Éxito
Gracias a los esfuerzos de José Giovanni Ojeda,
Director de la Oficina del Coordinador General, para
el Financiamiento Socio-Económico y Autogestión,
y el Honorable Gobernador de Puerto Rico, Luis
Fortuño, el W Retreat & Spa, y muchos voluntarios,
auspiciadores y participantes del memorable
evento de “Taste of the Island” del año pasado, una
nueva sede para Alcanzando el Éxito fue finalmente adquirida y habilitada.
En el edificio al lado de Sol Creations en Isabel
II, se ha trabajado para crear un ambiente de arte,
donde los niños puedan asistir a un lugar seguro
después del horario de clases para estudiar,
trabajar y jugar. El Gobernador planifica venir a la
apertura, y todo Vieques está invitado.
Por los últimos cinco años, RFS ha provisto a
65 estudiantes con becas para continuar estudios
universitarios y realizar sus sueños. Ahora,
tenemos sesenta y cinco nuevos estudiantes,
miembros de Alcanzando el Éxito. Esto es un
nuevo récord, y, para el moment en que usted lea
este artículo, se estarán reuniendo varias veces
a la semana para mejorar su inglés, destrezas en
computadoras, y desarrollar nuevas destrezas e
intereses.
Mientras se prepara el nuevo local, Eric Schmell,
piloto de VAL, ha estado ofreciendo su tiempo
voluntario y compartiendo su pasión por la energía
alternativa. Ha diseñado una competencia en
la cual cinco grupos de estudiantes estarán
ofreciendo una presentación en “power point.” Los
cinco equipos estudiarán la energía del viento,
energía solar, energía geotermal, bio-combustible
e hidrógeno y presentarán sus proyectos ante un
jurado. El grupo que haga la mejor presentación
recibirá un premio.
Sandra Reyes, artista local, ha ofrecido trabajar
con un equipo de estudiantes para crear un rótulo
para el nuevo edificio. Wynne Curry está ofreciendo un empleo en Bananas para un estudiante
puntual y dispuesto a practicar inglés, mientras
recibe paga por su trabajo. RFS está buscando voluntarios interesados en dar clases de horticultura
o mantenimiento de plantas y crear un jardín en el
patio de atrás.
Otro proyecto que necesita mencionarse es el
increíble talento colectivo que fue demostrado en
diciembre en la fiesta de amigos y familiares de
RFS. Tres obras cortas fueron escritas y producidas por los estudiantes y presentadas a una
entusiasmada audiencia.
Este verano, bajo la dirección de un director de
Nueva York, RFS planifica ofrecer durante el mes de
julio, 2 semanas de un taller de drama. Del 19-20
de julio, otros talleres serán ofrecidos, los cuales
se llevarán a cabo por profesionales de varios

Finalmente, con el propósito de seguir ofreciendo estos servicios y llenar el gran vacío que tienen

are happening at Reach
for Success!
Thanks to the efforts of Jose Giovanni Ojeda,
Director of the Office of the General Coordinator for
Socio-Economic Financing and Self Management,
and the Honorable Governor of Puerto Rico, Luis
Fortuño, the W Retreat & Spa, and to the many
volunteers, sponsors and participants of last
year’s memorable Taste of the Island, a new home
for Reach for Success has finally been procured
and developed.
In the building next to Sol Creations in Isabel
II, work has been done to create a state of the art
environment where kids can come after school
to be safe to study, work and play. The Governor
is planning to come for the opening, and all of
Vieques will be invited!
For the last five years, RFS has provided 65 deserving students with scholarships to pursue their
education and realize their dreams. Now, there are
sixty five new students who are members of Reach
for Success. This is a new record, and by the time
you read this, they will be able to meet several
times a week to improve their English and computer skills and develop new skills and interests.
While the new space is being prepared, Eric
Schmell, a pilot for VAL, has been volunteering his
time and sharing his passion for alternative energy. He has designed a competition in which five
groups of students will give a power point presentation. The five teams will study wind power, solar
power, geothermal energy, bio-fuel, and hydrogen
and present their projects to a jury. The group with
the best presentation will receive a prize.
Sandra Reyes, a local multi-media artist, has
also offered to work with a team of students to create a new sign for the new building. Wynne Curry is
offering a job at Bananas to any eager student who
can get to work on time and is willing to practice
speaking English while being paid to work! RFS
is also seeking volunteers interested in teaching
horticulture or plant maintenance and creating a
garden in the backyard.
Another project which merits mention is the
incredible collective talent which was displayed in
December at a party for friends and family of RFS.
Three short plays were written and produced by
the students to an enthusiastic crowd.
This summer, under the guidance of a New York
director, RFS plans to offer a 2 week drama workshop in July. From July 9th -20th, other workshops
will be offered which will be run by professionals in
various fields. Anyone who is interested in sharing
their talents or interests should contact Carmen
Portela Wier as soon as possible.
Finally, in order to continue to provide such
services and fill the great void of activities for the
kids in Vieques, RFS is starting it’s annual scholarship drive. This year 13 students will be needing
help to continue their education. If you would like to
make a difference in the lives of our youth, please
donate to the scholarship fund. Checks can be

COREFI Celebrates
COREFI celebrated the holidays with a party at
the residence of Ana Sonia Ventura, President,
COREFI. Those present included were clients of
COREFI (handicapped), elderly, and the impoverished and family members. The activities of the
evening included live music, Christmas dinner,
refreshments, and gifts. COREFI would like to
thank all of the volunteers who helped make this

COREFI celebró las navidades con una fiesta en
el hogar de Ana Sonia Ventura, Presidenta de
COREFI. Entre los presentes estaban los clientes
de COREFI (incapacitados), envejecientes, menos
afortunados y sus familiares. Las actividades
incluyeron música en vivo, Cena de Navidad,
refrigerios y regalos. COREFI agradece a todos

Acontecimientos del
“Navy League”
Recientemente, se llevó a cabo un concurso
entre los niños de las escuelas de VQS para
diseñar un logo para el evento anual del “Pig Roast”
del “Navy League”. Grandes artistas surgieron y
lo mejor de lo mejor fue premiado. Eva Shelton de
seis años se llevó el 3er premio, Angie Marie Rodríguez, doce años, se llevó el segundo, y Mitzie A.
Rosa, catorce, el primer premio. El evento anual se
llevará a cabo en el Sunbay el sábado, 10 de marzo,
durante el mediodía. Reserva la fecha.
El “Navy Legue” estuvo bien ocupado durante
las navidades. Acción de Gracias y las Navidades
llegaron temprano, afortunadamente para varias
familias viequenses al final del 2011. Miembros de
la Guardia Costera y del Navy League sirvieron un
banquete de acción de gracias a más de mil estudiantes de las escuelas de Vieques, garantizando
algunas barriguitas llenas para Acción de Gracias.
El jueves, 22 de diciembre, Santa y miembros de la
Guardia Costera y del Navy League se unieron para
difundir las buenas nuevas a través de la isla. Dirigidos por el increíble Coastie, Frank Sánchez (E-6
BMI) de San Juan, el esfuerzo para llevar alegría
a Vieques fue todo un éxito. Ancianos, niños,
infantes y sus padres recibieron la visita de una
caravana de más de una docena de vehículos que
fueron barrio por barrio con nuestro propio Santa
(J. Gastineau) con el ho ho ho a su manera, entró
en los corazones y hogares de todos.
Frank Sánchez y la Guardia Costera organizaron
la recolección de regalos, papel para envolver,
comida y golosinas, y con los ayudantes de Santa,
Luke Guizlo, SN, Rubén Matos, MK3, Josh Owens,
BM3, entre otros, los regalos fueron envueltos y
se organizó la comida. La alegría del día y de la
época se hizo realidad cuando el trineo de cuatro
ruedas de Santa – halado literalmente por un barco
– lleno de renos voluntarios, dejó a muchos niños
con el corazón contento y el estómago lleno. Dios
bendiga a todos. n

The Oasis Viequense Educational Center thanks Vieques
Paddleboarding for a great physical and educational experience. We were treated to an excursion to Puerto Ferro Bay, the mangroves and enjoyable physical exercise.
Each one of the sixteen students who visited the Bay not
only had an in depth exposure to this Island treasure but
also experienced a new way of learning history, biology
and ecotourism while doing StandUp Paddleboarding. In
addition to the newly learned dexterity the elation and
relaxation were exhilarating in this best of classroom

El centro educativo viequense conocido como Oasis agradece a Vieques
Paddleboarding por la oportunidad
de proveernos una gran experiencia
física y educativa. Nos invitaron a
una excursión a la Bahía Puerto Ferro,
los manglares y a ejercitarnos de
manera divertida. Cada uno de los
16 niños que visitaron la Bahía no solo conocieron los
tesoros de la isla, sino que experimentaron otra manera
de aprender historia, biología, y ecoturismo, mientras
practicaban el deporte del paddleboarding. Además de
la destreza recién aprendida, la euforia y la relajación
fueron estimulantes en el mejor de los escenarios para
un salón de clases. Esperamos repetir esta experiencia.

place at Sun Bay on Saturday, March 10th at
noon. Mark the date!
The Navy League was also busy over the
holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas came
early, and perhaps fortunately, to several
Viequense families at the end of 2011. The
Coast Guard and Navy League members
served a turkey feast for over a thousand kids
at the local VQS schools, guaranteeing some
full bellies for Thanksgiving. And on Thursday,
December 22nd, Santa, the Coast Guard and
numerous Navy League members joined to
spread good tidings across the island. Led
by the amazing Coastie, Frank Sanchez (E-6,
BMI) out of Sector San Juan, the effort to
bring good cheer to Vieques was a success.
Old folks, children, babies and parents were
visited as a caravan of over a dozen vehicles
snaked its way from barrio to barrio with our
own Santa (J.Gastineau) ho ho ho-ing his way
into the hearts and homes of all.
Frank Sanchez and the Coast Guard orchestrated the procurement of gifts, wrapping
paper, food and goodies, and with Santahelpers like Luke Guizlo, SN, Ruben Matos,
MK3, Josh Owens, BM3 and numerous others,
the gifts were wrapped and the food was
organized. The joy of
the day and the season
became a reality when
Santa’s four-wheel sleighcaravan, pulled by a
literal boat-load of volunteer reindeer, left many a
child with a happy heart

La 6ta edición del Día de San Valentín de Vieques
Baila será el martes, 14 de febrero de 5pm a 10pm
en el Coliseo Municipal en Isabel II. Gratis para
TODOS, fomentando el disfrute del baile como parte
de sus vidas. Se ofrecerán clases de merengue y
salsa. Habrá demostración y concurso de baile.

“Vieques Baila 6-2012” abrirá con música de
DJ Danny, seguido por William Morales – Alma Viequense Pitirre de Puerto Real y la banda de acero

Yolanda, artista, coreógrafa y maestra. Se llevarán

The 6th Annual Valentine’s Day Baila on Tuesday,
February 14th from 5pm to 10pm is in the Coliseo
Municipal in Isabel Segunda II. Free to ALL, it will
encourage everyone to enjoy dancing as part of
their lives. Lessons will be given in merengue and
salsa. There will be dance demonstrations and
contests. A “Taste of Vieques”, buffet of traditional
food will be available for $10 per person, as well as
a wide selection of special desserts.
“Vieques Baila 6 -2012” will open with music by
DJ Danny followed by the William Morales – Alma
Viequense Pitirre de Puerto Real and Will Colon’s
youth steel band, The Islanders. The evening’s entertainment will be highlighted by Yvette Yolanda,
performing artist and choreographer and teacher.
Contests will be held with prizes to be awarded for
best female, male, and couples dancers. There will
be a raffle and a silent auction. Flowers, T-shirts,
and other gift items will be available for sale.
The beneficiaries of the event will be the young

Visite la nueva Galería de Siddhia Hutchinson en Isabel Segunda y reconocerá muchos lugares familiares de la isla. El pez del arrecife de coral, las
aves, las heliconias y los cocos son inanimados signos de la vida de la isla:
el bote, el faro, Bar Plaza. No es de extrañar que Vieques haya dado lugar a
artistas talentosos, con su espectacular iluminación y vibrantes colores.
Sin lugar a dudas, uno de los habitantes más coloridos de nuestra isla es
su artista residente, Siddhia Hutchinson. Cuando le preguntamos cómo ella
selecciona sus temas, su respuesta pone de manifiesto su fuerte conexión
orgánica a la isla y sus tesoros. Ella es “impactada” por la belleza de una
vista tropical o quiere “agarrar” un momento para recrearlo en un lienzo,

Take a walk through the new Siddhia Hutchinson Gallery in Isabel Segunda
and you’ll see many familiar island sights. The coral reef fish, wading birds,
heliconia and coconuts are alongside inanimate signs of island life: a dinghy,
the lighthouse, and Bar Plaza. It’s no wonder Vieques has spawned so many
talented artists with its dramatic lighting and vibrant colors.
Unquestionably, one of our island’s most colorful inhabitants is its
artist-in-residence, Siddhia Hutchinson. When asked how she selects her
subjects, Siddhia’s answer underscores her strong, organic connection to
the island and its treasures. She is “struck” by the beauty of a tropical vista
or wants to “grab” a moment by recreating it on canvas or paper or film.
Siddhia is a fine artist, avid photographer, gallery owner and quasi-curator
of Vieques’ art history. Well- studied and passionately knowledgeable, Siddhia
easily shares her gift – her love of nature and the artistry of our world.
If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a planet to create an artist as
accomplished and genuine as Siddhia. Spend an afternoon with her and
you encounter ghosts and goblins and elves among fairy tales. All that
alongside anatomically correct birds and diagrammatic fruits of the land.
Color, vibrancy, richness, integrity, truth are the paints of her dynamic
palette.
Inspired by bird watching ventures with her grandmother, the young
artist studied the avian works of Audubon and Gould, mesmerized by their
skillful strokes. Not a terribly good student, Siddhia’s own drawing practice
brought focus and intention to her young world; her creations displayed
devotion and tenacity.
As a young woman, she and husband Stanley came to Vieques and spent
a year living in a rented house in La Hueca (for which they paid fifty dollars
a month!) while both tried their hand at watercolors. Stanley opted for a
career in architecture while Siddhia clung to her desire and destiny and
continues to put all of her energy into her own creations and the advancement of fellow artists.
“I think one of my strongest things is exploring people, watching other
people unfold.” It is with this compassionate eye that she is able to help
new artists find their talent.
Siddhia owns her creativity. She’s exacting and complex. She’s bright and
edgy. She is warm and she loves life. This artist reinvents herself through
new subjects, new media, new tools. And, while, an observer might think
the location directs the artist, when asked about local light, with its intense
saturation and how that richness affects her work, Siddhia says: “The light
in Vieques? The one inside me – is spectacular. It’s ever inspiring.”
Ever dynamic, Siddhia is constantly in motion, these days between
Vieques and El Yunque, her other love. Inspired by its lushness and tranquility, it is here that she retreats to create new works such as her Music
in Motion series. When Siddhia speaks of her time in the rain forest, you
sense that this wondrous place has taken her under its spell.
Vieques claimed Siddhia while she was still a young girl and the island’s
innocence and genuineness are mirrored in the grace and presence of
her devoted work. Today Siddhia’s commitment to showcasing island art
makes the whole world a prettier place. n

n excelente artículo en un boletín
de turismo de Santa Cruz publicado por La Red de Educadores
Ambientales de las Islas Vírgenes
(VINE por sus siglas en inglés) contiene
un error que paradójicamente, podría ser
visto como uno no muy lejos de la verdad:
“playas de arena blanca...son también
organismos vivos.” Por supuesto que no lo
son. Sin embargo, este pequeño error se
pierde en el mensaje de conservación ambiental de vital importancia que el artículo
expresa. Tanto por debajo, como por encima de sus orillas, las playas representan
ecosistemas compuestos de arena (entre
otras cosas, restos de roca erosionada), organismos sin caparazón, coral, entre otros,
que proveen un hábitat para organismos
como las estrellas de mar (a veces incorrectamente llamados “starfish”), erizos de
mar, “dólares de arena”, y por supuesto,
una gran variedad de peces. La arena de
playa también provee lugares para anidaje
y desove de especies en peligro de extinción como las tortugas marinas.
Sin embargo, el importante mensaje del
artículo de VINE es que las playas de arena
son ecosistemas que se caracterizan por
la presencia de las conchas descartadas
por los organismos (tales como el carrucho) las cuales casi siempre sirven de
hogar temporero para pulpos, cangrejos
ermitaños y otros organismos. Más allá de
eso, se dice que “trozos de coral”, que se
quedan en la playa hoy, se descomponen
y forman las playas de arena blanca del
mañana.
El artículo señala que cada año, en
Santa Cruz, más de una tonelada de arena,

Network of Environmental
Educators) contains an error that,
paradoxically, might well be viewed
as being not too very far from the
truth: “white sand beaches . . . are
also living organisms.” They are not,
of course. Yet, this very minor error
becomes lost in the vitally important
environmental conservation message the article conveys. Both below
and above their waterlines, beaches
represent ecosystems composed
of sand (among other things, the
debris of weathered rock), shelled
organisms, coral, and more, providing
a habitat for organisms such as sea
stars (often incorrectly referred to as
“starfish”), sea urchins, sand dollars
and, of course, a wide variety of fish.
Beach sand also provides nesting
and egg-laying sites for such endangered species as sea turtles.
However, the important message
of the VINE article is that sandy
beaches are ecosystems characterized by the presence of discarded
shells of organisms (such as conch)
which often serve as temporary

that, “Pieces of coral,” it is noted,
“that wash up on the beach today,
will break down and form the sandy
white beaches of tomorrow.”
The article points out that each
year, on St. Croix, more than one
ton of sand, coral, and sea shells,
packed by tourists “who wish to
take a piece of paradise home with
them,” are confiscated at the airport
and, hopefully, returned to the beach
ecosystems from which they came.
I therefore strongly urge Vieques
residents as well as the tourists who
visit our most beautiful of Caribbean
beaches, to resist the temptation
to take a bits of our paradise home
with them, instead leaving them for
nature to use, others to enjoy, and,
of course, for all willing to respect
our Island and its natural environs, to
revisit. n

Life is not a right; it’s a gift. The project Art for Healing wants
to enhance that gift, and to inspire life and living.
La vida no es un derecho; es un regalo. El proyecto de arte para
sanar desea enaltecer ese regalo. Inspirar vida.
Most walls in our hospital are empty, with the exception of some
educational material directly connected to health issues. Patients at the
hospital spend a lot of time waiting for an appointment and looking
at those empty walls. Gallery Galleon, directed by Marion Fischer and
artist Sandra Reyes, wants to establish a permanent art gallery of paintings to be donated to the hospital. A group of artists and young people
from the community will create or donate one or more paintings to fill
the walls with images that inspire health, joy and life. Right now some
young artists are inspired and are creating beautiful images at Gallery
Galleon to soothe the spirit of this island. Artists Myrna Pagan, Sandra
Reyes and Norma Torres are also donating works of art.
To open this gallery, there will be an unveiling event with the
participating artists and appropriate public officials. No funds will
be requested from the hospital. All support will come from private
foundations and businesses and from the artists, who will be donating
their work to the Susana Centeno Hospital. To guarantee the quality, appropriateness and most of all positive impact of the work on
emotional and physical health, all submitted work will go through a
review and acceptance process. By giving a little bit of ourselves we will
create a collective force that will transform the hospital environment
and thus serve to improve the quality of our life in Vieques. We accept
donations (also art materials) and talented people to participate in this

Dance Society in a concert of the West African dancing
and drumming handed down through his family – and
other Ghanaian performing families--for generations.
The performance, and an African-inspired dinner, are

benefit the Vieques Concert Society, which brings musical instruction to the

Musicologists have long admired the traditional sounds of Ghanaian music for
its visceral excitement, complex poly-rhythms, and highly sophisticated musical
structures. On top of the interlocking drum patterns, the traditional dance adds a
beautiful layer of complex body movements to the music, as the drum language
instructs the dancers as to how and where to move. Each musical selection has
its own purpose, history, and performance personality. They have been used for
centuries to celebrate harvests, victories at war and at peace, flirtation, and for
social rituals such as funerals.
Nani Agbeli is a native of the Ewe people from the Volta Region of Ghana. He
received his drum and dance training from his father, Godwin K. Agbeli, who was
the chairman of the National Folkloric Company at the Arts Council of Ghana. Nani
now teaches Ghanaian drumming and dance at Tufts University, Brandies University, and Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
The Agbekor Drum and Dance Society is Mr. Agbeli’s performing group, made
up of Boston-area professional musicians and former students of his, committed
to sharing this musical art form with others. The Agbekor Society was founded
by Professor David Locke, of Tufts University, an internationally known expert on
Ghanaian music, who will also be performing. While on island, the group will be
running a workshop for the students of Vieques at Fort Conde de Mirasol.

Banda Municipal de Vieques, Inc.
Municipal Band of Vieques, Inc.
El primer director de la banda municipal de Vieques, del cual existe
un documento, fue el Sr. Marcelo Maysonet. De dicha etapa de la
banda no hemos podido conseguir más información. El 18 de mayo de
1962 se inaugura una segunda etapa de la Banda Municipal de Vieques
a cargo del maestro Fortunato Vizcarrondo. Esa actividad se le dedica a
Don Marcelo Maysonet.
En octubre de 1995 comienza la tercera etapa de la banda municipal
de Vieques bajo la administración de la Sra. Manuela Santiago Collazo.
Para ello, fue necesario preparar una propuesta a la Oficina de Asuntos
de la Juventud. Le tocó el turno de dirigir la banda al Sr. Rubén
Bonano Villarreal, actual director, quien fue discípulo de Don Fortunato hasta que éste partió de Vieques a mediados de los años sesenta.
La banda municipal de Vieques ha transformado de una agrupación musical a un programa social. La música no es el fin ni la prioridad del programa. La música es el medio o recurso para mantener
a los jóvenes ocupados en actividades de aprendizaje positivas con la
supervisión de adultos.
Pueden pertenecer a la Banda niños y jóvenes desde la edad de
ocho años en adelante o que estén cursando el tercer grado de escuela
elemental. También pueden pertenecer adultos que quieran aprender a tocar algún instrumento o que ya toquen y quieran tocar en
la banda. La matrícula activa de la banda fluctúa entre los 80 a 120
jóvenes anualmente.
El programa de la Banda Municipal de Vieques ofrece varios
servicios a los miembros de la comunidad de Vieques y a los de otros
municipios. Para ello contamos con varias agrupaciones entre ellas:
Banda de Conciertos, Banda de Marcha, Taller de Orquesta, Trío de
Maderas, Conjunto de maderas y la Orquesta de Cámara, entre otras.
En el mes de octubre, se unió a la banda un nuevo grupo de Abanderadas y Batuteras las cuales nos acompañan en las diferentes actividades
donde puedan participar.
A los estudiantes que tienen mayor necesidad de estudio en sus instrumentos se les provee tutorías ya sea por el maestro, el secretario de
la banda, estudiantes que están haciendo sus horas comunitarias, por
padres y por otros miembros de la banda y de la comunidad.
La meta del programa es mantener la mayor cantidad de jóvenes que
sea posible. Con el tiempo y si contamos con los recursos necesarios
vamos a ir transformando la Banda de Concierto en una Banda Sinfónica. Para el semestre de agosto de 2012, esperamos añadirle violonchelos y contrabajos a la banda y así dar inicio a la transformación de
una Banda de Conciertos a una Banda Sinfónica. Esperamos aumentar
la matrícula del programa de cuerdas y seguir reforzando la orquesta de
cámara hasta convertirla en la primera Orquesta Sinfónica de Vieques.
Esperamos seguir reclutando nuevos niños, jóvenes y adultos para
trabajar con las diferentes agrupaciones que estarán funcionando
tales como: Banda Sinfónica, Orquesta Sinfónica, Banda de Marcha,
Conjunto de plena, Conjunto de Nueva Trova, Conjunto de metales,
Conjunto de percusión, y esperamos organizar un Coro de la comunidad para que cante junto a la Banda y junto a la Orquesta de Cámara
en Navidad y en otras ocasiones (ya se están separando las fechas para
los conciertos del coro en diciembre.)
Estamos trabajando y planificando un viaje para presentar la Banda
en Orlando en el verano de 2013 para lo cual ya comenzamos la fase de
planificación y organización para recaudar los fondos necesarios.

Mr. Marcelo Maysonet was the first director of the municipal band
of Vieques, according to an existing document. We have not been able
to get more information of that phase of the band. On May 18, 1962
the second phase of the Banda Municipal de Vieques was inaugurated
by Maestro Fortunato Vizcarrondo. This event is dedicated to Don
Marcelo Maysonet.
In October 1995 begins the third stage of the municipal band of
Vieques under the administration of Mrs. Manuela Santiago Collazo.
For this it was necessary to prepare a proposal to the Office of Youth
Affairs. It was Rubén Villarreal Bonano’s turn to lead the band, the
current director, who was a disciple of Don Fortunato until heleft
Vieques in the mid-sixties.
The municipal band of Vieques has transformed from a musical
group to a social program. The music is neither the end nor the priority of the program. Music is the means and resources to keep young
people engaged in positive learning activities with adult supervision.
Children and youth from the eight years old or those attending third
grade of elementary school may belong to the Banda. Those adults
who want to learn to play an instrument or who want to play in the
band may also belong. Active enrollment ranges from 80 to 120 youth
annually.
The program of the Banda Municipal de Vieques offers various
services to members of the community of Vieques and those of other
municipalities. For this we have several groups including: Concert
Band, Marching Band, Orchestra Workshop, Timber Trio, Wood Ensemble and the Chamber Orchestra, among others. In October a new
group of majoretts joined the band and participate with us in a variety
of activities.
Students who have greater need to study their instruments get
tutorials provided either by the teacher, by the secretary of the band, by
students who are doing their community service hours and by parents
and other members of the band and the community.
The program’s goal is to keep reaching as many young people as
possible. Over time and if we have the necessary resources we want to
transform the Concert Band into a Symphonic Band. For the August
2012 semester, we hope to add cellos and double basses to the band
and begin the transformation of a Concert Band to a Symphonic
Band. We hope to increase enrollment in the strings program and
further enhance the chamber orchestra to become the first Symphony
Orchestra of Vieques.
We hope to continue recruiting new children, youth and adults to
work with the different groups that will serve as: Symphonic Band,
Symphonic Orchestra, Marching Band, Plena Music Ensemble, Set
of Nueva Trova, Metal Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and we hope
to organize a town choir to sing with the band and with the Chamber
Orchestra at Christmas and other occasions (we already are separating
the dates for the choir concerts in December.)
We are working and planning a trip to present the band in Orlando
in the summer of 2013 for which we have already started the planning
and organization phase to raise the necessary funds.

Muelle de la Esperanza
El “Muelle de Pescadores” de la Esperanza
representa la pieza central de la playa Esperanza,
y sirve a la comunidad local, los que practican deportes acuáticos y a los visitantes de la isla. Como
resultado del Huracán Irene el pasado agosto de
2011, la superficie del “Muelle de los Pescadores”
sufrió daño significativo. Dos de las cuatro secciones exteriores del muelle estaban totalmente
inservibles, lo cual representaba un verdadero peligro para cualquier persona que utilizara el muelle.
Tanto los negocios locales, como los pescadores y los operadores turísticos dependen de una
plataforma estable para sus operaciones. Los
residentes locales y visitantes utilizan el muelle
para disfrutar de los muchos placeres que ofrece
la hermosa costa caribeña.
Con la temporada alta, casi sobre nosotros,
ahora es el momento de actuar. Esfuerzos
organizados que envuelven los negocios locales,
pescadores y miembros de la comunidad trabajan
con un proyecto para renovar el muelle antes de
que ocurra una tragedia y alguien pueda resultar
herido.
La Asociación de Pescadores de Vieques dirigida
por Prieto Ventura, ha unido esfuerzos junto con
operadores turísticos y negocios locales para
restaurar el muelle y crear una plataforma segura
para negocios relacionados con las operaciones
marítimas y para el disfrute de residentes y
visitantes.
Han contribuido a este esfuerzo la Cámara de
Comercio de Vieques y sus miembros, usuarios del
muelle, así como generosos residentes de Vieques.
El trabajo ha sido completado en dos fases, debido
a problemas con el ferry y la entrega de materiales. La fase 1 fue completada el 16 de diciembre
de 2011, estuvo enfocada en la reparación de las

Esperanza Pier
The “Fishermen’s Pier” in Esperanza represents
the centerpiece of the Esperanza beach and serves
the local community, water sport enthusiasts and
guests to the island. As a result of hurricane Irene
in August 2011 the “Fishermen’s Pier” suffered
significant damage to the deck surface. The two
outer most sections of the four section structure
were rendered completely unusable, presenting a
hazard to anyone using the pier.
Local businesses such as fishermen and tour
operators depend on a stable platform to operate
from. Local residents and guests use the pier to
enjoy the many pleasures of the beautiful Caribbean coast.
With the high season virtually upon us, now was
the time to act. A well organized effort involving
local businesses, fishermen and members of the
community mounted a project to renovate the
pier before tragedy could strike and someone
becomes injured.
The Vieques Fishermen’s Association, headed
by Prieto Ventura, joined resources with tour
operators and local businesses to restore the pier
and create a safe platform for marine related businesses to operate from, and residents and guests
to enjoy.
Contributions to this effort were made by the
Vieques Chamber of Commerce, its members, and
users of the pier as well as generous Vieques residents. The work was accomplished in two phases
due to problems with the ferry delivering materials.
Phase 1 was accomplished on December 16th,
2011 and focused on repair of the surfaces most
damaged by the hurricane. This important first
step enabled the pier to be safe and functional prior to the start of the important Christmas holiday.
Phase 2 conducted on January 19th, 2012 finished
up the remaining surface area and installed a new
fascia on the east (windward) side. Efforts will
continue to further improve the pier and maintain
this valuable Vieques resource. n
Parque Ecológico Costero la Ceiba
Coastal Ecological Park “La Ceiba”
El proyecto es una iniciativa comunitaria para la creación y mantenimiento de un Parque Ecológico ”La Ceiba” en el Área Oeste de la
Isla Municipio de Vieques. El propósito del parque es crear espacios
públicos dedicados al disfrute de los residentes, visitantes, turistas y
el público en general. Se propone que el mismo conserve la Flora y
Fauna, creando un oasis funcional del área en su estado natural.
La propuesta incluye la creación de senderos paisajistas, una
pista de caminar, anfiteatro al aire libre, pabellón, área de pasadías,
columpios, estacionamientos y la identificación de la flora y la fauna.
El desarrollo de este Parque Ecológico lleva varios años. Gracias a
la iniciativa de Arlene Cruz y su invitación a colaborar con el Departamento de Reciclaje del Municipio de Vieques en la creación de un
parque en el área de La Cieba Histórica.

The project is a community initiative for the creation and maintenance of a Coastal Ecological Park “La Ceiba” on the West side of
the Municipal Island of Vieques. The purpose of the park is for the
enjoyment of residents, visitors, tourists and the general public. It is
proposed to conserve the flora and fauna creating a functional oasis
area in its natural state.
The proposal includes the creation of natural trails, a walking
track, outdoor amphitheater, pavilion, picnic area, playgrounds,
parking and the identification of flora and fauna.
The development of this Ecological Park has taken several years.
Thanks to the initiative of Arlene Cruz and her invitation to collaborate with the Recycling Office of the Vieques Municipality in
the creation of a park at the Historic Ceiba area.
