Vision Statement
“We, the people of St. Mary’s, envision a Christ centered ,
welcoming community enriched by the gifts
of a diverse heritage.
We remember our past and are open to our future:
living and sharing the Gospel with enthusiasm, joy and
celebration under the guidance and protection
of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.”
Recordamos nuestro pasado y estamos abiertos a nuestro
Perpetuo Socorro".
This week is prayer for Christian Unity. This year’s theme “Give Me a Drink” comes from the Gospel “The Woman at the Well”. Diversity was never a hindrance for Jesus. Though it looked like
Jesus broke customs, His radical actions closed gaps and built bridges.
Jesus invites us to do as He did. In Christianity, where there are different traditions, we are called
to respect and treat each other the way Jesus does. Though we are different, we call and worship
the same God. Thus Jesus brings all of us together to the same Father.
o0o
This week, we are also called to pray to end abortion and promote culture of life. In the anniversary of the decision in the
case Roe vs. Wade, many unborn children were not given the chance to live. The pro-choice stance have misled many
men and women. Let our prayers place hope in this part of the world and help protect the life of the unborn and guide
those who are misguided.
o0o
Let us talk about Jesus’ growing ministry. In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus called His first disciples. He called them directly from their busy-ness. The disciples did not have second thoughts. They left their work and followed Jesus.
We do not want to be disturbed when we are busy. It is disrespect of our time when something else obliges. What can
possibly take us away from our packed calendar? God? Sports? Well-deserved vacation?
God is surely giving us the challenge: Can we leave behind everything for the sake of the Kingdom of God?
o0o
As we kick-off our 130 years of foundation, let us strengthen our faith family today for the sake of the future. This February 7, we are raising fund for the future of our family. This year’s auction Un Futuro Glorioso will help the formation of our
children and youth. Please be willing to create that bright and good future for our parish family by supporting the children
and youth of our parish.
nuestra parroquia.

Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal 2015
Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal
will receive a mailing from Archbishop Sample within the next
few days. Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan
offices and agencies that assist the parishes and their people.
In addition, part of the funds are used to assist retired archdiocesan priests and seminarian education. The theme of the
2015 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is “Teach, Bless, Serve.”
As you consider the amount you can pledge to help these
ministries, please reflect on the following:
Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is one concrete way to “Teach, Bless, Serve.” Take a moment to honestly examine all the God-given blessings in your life and then
ask not yourself, but ask God: “What is just?” By our baptism
and our confirmation in the Catholic Church, each of us is
called to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called not only to
follow Christ but to be Christ.
Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the
above reflections, and please give generously according to
the blessings God has given you.
Estamos llamados no sólo a seguir a

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Saint John Bosco, Priest, Salesian founder, Italy (18151888) - January 31 "Do you want the Lord to give you
many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you
few graces? Visit Him rarely. Do you want the devil to attack
you? Visit Jesus rarely in the Blessed Sacrament. Do you
want him to flee from you? Visit Jesus often. Do you want to
conquer the devil? Take refuge often at the feet of Jesus. Do you want to be conquered by the devil? Forget
about visiting Jesus. My dear ones, the visit to the Blessed
Sacrament is an extremely necessary way to conquer the
devil. Therefore, go often to visit Jesus and the devil will not
come out victorious against you." (St John Bosco)
Please join us in the chapel for Eucharistic Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament this Friday following the 8:30 mass and

From the Archdiocese: The Archdiocese has just learned
that the IRS is delayed in issuing IP-PINs. Thus, you may not
receive an IP-PIN during this tax season, even though you
had a background check performed in connection with service
for the Archdiocese, a parish or school. The IRS will continue
to issue IP-PINs on a rolling basis. If you have received an IPPIN, you must use it to file your taxes. If you have not received an IP-PIN, IRS advises that the best way to protect
yourself is to file your taxes early. IRS apologizes for the delays and the confusion it has caused.
The FAQs posted in the Archdiocese’s website are being revised accordingly and will be updated on Tuesday, January
20, 2015. If you have questions, please contact the IRS Identity Protection Special Unit at 1-800-908-4490
or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Please do not contact
the Archdiocese or your parish or school. Neither the Archdiocese nor your parish or school has any further information on
the issuance of IP-PINs.

Early Data Suggests Severe Flu Season
Based on early data, the 2014-2015 flu season could be severe. This
season’s flu vaccine may be less effective at protecting you against the
flu. People who get the vaccine, however, are still protected against two
common flu strains and may experience milder symptoms if they get the
mutated strain. It is not too late to get the vaccine!
Is it a Cold or the Flu?
The flu and the common cold have similar
symptoms. It can be difficult to tell the
difference between them. Symptoms such as
fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough are
more common and intense with the flu.
People with colds are more likely to have a
runny or stuffy nose.
Your health care provider can give you a test
within the first few days of your illness to
determine whether or not you have the flu.
Can the flu be treated?
Yes. There are prescription medications called
“antiviral drugs” that can be used to treat
influenza illness. When used for treatment,
antiviral drugs can lessen symptoms and
shorten the time you are sick by 1 or 2 days.
They also can prevent serious flu
complications, like pneumonia. Studies show
that it is best to start taking them within the
first two days of illness.
Flu Symptoms include:







A 100oF or higher fever or
feeling feverish (not everyone
with the flu has a fever)
A cough and/or sore throat
A runny or stuffy nose
Headaches and/or body aches
Chills
Fatigue
Nausea/vomiting (usually in
children)
Resource website http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm
for St. Mary’s church bulletin 1/14/15
The Flu Is Contagious
Symptoms start 1 to 4 days after the virus
enters the body. Most healthy adults may be
able to infect other people beginning 1 day
before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7
days after becoming sick. That means that
you may be able to pass on the flu to
someone else before you know you are sick,
as well as while you are sick.
People with flu can spread it to others up to
about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu
viruses are spread mainly by droplets made
when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.
These droplets can land in the mouths or
noses of people who are nearby or possibly be
inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person
might also get flu by touching a surface or
object that has flu virus on it and then
touching their own mouth or nose.
To avoid this, people should stay away from
sick people and stay home if sick. It also is
important to wash hands often with soap and
water. If soap and water are not available, use
an alcohol-based hand rub. Linens, eating
utensils, and dishes belonging to those who
are sick should not be shared without washing
thoroughly first. Eating utensils can be
washed either in a dishwasher or by hand with
water and soap and do not need to be cleaned
separately.
