Ben SPIRITUAL LIFE AND THE LENTEN SEASON (LENT AND THE POWER OF THE ANGELS) Beloved brothers and sisters, the Lenten season offers us an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our dear Jesus who accepted suffering and death so that you and I can have life in abundance (John 10:10). Let us reflect this Sunday, on the role the angels played in the life of Jesus as he faced temptations and how our guardian angels can assist us in our war against sin and the devil. During the temptation of Jesus, St. Matthew says, “when the tempter left him, the angels of God ministered to him”. (Mt. 4:11). Hence, the presence of the angels was part of Jesus’ desert experience, which was of immense help to Him. In fact, Mark says that the angels were waiting on him all through the desert experience (Mk. 1:13). Lent therefore, being a Christian re-experiencing of Jesus’ life, brings to us anew, the reality of the angels and their role in the spiritual life. Who are the angels? As our Catechism says, “they are servants and messengers of God who as Jesus told us in Mt. 18:10 behold the face of God. They hearken to the voice of God always”.[1] They help us to live well our Christian lives. According to St. Augustine, “angel is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is ‘spirit’; if you seek the name of their office, it is “angel”. Our Scriptures are permeated with the stories of their help both in the Old and New Testament. While in the Old Testament, they brought messages to the patriarchs of Israel, led the People of God to the Promised Land, in the New Testament, they helped the apostles like Peter out of prison and so forth. (Ex. 23:20, Acts. 12:211, 13-17 etc]. According to the Council of Trent, “God gives each one of us an angel. He does this so that, strengthened by his power and help, we may be freed from the snares cunningly set by our enemies, and may repel the terrible assaults that they make on us” St. John of the Cross expressed the truth still writing, “the angels as well as taking our thoughts up to God, bring God’s help to our souls, watching over them like good shepherds, communicating sweet messages and divine inspirations. They defend us against those wolves which are the devils.” If the above roles are being played by the angels in our lives, why then do we not implore their help often? Why do we not entrust ourselves to their protection? As St. Matthew tells us, “they are going to be Christ companions at His return for the Universal Judgment (Mt.25:31). If one is then to ask, what will the angels be doing then? St. John Chrysostom provides an answer that “our guardian angels will gather together at the universal judgment in order to bear witness themselves to the ministry that they exercised through God’s command for the salvation of each one of us. In our Lenten journey, let us remember that the angels came to the assistance of our Blessed Lord when he was in the garden of Gethsemane to comfort him in his sorrows (Luke 22:43), may we invite the angels to help us carry our crosses, may they help to remove the stone from the different tombs (Mark 16: 4-6) where the evil one wishes to drown our every effort to experience the joy of the resurrection. Let us fall in love once again with our guardian angels, let us ask for their most powerful intercession, may we enjoy their companies as we strive most earnestly to do the will of our heavenly Father. Wishing us all the best of blessings this Lent and always!!! Fr. We appreciate your ongoing March 6, 2016 Plenary Indulgence Pope Francis offers the opportunity to be closer to God on this Year of Mercy. He wants us all to work for our holiness, but this entails opening our heart to others, especially to the most poor and abandoned. As a special motivation to encourage us, we are given a gift that the Church has, itis called Plenary Indulgence. We can explain that the Plenary Indulgence is a more complete for giveness, as it provides purification that is necessary to come before God. The Catechism says: "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints" (1471). The way to gain a plenary indulgence is both very simple and very difficult at the same time; here you have the external conditions: 1. Go through the door of the Year of Mercy, which will be installed in a Church per Vicariate. This is a pilgrimage to the temple with the intention of starting a true conversion. 2. Go to Confession with this same intention. 3. Receive Holy Communion with the desire to practice the mercy that Jesus taught us. 4. Recite the Creed, or prayer expressed as the faith of the Church. 5. Pray for the Holy Father and his intentions. The Pope also states that you can obtain the Plenary Indulgence when you practice the Works of Mercy, because this way we become like Christ. The hardest condition to gain the plenary indulgence is letting go of all attachments to sin. Be free for God, loving our brothers and sisters. That is why gaining the indulgence is painful; it is sacrifice because it means breaking with all that separates us from God. The purpose of the Holy Year is that we work every day so that our desires are God's desires, or so that in our lives we are truly capable of doing God's will, loving our brothers and sisters. The Pope explains that the sick who cannot make this pilgrimage may obtain the grace of the Holy Year, living this difficult year with joy, receiving the Eucharist, and attending Mass albeit electronically (Internet, TV, Radio). The Pope has also thought of the imprisoned and invites them to join this effort of purification participating through personal prayer thinking about their own conversion when they cross the door of their cell. Dame profunda gratitud y correspondencia a tu misericordia.
