Most of us do not even know who they were. And our great-great-great-great-grandchildren won’t know who we were, either. As soon as we’re gone, the world forgets us. So why are we so concerned about what the world thinks of us? Our lives are only a moment with eternity before us. Why doesn’t humility come as naturally to us as the sin of pride? We’re all infected with pride. True Christian humility is sometimes difficult to see for us. And so it might help to consider its counterpart, pride. Humility is contrary to the world’s values, which are wealth, power, dignity, having fine things, the admiration of others, etc. The spirit of the world turns our eyes to these things. Many are afraid of pursuing of these things, lest the world think we’re foolish. The virtue of humility must be taught. As Christians we are to live in worldly ways, but according to God’s design. We must lose that sense of pride. Just as physical laws govern our material world, there are laws that operate in the spiritual realm. Gravity is a law of nature. Here is a heavenly law: those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves be exalted. If we humble ourselves, we will receive a great reward. God will exalt us -- an honor far greater than we ourselves or the world could ever bestow upon us. Now humility doesn’t mean having a worse opinion of ourselves than we deserve. Virtue is founded in truth, so humility is found accepting the truth about ourselves. Before God we are hopelessly weak, miserable and sinful people. Whoever confesses this condition, lives in humility. We often compare ourselves to others. To be humble, we need only reflect for a moment on how we compare with God. We are totally dependent upon God for everything. We’re only here today still because God has granted us yet another day. We have no more power in ourselves to speak a word than we feel ourselves able to raise the dead. That is the weakness of our condition. God has given us all that we have. We cannot do anything of ourselves. Pride over what we are or can do, and to glorify ourselves makes us thieves and liars. We give to ourselves what rightly belongs to God and we deny the truth about our weakness and sin. We are miserably broken people, a fallen race, with death breathing down our necks always. After we’re gone, the world forgets us. We seem to care a lot about what the world thinks of us. But who among us would want published and proclaimed for the whole world what we know of ourselves: all the skeletons in our closets. The horrible nature of sin can be seen in the Incarnation and Atonement for Jesus to cleanse us from guilt. Had Christ not done that, we would be forever separated from God. Knowing this, how can we be prideful? Humility is grounded in truth. When we reflect upon these truths, we begin to humble ourselves. Jesus Christ reveals the truth about the Father. If Jesus were not who He says He is, then His teachings would be no better than the musings of any philosopher We recognize pride in others, and it bolsters and fortifies our own egos when we tell ourselves how we detest pride . . . in other people. But the more prideful we are, the more impatient we are with pride in others. And the less humility a man has in his own mind, the more he will demand and be delighted with it in other people. To humble ourselves we must constantly recognize the fact and take for granted that we are steeped in pride. We ought always to remember that pride is our greatest weakness. It tempts us to steal the honor and glory that rightly belong to God and to deny the truth about ourselves. We can have no greater sign of a more confirmed pride than when we think we are humble enough. Amen Blessings! In Jesus Fr. David TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Conduct your affairs with humility and God will favor you (Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 2829). Psalm — God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor (Psalm 68). Second Reading — You have approached Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 12:1819, 22-24a). Y nuestros tatara-tatara-buelos no saben quiénes éramos, tampoco. ¡Bendiciones! En Jesús Padre David LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Maneja tus asuntos con humildad. Humíllate y tendrás el favor de Dios (Sirácide 3:17-18, 20, 28-29). VINNIE’S ON BROADWAY NOTES FROM THE HEART The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need that we assist. Oh What a Day! Vinnie’s on Broadway Thrift Store celebrated its 15th anniversary Monday, August 15, 2016. The day started with rain and the new roof leaking. Then the fun began! One day only, all clothing in the store was 25¢. We sold about 3000 items. And the store was still full of clothes! We had some interesting customers on the 15th. Six formal gowns went to a high school producing a play. One customer bought 240 items to send to multiple family members in nursing homes. An employee of another thrift store came in 3 times that day collecting clothing to send to her family in Asia. A parent and four children started the day for back to school shopping by coming to us. $25 later, they left for home supplied! Two new volunteers were inspired to spend hours with us and many people shopped with us for the first time. The thrift store has supplied many Blessings to the volunteers and community in the past and looking ahead, into the future. We have no plans, dreams, or spiritual nudges to relocate our facility. We have a tree on the property that is at least 250 years old. Can't replace that. Next year's maintenance project is replacing the store's 15-year-old carpet (it's gross) and maybe floor and ceiling tile. Cruising Junction Hwy, you may notice a man pushing a wheel chair with his wife slumped in it. They are homeless, carless, and yes, we are helping them. St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank you for your contributions which amounted to $3,408.00. THANK YOU! BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door, currently featuring books for your continuing education. Richard Cort tells us about one of them: The Seven Deadly Sins: Jewish, Christian, and Classical Reflections on Human Nature, by Solomon Schimmel. It is not easy to make sense of the modern world. Lately, I have had more and more conversations with people who have used phrases like “How do you make sense of all this, when people are acting so irrationally?” Well, Solomon Schimmel has the answer, in this book which was actually written in the 1990s, and withstands the test of time in a wonderful way. Schimmel, who is a psychologist, and was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge, and a National Science Research Fellow at Harvard, looks at the history of mankind through the eyes of “which sins” were the most prevalent at any given time, and he gives us some remarkable insights into modern times. Here are some comments from the flyleaf of the book: “Most people think of sin as an outmoded idea – part of an obsolescent, ‘medieval’ frame of reference. But Solomon Schimmel maintains that ‘the seven deadly sins’ are alive and well and deadlier than ever. Greed, envy, lust, pride, anger, sloth, and gluttony are a permanent part of human nature, and they cause as much unhappiness – both psychological and social – today as at any time in history. Yet the waning of the great religious traditions in the modern world has left us with nothing but secular psychology to guide us in the perennial struggle with our flawed and ‘fallen’ nature. And psychology appears to be inadequate to this task. ... All these problems, Schimmel argues, can be better understood – and therapeutically addressed – within the context of traditional religious and moral teachings about sin (or vice) and virtue. While the great traditions differ with respect to their conception of human origin and destiny, all agree that we can realize happiness only by exercising selfcontrol, or virtue.” Knights of Columbus Father Kemper Council 6409 The Knights of Columbus would like to extend an invitation to all the men & their wives of our parish to join us for dinner on October 22nd from 6:00pm until 8:00 at the Monsignor Walsh Hall located at 115 Doris Drive. We would like to take this opportunity to explain to everyone what we are all about. A strong support of our young (& old) Catholic gentlemen would be appreciated. There will be no pressure to join, just a lot of information on what we do for our Catholic & area community. We will serve smoked chicken, green beans, roasted potatoes, tea & coffee. We pray that you will come to this calling with open hearts. May God Bless and open your hearts to serve. Please RSVP to Steve Erickson @ 830-329-5587 so we can get an estimate of the number of people to prepare for. We ask that you help us in the following ways: 1) Pray for a successful weekend – A community filled with faith, enthusiasm, community, fun and fundraising – and of course good weather! 2) PICK UP your packet! You will find your festival packet in the Narthex with your name on it. Please pick up your packet and read the enclosed letter. The early bird drawing this year will be on September 7th with the prize again being $200 of lottery scratch off tickets. You should return your check for the raffle tickets and meal tickets in the envelope provided in your packet, PLEASE stick an address label or write your address on EACH of your raffle tickets AND on the return envelope – this will ensure that you are credited for your tickets. If everyone picks up their envelope, we will not have to use precious resources in mailing them out! We are anxious to see who will be the big scratch off winner, so return your envelope FAST. If you cannot find your name, there are extra packets in the church and school office. They will also be able to help you if you want extra tickets and raffle tickets available. 3) Start Baking your cakes and cookies. It is suggested that each parish family provide 2 cakes and 2 dozen cookies, but more is always welcomed! The Cake Wheel is extremely popular and is a WIN-WIN for everyone. 4) We are looking forward to this year's festival and we are looking for exciting new silent and live auction items.
