What's Happening in CCTSI Community Engagement Pilot Grants...
Partnership Development Grant #105: "Research protocol to identify and test HIV prevention
messages that gay and bisexual men in the Denver metropolitan area are receptive to using in their
social networks."
Community Partner: Deryk Sanchez Standring, MA, SageRiver Consulting, Inc.
Academic Partner: Matthew C. Brown, PhD, University of Colorado, Sociology Department
Abstract: This pilot grant partnership development project explores the social networks of gay and
bisexual men and the conversations that these men have with their social networks, specifically asking
questions on what gay and bisexual men talk about with their friends regarding sexual choices. The
study intends to use community organizations, word-of-mouth, and community events to recruit men
for focus groups and one-on-one interviews. As the reality of HIV/AIDS continue to change for gay and
bisexual men, organizations need updated information in order to develop effective campaigns for
today’s gay and bisexual man. The data gathered will help organizations revise sexual health campaigns.
Major accomplishments reported at the six-month time point:
• Received IRB approval at the end of July 2011. Challenges: The process of moving the IRB through
CU Boulder took much more time than either partner anticipated, and there were limited
resources through CCTSI to assist in navigating the system. However, over the course of IRB
development, the partners developed a cohesive and productive relationship.
• Partnered with community-based organization and conducted focus groups at their annual
retreat; engaged 21 men in the research. Identified volunteers from the retreat to participate in
key informant interviews.
• Collaborated with an interested health department to recruit gay and bisexual men traditionally
not reached by Denver area agencies into this research study. "The perspectives and ideas from
these men will provide a richer picture of the needs of the community and provide insight on
how they use their social networks in conjunction with HIV prevention."
This partnership development grant will end April 30, 2012, and we look forward to learning more of the
partnership's good work in their final report.
Have a great weekend!
