¿SIGUES A VALENCIA?
La presencia de las redes sociales en nuestras vidas es tan evidente como rápida ha sido su
irrupción. Ya se están quedando atrás los correos electrónicos, ¡imagina aquello de cartearse!
Ahora lo que se hace es escribir en muros de Facebook, subir vídeos en YouTube y, en lugar de
tutear a alguien, más bien lo twitteas. Del mismo modo, cualquiera puede colgar fotografías o
describir en reputadas webs experiencias vividas. También se puede hacer algo más, crear tu
propio blog para poner ahí todos los contenidos que generes, que otros los vean y además te
los difundan.
Evidentemente, a esta potentísima corriente de comunicación no podía ser ajena la industria
del turismo, y menos aún la Valencia turística. Desde que comenzamos nuestras andaduras
en las redes sociales en el año 2006 hasta ahora, la ciudad dispone en mercados como
España, Italia, Francia, Alemania o Reino Unido de páginas en Facebook, en Twitter, o de blogs
propios. También mostramos Valencia en TripAdvisor, en minube, en Google+, en Pinterest y
en YouTube…y, así, vamos ampliando presencia en las redes sociales para susurrar al turista al
oído o para gritarle a los cuatro vientos que venga a Valencia. Y no sólo para contar, sino para
que nos cuenten, algo de incalculable valor en nuestro permanente afán de mejora.

Valencia ha conocido estos meses los resultados de su colaboración en el I Barómetro de
Redes Sociales y Destinos Turísticos de la Comunitat Valenciana. Dicho informe deja patente

The presence of social networks in our lives is as evident as its breakthrough was quick. Emails
are becoming outdated, and imagine letter writing now! The current vogue is posting on
Facebook walls, uploading videos to YouTube and tweeting. Similarly, anyone can post pictures
or describe their experiences on reputable websites. You can also go further and create your
own blog where you can upload all your own content which others will see and spread for you.
Obviously, the tourism industry could not be left outside this very powerful communication
stream, not least Turismo Valencia. From the time we started using social media in 2006 until
today, the city has Facebook and Twitter pages and blogs in markets such as Spain, Italy,
France, Germany and the United Kingdom. We also promote Valencia on TripAdvisor, Minube,
Google+, Pinterest and YouTube. By doing so we are expanding our social media presence, by
both whispering in tourists’ ears and shouting from the rooftops, telling all to come to Valencia.
And not only telling but also being told, which is something invaluable in our ongoing quest for
improvement.
Valencia recently found out the results of its collaboration in the 1st Barometer of Social
Networks and Tourist Destinations in Valencian Community. The report makes clear that the city
is the most influential tourist destination in the Community in social networks, holding first place
in all the classifications and virtual communities that were analyzed. We now have 150,000
internet followers… are you one of them?

“Arroz brut” del Riff
It is said that when Valencians have a mission to cook
a paella outside their homeland, they take their water
with them, to ensure that the degree of doneness is, as
the Italians say, “al dente”. But what is the real secret
behind the fact that the best paella can only be
found in Valencia? Is it the water? Is it the Designation of
Origin Valencian rice from the Albufera? Perhaps it is the
vegetables that come straight from the huerta, the city’s
urban market gardens, or possibly the seafood caught
in the Valencian Mediterranean Sea... Whatever it is, we
invite you to follow our rice dish route and find out for
yourself. Who better than the chefs in town to tell you
their tricks.

Recorreremos una serie de restaurantes para desentrañar el
enigma. Desde las versiones más contemporáneas como el “Arroz
brut” del Riff, el “Margarita” de Ricard Camarena, el arroz untuoso de
“Espardenyes” de La Sucursal o la fusión asiática de Seu Xerea y Samsha
a las recetas que siguen las costumbres tradicionales como el arroz a
banda en Civera y el Timonel; la paella valenciana en los fogones de leña
de Casa Carmela, Les Graelles o Mateu; la paella de marisco en lugares
míticos como El Canyar, La Pepica y La Marcelina; el arroz de rojos en

Cuentan que los valencianos cuando tienen la misión de
cocinar una paella fuera de su tierra se llevan con ellos el
agua para que el punto de cocción sea, como dirían los
italianos “al dente”. Pero ¿cuál es el verdadero secreto
de que sólo en Valencia encontremos las mejores
paellas? ¿Será el agua? ¿Será el arroz con Denominación
de Origen de Valencia?, quizás sean las verduras que
vienen directas de la huerta o posiblemente los frutos del
mar que se pescan en el Mediterráneo valenciano…Te
invitamos a seguir nuestra ruta arrocera y descubrirlo tú

We visit a number of restaurants to unravel the puzzle. From
the most contemporary dishes, such as Riff’s “ Arroz brut,” Ricard
Camarena’s “Margarita,” La Sucursal’s unctuous “Espardenyes” or Seu
Xerea and Samsha’s Asian fusion rice, to recipes cooked in the traditional
manner, such as the arroz a banda at Civera and El Timonel, Valencian
paella cooked over the log fires at Casa Carmela, Les Graelles or Mateu,
seafood paella at mythical places such as El Canyar, La Pepica and La
Marcelina , rice with red shrimp or “arroz de rojos” at La Duna, right in the
Albuferra natural park, or a vegetable paella in the Barraca Toni Montoliu,
deep in the huerta…
Y así, de mesa en mesa conoceremos los trucos de unos y los engaños
de otros para desentrañar los misterios de la cocción del plato más
internacional de España, la paella. Originaria de Valencia, dicen que hay
más de 40 versiones diferentes con sabores, aromas y texturas únicas e
independientes. Y es que llega el otoño y a todos nos viene la imagen de
entrar en calor sentados a una mesa con un plato humeante…y si se trata
de un arroz, además, la boca se nos hace agua.
And so, from table to table you can discover the tricks of some and
deceptions of others to unravel the mysteries of paella, Spain’s most
international dish. Originally from Valencia, it is said there are more than
40 different versions of it, each with their own flavours, aromas and
textures, all unique and different. And when autumn falls, we all get the
urge to warm up sitting at a table with a steaming plate... and if it is a
delicious rice dish, it gets us drooling.
Un secreto si os contaremos, y es que lo que nunca falla es un buen
aceite de oliva valenciano y un buen arroz con Denominación de Origen
de Valencia. Estos dos básicos combinados con productos de primera
calidad transmiten los sabrosos sabores de los ingredientes, ya sean
setas, pollo, calamares, gambas o verduras. ¡Buen provecho!
We will let you into a little secret: what never fails is a great Valencian
olive oil together with a great dish of Denomination of Origin Valencian
rice. These two staples, combined with quality products, pass on the
tasty flavours of the ingredients, be they mushrooms, chicken, squid,

Así, hasta el 26 de enero el informalismo y la abstracción
de Rafael Canogar transmitirán en sus lienzos su sensación
de falta de libertad durante la Postguerra en España. Miembro
fundador del grupo El Paso, uno de los más prestigiosos y
rompedores en las corrientes de postguerra en España, su
exposición se convierte en lugar de casi obligada visita
para los amantes del arte.

A pioneer in Spain as a museum of modern art, the IVAM is
always a reference and a must see, not only for its permanent
collection with works by Picasso, Braque, Pollock, Valdes,
Chillida, Calder, Klee, Picabia and Delaunay... but also for its
magnificent visiting exhibitions.
Until January 26, Rafael Canogar’s informalism and
abstraction paintings transmit their feeling of the lack of
freedom during postwar Spain. He was a founding member of El
Paso, one of the most prestigious and groundbreaking post-war
currents in Spain, and this exhibition is an almost obligatory visit
for art lovers.
Still at the museum, we can have “Tea with Nefertiti”
until January 7 2014. Tea with Nefertiti brings
together over 100 works dating from 1800
BC to the present, ranging from paintings,
sculpture and photography to videos and
mixed media. In the exhibition there are
50 documentaries, some of which are
being exhibited for the first time.

coleccionistas de objetos inéditos como amuletos, están
de suerte en el MUVIM. Desde las exposiciones relativas al
arte de la escritura como “Tipografía. Imagen absoluta” o “59 the
anual of Type Directors Club”, pasando por las propuestas sobre
el chamanismo en Siberia, el arte fotográfico en el Far East, los
amuletos según la indumentarista valenciana “Victoria Liceras”
o “Las Brujas y su mundo”, el MUVIM es el lugar para descubrir
mundos inéditos de la imagen y la fotografía.

Como suele ser habitual en
Valencia, se presenta cálido y con
buenas temperaturas. Las terrazas
siguen bullendo a medio día con
temperaturas a 30º y de noche
con los termómetros a 25. Este
mes cuenta con una fecha muy
especial para los valencianos, el 9
de Octubre, Día de la Comunidad
Valenciana. Las calles se llenan de
coloridas procesiones de personajes
vestidos al puro estilo medieval
y que recuerdan la entrada en
Valencia de las tropas de Jaime I
el Conquistador y la batalla librada
con el frente árabe. El mismo 9, la
Comunidad Valenciana celebra Sant
Dionís, el día de los enamorados.
Los hombres regalan a las mujeres
un pañuelo de seda que envuelve
frutos hechos de mazapán. Y
estas fechas, más bien calidad que
otoñales, son el momento perfecto
para salir de la ciudad en busca de
un arrocito en la Albufera y de un
paseo en barca por el lago.
Sin llegar a refrescar, el sol
sigue acariciando Valencia
en este mes. El día 1 nos
presenta la oportunidad
de venir de puente
aprovechando las ofertas
hoteleras y una agenda
cultural y gastronómica
cargada de actividades.
Este mes nos da la
oportunidad de visitar
Valencia dos veces, una en
el puente de la Constitución,
para el día 6 y otra en plena
Navidad. Con las calles
decoradas y ambientadas,

o los talleres de la Ciudad de

en las iglesias del centro de
la ciudad. La Nochevieja y la
cabalgata de los Tres Reyes
Magos de Oriente, en las
calles del centro, y es que
hay una Navidad en Valencia
para todos.

enjoys nice warm temperatures.

midday with temperatures reaching

25 at night. This month features a
very special date in Valencia: 9th
October, the Day of the Valencian
Community. The streets are filled
with colourful processions of people
dressed in medieval costumes,
recreating the entry into Valencia of
the troops of James I the Conqueror
and the battles fought against the
Arab invaders. Sant Dionis’ Day,
the Day of Lovers, is also celebrated
on this day, when men give women
marzipan fruits wrapped up in silk
scarves. These are perfect days,
more warm than autumnal, to leave
the city in search of a nice rice dish
by the Albufera and take a boat ride
on the lake.
Without actually cooling you
down, the sun continues to
grace Valencia during this
month. On 1st November
everyone has the opportunity
to enjoy a long weekend
and take advantage of great
hotel deals and a cultural and
culinary programme that is
full of activities.
This month gives us the
opportunity to visit Valencia
twice, once for the long
weekend celebrating
the Constitution, on 6th
December, and then again
for Christmas itself. With the
streets decorated and full of
atmosphere, visitors can take
advantage of the Christmas
markets, afternoons of
shopping and lots going
for the little ones with the
circuses, the fairgrounds or
the workshops at the City of
Arts and Sciences and the
Expo Jove at Feria Valencia.
Listen to the notes of the
carols and view the elaborate
nativity scenes in churches
in the city centre. New Year’s
Eve and the procession of
the Three Magi from the East
along the streets in the centre
ensure there is a Christmas in
Valencia for everyone.

Big dates for big stages in Valencia
Valencia y el sector de reuniones empiezan el otoño con fuerza, entre
ellas destacan algunas como el Congreso de la Sociedad Española de
Cardiología en Feria Valencia, que sumará a 4.000 asistentes.
Valencia and its conference industry starts the autumn season in force.
One of the main highlights is the Congress of the Spanish Society of
Cardiology, held at Feria Valencia, which will host some 4,000 attendees.

Y es que las cifras en el sector congresual son
positivas para la ciudad, ya que en los primeros 8
meses de 2013 el número de delegados creció
en un 22%, respecto al mismo período de 2012.
Según la Asociación Internacional de Congresos y
Convenciones (ICCA), la ciudad creció en reuniones
internacionales un 30% en 2012 respecto a 2011 y
la situó como quinta ciudad no capital de nación a
nivel europeo y decimocuarta no capital de nación a
nivel mundial para esta categoría. Los datos de esta
organización muestran que Valencia es la ciudad
europea que más ha crecido desde 2002, con un
acumulado del 308%.
Otra entidad internacional, la Unión Internacional
de Asociaciones (UIA), coloca en su ránking de
2012 a Valencia como quinta ciudad europea
y décima mundial no capital de nación en
organización de congresos internacionales,
superando a Washington, Vancouver, Dubai o
Nueva York.
Durante el presente ejercicio, Valencia ha sido sede
de reuniones como la de la Sociedad Española de
Hipertensión, CEVISAMA, la presentación del nuevo
Ford Kuga, Eurotraining -un evento de Mercedes
Benz- o el Open de España de Golf. Sólo en el
Palacio de Congresos está previsto que la
actividad congresual genere en otoño más de
16.000 pernoctaciones y 5 millones de Euros
de impacto económico para la ciudad. Con
estos datos, Valencia es desde luego, un destino
demandado por el turismo de negocios.
The congress sector statistics are positive for
the city. In the first eight months of 2013, the
number of delegates grew by 22% compared
to the same period in 2012. According to the
International Congress and Convention Association
(ICCA), the number of international meetings
in the city grew by 30% in 2012 compared to
2011, making it the fifth ranked non capital city at
European level in this category, and the fourteenth
globally. Data released by this organization shows
that Valencia is the European city that has grown
most since 2002, with an aggregate growth of
308%.
Another international organization, the International
Union of Associations (UIA), ranked the city
Valencia as 5th in its European rankings and
tenth globally, for national non capital cities
hosting international conferences, beating
Washington, Vancouver, Dubai and New York.
During the current year, Valencia has hosted
numerous conferences, for the Spanish Society
of Hypertension, CEVISAMA, the presentation
of the new Ford Kuga, Eurotraining (an event for
Mercedes-Benz) and the Spanish Golf Open.
Congresses held in the Palacio de Congresos
(the Congress Centre) alone are expected to
generate over 16,000 overnight stays and an
economic impact of 5 million euros for the
city. This data shows that Valencia is certainly a
sought-after destination for business tourism.

A specialist in liver transplants, Dr. Mir is considered
an authority on the treatment of liver disease and liver
transplants, both nationally and internationally. He and
his team have performed over 1,680 transplants and his
prestige and excellent practice have been the driving
force behind Valencia hosting congresses such as the
ILTS conference in 2011. He tells us that what helped
bring this about was the fact that Valencia started to
gain fame through hosting the America ‘s Cup and the
Formula 1, the city’s light, the Mediterranean climate, the
City of Arts and Sciences and the city’s infrastructure.
José Mir says Sorolla defined Valencia very well, full of
light and colour, and he believes that visitors should not
miss the contrasts of the old city, its more contemporary
and rural parts, and the nature and the Albufera park.
He still remembers the flood and the transformation the
city has undergone since then, when it was destroyed,
to how it is today - a modern city. His favourite places
are the Plaza de la Reina, the Plaza de la Virgen and the
Old City. His favourite season is spring, “when the city
smells of orange blossom.” And because he always has
Valencia in his thoughts, as he is “pure Valencian,” he
does not need to take anything with him in the suitcase
to remember the city.
Time Travel in the crypt of St. Vincent Martir
Dating from the sixth century, this is one of the oldest and unknown places in the city. In it, a chapel reminds us that here once
stood the prison where one of the patrons of the city, San Vicente
Martir, was locked up and tortured. Here, archaeology lovers are
in luck, as there is a stretch of Kardo Maximus, part of the Via
Augusta, and a mural of Mercury. For a while it was used to house Arab baths, and the decorated ceramics on display are also
exceptionally interesting. The video and the explanation on the
history of the Saint plunge us into the atmosphere of the time.

Especializado en trasplantes hepáticos, el Doctor
Mir está considerado como una eminencia en el
tratamiento de la patología hepática y el trasplante
hepático a nivel nacional e internacional. Junto con su
equipo, han realizado 1.680 trasplantes y su prestigio
y buen hacer han sido los artífices de que Valencia
acoja congresos como el ILTS 2011. Él nos cuenta que
contribuyeron a este hecho el que Valencia comenzara
a ser conocida por la America’s Cup y la Fórmula 1,
por la luz, el Mediterráneo, el clima, la Ciudad de las
Artes y las Ciencias y las infraestructuras. José Mir
dice que Sorolla definió Valencia muy bien, llena de luz
y color y cree que un visitante no debe perderse los
contrastes de la ciudad vieja, la más contemporánea
y la rural y llena de naturaleza como la Albufera.
Todavía recuerda la riada y la transformación que
ha experimentado la ciudad desde entonces, que
quedó destrozada a hoy, que es una ciudad moderna.
Sus lugares favoritos son la Plaza de la Reina, la
de la Virgen y la Ciudad vieja y su estación favorita,
la primavera, “cuando huele a azahar”. Y como él
siempre lleva a Valencia en su pensamiento, porque es
“puramente valenciano”, no necesita llevar nada en la
maleta para recordarla.
Viaje en el tiempo en la Cripta de San Vicente
Mártir
Datada del siglo VI, es uno de los lugares más antiguos e inéditos
de la ciudad. En ella una capilla recuerda que allí se ubicó la cárcel donde estuvo encerrado y fue torturado uno de los patrones
de la ciudad, San Vicente Mártir. Allí, los amantes de la arqueología están de suerte, pues encontramos un tramo del Kardo
Máximo, prolongación de la Via Augusta, así como una pintura
mural de Mercurio. Durante un tiempo fue usada como lugar de
baños árabes, también son excepcionalmente interesantes las
cerámicas decoradas en exposición. El vídeo y la explicación de
la historia del Santo nos sumerge en la atmósfera de la época.
La Valencia árabe en los Baños del Almirante
Construidos en 1313, en plena época cristiana, se idearon como
baños de vapor o hammam, característicos de la arquitectura islámica. Son los únicos en España de arte mudéjar que se han
mantenido activos desde su fundación hasta el siglo XX. En 1959
se cierran al público para restaurarlos y convertirlos en gimnasio,
posteriormente cerraron de nuevo hasta 2005, año en que se reabrieron para su visita al público. Ubicados en el centro histórico,
junto al palacio de los Almirantes de Aragón, es uno de los pocos
lugares que conserva la influencia de la cultura árabe en la ciudad.
Arab Valencia at the Baños del Almirante
Built in 1313 during the Christian era, these baths were conceived as hammam or steam baths, and are characteristic of the Islamic architecture of the time. They are the only baths in Spain
with Moorish art that were actively used since their construction
right through to the twentieth century. In 1959 they were closed to
the public and restored and converted into a gym, and they later
closed again until 2005, when they were reopened to the public.
Located in the historic centre, next to the Palacio de los Almirantes
de Aragón, this is one of the few places that retain the influence of
