C onceived as research laboratories, the Masters of Design and Innovation have created an environment that promotes divergent thinking and the analysis of current design from a range of different approaches: concept and business strategy, production and communication. The projects completed during each of the masters are also the result of the interaction and collaboration between the students and the Program Leaders, tutors and professionals. Through a fruitful interdisciplinary and intercultural debate we have generated a space in which to establish possible future scenarios, turn them into business opportunities, create new products and develop an effective and original concept of communication aimed at new markets and audiences. Currently, the IED Madrid is carrying out a thorough revision of its education models. There is a clear need for reflection on the teaching of design and a school like ours has to take a step forward, marking out new lines of research and new proposals in tune with a constantly mutating society. This innovative course of action must create spheres of learning and continual updating, developing technologies and methodologies, especially because the school is no longer the main source of information, but Internet, although knowledge continues to need interpretation. This will involve a transformation of teacher into tutor, as well as being responsible for basic knowledge. The impetus for renovation is clearly given from the very basis of the art of teaching: the programmes, the lessons and the studentteacher relationship. There are courses in which this impetus is stronger and clearer, as in the case of the Masters of Design and Innovation, which represent our most innovative proposal in both content and methodologies. From this masters to the school, that is how the good results of a training experience have been interpreted, which year after year, gives an example of how close and high-quality didactics can be the driving force for the development of talents. The platform of the Masters of Design and Innovation will be a model to consider, for within it coexist the most different global realities. It is an example of coexistence, collaborative work and shared creativity, which has found appropriate support in the IED Madrid: active and stimulating, open and always attentive to the voice and sensitivity of our students. Director Científico IED Madrid / Scientific Director of the IED Madrid Without doubt, this edition of the Masters of Design and Innovation has been marked by the change in the leadership of three of the four courses. The new Program Leaders have given a new approach to the teaching programme and the research lines for the students’ projects, as well as promoting a renovation of the professionals involved in teaching. The change responds to a clear desire for innovation, to the need to search and do research, always in the direction of those contents that have most interest and are in most demand in the current market. At the same time, reflection ponders on the way of learning: re-examining methodologies and processes so that the training experience will be satisfactory and productive. In order to carry out this change in the teaching approach the concept of platform has been reinforced, understood as the place where the shared subjects are strengthened by means of different types of activities. Furthermore, collaborative work and the need to share knowledge and skills are encouraged, with the aim of simulating the real contexts of a post-master. Decidedly, the experience of this year will lay the foundations for the next edition: more platform, more shared works in a first phase of the training period so that, subsequently, specialisation can be centred on the thesis projects and their execution. Methods will be shared and will be developed in an area” for everyone” so that dialogue is enriched between professionals with different training, culture and experiences. The great changes that have taken place in the last few decades have modified the reference and interpretation systems of the modern world. At the same time, a reflection on the future of our societies and civilisations becomes increasingly urgent. A globalised world like ours needs not only to identify the trends that guide its changes, but also to intervene by means of advanced innovation in the configuration of that horizon. Thus, design is one of the most significant instruments when defining the new forms of culture. In its intent it belongs in its own right to the so called project culture; in its applications it is the moment in which all those elements are decided, which modernise and transform not just uses, but also tastes, ways of perception, and even needs. Every reflection on design ends by being a reflection on the trends of culture and their projects. Nobody is unaware that these observations acquire greater force if the context that defines them is that of a culture like ours, subject to profound acceleration and innovation processes, whose reach crosses all the domains of science and life, production and society. To intervene in these processes, as the Master of Design and Innovation students have done in their theses, is one of the responsibilities of those who take on the task of constructing the societies of the future. T he Masters of Design and Innovation are supported methodologically in the culture of the project and in the concept of "learning while doing", where the focus of learning is in the spirit of action and participation. These programmes, where work and research go side by side in the training process, contemplate various activities, both individual and group, in which the students interact with professionals, companies and their own classmates. The relation between disciplines is promoted, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, ideas, opinions and experiences, with the aim of giving students a stimulating and enriching training which helps them in their professional image. In each case the most suitable format will be applied to ensure correct development of the content: Workshops: collective activities in which the students put into practice the knowledge they have acquired and experiment with new concepts and tools from different approaches. Seminars: meetings with professionals at which the objective is to lay solid the foundations of knowledge specific to each programme, with the aim of guaranteeing the successful carrying out of ideas. Lectures and case studies: activities that bring to students the experiences of some of the most outstanding professionals in today’s environments. Trips: an opportunity to enhance students’ vision in other environments, make professional contacts and extend their activities in various institutions, companies and spaces. Visits: offer the possibility of enabling students to get to know, in situ, the inspiration, work or production spaces and places, where projects are developed, processes are followed or professional contacts can be made. Tutorials: personalised follow-up of the student’s training process. Different professionals supervise the research process and the correct development of the thesis project. Desde la innovación y el emprendimiento, apostando por un desarrollo que no siempre lleva aparejado el crecimiento. he designer is moved by curiosity in the face of new challenges and the passion to find possible solutions, and as Massimo Vignelli said: “creativity needs the support of knowledge to be able to perform at its best”. This knowledge is the nutrient that, with awareness and responsibility, enables us to overcome the challenges that arise in an increasingly more complex context, and it is our polyhedral vision which facilitates tackling them successfully. For this reason, the Department of Sustainability of the IED Madrid works to respond to the commitment that design has with society and with our environment, guaranteeing the quality of life of today’s and future generations. From the Area of Sustainability, training is offered to the Masters of Design and Innovation students, whose core is the systemic, responsible and passionate approach to the project, focusing on people, their wellbeing and that of ecosystems. From innovation and entrepreneurship, we wager on a development which does not always go hand in hand with growth. A t the IED Master we firmly believe in transversal training and research, and that is why we have equipped a place for multidisciplinary creation, called the MDI Lab, where meetings, activities and experiences are promoted. This space meets the students’ needs during the creative process. It is a laboratory where students from the different programmes will be able to do research, get together and work on collective projects or on their own final thesis. All types of profiles co-exist there and diverse synergies are created, which undoubtedly make the results of these interactions richer in nuances and have a common link of interest in design, innovation, communication and strategy. Todo ello posibilita la adquisición de diferentes tipologías y modelos de proyecto transferibles a la tesis final del máster. he workshops are creative activities based on the combination of conceptual and practical exercises in a short period of time and they require complete dedication. They allow students to discover new methodologies, to strengthen their teamwork dynamics and to nurture a multidisciplinary approach to applying the knowledge acquired during the course. These workshops help teachers to determine the different creative skills of the students, allowing them to establish specific techniques to further improve them. Each of the workshops research into and work on a particular topic related to the area of product design, marketing communication, design concepts and business strategies in order to experiment with new creative tools and carry out a specific project under the guidance of outstanding professionals of international renown. All this enables the acquisition of different types and models of projects, which can be applied to the final thesis. 016 017 Circular Colour Tool Daniera ter Haar y Christoph Brach. Fundadores del estudio Raw Color / Daniera ter Haar and Christoph Brach. Founders of the Raw Color Studio. Starting from the proposal “Invent your own tools” taken from the Incomplete Manifesto for Growth by Bruce Mau, the workshop’s objective was the creation of Color Tools, new and creative tools with which to generate graphic images based on colour and kinetic and rotation movement. The students gave free reign to their imagination, taking as their starting point existing machines and tools as well as different elements (lamps, feathers, food, etc.) to combine them, transform them and turn them into new utensils with unheard of features. The teachers encouraged the young designers to question the meaning and function of the material with which they were working, letting them follow where their curiosity led them. After preliminary research, the students were confronted by a production process based on constant experimentation and intuition, in order to expand the borders of their own design projects. 018 019 Creative Thinking Juan Prego. Socio Director de Actitud Creativa / Juan Prego. Managing Partner of Actitud Creativa ¿Cómo trabajar la creatividad? How can creativity be promoted? How can we create a space which fosters better ideas and less time? Juan Prego, an expert in creativity and Managing Partner of Actitud Creativa, directed a workshop to demonstrate to students the tools necessary for carrying out really exceptional ideas. The task set for this Creativity Workshop was very simple: all the Masters of Design and Innovation students had to transform their work space, the MDI Lab, with very limited budgets. After several sessions with Juan Prego on how to create a successful project from a good idea, the students, divided into groups, rapidly developed their creative thinking, coming up with all kinds of projects: the re-structuring of lab space using their tables, the creation of a chill-out zone, a creative notice board, etc. 020 021 Wood Alberto Marcos. Arquitecto y diseñador, Fundador de Estudio AMPS y Ninetonine Company / Alberto Marcos, Architect and designer. Thanks to the workshop led by Alberto Marcos, the students of the Master of Product Design Labs have applied their talent to the creation of wooden toys for children. The designs are made to be developed by Gospel House Handicrafts (Sri Lanka), from where COPADE imports sustainable wooden toys. This organisation aims to create employment and training to young people without resources and limited education from this country. After a series of sessions with Alberto Marcos and an intense work at the modelling workshop at the IED Madrid, the Master of Product Design Labs obtained excellent results in this motivating challenge: to manufacture entertaining and educational wooden toys with an innovating design process to reach new markets in Spain. 022 023 Concepts & Ideas Alejandro Masferrer. Cofundador de The Pop Up Agency / Alejandro Masferrer. Any commercial communication process requires creatives to follow different creative stages: the definition of the creative strategy, the development of concepts and ideas that shape the strategy and the selection of channels in which to carry it out. The students of the Master of Communication Design Labs delved into the second stage of the process along with the designer Alejandro Masferrer. How to create innovative concepts? How to generate valuable ideas to offer solutions to business problems? Can all this be done in just one week? In small groups, students faced a real briefing: how to bring AIAIAI (a Danish company which provides headphones for musicians) to the mainstream public. The challenge was to present a solution to the final client in just 20 hours! The results were very professional projects with a totally digital approach, focused on the user: young and different solutions to the brand’s problem. Every day it becomes more necessary to challenge the current mentality in order to generate business models, which break moulds and let us glimpse new innovative possibilities. That is why Víctor Martínez, a researcher who specialises in sustainable development applied to design, joined the Masters of Design and Innovation to challenge students to introduce the concept of Systemic Thought in the design of products, communication and business ideas. The process of creation carried out by students started from the definition of a problem, the investigation and analysis of stakeholders, and the discovery of relevant insights in order to finally create a business model that would respond to the detected needs. The designers, as information synthesizers, formed different ideas, visualising how they would generate economic, environmental and social sustainability with their projects. 026 027 Give and Take Mario Minale y Kuniko Maeda. Fundadores del estudio Minale-Maeda / Mario Minale and Kuniko Maeda. Poised halfway between the creation of useful products and artistic expression, the Minale-Maeda studio, is composed of the designers Kuniko Maeda (Tokyo) and Mario Minale (Naples), who came to the Master of European Design Labs to carry out the Give and Take workshop. It carried out for the master developed from the selection of two objects: one which represents the “pretty”, and the other the “ugly”. From there, research and conceptual analysis led each student to inquire into what qualities make the objects either a symbol of beauty or ugliness. Also, these conclusions had to be reflected in a conceptual exercise that started from chosen designs and, through a series of processes like adding, subtracting, improving, bringing up to date, cloning, synthesizing, etc., resulted in the development of a new vision of the present and the past. 028 029 Nature in the City Jack Mama. The potential for design to resolve urban environmental problems is clear, and for this reason the students of the Master of Product Design Labs have carried out a workshop to improve the quality of life of citizens, the community and stakeholders within the relation of the cities of the future with nature. In charge of challenging the students in search of a solution in this context was Jack Mama. He transmitted his vision of the research initiatives called “far future”, whose aim is to identify systemic movements and anticipate the changes in future lifestyles. Also, the students, within their work to find relevant solutions, explored the incorporation of new techniques, new categories of products, new contexts, etc., which could serve as the basis for later, more advanced research in the master. How can we find opportunities which had not even occurred to the manufacturers? With the aim of reconsidering Re-board material, the designers Ben Wilson and Andre Klauser have worked together with the students of the Master of Product Design Labs. The search for new uses and applications for this material challenged the young designers to carry out a project from the initial idea to the final production of the prototype. The idea was to generate new and innovative concepts, and promote experimentation by means of prototypes and models until the final product was reached. Given that Re-board material is a rigid paperboard, the results developed its main characteristics, leading to all types of furniture projects, products and displays. In this workshop the students explored the limits between design and social innovation, and researched into the scope of Service Design, a field of interdisciplinary design that combines the best of creativity, empathy and strategy, as well as that of Social Innovation, a process that generates value and a positive change in response to complex social problems. Solar Oven Azusa Murakami y Alexander Groves. Fundadores de Studio Swine / Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves. Founders of Studio Swine. An entrepreneur must be able to convince potential investors of his project in just one elevator trip. With this philosophy in mind, the concept of the Elevator Pitch arose. Designing, executing and communicating is more effective when it is done through a specific project. Moreover, this is enriched when it has a social vision or contributes sustainable values which allow us to respond to the needs of today’s society. The transversal approach does not subtract importance from any discipline, but encourages a holistic view and promotes the search for innovation strategies with a greater connection between different professional areas. The Special Projects of the Masters of Design and Innovation have integrated being, knowing, doing, communicating and sharing, directing work towards a common project through proposals, values and solutions. G iven that there is never a single response or approach to design, the Master of European Design Labs promotes experimentation, combined with research, analytical thinking and conceptual viewpoints, to achieve the best results for a project, and to enable each student to create his or her own identity and concept of design. Throughout the course, the experimentation with materials and techniques was as important as the theoretical exploration and research into where and why, to lend meaning to the results. The projects of this master course vary from products to production processes, from installations to experiences and should evoke dialogues and discussion, and they are united by the belief that design can convey stories, messages or meanings, not only as objects, but also as the ideas they represent. mischer’traxler studio Program Leaders del Master of European Design Labs mischer’traxler studio Program Leaders of the Master of European Design Labs E l Master of Communication Design Labs ha sido diseñado para cultivar a los profesionales creativos del futuro. Este proceso finaliza en un prototipo sustentado en el trabajo de todo el año, que recoge asimismo los numerosos análisis previos del entorno de investigación. he thesis of the Master of European Design Labs forms part of the area of conceptual design and the vision of students as creators and thinkers. Students will benefit from the process thanks to the research into and experimentation with materials and techniques, both new and traditional, and they will achieve a logical result, on the basis of the work carried out during the year, under the guidance of important professionals and extensive research. The proposals for the theses are to be found in the identity of each student and in a systemic approach that ranges from the theoretical definition of the product to its preliminary constructive definition. This process leads to a product based on a full year’s work, which also benefits from the many prior analyses carried out during the research process. Through research into trends and statistics concerning food consumption, social and living arrangements, I focused on single-occupancy living. The research showed a rise in people living on their own. My aim is to deliver a contemporary take on kitchen appliances. The kitchen should be a place to prepare meals quickly and efficiently. Through the research mentioned before I found out that the main concerns of people living alone, are storage, time, and space. After researching I realized that what interested me more was the ritual of food. Rituals involving food have taken place since the beginning of human life and have developed in many different forms, so nowadays we have developed our own rituals like eating popcorn when going to the movies, eating a sandwich on front of the computer, etc. We no longer need a specific dining room for rituals to take place: they happen anywhere imaginable. In fact many of these modern rituals are often performed alone. As a response to this growing trend of compact, changeable lifestyles in small apartments of single people, I would like to make a revision of the kitchen. It is a part of the house that is essential but it occupies a big space and not everybody uses it in the same way. The Gali kitchen aims to let each individual distribute their space as they want, having at their disposal everything necessary to cook when wanted or needed but allowing the living space to embrace new possibilities. MIRAGE Mirage is a design art work that creates a visual world by projecting shadows onto a wall. With it, people can encounter different environments even in the same place. Shadow is a good element to be considered and played with. We can cut it, draw it or just create a space with it. We can also use it to create darkness, arouse people’s curiosity or even make people nervous. It can be just beside us and nothing, and yet make us look brighter. So, how can we surprise people and disturb routine with shadows? The design concept of Mirage is to use shadow to create a streetscape. We make it by lighting several abstract pieces. The materials for making shadows (metal pieces, light) can be put into a movable box and taken anywhere. Since it is movable, it can not only be set up anywhere but can also be used at any moment with artificial light. The Mirage project includes ‘’surprise’’, ‘’curiosity’’ and ‘’discovery’’. We will show that even though we can scarcely change a lifestyle routine, the environment surrounding us is changing every day and all these changes can surprise us and take us to a magic world. GRANDMOTHER, FATHER AND DAUGHTER We are constantly leaving traces throughout life. A trace is a way of keeping the memory of a moment or an event in time and even existence itself. As human beings we have created our own set of tools to read, interpret and follow the traces left by our ancestors, as well as a set of tools to ensure that our traces are read by future generations. We do this to share our own experiences and memories; we share our stories so that these may be remembered in the future and also to ensure that our knowledge is preserved and does not get lost in time. There are no permanent traces, as these traces change from generation to generation. Each generation uses the information left by its ancestors and combines it with new experiences and thoughts; the essence of the ancestral trace is absorbed in this new generation and forms a new trace in itself. This project presents a sequence, each object being a copy of the previous one. Each copy is made with a different material, obtaining a different texture and quality, emphasising the identity of each generation. We understand that we are who we are because of the influence of our ancestors, and therefore we will also leave our own trace to be interpreted by our successors. E-HO In the work of Tomás Gracia, colours are protagonists, technique is the artist, the artist and his technique are blurred, they are merged and the artist merges with the spectator and the audience. Postmodern art poses new techniques in which the process of the work is fundamental; the process itself is the technique and is the work. Gracia is a fully postmodern artist, putting to the test the concept of what is artistic creation. For this artist creating does not just mean generating a product, but proposing new forms of making art and testing it. E-HO is an instrument, which despite its artisanal preparation and its apparent simplicity, is a contribution to the artistic media because it makes us ask ourselves how much innovation is being carried out, how much investigation there is into technique and it makes us uneasy, motivates us to go deeper into materials, giving them prominence. As regards his style, visually he could subtly remind us of the abstract expressionism of J. Pollock (dripping) for the mechanism of E-HO is activated by the artist but develops in a way that is independent of him, like a machine with its own operation. In this way, as in the case of Pollock, the artist only influences the first deliberate gesture, but not the development of the final stroke. JELLYFISH OR EAT TRANSPARENCIES For decades now, scientists have warned about the deterioration of our seas. Fish are dying out, because our liking for this food, the rapid population growth and overfishing have impacted on the seas to such an extent that some scientists have come to the conclusion that, in just a few years, our seas will be empty of fish. With this project, I want to pose a possible future stage for this dilemma, starting with the question, what would happen if… there are no fish in the seas? What implications would this have on our diet? Would other potentially edible marine species appear? My reflection is based on the idea of using the diversity of nature’s resources more efficiently, benefitting from what is abundant and not that which is becoming scarce. I have focused on studying the jellyfish, because of its great proliferation in the seas and because it is a healthy food source, which is unknown in the West. So, I have designed an event where the guests will be able to sample five culinary proposals that have jellyfish as the main ingredient, through a visual, sound, tactile and, above all, tasty experience, with the aim of designing a setting for debate and speculation about the future of the seas and our eating habits, allowing the audience to step outside its comfort zone and examine other, more daring, perspectives. STRUCTURAL LEATHER This project does not start from an interest in the advantages of a material, but from its disadvantages. Leather is a beautiful material, but it is extremely inefficient in terms of its manufacturing process because just 16% of a hide is top quality. This means that around 84% is considered waste material by companies involved in the production of high-end leather goods. And, very often, the apparently worthless material ends up being thrown away, due to the lack of efficient recycling methods in the leather industry. In this project, leather leftovers have been reclaimed as the source of a new construction material, and a series of pieces of furniture have been made created in order to showcase its structural properties. The diversity and abundance of discarded leather pieces offers intriguing outcomes and great potential for sustainable growth. ECO TAGTIL - ECO TOUCH During Victorian times more than 3,600 elephants were killed to make ivory piano keys, for it had been proved that ivory was a material that absorbed the sweat on the hands, so fingers did not slip and prints were not left on the keys and it also gave the piano a luxury touch. Today piano keys are made of plastic, a nonbiodegradable material that takes from 100 to 1,000 years to break down and even so, does not have the same features. After research into several materials which might be able to replace ivory, share the same characteristics and, chiefly, would not be an environmental hazard, I discovered that in my country, Colombia, there exists a vegetable ivory, the tagua nut. This is the seed from a tropical palm tree, Phytelephas macrocarpa, found in the Amazon. Today, thousands of Colombian artisans live by using it to make jewellery, without realising the features of this material. This seed is the same as hippopotamus ivory. Even under a microscope it looks identical and has the same characteristics. The only way to distinguish the two is by using sulphuric acid, which gives a pink colour to the Tagua Nut but doesn’t change the colour of ivory. So... why continue using ivory, with the harm it causes to endangered species? Why use plastic, which is damaging to the environment? REPETITION - the process and outcomes Repetition, routines, and rituals can be spotted everywhere in our daily lives. While most people find repetition dreadful and boring, I think otherwise. During the process, one can observe the many aspects of repetition that are often overlooked and unappreciated: evolution, learning curve, notion of advancing and tolerance, just to name a few. Being inspired by daily phenomena related to repetition, it has become my goal to recreate situations and objects that illustrate repetition and remind the general public of its forgotten beauty. My intention was to combine a repetitive and mechanical method with a hand-made process in which the experiments/objects were made by my own two hands. For me, it is also important to express the notion of a learning curve throughout my projects. I made the decision to turn the last two projects into a collapsible collection of objects, which can be viewed together to observe the learning curve, or alone as a single piece that represents individual creation during a process. However, like the topic of repetition itself, it is a continuous learning process that will keep on expanding; and the Everyday Bowl collection is only part of that process. ANTIDOTES / UPCYCLING PLASTIC A widespread use of plastic as a tailormade modern clay fulfills our daily needs. It is a strong, low-cost, durable and lightweight material that has quickly become disposable. Easy to transform and upcycled, it can be turned from a global problem into a benefit. Almost a kilo per person of disposable plastic containers leave our doorway every week, giving rise to several million tons of plastic residue that not only damage our marine life but end up back to our dining tables in the form of micro-particles. Plastic pollution is a global issue that affects everyone, material that has been accumulating exponentially for more than 50 years. This issue isn’t going away anytime soon. Creating a conversation starter through an easy do-it-yourself process, grinding and using low temperature and compression-molding, these different types of polymer can be upcycled into new pieces, working with its properties in our favor. The value of design is linked to cultural and logistical realities. As designers, we share skills that often become synonymous with upgrading antidotes. Upcycling plastic can be one of them. 100% SAND Everything in the natural world is shaped by the environment in which it exists. Sand is formed by natural forces and weather conditions, over a long history of wear and time. The project explores if and how design processes can take advantage of the integration of natural elements in terms of creation. With 100% SAND we seek to establish a balance between materials with a high sand content. We have chosen the two most important in terms of history and percentage: concrete, with 60%, and glass, with 40%. I was intrigued by sand, since it is a naturally-occurring material that is easy to find, consisting of very small particles of decomposed rocks, corals, or shells, and if you stare long enough at the sand around you on a beach, you quickly become aware of how much there is. But we are unaware of the amount of sand that surrounds us in our daily lives, in materials as concrete and glass. This work emerges from an exploration to diagnose the behaviour of this material, playing with the quantity and different types of sand. We illustrate this by taking a new approach to traditional production methods and existing materials to create unique experimentation pieces in which these materials melt into each other, where all is possible due to the prescence of sand. 156 157 Ruohong Wu China / China Arquitecto / Architect [email protected] www.ruohongwu.com ALL DIFFERENT, ALL EQUAL ALL DIFFERENT, ALL EQUAL Cuando los artesanos intentan trabajar como máquinas, Cuando las industrias intentan falsificar la obra de artesanía, Se crea la brecha cultural entre arte y diseño en la China contemporánea. When craftsmen try to work like machines, When industries try to fake the craftwork, This gives rise to the cultural gap in art an design in contemporary China. Following a trip to a Chinese town of ceramic artisans, it became clear that there is a huge gap between delicate handicrafts and fast, cheap industrial production in contemporary Chinese culture, which results in the loss of identity of artisans and industries. The project involved finding new ways to approach the industrialized system, not just as a linear process for identical duplications, but introducing an uncontrolled factor, made by using craft skills to produce variables. The intention was not to equalize ‘uniqueness’ with ‘pricing’ or ‘time span’, but to establish an affordable production system, where craftsmanship can be moved in a direction that can be shared by contemporary society. The project consists of a collection of ceramic pieces, a research publication, a film that captures the designer’s research trip to Jing De Zhen in China, and interviews with artisans. The pieces are made by combining typical industrial processes in ceramic making, such as slip casting, with a classic craft skill, like carving. The pattern of carving is linked to typical ornamental elements in China, while adapting to object homogeneity. This approach seeks to use the professional experiences gained during the master to guide each student toward efficient strategies and creative solutions. Ultimately, it is a matter of them providing a differentiating element to the brand in order to question how it should interact with its target audience. The students have enjoyed the support of the Program Leader and tutors throughout the year, as well as meetings with specialized professionals, to integrate and expand their knowledge and successfully carry out the processes involved in the development of the project. MOUTH POWER We use our mouths as part of our daily conversation, to communicate our ideas and get in touch with others. My brand, Listerine, realised the importance of that and, since 1920, has been providing all the protection the mouth needs, with the slogan “kill germs that cause bad breath”. But nowadays there are many companies that claim to do the same, and because of that I saw the need for a new slogan for customers to rely on. Now, I wanted to remind people that Listerine believes you have something to say, an important idea to share and an opinion to give. Yes our mouths can be fresh and healthy but they can only do miracles if we speak, and today, who better than you to say what you are thinking. Listerine has stored up that belief in each and every one of us, and transmitted it through the self-confidence that is preached by the brand. You may be an adolescent student, an entrepreneur or a grandmother; if you have an idea that can really make a change then we want to hear about it. We believe that successful individuals are the direct result of their actions, although sometimes people lack the self-confidence to speak out. Now Listerine wants to give the public the push it needs to take that leap. So… Are your ideas worth sharing? Believe in yourself, tell us about them and let your mouth make the moves. STRAVA Strava is a mobile application enabling runners and cyclists to track their progress, offering detailed data on their activities through maps, routes and infographics of the progress: all of this on a social platform, a community of virtual athletes, where they can compete, share and be motivated. The object of my project thesis was to develop a communication strategy that would lead to an increase in the number of members using the free version of Strava in Europe, where the brand’s greatest problem is lack of awareness of it. To this end, instead of continuing to base the brand’s message on competitiveness and the slogan “Prove it”, we'll do a turnabout to connect with amateur athletes who do not have to compete and are looking more towards enjoying themselves and progressing. It was on that search that I discovered the strong, intimate and personal relationship that sportspeople have with the places where they perform their activities, in which the spaces collect their memories while, at the same time, they themselves know these places in a different way, which allows them to own those places. So, I proposed sport as a way of taking possession of the places that you pass through cycling and running, and Strava as the tool that allows you to improve, so you can go farther and get to know more spaces. CARHARTT WIP Identity and fashion are intimately linked. Clothes reveal, express and shape our identity. They also offer a useful approach to explore the changing ways in which people constitute themselves in urban culture. Carhartt Work In Progress is positioned as the top streetwear brand in Europe, aimed at an active urban live. The aim is to turn the original North American brand Carhartt, which focuses on workwear, into an avant-garde lifestyle. Up to now, the brand has been closely linked to the skate and BMX scene. Because of this, those who grew up with the brand no longer feel close to it. I propose a reinterpretation of the positioning of the brand, without alienating its former market, in order to reach a target with greater spending power, to reconnect with those who used to wear Carhartt. For those who have grown up and now have different styles and needs, I aim to increase the urban scene scale and redirect the brand philosophy, to make it more appropriate and less confusing. My creative concept is based on the idea of the nomadic as an evolution of work styles. The generation who has grown up with this brand is known for being multicultural, flexible and adaptable. Carhartt represents this new generation of minded and nomadic people who has given up fixed ideas and turns passion into work. JOSEPH / JO Joseph is a fashion brand, based in London and created by Joseph Ettedgui. During the 1970s and 1980s, Joseph was highly regarded by the fashion world and hailed as one of the best stores, with a liking for the minimalist style and high contrasts. Joseph had the invaluable eye of the curator and that’s why the Joseph flagship store, designed by Norman Foster, and others stores were celebrated in the fashion industry. Joseph was one of the pioneers in developing the idea of the “Concept Store”, before Collete and Corso Como. Nowadays Joseph dresses successful and independent women between the ages of 30 and 50. In 1999, he sold a majority of Joseph shares to Belgian and French investors, which led to the essence of the brand being lost. Today the brand doesn't have the same recognition that it had in the past and younger generations don't know about it. Therefore, the challenge of this project was to make Joseph more appealing to younger women and also make it the new brand of preference. For my project, I proposed to reconnect with the past and go back to the essence of the brand, offered in an alternative and attractive way for this new target. For that reason my solution was to create a new sub-brand that would be called JO and have a new philosophy, image and identity. This new sub-brand would be the new space for art, design and fashion, to which young women would come, attracted by the new atmosphere and spirit. AMADEUS The Amadeus IT Group is a leading technology firm that provides solutions for the global travel industry. Within the realm of their “let’s shape the future of travel” campaign, my thesis focuses on sustainable travel. The aim is to encourage the industry to not only consider commercial needs, but to also make a positive impact on society and the environment globally, by meeting the requirements of today without compromising the needs of tomorrow. With the evident negative impacts corporate practices are having on the environment and the social welfare of nations worldwide, more consumers are demanding the use of systems that might contribute to a more sustainable future comprehensively. The travel industry is lagging behind, yet needs to recognize that it is one of the few global sectors that is able to lead the shift towards a green economy. The idea is that Amadeus is going to proactively respond with an initiative and a new certification body that will evaluate the quality of travel products based on their sustainable value. This will allow the industry and travellers to recognize that the bottom line is not solely made up of economic benefits but also environmental and social ones. The campaign will consist of three milestones: awareness, desire and, ultimately, a new culture that changes the way people consume travel. At the same time, internationalization has become one of the preferred strategies for Spanish businesses, as a way to escape or as an opportunity. The project for the Bankinter brand is to convince businesses that are expanding internationally to use their support and financing services. My task is to define the communication strategy and develop creativity through different activities. The objective is to establish a relationship with the client that goes beyond the financial aspect, create content that can add value for them, improve the brand experience and remain relevant though the process. COCA COLA The Coca Cola Company is the world's largest beverage company. In recent years the brand has undergone a crisis regarding the perception people have of the product, making it more difficult to communicate its message. My goal is to convey to young people how to live a healthier life. Since Coke’s reputation is not the best, the challenge is to change this perception and make people associate the brand with a more positive message. The way I approached the problem of the negative perception involved changing the focus point of it and centring on the consumers’ psychology. I established new social terms that can be understood in any context, in the same way worldwide. The notions of Moderation, Harmony, and Balance as synonyms for health are the basis of this new communication bridge between the young and healthy and leading a balanced life. The field of development will be broad but with a strong bond, encompassing every aspect of health: Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Emotional and Material and within the subtopics to find the essence of Health, which will be represented in 4 elements that will be incorporated into a solution that leads young people not to think about how to have a healthy life but to live it. 176 177 María Isabel Urrutia Venezuela / Venezuela Comunicadora y Fotógrafa / Communicator and Photographer [email protected] POINTER FOOTWEAR Pointer es una marca inglesa independiente fundada en el 2004. POINTER FOOTWEAR Pointer is an English independent brand founded in 2004. Its idea is to produce shoes of high quality and design, which reflect its interest in the world of art, music, skateboarding and the European subculture. The brand has a minimalist style which mixes sports and casual designs. The project consists of carrying out a communication campaign directed at men and women between 20 and 35, where, starting from an insight, an emotional link is established between the brand and the consumer, in which the brand’s identity is strengthened in a consistent and attractive way in order to boost its reputation and sales. Despite having been on the market for ten years, Pointer has not managed to establish itself as a brand. The message it transmits is not clear or homogeneous. Its identity is indeterminate; it lacks a narrative to support it. Vans, Clarks, Nike have been the first option for consumers of these trends. Starting from this problem, a challenge was set: how to bring Pointer to people’s attention, taking into account that there are more economical and better known alternatives. In order to carry out this project, a strategy was created based on the main principle of the brand. Through the concept of duality, it hoped to establish a territory where Pointer could play with the different leads offered by this idea. CASA FIX CASA FIX is a new concept of the convenience hardware stores. This is a space where customers have access to all kinds of information, without the need for technicalities. At the same time it offers certification for professionals, supplying them with 360º knowledge and a digital platform where they can offer their services. I grew up surrounded by nuts and bolts, pipes and iron. It was in the family business, Ferretera Casa Blanca, that I discovered my passion for design. Contact with customers and suppliers awoke my curiosity about how to make the hardware store's language a language for all. On the other hand, I wanted to attack the professionals’ lack of knowledge and be able to create certification which would give them exposure and this knowledge. CASA FIX is a system which offers professionals a 360º certification, where a plumber could learn about electricity, bricklaying, painting, etc., saving the client time, money and having people in the house. This certification would include a digital platform for display and to reach clients, considerably better than traditional methods. All this, supported by physical stores that offer the general public a completely new experience in hardware store. IWI Iwi is a digital platform that will bring a daily menu of healthy meals to your table, depending on the needs of every customer that uses it. Today, there is a trend towards people wanting to change their eating habits and to eat more healthily. The idea is to take advantage of this and help people to adopt a diet which is as changeable as every user who needs it. The process from realizing this to coming up with the subject of the thesis started from an investigation into the tendencies and needs of users, for which I carried out interviews with different people who normally used platforms to order home-delivery meals. Then, an opportunity a need, was found, to lay out the idea more clearly with possible customers, partners and people who gave their point of view on the project, until I came up with a prototype of the business idea. DESIGN DIVAS The project aims to bring European fashion to India by connecting European designers to the Indian market. Designers from European nations like Spain, Italy and France will design for this market. The clothing will be manufactured in India and sold online there. The project’s main motivation is that India is a growing economy. The younger generation wants to be more International and there is a not a wide variety of European fashion available in India at affordable prices. The process consisted of interviews with the Indian target segment and European designers, and in-depth market research, followed by prototype testing and finally, preparing a business plan. WE’LL _MAKE IT REAL We’ll is a community that is changing the world by connecting socially-responsible creatives with real social needs in order to raise awareness and money. This project responds to a range of needs. We need more creativity to solve social problems and, in some way, to redistribute economy. Also, creatives need a platform where they can choose more interesting projects, earn money and gain international exposure in a different way. This is a community of socially-responsible creatives. The journey started with the idea of combining two passions: helping people and design. I’ve taken advantage of several trends, like crowdfounding, crowd-sourcing, co-creation, gamification and social networking to connect social problems with creatives. The process went through different stages, from the initial design to the development of the main idea, a business model canvas and business plan, designing the concept and prototyping it. 194 195 Benjamin van Gelder Bélgica / Belgium Diseñador Estratégico y Desarrollador de Negocio / Design Strategist and Business Development [email protected] www.cooksintown.com @cooksintown COOKS IN TOWN ¿No has pensado nunca que eres un gran cocinero y has querido mostrárselo a la gente que conoces? COOKS IN TOWN Haven’t you ever thought that you are a great cook and you would like to show this to everybody? I do. The problem is that a lot of people do not have a good kitchen to do it in, or good tools with which to prepare all the dishes that their friends are going to fall in love with. Cooks in town responds perfectly to that problem and to the desire to find more exclusive places where you can share a meal with the people you want. I am developing a project which connects hosts with people who love to cook in order to enjoy a unique cooking and dining experience. It is actually a mix between AirBnb for kitchen renting and the Jamie Oliver show, where he likes to cook for friends and demonstrate his talent at the same time. The whole project is divided into four different parts. First, the hosts who are going to offer their kitchen and eating area for a couple of hours; second, the guests who want to organize a meal; third, professional cooks or amateurs who can help guests who don’t know how to cook; fourth, events that include cooking classes, talks, private dinners in exclusive places and much more. My goal isto create a sharing and cooperative cooking model by creating a community around the cooking industry. GROG APP The idea is to create an app to provide a customizable list of geo-localized bars and nightlife events for the user and at the same time provide the smaller bars and pubs with a way to reach more people than they usually can. I decided to do this because when you move to a new town, be it due to traveling or simply because you have moved, it is hard to find out which bar, pub or club is the one that matches your taste. Another reason was to try and help the bars or pubs that might not have a huge promotion budget, by giving them a way to reach the largest amount of users/customers possible. I went out and asked bars and pubs to see what they thought about it and to see if they were interested, and once I had positive feedback from them I went to see if the end user would be interested and got good results, so I decided to start the process of seeing what was required, finding a business model and researching other similar tools to find out how they work and what to do and what not to do. Then it was time to prototype and test and this was done online via Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and a website, as well as a bit of targeted advertising which has been working well. Tras ésto, los estudiantes inician una investigación para la exploración de oportunidades bajo su propio punto de vista: investigan sobre materiales, experimentan con diferentes procesos... hasta llegar a la definición de un producto o servicio que dará las pautas para definir un prototipo real. he thesis of the Master of Product Design Labs offers the chance to explore, by means of the creation of products and services, the possible solutions to a range of problems affecting society, such as a shortage of resources, sustainability, the improvement of living conditions in cities, etc. At the start of the course, students must present a project for a scenario in which they would like to delve during the MA. Then, students embark on a research process into the various opportunities from their own point of view: materials, different process, etc. until they reach the definition of a project or service which will lead to a real prototype. A KITCHEN GARDEN FOR EVERYONE The project is based on the idea of motivating families to grow food for their own consumption, creating community gardens, which allow neighbours to get together, share knowledge and help each other. The final project consists of a load-bearing structure of seed boxes which allows families to be involved in the germination of their food from inside their homes, until the plants have grown enough and are ready to be transplanted into the community garden. As this is one of the most important stages of plant growth, the members of each family are responsible for making sure that the seeds have enough light, water and nutrients to be able to grow well. All this arose as a response to the enormous amount of food we waste every day, with the intention of reconnecting people with their food and, in this way, recover the habits that made us look after our food and make the most of it. The project was created based on research covering every sphere of food and its life cycle, from production until it reaches the hands of the consumer, and also on the observation of the bad habits related to the care and handling of food, in order to finally develop ideas that affect this area. “Perfume is the most intense form of memory”. Jean Paul Guerlain With this premise this product was born. It is an object that guards something much more important: your memories. Before, we had our memories in the form of photographs, newspaper cuttings, and cinema tickets. Now, in a response to the needs that have arisen over time, such as the accessibility and massive storage of information, all those objects and memories form part of a great virtual platform. People have become users and memories are now sequences of ones and zeros that try to transform themselves, through our screen, into a real image of our experiences. Objects have no value now. They are impersonal mass-produced products. The screen creates a barrier between our feelings and our memories that are on the other side, saved in a shared place, the cloud. The solution is simple, let us go beyond the screen and use that unique ability in every human being to perceive reality, the 5 senses, and especially the sense which is most joined to emotions, the sense of smell. Humans remember 35% of what they smell as against 5% of what they see. The brain registers smells as emotions, so aromas, the opposite of photographs, not only make you remember but also make you relive your memories. LABOR Labor emerges from the combination of materialisation processes with the aim of creating objects with a unique identity. These processes include the most traditional techniques, like handicrafts, and the most contemporary, like the 3D print. Each of these techniques has a different interest, but is no less important for all that. Today, the ease with which we can access any type of information and make it ours, is obvious. Labor makes an analogy between this appropriation and the infinite production techniques. They are all equally valid, providing there is balance and respect between the parties. When combining processes the characteristics that differentiate them are kept in mind, from the unique character of a piece produced by a local craftsman to the possible infinite and delocalized print of any 3D file. Every type of artisanal, industrial and digital process can be combined to make objects with a unique character in Labor. AN INVISIBLE MATTER AURORA is an air purifying lamp that addresses indoor air pollution by removing particles, gases and humidity in a natural and low-tech way. Each component in the lamp address one of the problems and the structure is based on a modular system where you can add or remove a purifying component. This allows you to customize the lamp depending on your air quality needs. We spend most of our time indoors, where there is a high level of air pollution that can lead to a broad range of health problems. Stroke, ischemic heart disease and lung cancer are common causes of the yearly 3.8 million premature deaths linked to exposure to air pollutants (WHO, Household air pollution and health, Fact sheet No.292, 2014). Despite this, public awareness of indoor air pollution and its health effects is low. There is a need to raise awareness about this major health problem, together with solutions to address it. The exploration of alternative air cleaning methods has been essential in this project as a response to the high energy consumption of air purifiers that exist today. Creating a higher aesthetic value and a multifunction solution have also been key objectives in order to create a desirable product for various needs, which ultimately addresses the problem of indoor air pollution. NEW FABRIC After observing the consumerist society around us, and focusing on fashion, I wondered what I could do to change this. It is almost impossible to change consumption patterns but we should at least start to talk about it.Buying clothes and accessories without asking where they are made, who made them, what materials were used and what are the consequences of this. This movement is called Fast Fashion. I would like us to start looking at production processes, the quality of materials and finishes. My project is based on transforming textile waste for High Fashion. With these textile waste products I created a fabric using a loom. This fabric can be used in many products, like bags, all kinds of accessories, clothing in general, and even furniture and household items. The idea is to reuse materials, being aware of the production process, to make locally-produced, high quality artisan products. ROEMPI Blessed with great diversity, Indonesia has a lot to be discovered, especially the combination of high quality local materials and great artisan skills. Thus, my project aims to create a contemporary product that still portrays the essential Indonesian tradition, for the user's unique experience of Indonesia. Based on Indonesia's rich diversity, I looked at traditional customs and rituals, one of which is the tea-drinking ritual of Tegal, a small city in Central Java. This ritual works as a way of socializing among local people. Drinking tea has become an activity in which people can relax and share stories with friends and family, despite their social status or rank. Inspired by this ritual, my project is a tea set that portrays the local essence with a contemporary twist. This tea set is handmade by local artisans using local materials, rattan and terracotta. The local twist will be shown through the design itself. 216 217 Backstage IED Madrid Dirección IED Madrid I Head of the IED Madrid Riccardo Marzullo Masters of Design and Innovation 2014 Coordinación Didáctica I Didactic Coordination Claret Pontier Vicedirección IED Madrid I Deputy Director of the IED Madrid José Piquero Didáctica I Didactics Fabio Molinas, Ana Penche Dirección IED Master I Head of IED Master Dario Assante Dirección Científica IED Madrid I IED Madrid Scientific Direction Francisco Jarauta Dirección Académica IED Master I IED Master Academic Direction Hada Martínez Dirección Relaciones y Proyectos Institucionales I Institutional Relations and Projects Management Marisa Santamaría Dirección Área de Sostenibilidad I Head of Sustainability Area Victoria de Pereda Responsable Prensa y Comunicación IED Madrid I Head of Press and Communication IED Madrid Inma Flor Responsable Prensa y Comunicación IED Master I Head of Press and Communication IED Master Laura Holgado Responsable Marketing IED Madrid I Head of Marketing IED Madrid Alessandro Punturo Responsable Marketing IED Master I Head of Marketing IED Master Luca Baldi Responsable de Publicaciones IED Madrid I IED Madrid Publishing Supervisor Pedro Medina Servicio de Información y Orientación I Information and Orientation Service Amelia Pacifico Master of European Design Labs Program Leaders I Program Leaders Katharina Mischer, Thomas Traxler (mischer’traxler studio) Tutores I Tutors Paloma Cañizares, Cutu Mazuelos Master of Communication Design Labs Program Leader I Program Leader Ian Crocombe Tutores I Tutors Ugo Ceria, David Standley Master of Strategic Design Labs Program Leader I Program Leader Juan Pastor Tutores I Tutors Tommaso Canonici, Asier Pérez Master of Product Design Labs Program Leader I Program Leader Clive van Heerden Tutores I Tutors Àlex Jiménez, Frédéric Misik, Belinda Tato AGRADECIMIENTOS I ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS STAFF IED MADRID Silvia Aguado, José Antonio Ávila, Laura Begotti, Lucia Bertini, Yago Bolívar, Alfonso Calderón, Grazia Cammisa, Damjan Damjanovic, Alessandra Di Bartolomeo, Lucía Díez, Daniel Fabia, Eduardo Fabia, Pablo Fernández, Cristina Gálvez, María Grande, Antonio Guzmán, Madalin Illie, María León, Javier Maseda, Juana Muñoz, Miguel Olivera, Raúl Ortega, Ricardo Párraga, Luis Francisco Pérez, Xavi Ramírez, Mikel Sáenz de Santa María, Layla Serra, Tamara Suárez, Julio Ocaña, Laura Pedroso, Sonia Úbeda, Aitor Uribarri, Inés Wayar, Yolanda Wayar.
