep hear my voice.” Each of us is called to attune our hearts to the voice of Jesus. Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Please remember, in your prayer before the Lord, to pray for vocations from our parish to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, and consecrated life. If God is calling you to such a vocation, you will find your peace and happiness by responding to his call. In a special way, vocations grow out of and are nurtured in family life. Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to those You have called the willingness and generosity of spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church. Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly the faith of those You have called and will continue to call. We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen. As Plutarch noted in the 1st century, “The truly noble and resolved spirit raises itself and becomes more conspicuous in times of disaster and ill-fortune.” The big, blazing truth about man is that he has a heavensized hole in his heart, and nothing else can fill it. We pass our lives trying to fill the Grand Canyon with marbles. We hope you enjoy this fascinating video series. I John sees a throng of every race, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches, gathered before the throne. Today is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday because the gospels for the Fourth Sunday of Easter, always from John, deal with passages about shepherds and sheep. 4th Sunday of Easter Acts 13:14, 43-52 We now turn to the Gentiles. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Psalm 100 The Lamb will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water. Revelation 7:9, 14b-17 I give my sheep eternal life. John 10:27-30 Men, That Man Is You (TMIY) addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (March, 2006) tells us: #261Is Baptism necessary for salvation? Baptism is necessary for salvation for all those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. #262Is it possible to be saved without Baptism? Since Christ died for the salvation of all, those can be saved without Baptism who died for the faith (Baptism of blood.) Catechumens and all those who, even without knowing Christ and the Church, still (under the impulse of grace) sincerely seek God and strive to do his will can also be saved without Baptism (Baptism of desire). The Church in her liturgy entrusts children who die without Baptism to the mercy of God. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2nd Edition, 1997), we find: VI. The Necessity of Baptism. 1257The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. [Jn 3:5] He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them. [Mt 28:19-20] Baptism is necessary for salvation for those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament. [Mk 16:16] The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are “reborn of water and the Spirit.” God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments. 1258The Church has always held the firm conviction that those who suffer death for the sake of the faith without having received Baptism are baptized by their death for and with Christ. This Baptism of blood, like the desire for Baptism, brings about the fruits of Baptism without being a sacrament. 1259For catechumens who die before their Baptism, their explicit desire to receive it, together with repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive through the sacrament. April 17, 2016 1260“Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery.” Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity. 1261As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in the funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,” [Mk 10:14; 1 Tim 2:4] allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church’s call not to prevent littler children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism. The Second Vatican Council, in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium (November 21, 1964) states: 16. … Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience — those too may achieve eternal salvation. Nor shall divine providence deny the assistance necessary for salvation to those who, without any fault of theirs, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God, and who, not without grace, strive to lead a good life. … There was a multitude standing before the Lamb with palm branches. Revelation 7:9 A suggestion during the 50 Days of the Easter Season: Read The Acts of the Apostles. The association of water and the Spirit is explained by the twofold purpose, for which baptism was instituted, namely, to destroy the sin in us so that it could never again give birth to death, and to enable us to live by the Spirit and so win the reward of holiness. — St. Basil the Great, bishop from the book On the Holy Spirit Fourth Sunday of Easter 9 10 Manassas, Virginia ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH F estival P arroquial FESTIVAL: Tema Internacional - Es un mundo pequeño Diviértase en el maravilloso mundo de Todos los Santos.
