But Advent, and especially this weekend’s readings, point out to us our great need for Christ. If Christ had asked us to be in charge of announcing His coming, what would we have suggested He do? Perhaps we would have rejected starting this announcement in the desert. And yet, as Scripture tells us, “God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor our ways His ways.” John the Baptist, His herald, preaches conversion, that is, a change of heart to receive the Lord. And he does this in the most humanly absurd way; yet, it is the most efficient in order to announce the most important event in the history of humanity. We need conversion. To believe is to experience it; and as long as we believe, we continue to change. If the change stops, we have stopped believing. Conversion, change, is reconciliation, living in union with God and with our brothers and sisters. We all wish to live in joy and peace. But praying for God’s kingdom to come while we put obstacles to that coming by our personal and social sins is bad manners indeed. This Advent let us retake the right path in our lives. Let us walk with the Lord who cleanses us from our sins today and always. My sincere thanks to the members of Coral Cubana and their director Andrés Trujillo for visiting our church and performing at Mass today. The Christmas toy drive for the children of the Grove Outreach and Mission St. Ann in Homestead is starting. We will be receiving toys until December 13 th. Bring a toy and put a smile on a child’s face. Thank you in advance for your generosity. “Could you not watch one hour with me?” (Mk 14:37) JOIN US FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON THURSDAYS IN THE CHURCH From 8:30 am to 7:00 pm “¿No podían velar una hora conmigo?” (Mc. 14, 37) ADORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA LOS JUEVES DURANTE TODO EL DÍA EN LA IGLESIA De 8:30 am a 7:00 pm Fr. P. Federico Page 3 Page 3 STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION COMUNIDAD EN ACCIÓN MASS INTENTIONS Intenciones Misas Sat/Sab, December 5 5:30 pm Eugenia Colmenares María H. By the Middle Ages, Christians adapted the tradition of Germanic peoples using wreaths with candles during December and used Advent wreaths as part of their spiritual preparation for Christmas. The Advent wreath consists of a circle of evergreen branches with four candles, three purple and one rose, representing the four weeks of Advent. The purple ones symbolize the prayer, penance, sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, the midpoint of Advent, when preparation is now half over and we are close to Christmas. The lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead. Second Sunday of Advent Page 7 The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA The Jubilee of Mercy / El jubileo de la Misericordia Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. [The Father] sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person reveals the mercy of God. Born in Trier around 340, Ambrose was elected bishop of Milan at age thirty-five. An eloquent preacher and faithful defender of the faith, he extolled the virginity of Mary and defended the divinity of Christ against the Arian heresy. Ambrose died in 397, and is regarded as one of the four original Doctors of the Church. Diciembre 7, San Ambrosio. Second Sunday of Advent Page 9 Thanksgiving School Mass Thanksgiving Day has special meaning for us for we know that gratitude lies at the very heart of stewardship. Saint Hugh School and Church showed their gratitude by giving back to the community with a bountiful collection of food that was represented in the offertory during our Thanksgiving school mass. The congregation was welcomed by the second grade class as they were gathered in front of the altar dressed as Indians and pilgrims. The mass was filled with uplifting songs of thanks and praise sung by the second and third graders. At the conclusion of the Mass the students who represented the school through various fall team sports were recognized and the November students of the month were honored for their demonstration of what encompasses the spirit of Saint Hugh. We have much to be thankful for! Virtue of the Month: GOODNESS During the month of December, St. Hugh students will focus on the virtue of Goodness. Goodness is recognizing we are made in the image and likeness of God, and making choices to demonstrate our love for God and our neighbor. They will learn the story of the first saint of Chile, Saint Teresa de los Andes. She was an ordinary person, yet she focused her life on Jesus and tried to love others as He loves them. Page 10 St. Hugh First Grade Thanksgiving Celebration Celebrating Thanksgiving with her students is by far one of the first grade teacher’s, Mrs. Rico, favorite things to do. “It is a time that we set aside just to give thanks for all our blessings.” To celebrate the season, the first graders prepared a Thanksgiving Prayer Celebration for their parents. Dressed in beautiful fall clothes, the children recited an animated version of the poem “T’was the Night Before Thanksgiving”, and also sang for their families. They gathered with their parents around the table to pray before enjoying a fun and delicious feast blessed by Father Damian. Thank you to all the moms, dads, and grandparents that came and help make it such a special time. On Friday, November 20, St. Hugh students and faculty celebrated the feast day of Saint Hugh with the annual field day where they enjoyed different athletic events, among them this tug-of-war between teams led by Fr. Federico and our principal, Mrs. Fernández.
