Dear Delaware Community friends and families,
The feedback has been overwhelming. Our Delaware Community School Newsletter is a huge hit with
our learning community. We have a great deal to celebrate in the June edition.
Led by our testing coordinator, Mrs. Groezinger, the students, staff and families of DCS met the new testing format dictated by the state, we had focused intensity for both the ELA and Math New York State Exams. I look forward to building on our 20+ point gains in ELA and Math over the past three school years.

We had well over 215 friends and families support our Cinco de Mayo Celebration this past month. As

always, the food and exposure to Latino culture was a treat. We were able to burn off some of those caloü This month’s theme
ries as we danced Salsa into the night.
We raised over $500.00 dollars at our Applebees Pancake Fund Raiser this past month. Thanks to all
who served and supported us at this grand event.
Our first annual Wellness Fair was supported by over 30 participants. We had vendors disseminating
wonderful information on mental health and services. The night was capped off with an hour long Zumba
workout. This was a fun way to melt away stress.
Finally, congratulations to Mr. Duncan for a wonderful article in New York Teacher, May edition. The article was titled All the Right Moves and praised this DCS Educator for his development of our all encompassing Chess Club.

Queridos amigos y familias de la comunidad de Delaware,
La reacción ha sido increíble. Nuestro boletín de noticias de la escuela de la comunidad de Delaware ha sido un gran éxito
con nuestra comunidad escolar. Tenemos mucho que celebrar en la edición de junio.
Dirigido por nuestra coordinadora de pruebas, la Sra. Groezinger, los estudiantes, el personal y las familias de DCS no sólo
logramos obtener las metas impuestas por el nuevo formato de pruebas dictado por el estado, enfocamos con intensidad
en los exámenes del arte de lenguaje en inglés (ELA) y las matemáticas del estado de Nueva York. Espero seguir trabajando en aumentar nuestros punto de ganancias de 20 + en el arte del lenguaje en inglés (ELA) y las matemáticas de los últimos tres años de escuela.
Tuvimos más de 215 amigos y familias apoyando nuestra celebración del Cinco de Mayo este pasado mes. Como siempre, la comida y la exposición a la cultura Latina fue una delicia. Pudimos quemar algunas de esas calorías cuando bailamos Salsa en la noche.
Recaudamos más de $500.00 dólares en nuestro evento de fondo de “Applebees Pancake” este mes pasado . Gracias a
todos los que sirvieron y nos apoyaron en este gran evento.
Nuestra primera Feria de Buena Salud fue apoyada por más de 30 participantes. Los proveedores de servicios diseminaron maravillosa información sobre salud mental y servicios. La noche fue capsulada con un entrenamiento de Zumba que
duró por una hora. Se trata de una forma divertida de deshacerse del estrés.
Por último, muchas felicidades al Sr. Duncan por un artículo maravilloso que aparece la edición de mayo del “New York
Teacher”. El artículo fue titulado “Todos los movimiento adecuados” y elogió a este educador de DCS por su desarrollo de
nuestro club de ajedrez.

Penny Harvest: Copper Community Kids
This year’s Copper Community Kids of the Penny Harvest
will be presenting Peppertree
Rescue and the Regional
Food Bank with $450 each

Este año los estudiantes de la Comunidad de Cobre de la Cosecha
de Centavos (Penny Harvest) presentarán un cheque de $450 al
“Peppertree Rescue” y otro al Banco Regional de Alimentos por cada
uno de los centavos recaudados por
la Cosecha de Centavos de la escuela de la comunidad de “Delaware”. En
el Programa de la Mañana del jueves,
3 de junio los estudiantes de la Comunidad de Cobre tendrán la ceremonia para presentar los cheques
(donaciones) a las dos organizaciones locales. Quisiéramos que se
unieran a nosotros durante este evento que celebra los esfuerzos de nuestra comunidad.
Friendship Garden News
What we’ve been doing:
Dug up tulip bulbs, weeded every flower bed, filled beds with soil, planted
tomatoes, onions, basil and garlic in our Pizza Garden. Planted Adirondack
Red, Yukon Gold, and Kennebec Potatoes and beans.
Mrs. Fowler spent Friday, May 21 helping Mrs. Valentine’s class plant flowers, Mrs. Myers/Spilman’s class planted cantaloupes and squash, 3rd grade
ambassadors planted a global salad, Mrs. Militello’s class learned about
composting and planted tomatoes, peppers and basil with Miss Zielenski’s
class.
We have also created a Worm Hotel for composting, and are collecting your
fruit/veggie scraps! (No orange peels please!)
Thanks to the help of community volunteers we were able to build a new
fence and a raised flower bed in front of our school!
Garden Club First Meeting
Lo que lo hemos estado haciendo:
Excavamos bulbos de los tulipanes, quitamos la hierba mala de las cajas de
flores, llenamos las cajas con tierra, sembramos tomates, cebollas, albahaca
y ajo en nuestro jardín de Pizza. Sembramos “Adirondack Red”, “Yukon
Gold” y papas de Kennebec y habichuelas.

Around Delaware Community School
Kindergarten:
Mrs. Valentine: Dual Language Program
On May 17th our class had an award ceremony. Many students received awards for counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s
to 100. They also received awards for knowing how to tie their shoes.
We have 10 butterflies in the chrysalis stage. We are very anxiously waiting for them to hatch so that we may
release them in the garden.
El 17 de mayo nuestra clase tuvo una ceremonia. Muchos de los estudiantes recibieron certificados por haber
contado de 1 en 1, 5 en 5 y 10 en 10 hasta 100. Los niños que pueden atar sus zapatos también recibieron certificados.

Mrs. Short:
Dear Parents,
May has been a very eventful month for us! We recently went on a field trip the Spectrum Theater to see the
movie Oceans. This was a wonderful opportunity for us as it connected with our literacy and science units we
recently finished studying. We also celebrated our Poetry Writing Unit last Friday with our Poetry Buddies in second grade. Students received awards for their partnership work as well as individual awards. This was a fantastic
unit of study for our class and greatly enjoyed by most students. Please take the time to read through your child’s
poetry! We are eagerly awaiting our next science project…..hatching eggs. Mrs. Valentine’s class will be hatching eggs at the end of the month and our class is going to be able to do some observations as well as learn about
the life cycle of a chicken. The eggs should hatch mid-June.
On June 22nd we will have an end of the year class celebration. This will be for kindergarten students and
parents/guardians only. The celebration will go from 10-11 and will be followed by a potluck lunch until
approximately 11:30 a.m. If you are able to help set up please let me know!
Second Grade:
Mrs. Militello: Dual Language Program
Hi everyone! We said goodbye to our newly hatched Monarch butterflies! This month we
are getting ready to say goodbye to each other. Thank you to all my parents for all your
help this year. My class was fabulous and they will be awesome students in third grade.
¡Hola a todos! ¡Nos hemos despedido de las recién nacidas mariposas Monarch! Este mes estamos preparándonos para despedirnos de uno a otro. Gracias a todos mis padres y apoderados por toda su ayuda. Mi clase fue
fabulosa y serán estudiantes maravillosos en tercer grado.

Fourth Grade:
Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Spilman’s Class
The Saratoga Battlefield visited Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Spilman's class on May 6th. Ranger Bill, from the battlefield,
had the students dress up as British and Colonial soldiers and officers. They also dressed up as camp followers
who picked through the belongings of dead soldiers to find things that could be reused by others (human recyclers!). This interesting program taught students about discipline in the armies, important events during the American Revolution, and the lives of soldiers/officers during this time. A fun time was had by all during this hands-on
exciting program that brought the American Revolution to life.

Ms. Zielenski: Dual Language Program
Miss Zielenski’s class worked hard on the NYS ELA and Math Tests - I am very proud of all the hard work that
went into a successful year! We will now begin our science experiments and our New York State PowerPoint project.

Fifth Grade:
Ms. Kelly:
The fifth grade will be participating in a mock trial at the County Courthouse on June 8th. Judge Breslin will preside. We are the prosecution and Sheridan Preparatory Academy is the defense. District Attorney Soares will be
the head of the defense. Wish us luck!!
Mrs. Whisenhunt: Dual Language Program:
On May12, the fifth grade dual-language class had a wonderful field trip. Brian Cody, DJ of Fly 92.3 invited the
class to visit the radio station. He also made sure they traveled in style. He sent a 20-seat limousine to pick them
up at the school! The students toured the station, saw how the DJs and others work, and visited several of the
sound studios. The students were also able to record one of their poems from their slam poetry. After the tour,
Mr. Cody treated the students to lunch and games at Jillian's in downtown Albany. Benji Vasquez said, "My favorite part was recording our poetry and hearing it on the radio the next day. Brian Cody sure is lucky. He gets paid
to have fun all day long!"
Mrs. Whisenhunt and her students would like to say a HUGE thank you to Brian Cody, Today's Limo and Jillian's
for this phenomenal opportunity!

Reading Recovery:
Mrs. Healy
Reading Recovery students are making great progress in First Grade! So far this year 16 students from
Mrs. Loomis, Mrs. LaFountain, and Ms. Avila'a class have worked hard to become better readers and writers. We are proud of all their hard work!

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

Our hard-working ESL students took a break from testing to do some discovery in the Friendship Garden. Second
grade students filled out their Garden Taxonomies of all they discovered. All ESL students have been diligently
working in April and May on their New York State tests. Ms. Iorio is so proud of all of them!
Keep an eye out for an International Garden with plants that represent our students’ home countries!

DCS Highlights
On Friday, May 14, Curtis Sanders, 2nd grade, served as the Assistant Principal at DCS. He assisted Mr. Giglio with his rounds and
supervision of students. Curtis earned this special privilege by completing all of his work and being a model student for a week.
El viernes, 14 de mayo, Curtis Sanders, segundo grado, sirvió como el asistente del principal en DCS. Él asistió

Pancake Breakfast
“One order of pancakes and bacon, coming up!” That's what you heard if
you participated in the PTA's pancake breakfast at the Glenmont Applebees on Saturday, May 8. Approximately 10 DCS staff, parents and students came out to help serve breakfast to our families. Not only did we
raise approximately $500, but we had a blast as well! Here are some
pictures of all the fun we had. Thanks for joining us and helping our PTA
provide terrific activities for our students. -Ms. Schiavoni

Cinco de Mayo
¡Nuestra cena del Cinco de Mayo fue un gran éxito! Tuvimos una tremenda asistensia y todos se divirtieron
mucho. Fue maravilloso ver a los padres, estudiantes y maestros de la Escuela Delaware Community gozar de
una tarde de comida, música y baile. Quisiera agradecer muchísimo a todos los que brindaron su ayuda para
que este evento sea possible.

Our Cinco de Mayo dinner was a great success! We had a tremendous turn out and everyone had a good time. It
was wonderful to see Delaware Community School parents, children and teachers enjoying an evening of food,
music, and dancing. I would really like to thank everyone for all their help in making this event possible.

Adventures in Wonderland: A Night of Science Discoveries
Coming Friday, June 11, 5:30-7:30
Get ready for a night of fun science activities at Delaware Community School. Come visit our own home-grown
Wonderland, where you’ll be able to try your hand at -and learn the science behind - making static electricity,
mixing and dividing colors, testing a substance to see if it’s an acid or base, building an electrical circuit, dissecting an owl pellet and constructing a food chain, and lots of other things.
We’d love volunteers! We need people to:
Staff the registration table
Staff the discovery/experiment stations
Staff the food area
Help with set-up and (especially) clean-up

Aventuras en el País de las Maravillas: Una noche de descubrimientos de la ciencia

Vengan a nuestro propio huerto del País de las Maravillas, en donde usted podrá intentar con sus propias manos- y aprender la ciencia envuelta -hacer electricidad estática, mezclar y dividir colores, probar una sustancia
para ver si es un ácido o una base, construir un circuito eléctrico, disecar una pelotilla y construir del búho una
cadena de alimento y muchas otras cosas.
¡Nos gustaría tener voluntarios! Necesitamos personas para:
Ayudar en la mesa de registro
Ayudar en las estaciones de descubrimiento/experimentos
Ayudar en el área de alimento
Ayudar con la organización de las estaciones y (especialmente) la limpieza
