From the Pastor
There was a Catholic who believed that the only ones
who went to heaven were other Catholics. When he
died, he was met at the gates of heaven by St. Peter and
courteously shown around. Sure enough, just as he
thought, everyone he saw in heaven was Catholic.
After a while, they came to a high wall. St. Peter,
putting his fingers to his lips, said, “Shsh, be very quiet!
On the other side of the wall are all the Protestants and
they think they are the only ones in heaven.”
Well, both the Catholic and the Protestants were
mistaken. Heaven is for everyone. Salvation is
universal. As the first reading tells us, “I come to gather
nations of every language, they shall come and see my
glory.” Or as Pope Francis said, “The Lord has
redeemed all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us,
not just Catholics. Everyone! Even the atheists.
But even if heaven is open for all, it doesn’t mean that
everyone will be saved. There is a big distinction
between being redeemed and being saved. In His Son,
Jesus Christ, God has redeemed all of the children of
Adam and Eve. He has delivered us from sin and from
the power of death. By his death and resurrection,
Christ has paid the price and bought us back. He has
redeemed us, all of us.
Salvation however, requires our response to God’s
offer. It is not something automatic. It is possible only
when we respond to God’s offer. It is a gift and a gift is
not truly a gift unless and until it has been received. To
be saved is an invitation which we can accept or reject.
That is why when someone asked Jesus in the gospel
today, “Lord, will only few people be saved?” Jesus did
not answer him directly. It was not the right question.
What good will it serve to know how many will be
saved? Jesus, rather spoke about the question that must
be asked, “how will we be saved?” And that is to enter
the narrow door.
It is narrow because as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
said in one of his homilies, “All can enter eternal life but
for everyone the door is narrow. The path to eternal life
is open to all but is narrow because it is demanding,
asks for commitment and denial of our own
selfishness.”
It is narrow because only the little ones, the humble will
fit through; it is narrow because only those without
attachments will enter. Redeemed and saved, may we be
both because we entered the narrow door.

for this coming year. If you have never been baptized or baptized
in another faith tradition and are interested in learning more about
the Catholic faith, then the RCIA is for you. If you are a baptized
Catholic and are in need of the Sacrament of Confirmation and
Holy Eucharist, then we invite you to join us as well for
sacramental preparation.

DEL PASTOR
Había un Católico que creía que los únicos que iban al
cielo eran otros Católicos, fue recibido en las puertas del
cielo por San Pedro y le enseñaron cortezmente los
alrededores. Por seguro, tal como el pensó, todos los que
vió en el cielo eran Católicos.
Después de un rato, llegaron a una pared alta.
San Pedro, colocando sus dedos en sus labios, dijo,
“¡Shshs, guarda silencio! Del otro lado de la pared están
todos los Protestantes y ellos piensan que son los únicos
en el cielo.”
Bien, ambos los Católicos y los Protestantes estaban
equivocados. El Cielo es para todos.La Salvación es
universal. Como nos dice la primera lectura, “Yo
vendré para reunir a las naciones de toda lengua.
Vendrán y verán mi Gloria.” O como el Papa Francisco
dijo, “El Señor ha redimido a todos nosotros, con la
Sangre de Cristo: todos nosotros, no solamente los
Católicos. ¡Todos! Aun los ateos.
Pero aunque el cielo está abierto para todos, no significa
que todos serán salvados. Existe una gran diferencia
entre ser redimido y ser salvo. En Su Hijo, Jesucristo,
Dios redimió a todos los hijos de Adán y Eva. El nos
rescató del pecado y del poder de la muerte. Por su
muerte y resurrección, Cristo pagó el precio y nos
compró de regreso. El nos redimió, a todos nosotros.
La Salvación sin embargo, require nuestra respuesta a
la oferta de Dios. No es algo automatico. Solamente es
posible cuando le respondemos a la oferta de Dios. Un
regalo y un regalo no es realmente un regalo a menos y
hasta que sea recibido. El ser salvo es una invitación que
podemos aceptar o rechazar.
Ese es el porqué cuando alguien le pregunta a Jesús en
el Evangelio de hoy, “Señor, ¿es verdad que son pocos
los que se salvan” Jesús no le responde directamente.
No era la pregunta correcta. ¿Qué de bueno tiene el
saber cuantos serán salvados?” Jesús, en su lugar habló
acerca de que la pregunta que se debe hacer es, “¿cómo
podremos salvarnos?” Y lo que es cómo entrar por la
puerta angosta.
