FROM THE OGLE OFFICE DE EL PASTOR Dear Friends: During the coming week we celebrate our country’s Independence Day, a time to thank God for the blessings of freedom we enjoy here. There is no doubt our country has its problems economically, socially and even spiritually, yet it remains a magnet of opportunity and stability for the rest of the world. At a time when many countries in the world are going through civil war, public turmoil and degrading social conditions, somehow Americans find a way to maintain both freedom and justice in the face of tremendous challenges. There are probably many historical, scientific and even geographic reasons for this, but in the end we must remember to thank God for allowing us to live in this great country. Join us for our nine o’clock Mass on July Fourth and thank God for the gift that is the U.S.A. And please remember to pray for the religious freedom of our country during the fourth annual "Fortnight for Freedom” (June 21-July 4), to defend religious freedom in our country. Learn more at fortnight4freedom.org. This week we also welcome back Father Peter John Nwadimkpa, our summer help priest, for his fifth summer with us, allowing the parish priests to take some much-needed vacation time. “Father PJ” is completing his doctoral thesis in education in Rome, where he will return in late September. Until then he will be helping us with our Masses in English, Spanish and Italian, and a few tennis matches if any parishioner out there would like to take on this past national Nigerian tennis champ! Progress continues on our upper church restoration. As previously noted, we found some unwelcome surprises with the plaster and the floors that had to be remedied. Plastering of the side walls is now welladvanced. The old wooden floors have been removed, the sleepers reinforced where needed, and a plywood surface laid down that will provide a solid basis for the sound-proofing and porcelain-tiles yet to come. The ceilings have been largely primed, the angels’ wings are being touched up and other classic ceiling decorations being re-created. Delivery of the new upstairs pews is anticipated for the beginning of September. Keep those prayers coming for a successful and surprise-free completion of this great work. Finally, registration for fall classes in Religious Education (“CDD”) is now on-going until August 31. Remind your neighbors if they have school-aged children to fulfill this important parental obligation. God love you, Msgr. Obtain for me, I pray you, lively faith, firm hope, and burning love; complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, attention in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God and perseverance in the grace of God even unto death; that so, by means of your intercession and your glorious merits, I may be able to overcome the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil, and may be made worthy to appear before the chief and eternal Shepherd of souls, Jesus Christ, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth for endless ages, to enjoy His presence and love Him forever. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. V. Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth. R. They shall be mindful of Thy name, O Lord. Let us pray: O God, Whose right hand raised up blessed Peter, when he walked upon the water and began to sink, and thrice delivered his fellow-Apostle Paul from the depths of the sea, when he suffered shipwreck: graciously hear us and grant, by the merits of them both, that we also may attain unto everlasting glory: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen (An Indulgence of 500 days.) Prayer to Sts. Peter and Paul for the Holy Catholic Church Defend, O Lord, thy servants, we beseech thee, from all dangers both of body and soul; and, by the intercession of the blessed and glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy saints, mercifully grant us the blessings of peace and safety ; that all adversities and errors being removed, thy Church may freely and securely serve thee; through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Prayer to St. Paul Thou art the Vessel of election, Saint Paul the Apostle, the Preacher of truth in the whole world. V. Pray for us, Saint Paul the Apostle, R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, Who, of Thy divine mercy, didst instruct Thy blessed Apostle Paul what he should do that he might be filled with the Holy Ghost; by his admonitions directing us and his merits interceding for us, grant that we may serve Thee in fear and trembling and so be filled with the comfort of Thy heavenly gifts. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. (An Indulgence of 500 days) Invocations Defend, O Lord, Thy people: and as they put their trust in the patronage of Thy holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, keep them ever by Thy protection. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). (An Indulgence of 300 days) Submitted by Neida Martinez Share your favorite prayers: [email protected] A Statement from Timothy Cardinal Dolan And the Bishops of New York State Calling on Governor Cuomo and Leaders in Albany: Don’t Let Us Down More than 200 Catholic schools have closed in the last 15 years throughout New York State, as families and parishes, who strongly believe in the value of Catholic education, struggle to keep up with increasing costs. Many of our public schools also desperately need help. To address these needs, the New York State Catholic Bishops joined a broad coalition of faith groups, community organizations and labor unions backing legislation called the Education Investment Tax Credit. The measure would encourage increased charitable donations to generate more private scholarships as well as additional resources to public schools. It also helps all teachers provide needed materials and supplies for every classroom in New York. The vast majority of legislators support the bill. Why? It’s because the legislation will help all children, regardless of where they go to school. It’s a win– win for all families! Although Governor Cuomo assured us he would fight to include the proposal in the state budget, in the end, we were left out. As the legislative session ends in Albany this coming week, we pray that Governor Cuomo wont let us down. We ask that you join us in that prayer. Pray that Governor Cuomo will put children ahead of politics and fight for the Education Investment Tax Credit. We also ask that you contact him immediately with that same message. You can send a message to the Governor through the website of the New York State Catholic Conference: www.nyscatholic.org. Time is short. Please act today. God Bless you. BROOKLYN DIOCESAN MARIAN PILGRIMAGE – WASHINGTON, DC – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2014 This coming October 25th, the last Saturday of the month, we’ll be going to THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. This Pilgrimage is a tribute to Mary which we, as a Diocese, make every other year. This is not meant to be a tour, but rather a spiritual journey to honor our Blessed Mother and pray for the needs of our country, our diocese and our parish family. Since this will be a one-day trip, we’re aiming to make the journey with one 15 minute stop each way. The estimated time for the trip, with a short stop will be approximately 5 hours and we plan on leaving by 6:00AM so we can arrive at the Shrine by 11:00AM. Our plans include being greeted by our Bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio, a multi-lingual Rosary service at 12 Noon, an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Confession, and a Concelebrated Mass at 3:00PM. The Liturgy should conclude at 5:00PM. Departure for the trip home will begin immediately. A one-day trip like this can be exhausting, but please keep in mind that this is a spiritual Pilgrimage to our Lady and the inconvenience of the trip itself is part of the sacrifice. This Pilgrimage is open to the entire Parish and not limited in any way, with the exception of unaccompanied children. We are planning to have 2 buses each with 54 people leaving from right here in front of our church. If we don’t have enough people to fill a bus, we will have to go with another parish. The en- tire cost is $60 per person and this will include water, snacks, tip for the bus driver and donation made to the Basilica. Payment can be made by check written to “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” or cash and you will be given a receipt The Shrine does have a cafeteria with modest prices, however, the facilities are limited to 288 people at one time, and there could be long waits… you could be disappointed or become frustrated. It’s recommended that each of us bring our lunches as well as non-perishable items such as juice boxes or fruit. Please remember that the Bishop’s hope and aim is that this be a spiritual Pilgrimage with our Blessed Mother as the focal point of the entire day. Thank you for your attention and God Bless you and your family. ________________________________________________________ NAME PHONE FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY AT 718-278-1834 OR SEND NEIDA MARTINEZ AN EMAIL: [email protected] PLEASE DETACH AND DROP OFF AT THE RECTORY OR GIVE TO AN USHER. ___________________________________________________________ NAME PHONE PARA OBTENER MÁS INFORMACIÓN, POR FAVOR LLAME A LA RECTORÍA AL 718-278-1834 O CONTACTE A NEIDA MARTINEZ AL CORREO ELECTRÓNICO: [email protected] POR FAVOR RECORTE LA PARTE CON SU INFORMACION Y DEJELO EN LA RECTORÍA O DAR A UN UJIER.
