Health and Wellness Ministries: Body, Mind, and spirit
Meditation
The term meditation refers to a group of techniques, many of which have their
roots in religious or spiritual traditions, as it is true with our own faith. Today
many people meditate for health and wellness. For our purposes spirit will be
included.
Meditation is believed to lead to a state of relaxation, mental calmness, alertness
and psychological balance. Practicing meditation can change how we relate to
the flow of emotions and thoughts. It also may help us control how we respond
to a challenging situation.
Meditation may be practiced on its own or as other mind-body-spirit therapy.
Meditation may be the perfect complement to the rush of our busy and complicated lives. As the evidence supporting the use of meditation grows, adding it to
our daily schedule may be an antidote we may need to deal with a hectic routine.
In addition, if meditation helps to lower blood pressure and reduce stress in our
lives, so much the better. The long-term benefits of meditation continues to undergo study.
Experimenting will assist us in ascertaining what types of meditation works best
for us and what we enjoy doing the most.
What the research says
Different forms of meditation have been tested in over one thousand clinical trials. The overall evidence supports the use of meditation for a variety of conditions and circumstances.
Anxiety and stress Various types of meditation are used in a variety of circumstances. Studies have included folks with illness such as cancer and depression.
Meditation has been shown to reduce anxiety, decrease anger and decrease stress
in folks with cancer.
Fibromyalgia Improvement in symptoms have been reported among people with
fibromyalgia who practice mindfulness meditation.
High blood pressure Several studies indicate a program of meditation effectively reduces blood pressure in people with hypertension.
Other Meditation has also been shown to improve attention, decrease job burnout, improve sleep, decrease chronic pain, and improve blood sugar control.
Inner peace Research has shown that meditation facilitates an inner peace where
prayer and hope are nurtured.

Teen Reflection for Sunday June 26, 2016
1 Kings 19:16b, 19–21, Psalm 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11, Galatians 5:1, 13–18, Luke 9:51–62
Reflection
Today’s readings are about the path of discipleship, learning to following God’s will and leaving our own will behind.
The readings ask us what price we would pay to follow God? Are the ways of the world today—needing money, spending time beating the next level of the newest game, working hard to be the best athlete—worth it? If Jesus came back
today, would he find a friend in you to chill with for a little while? Sometimes we like to think that Jesus simply came to
tell us how to live the good life according to our definition of goodness. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the definition of discipleship is costly and we need to be secure in our choices—no matter our age.
Action: Take a look at where your time is spent. Are you spending too much time doing things that don’t matter? Do
you spend enough time with people you love or pursuing worthwhile opportunities? Spend time this week focussing on
someone else’s needs and not worrying so much about your own needs.
What does the word “disciple” actually mean? What does it mean to you? Are you a good example of a Christian disciple for your friends?
The Vocation Chalice is given to Mike and Pat Crandall. God has used
ordinary people to make known the Good News! Thank you Mike and
Pat for accepting the vocational chalice for this week and for all those
who have accepted in the weeks past and for all those who will accept
the call to pray for our priests, and to pray for all those considering
the call to the priesthood! And thank you Fr. David for being our
priest and for your vocation to the priesthood. May the God of all
grace, who has called you to witness to him, confirm you and make
you strong and sure in your faith. Amen!
