I recently came across an article in USA Today
about some Benedictine Sisters who have decided to
“Go Green”. Their monastery has solar powered
lighting, geothermal energy sources and recyclable carpeting. They are receiving awards for their
innovation and dedication to the environment.
This is an inspiring example of the Spirit at work
in the world. As we remember the work of the
Spirit shown through the first women and men
who experienced the Risen Lord, we find that
same Spirit of love among us.
I refer to this as one of countless examples of the
constant witness, wisdom and faithfulness shown by
the Catholic Sisters throughout our nation. One of the
national organizations of the Sisters has recently come
under harsh criticism and they are currently responding to a Doctrinal Assessment from the Congregation
of the Doctrine of the Faith in the Vatican. The investigation of the Sisters appears to be legalistic and paternalistic. Our Catholic liturgical calendar draws our
attention to the work of the Spirit of Pentecost and the
vision of the Church as a sacrament in the world.
This is the vision espoused in the documents of the
Second Vatican Council and the Catholic Sisters have
enthusiastically embraced this. They have led the way
for reform not only of the world but for the Church
itself. Their initiatives can be difficult or frightening to
people or institutions who see no possibilities except
the way of the past. As the Second Vatican Council
showed us, the Spirit of God always leads in ways that
are about freedom and truth. On this Trinity Sunday,
we are reminded that our God is not the subject of
mere intellectual doctrine but a loving union of Creator, Redeemer and Spirit who leads in creative and
inspired directions. The Catholic Sisters of this nation
have wholeheartedly embraced this vision of God at
work in the world. Thank you for remaining true to the
Light of Christ. I thank the Sisters of the Presentation
of the Blessed Virgin Mary who taught us at St. Germaine Elementary School in Oak Lawn. I thank all the
Sisters who impart the true Spirit of God through their
ministry to the poor and powerless. I thank the Sisters
who lead our prayer for immigrants at the Broadview
Detention Center and confront elected officials for an
unjust system of laws for immigrants. Thank you to
the Sisters who have decided to “Go Green”. If we
loose the Catholic Sisters in this country, I wonder
what is left. As the Catholic Sisters faithfully discern
God’s invitation at this time, may we know the healing presence of the Spirit of God in our Church.

Recientemente leí un artículo en USA Today sobre
unas hermanas Benedictinas que decidieron “Ir Verde.”
Su monasterio tiene electricidad a través de energía
solar, recursos de energía geotermales y alfombras
recicladas. Están recibiendo premios por su innovación y dedicación al ambiente. Este es un ejemplo de la inspiración del Espíritu en su trabajo en el
mundo. Recordemos que el trabajo del Espíritu semostró a los primeros hombres y mujeres que vieron
al Señor Resucitado; y encontramos el mismo
Espíritu de amor entre nosotros.
Les cuento esto como uno de los innumerables ejemplos del constante testimonio, sabiduría y lealtad
mostrado por las Hermanas católicas en nuestra nación.
Una de las organizaciones nacional de las Hermana estuvo recientemente bajo la dura crítica y están respondiendo a una Evaluación Doctrinaria de la Fe del Vaticano. La investigación del Vaticano en las Hermanas
parece ser legalístico y paternalista. Nuestro calendario
litúrgico Católico muestra atracción al trabajo del Espíritu
de Pentecostés y la visión de la Iglesia como un sacramento en el mundo.
Esta es la visión manifestada en los documentos del
Segundo Concilio Vaticano y las Hermanas católicas
siguen esto entusiásticamente. Ellas han guíado el
camino a la reforma no solo en el mundo sino para la
Iglesia misma. Sus iniciativas pueden ser difíciles o atemorizantes para gente, o instituciones que no ven otras
posibilidades mas que el viejo modo del pasado. Como el
Segundo Concilio Vaticano nos mostró, el Espíritu de
Dios siempre guía en la manera conducive a la verdad y a
la libertad. En éste Domingo de la Trinidad, se nos recuerda que nuestro Dios no es el objeto de mera doctrina
intelectual, sino con la unión amorosa del Creador,
Redentor y el Espíritu que nos guía en direcciones creativas e inspiradoras. Las Hermanas católicas de esta nación
que de todo corazón han abrazado la visión de Dios en su
trabajo en el mundo. Les agradezco por permanecer fieles
a la Luz de Cristo. Agradezco a las Hermanas de la Presentación de la Santa Virgen María que nos enseñaron en
la Escuela Primaria de St. German en Oak Lawn. Les
agradezco a todas las Hermanas que nos impartieron el
verdadero Espíritu de Dios a través de su ministerio a los
pobres y a los indefensos. Agradezco a las Hermanas que
nos guían en oración por los inmigrantes en el Centro de
Detención de Broadview, y que se enfrentan a los oficiales electos en contra del sistema injusto de leyes para los
inmigrantes. Gracias a las Hermanas que decidieron “Ir
Verde.” Si perdemos a las Hermanas católicas en éste país
no sé lo que nos queda entonces. Así como las Hermanas
católicas disciernen la invitación de Dios en éste tiempo,
que reconozcamos la presencia sanadora del Espíritu de
Dios en nuestra Iglesia.

How does a 50/50 fundraiser work?
1. Lourdes Lottery consists of two raffles:

2. Each tickets purchased equals one entry.
3. Add up the amount collected in each drawing
and divide it in half. One half goes to the winner
and the other half goes to OLL for each raffle
drawing
4. More tickets sold, more money to the winner and
Our Lady of Lourdes wins.
