Federation of Cartoonists Organisations
Daily we are shaken by news about incomprehensible
wars, hates between nations or bloody usurpers.
Those facts make us to consider, once more, that
there´s something amiss with humanity. As a counter-attack on these misfortunes we can say that caricatures and cartoons have been always useful with
their risky criticism and their bluntly humour.

Creativity is not what we are lacking, but those who
close the doors to the free development of this creativity. For example, the promoters of some of the
most important Cartoon Festivals leave us in the lurch,
and also the mayors who are leaving and the mayors
who come without showing any interest in Cartooning; so the entrepreneurs who on behalf of crisis decide not to invest relatively little else for the support
of an exhibition and some prizes or a good catalogue.
Not to mention the decline of interest also in the
media almost everywhere in the world.
That´s how we are. Creativity is still standing, older
artists are followed by new generations eager to
show their humorous and critical ability.., reasons for
slapping against systems remain fully. But they adjust
us the tourniquet for the sake of saving money “for
this sort of things” and we realize with much sadness
that in this way they close us the doors to freedom of
encounters, to the pleasure or receiving a prize, to the
joy of an exchange of opinion between colleagues, to
the ability to feel directly what is drawn here and there.
If we continue like this we will have no more than run contests on the Internet, where we do not see each
other nor we can complain or ask why this or that member of the jury found good such cartoon; where finally
we will find displeased people because the award was perhaps not well granted or because someone found
a similar idea and then they will say that we encourage plagiarism…
All this would be a sad future for the world of humour, but I´m hopeful that things will change and that one
can re-open the doors of many well-established salons or for new contests for coming.

Nos sacuden a diario las noticias de guerras incomprensibles, de odios entre pueblos o de sangrientos usurpadores. Estas cosas nos hacen pensar una vez más que algo está fallando con la humanidad. Como contra ataque
a estas desgracias siempre fueron y siguen siendo útiles la caricatura y el cartoon con su crítica audaz y su
humor sin rodeos.
La creatividad no es lo que nos está fallando, pero sí los que cierran las puertas al libre desenvolvimiento de
esta creatividad. Nos fallan por ejemplo los promotores de varios de los más importantes salones de humor y
caricatura, los intendentes que se van y los intendentes que vienen sin demostrar el interés del anterior, los
empresarios que en nombre de la crisis deciden no invertir más lo relativamente poco que representa para
ellos sustentar una exposición y un par de premios o un buen catálogo. Ni hablemos del interés también en
declive de los medios de prensa en casi todas partes del mundo.
Así es como estamos. La creatividad sigue en pie, a los dibujantes mayores les siguen nuevas generaciones ansiosas de demostrar su capacidad humorística y crítica.., motivos para las bofetadas contra los sistemas sigue
habiendo con creces. Pero nos ajustan el torniquete en aras del ahorro “para este tipo de cosas” y con mucha
tristeza nos damos cuenta que de esta forma nos cierran las puertas a la libertad de los reencuentros, al placer
de recibir un premio, a la alegría de un intercambio de opiniones entre colegas, a la posibilidad de palpar directamente lo que se dibuja aquí y allá.
Si seguimos así no nos quedará más que realizar concursos por Internet, donde no nos vemos las caras ni podemos protestar o preguntar por qué a tal o cual miembro del jurado le pareció bueno tal cartoon; donde finalmente sólo nos encontraremos con gente disgustada porque el premio quizás no estuvo bien otorgado o
porque alguien encontró una idea similar y entonces se nos dirá que fomentamos el plagio…
Todo esto sería un triste futuro para el mundo del humor gráfico, pero no pierdo las esperanzas de que las
cosas cambien y de que se puedan volver a abrir las puertas de muchos Salones y concursos bien establecidos
o para los nuevos por venir.
