¿CUÁLES SON VUESTRAS FUENTES DE INSPIRACIÓN?
Estamos muy inspirados por lo cotidiano, lo
mundano y lo ordinario. La estructura misma
de Shanghai como ciudad y las actividades
diarias en los alrededores de la ciudad son
en gran medida una fuente de inspiración. La
tradición arquitectónica occidental forma la
base de nuestra educación, pero culturalmente
somos muy chinos y la influencia de esta cultura
se percibe especialmente en nuestras obras
ubicadas en China. También nos gusta estudiar
la cultura local del lugar en el que estemos
realizando nuestro trabajo, por lo que nuestras
fuentes de inspiración varían según el lugar en
el que esté ubicado el proyecto. Aparte de la
arquitectura y el diseño, también nos inspiran
otras disciplinas. Las palabras nos inspiran.
La música nos inspira. La poesía, la pintura,
la naturaleza y los sabores son todas fuentes
que nos inspiran en diferentes momentos por
diferentes motivos.
¿CREÉIS QUE EL MOBILIARIO DE EXTERIOR ES UNA
EXTENSIÓN DE LA ARQUITECTURA?
Pensamos que el mobiliario es una extensión
tanto del interior como del exterior y desde
luego de la arquitectura.
SEGÚN VUESTRA EXPERIENCIA, ¿QUÉ VALORES
CULTURALES CREÉIS QUE APORTA?
La base de mi pensamiento arquitectónico y el
proceso de diseño se deben mayoritariamente
a la experiencia de haber estudiado en el
extranjero. Los elementos de diseño no son
como los productos químicos, que se pueden
mezclar obteniendo una fórmula y creando
resultados. Se trata de un proceso mucho más
artístico e indefinible, pero todo aquello con lo
que entramos en contacto se convierte en lo que
somos y en fuente de inspiración de nuestro trabajo.
JIAN ES VUESTRA NUEVA COLECCIÓN PARA
GANDIABLASCO, ¿QUÉ OS IMPULSÓ A TRABAJAR
CON NOSOTROS?
A lo largo de los años, GANDIABLASCO nos ha
llamado la atención por tratarse de una marca
elegante que fabrica mobiliario de exterior de
calidad y bien diseñado. Cuando la marca nos
contactó, estábamos interesados en explorar
la relación entre el mobiliario de exterior y el
espacio interior, los edificios y el paisaje. En ese
momento también estábamos trabajando en una
exposición en Hong Kong en la que exploramos
la idea de JIAN, un carácter en chino que es
muy profundo pero sencillo y corriente al mismo
tiempo. Fue entonces cuando pensamos que
era una oportunidad perfecta para explorar al
mismo tiempo todas estas cuestiones que nos
interesaban, creando una colección llamada JIAN.
¿QUIÉN OS INSPIRA?
Los viejos maestros, el llamado “canon” de la
arquitectura siguen emocionándonos. Observar
las obras de muchos gigantes contemporáneos
también es estimulante.
Le Corbusier sigue siendo muy relevante en el
estudio de la forma y de los espacios. Carlos
Scarpa continúa inspirándonos con sus detalles
y composición. Adolf Loos, con su claridad y
rigor. Entre los arquitectos contemporáneos,
admiramos el trabajo de Sanaa, Álvaro Siza,
David Chipperfield y Peter Zumthor. Los avances
que ha logrado SAANA por medio de una nueva
estética que desmaterializa la arquitectura
y manipula el programa son increíbles. La
manipulación de los espacios de Álvaro Siza,
la disciplina pedagógica de Chipperfield y la
sensibilidad material así como la atención al
detalle de Zumthor son todos muy inspiradores.
¿Y QUÉ HAY DE NUEVOS TALENTOS DE TODO EL
MUNDO Y VUESTRO INTERESANTE PROYECTO
DESIGN REPUBLIC?
Design Republic es una plataforma de diseño
de venta al público cuyo objetivo es cambiar
los conceptos de venta y merchandising de
la China contemporánea. Cuenta con algunas
de las mejores piezas de diseño del mundo y
distribuye tanto a individuos como a proyectos
en China. Aunque Shanghai estaba en pleno
auge económico, había un vacío en el campo
del diseño. En ese momento, Rossana y yo
sentimos una verdadera necesidad de elevar la
conciencia de la sociedad en su conjunto con
respecto al diseño, por lo que la intención inicial
al crear Design Republic era que se tratase
de una “plataforma para el diseño”. Queremos
que sea un lugar en el que la excelencia del
diseño se pueda exponer, vender, disfrutar,
debatir y aprender. Queremos llevar los mejores
productos del mundo a un lugar y esperamos
que a largo plazo podamos llevar lo mejor de
China al resto del mundo.
NERI&HU, NO SOIS EXACTAMENTE DE CHINA.
¿CÓMO HA AFECTADO ESTO A VUESTRO TRABAJO
CULTURALMENTE? ¿ES RESULTADO DE UN
LENGUAJE MULTICULTURAL?
El padre de Rossana es de Shanghai y su madre
es de Taiwan, como ella. Rossana creció en
Taiwan en un momento en el que el partido que
gobernaba creía que eran la verdadera China.
La familia de Lyndon es de la provincia de Fujian
y él creció en el enclave chino de las Filipinas
hablando chino y rodeado de influencias
chinas muy tradicionales. Más adelante ambos
estudiamos en los Estados Unidos y trabajamos
en Asia. Ahora, de regreso en Shanghai, tras
haber vivido en China durante los últimos diez
años, es difícil definir lo que somos, ya que
nuestra identidad está formada por diversas
culturas e idiomas. No obstante, la cultura china
es la que más nos influye y con la que más nos
identificamos. Nos hemos volcado mucho en
analizar lo que significa ser un ciudadano chino
viviendo en el extranjero, así como un ciudadano
chino que se ha educado en el extranjero y
después regresa a China. Desde luego, estamos
muy interesados en encontrar una nueva
abstracción china en nuestro enfoque hacia el
diseño. Dado que no estamos tan interesados
en el estilo y la arquitectura, solemos analizar
la esencia de los espacios chinos (es decir, las
casas con patio y las tradicionales) para entender
cómo interaccionan con nuestro trabajo.
¿DÓNDE Y COMO TRABAJÁIS VUESTROS DISEÑOS?
Siempre empezamos todos nuestros proyectos
a partir de un concepto y de una gran labor de
investigación. Todavía somos demasiado jóvenes
para tener un lenguaje diferenciado. Creo que
es importante experimentar y explorar diferentes
ideas de diseño. Por supuesto, hay cuestiones
que siempre exploramos, como la estratificación,
la transparencia, la textura, el encuadre y la
materialidad. Así que, en lo esencial, algunos de
estos temas siempre forman parte de nuestros
proyectos. Nuestra filosofía de diseño siempre
comienza a partir de un concepto subyacente.
Es fundamental que todos los proyectos se
basen en un concepto que tenga fuerza.
¿CREÉIS QUE EL DISEÑO, LA ARQUITECTURA
Y LA CULTURA EN GENERAL ESTÁN

Sin duda. Son expresiones que se entremezclan
en formas que son difíciles de describir o definir.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
We are very much inspired by the everyday, the
mundane and the ordinary. The very fabric of
Shanghai as a city and the everyday activities
in and around the city are a great source of
inspiration. The western architectural tradition is
at the basis of our education, though culturally
we are very Chinese and there is a clear Chinese
influence particularly in our work located in
China. We also like to examine the local culture
of the place where we are carrying out our work,
so this varies according to where the project
is located.
Disciplines other than design and architecture
also inspire us. Words inspire us. Music inspires
us. Poetry, painting, nature, and tastes all inspire
us at different times for different reasons.

quite inspiring.
JIAN IS A COLLECTION WITH ITS OWN PERSONALITY,
COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT?
“Jian” is the word for “space”, but it is also one
of the characters that make up the words for
“time”, and “room”, “people”…etc. To us, it is the
concept of the “in-between” that is seen in many
realms of art and architecture, music and dance.
It is a realm that is about connections and
disconnections, links and breaks, more and less,
earth and sky, beauty and crudeness, silence
and sound…etc. It is simplicity, but not simplistic.
It is simplicity in form, but not in content. We
see this collection as something that exemplifies
this concept.
WHERE AND HOW DO YOU WORK ON YOUR DESIGNS?
DO YOU BELIEVE OUTDOOR FURNITURE IS AN
EXTENSION OF ARCHITECTURE?
We think furniture is an extension of both the
interior and the exterior, and that it is very much
an extension of architecture.
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHICH CULTURAL VALUES DO
YOU THINK HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR WORK?
Studying abroad pretty much laid the
foundations of my architectural thinking and
design process. Design elements are not like
chemicals that you can mix into a formula and
then obtain results. It is a much more artistic and
un-definable process, but everything we come
into contact with becomes who we are and this
builds the inspiration pool for our work.
JIAN IS YOUR NEW COLLECTION FOR GANDIABLASCO,
WHAT MOVED YOU TO WORK WITH US?
Over the years, GANDIABLASCO has caught
our attention for being a graceful brand that
produces quality and well-designed outdoor
furniture. When we were approached by
the brand we were interested in exploring
issues between outdoor furniture and its
relationship with interior spaces, buildings and
landscapes. At the time we were also working
on an exhibition in Hong Kong that explored
the idea of JIAN, a character in Chinese that is
very profound, yet simple and ordinary. So we
thought it was a perfect opportunity to explore
all these issues together by creating a collection
called JIAN.
WHO ARE YOU INSPIRED BY?
We are still moved by the old masters, the
so-called “canon” of architecture. It is a source
of inspiration to look at the work of many
contemporary giants. Le Corbusier is still very
relevant when studying shapes and spaces.
Carlos Scarpa continues to inspire us with
his details and composition; Adolf Loos, with
his clarity and rigor. Regarding contemporary
architects, we admire the work of Sanaa, Alvaro
Siza, David Chipperfield and Peter Zumthor. The
breakthroughs that Sanaa has achieved through
a new sense of aesthetics in dematerializing
architecture and manipulating programs is
amazing. Alvaro Siza’s manipulation of spaces,
Chipperfield’s pedagogical discipline and
HOW ABOUT NEW TALENTS AROUND THE WORLD AND
YOUR INTERESTING PROJECT “DESIGN REPUBLIC”?
Design Republic is a retail platform for
design that hopes to change the retail and
merchandising concepts for contemporary
China. It houses some of the finest design pieces
in the world, and distributes to both individuals
and projects in China. Although Shanghai was
booming economically, there was a design
vacuum. Rossana and I at that time felt a real
need to raise the design consciousness of
society as a whole, and so setting up Design
Republic as a ‘platform for design’ was the initial
intention. It is intended as a place where design
excellence can be exhibited, sold, enjoyed,
discussed and learned. We aim to bring the
best of the world’s products together to a single
space and hopefully, in the long run, bring the
best of China to the world.
For every project, we always start with a concept
and we also do a lot of research. We are still
too young to have a distinct language. I think it
is important to experiment and explore different
design ideas. Of course there are issues that we
always explore, such as layering, transparency,
texture, framing and materiality. So, in essence,
some of these issues are always part of our
projects. Our Design Philosophy always starts
with an underlying concept. It is crucial to have a
strong concept behind every project.
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE AND
CULTURE IN GENERAL ARE INTERRELATED?
Indeed, very much so. They are all expressions
that are intermingled in ways that are difficult to
describe or define.
NERI&HU, YOU AREN’T EXACTLY FROM CHINA. HOW
HAS THIS CULTURALLY AFFECTED YOUR WORK? IS IT A
RESULT OF A MULTICULTURAL LANGUAGE USE?
Rossana’s father is from Shanghai and her
mother is from Taiwan, as she is. Rossana grew
up in Taiwan during a time when the ruling party
believed they were the real China. Lyndon’s
family is from the Fujian Province and grew up
in a Chinese enclave in the Philippines, speaking
Chinese and surrounded by very traditional
Chinese influences. Later on, they both went
on to the US to study and then worked in Asia.
Now, having returned to Shanghai and having
lived in China for the past ten years, it is difficult
to say what we are, because we identify with
multiple languages and cultures. However,
Chinese culture is still the one that influences us
most and with which we most identify. We have
been hugely involved in exploring what it means
to be a Chinese living abroad, as well as be part
of the foreign educated Chinese diaspora living
in China.
We are certainly interested in finding a new
Chinese abstraction in our approach to design.
Since we are not so interested in style, in
architecture, we tend to explore the essence
of Chinese spaces (i.e. courtyard houses and
lane houses) and understand how they relate
to our work.
“JIAN” IS THE WORD FOR “SPACE”, BUT IT IS
ALSO ONE OF THE CHARACTERS THAT MAKE
UP THE WORDS FOR “TIME”, AND “ROOM”,
“PEOPLE”… TO US, IT IS THE CONCEPT OF
THE “IN-BETWEEN” THAT IS SEEN IN MANY
REALMS OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE,
MUSIC AND DANCE.

La colección JIAN para GANDIABLASCO es una colección
de mobiliario de exterior inspirada por el concepto “entre”.
En chino, el carácter JIAN significa “entre” y es uno de los
dos caracteres que forma las palabras “espacio tiempo时间
y personas”, entre otras muchas. Queríamos crear una
colección que tuviese una calidad etérea, que capturase
tanto el tiempo como el espacio, el cielo y la tierra, algo
que le diese poesía a la vida en espacios abiertos y que
ofreciese un santuario de paz al ajetreo diario.
La colección consta de varios tamaños y funciones con
diferentes fines al aire libre.
The JIAN collection for GANDIABLASCO is a collection
of outdoor furniture inspired by the concept of “inbetween”. The character JIAN in Chinese has the meaning
of “between”, and is one of two characters that make up
the words “space, Time时间, and People”, among many others.
We wanted to create a collection that has an ethereal
quality, capturing both time and space， the sky and land,
something to give poetry to outdoor living, and offer a
restful sanctuary to everyday busy-ness.
The collection is made up of various sizes and functions
for different outdoor purposes.

El sofá con lona es lo que mejor expresa a JIAN, en el que
una estructura parcialmente cubierta protege al usuario
de la luz del sol y de otros elementos, creando un espacio
poético a través de la experiencia de sentarse en esta
“habitación”. La palabra para “habitación” es 房间房间.

industrial y su arquitectura sirven de inspiración
para generar un detalle constructivo a partir del
cual se desarrolla la estructura base de aluminio;
un análisis de las diferentes formas de sentarse,

Whilst industrial manufacturing processes and
their architecture are a source of inspiration to
generate a construction detail that the aluminum
base structure is developed from, an analysis of
the different manners in which people sit down,
including both improvised and informal ways,
helps to define the collection´s overall geometry.

cuerpo humano, produciendo una inequívoca
sensación de equilibrio.

collection that takes into account the links
between the pieces and which interacts with the
human body, resulting in an unequivocal sense
of balance.

Stack es una colección de mobiliario de exterior apilable
inspirada en el mundo náutico y con reminiscencias
estilísticas de los años 60-70. La estructura clara y
sincera configura unas piezas elementales, equilibradas y
sumamente livianas gracias a los materiales y al concepto
formal que rige toda la colección. Sobre el cuerpo
de aluminio extruído se coloca un elemento de tejido
auto-portante, una innovación dentro de Gandia Blasco,
logrando una construcción sencilla de gran ligereza y
confort. El resultado es un sistema de piezas dotado de
atributos para resolver tanto grandes instalaciones de
contract como pequeñas actuaciones residenciales.
Stack is a stackable outdoor furniture collection inspired
by the nautical world with design elements reminiscent
of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The collection’s clean and
straightforward structures along with the materials used
give shape to simple, balanced, and incredibly light pieces.
GANDIABLASCO’s innovative design uses self-supporting
fabric over the extruded aluminum body to provide a
simple construction with lightness and comfort. The Stack
collection is ideal for both large contract installations as
well as small residential projects.

El proyecto DozeQuinze está inspirado en la observación de
las densas conexiones de cables de la ciudad de Sao Paulo.
DozeQuinze es una línea de mobiliario en la cual se
traspone este elemento característico confiriendo a cada
objeto un carácter único y distinto... DozeQuinze está
diseñada para un espacio interior y exterior.
Su estructura es de tubo de acero inoxidable y el asiento
está fabricado con una banda elástica. Esto confiere a la
estructura solidez y comodidad.
DozeQuinze is a project that was inspired from the observation
of the thick cable connections in the city of Sao Paulo.
DozeQuinze is a line of furniture which transposes the
characteristic element transmitting to each object a unique
and distinct character.
DozeQuinze is designed for indoor and outdoor space. Its
structure is stainless steel tube and the seat is made with
a rubber band. This structure gives strength and comfort.

TEXTILE
Se trata de un proyecto inspirado en la moda, se extrapola
al mundo del mobiliario los conceptos y las técnicas
empleadas en los textiles.
La unión de las piezas que conforman la colección se
hace mediante un sistema que simula las costuras de las
prendas. De esta forma se consigue un elemento de gran
flexibilidad que se adapta a todas las personas, igual que
una prenda de moda.
Las costuras de la silla le proporcionan la ergonomía
perfecta, proporcionando confort y dándole carácter
propio al diseño.
This project draws it inspiration from fashion; the concepts
and techniques used in textiles have been carried over
into the world of furniture.
The way items in the collection are put together uses a
system that simulates how seams are stitched in clothes.
This enables us to obtain an item of great flexibility that
adapts to everyone, the same way as a fashion garment.
The stitching in the chair makes it perfectly ergonomic,
providing comfort and giving the design its own
individual character.

“Flat es una colección de muebles de exterior que
diseñamos para GANDIABLASCO en 2006. Cinco años
después, su éxito ha sido tan grande que seguimos
diseñando nuevas referencias. Es una colección equilibrada
y flexible; un concepto formal esencial, con una estructura
liviana y una incorporación importante de tejido.”
“Flat is a collection of outdoor furniture that we designed
for GANDIABLASCO in 2006. Five years on, it has been
so successful that we’ve continued designing new items.
It’s a well-balanced and flexible collection; an essentially
formal concept with a light and airy structure in which
fabric plays an important part.”

“Na Xemena representa algo más que una colección
de mobiliario para exterior. Realmente ha supuesto un
concepto inédito en el ámbito del outdoor que ha servido
para generar una nueva atmósfera contemporánea.
Concebí esta colección como respuesta a una necesidad
concreta, convertir el espacio exterior en una extensión
del espacio vivido. Nació desde la arquitectura, con la
solvencia conceptual y técnica que ésta le transmitía. Su
geométrica elemental la hizo trascender por su capacidad
de respuesta a cánones de atemporalidad y universalidad.“
“Na Xemena is more than just an outdoor furniture
collection. In fact, it was a completely original concept
in the outdoor environment and has served to generate
a brand new contemporary atmosphere. I came up with
this collection in response to a specific need, to make
the outdoor space into an extension of the living space.
It arose from architecture, which gave it a certain amount
of conceptual and technical reliability. Its basic geometry
meant it could go much further and be capable of
responding to norms of timelessness and universality.”

Esta colección de taburetes y mesas auxiliares se crea con
la técnica tradicional de India de tejer alambres alrededor
de una estructura de metal. Los espacios que quedan entre los alambres se amplían gradualmente, creando una
sensación de gradación. Un diseño creado gracias a un
pequeño cambio aplicado a una técnica ya existente.
This collection of stools and low tables is based on a traditional Indian furniture technique of weaving metal wires
around a metal frame. The spacing between the wires is
gradually widened, creating a gradation effect. A design
created through a small change to an existing technique.

Basic Skin surge de la idea de evolucionar y ampliar las
posibilidades de la silla Basic.
La idea de vestir un producto, de dotarlo de infinitas
posibilidades, adaptable a cualquier ambiente.
Basic Skin es una silla con alma de polipropileno inyectado
monobloque, apilable, tapizada de una sola pieza y
desenfundable, además preparado para el uso en el exterior.
Basic Skin stems from the idea of developing and
broadening the possibilities of the Basic chair.
The idea of dressing a product, giving it infinite possibilities,
acceptable in any environment.
Basic skin is a chair with an injected polypropylene
monoblock soul, stackable, upholstered in one detachable
piece, and is also suitable for outdoor use.

Touareg, tamiza sutilmente la luz como lo hacen las

This piece, with its standard volume and geometric,
universal and contemporary language, has a unity of
criteria. The Farol Touareg subtly filters the light, just as the
lattices that are so present in our Mediterranean culture.
