this issue blows the horn
of a very discreet but altogether a very important resident of this beloved island:
the goat. Probably the oldest inhabitant of “modern”
Fuerteventura they get very
little attention from the suntanned tourist or from the
active surfer and many residents are not aware of the
significant contribution this
animal has made to the development of Fuerteventura
and of our culture in general.
With the set of articles in this
issue, we intend to update
you a bit on this topic.
Fuerteventura offers during
winter and spring the best
opportunities to discover the
island through hiking and biking. Have a look at our dedicated pages in this magazine

sobre un muy
discreto, pero
en conjunto, un
muy importante residente de
esta querida isla: la cabra.
Probablemente el habitante
más antiguo de la “moderna”
Fuerteventura recibe muy
poca atención de los bronceados turistas o de los activos
surfistas, y muchos de los residentes de esta isla no son
conscientes de la importante
contribución que este animal
ha hecho al desarrollo de
Fuerteventura y a nuestra cultura en general. Con el conjunto de artículos de este número,
queremos informaros un poco
sobre este tema.

Aufmerksamkeit von Seiten
der sonnenhungrigen Touristen oder der aktiven Surfer,
und viele Bewohner sind sich
des bedeutenden Beitrags
nicht bewusst, den dieses
Tier für die Entwicklung von
Fuerteventura und unserer
Kultur im Allgemeinen beigesteuert hat. Mit einem Satz

The “Cabrito
Fuerteventura” Goat:
“probably the best known
goat of the island”.
The first steps of selling goatbased products date from the
1999’s. At that time we used to
purchase our products from a
good friend. Already at the very
start the philosophy of selling the
goat-based products was to offer
a souvenir from Fuerteventura at
an acceptable price and with a
steady and proven quality.
The “Cabrito” goat was developed out of the “Fuerte” goat and
began its conquer of the island
and far beyond, with over 80 selling points, including the airport.
Starting from a portfolio of 20
products, the collection has been
constantly widened with now
over 600. An emphasis has been
laid towards the little “goat fans”.
Another initiative was to develop
an in-hose designed fashion col-

en la cabra datan de 1999.
En esa época solíamos comprar nuestros productos de
un buen amigo. Ya desde el
principio la filosofía de vender
los productos basados en la
imagen de la cabra era la de
ofrecer un souvenir de Fuerteventura a un precio aceptable
y con una calidad constante y
probada.
El diseño de “Cabrito” se desarrolló sin tener nada que
ver con el diseño de la cabra
“Fuerte” y comenzó su conquista dentro y fuera de la
isla, con más de 80 puntos de
venta, incluido el aeropuerto.
Comenzando con una cartera
de 20 productos, la colección
se ha ido ampliando constantemente hasta contar en la
actualidad con más de 600
productos. Se puso especial
énfasis hacia los pequeños
“fans de la cabra”. Otra iniciativa fue desarrollar una colección de productos diseñados
para el hogar y una colección
para “niños y bebes”.
Además Cabrito se ha convertido en un importador de la
marca “MADONNA™”, cuyos
productos se imprimen en una
empresa local.

Die Ersten Verkäufe mit Ziegenprodukten gehen in das
Jahr 1999 zurück. Damals
wurden die Produkte noch
von einem guten Freund
zugekauft. Die Philosophie
der Ziege bestand von Anbeginn darin ein Mitbringsel
der Insel Fuerteventura anzubieten und dies zu einem
annehmbaren Preis und mit
geprüfter Qualität.
Aus der “Fuerte” Ziege wurde die “Cabrito” Ziege entwickelt die sich dann damals
sehr schnell auf der Insel mit
über 80 Verkaufsstellen bis
an den Flughafen verbreitete.
Von den 20 Standardprodukten mit der Ziege wurde
das Sortiment ständig bis auf
über 600 Produkte ausgebreitet. Speziell auf unsere
Kleinen Ziegen-Fans wurde
das Augenmerk gelegt. Eine
weitere Aktivität war der Aufbau einer eigenen Kollektion
im modischen Bereich wie
auch einer eigenen Kollektion für Baby und Kind.
Zusätzlich ist Cabrito der Importeur für die Modemarke
“MADONNA™” deren Artikel
hier auf der Insel bei einem
befreundeten Unternehmen
seit vielen Jahren gedruckt
werden.

include everything that reminds
the visitor on Fuerteventura:
pens, key chains, mascots thru to
sunglasses and hats. The collection is fine tuned and developed
further through feedback from
the market. New collections are
being fine-tuned to customer’s
wishes and produced worldwide
under own management.
Nevertheless the actual unfavourable economic conditions,
Cabrito is optimistic and looks
with confidence and new business ideas into the future.
This attitude allows us to have
a realistic hope that our goat
remains for a long time the
“probably the best known goat
of the island”, also beyond
Fuerteventura.

Hoy en día la colección de
productos incluyen todo lo
que pueda recordar al visitante sobre Fuerteventura:
bolígrafos, llaveros, peluches,… hasta gafas de sol y
sombreros. La colección está
mejorada y más desarrollada
gracias a los feedbacks que
se reciben del mercado. Las
nuevas colecciones se ajustan a los deseos del cliente y
se producen en todo el mundo
bajo una gestión única.
A pesar de las desfavorables
condiciones económicas actuales, Cabrito es optimista y
mira hacia el futuro con confianza y con nuevas ideas de
negocio.
Esta actitud nos permite tener una esperanza realista
de que nuestra cabra sigua
siendo durante mucho tiempo
“probablemente la cabra más
conocida de la isla”, y también
más allá de Fuerteventura.

Sortiment wird durch Kundenbefragung immer weiter
entwickelt und verbessert.
Die jeweilige neue Kollektion
wird den Kundenwünschen
angepasst und weltweit in
Eigenregie produziert.
Trotz weltweit wirtschaftlicher Einschränkungen, sind
wir guter Dinge und blicken
mit neuen Geschäftsideen
gestärkt und zuversichtlich in
die Zukunft.
Diese Einstellung lässt uns
hoffen das unsere Ziege
noch lange „die wohl bekannteste der Insel“ bleibt,
auch weit über Fuerteventura hinaus...

Our Story:
How everything started.
1998 – on Fuerteventura, at the
edge of Corralejo, in a screen
print factory, starts the big premiere of “EXTREME ANIMALS“.
For the first time Helga Palmers
and Helmut Brittig create what
is still today “Extreme”: Extreme
honest handcraft, extreme good
quality and extremely fine products from the “Fuerteventura
Factory”, inspired by the idea to
create a very extraordinary look:
the Goat Skeleton.
The T-shirts with the Goat on
it became more and more a
popular souvenir for those who
were looking for something
original. The success of the Tshirts generated a demand for
more products with the Goat
Skeleton logo: stickers, purses,
towels, cups and soft & warm
clothing for babies and toddlers.

1998, en Fuerteventura, en un
extremo de Corralejo, en una
imprenta, empieza la gran premiere “EXTREME ANIMALS”.
Por primera vez Helga Palmers
y Helmut Brittig crean lo que hoy
es “Extreme”. Extreme, hecho a
mano de verdad, de buena calidad y con los mejores productos
de “la industria de Fuerteventura”, inspirado por la idea de crear
un look muy particular: el esqueleto de una cabra.
Las camisetas con el dibujo de
la cabra se fueron convirtiendo
en souvenirs cada vez más populares para aquellos que iban
buscando algo original. El éxito
de las camisetas generó una demanda de más productos con el
logo del Esqueleto de la Cabra:
pegatinas, carteras, toallas, tazas, y ropa para bebes y niños
pequeños. Los diseños propios
de esta empresa representan
actividades de ocio, diversión
y deportes: surf, volley-playa,
ciclismo, escalada, golf y mucho más. Nunca acabarás de

Typical
products
that you should try.
Tomatoes were cultivated
on industrial level as from
1927, mainly around Antigua
and Tiscamanita. The tomatoes from this island are considered to among the most flavoursome in Europe are used
in many renowned restaurants
on the continent.
Livestock is mainly represented by goats that thrive
almost anywhere. They are
held in high esteem for their
milk which is the basis for
the famous local goat cheese
“Queso Majorero”. It is an
absolute must to try out this
cheese. The quality is excellent and even meets world
standards. Proof of this are
the many international awards
and the officially recognised
label “Queso Majorero”.
There are 3 major classifications: “Tierno” (soft), “Semicurado” (medium-aged) and
“Curado” (aged). The taste
of the “Tierno” is very soft and
enjoyable – even to kids – and
certainly not what you expect
from a standard goat cheese
like at home. Please do yourself a favour and try them all,
beginning with the “Tierno”.
There are also variations with
peppers, Gofio, oil, etc.

principalmente en los alrededores de Antigua y Tiscamanita. Los tomates de esta

las cabras, que se alimentan
casi en cualquier lugar. Están

su leche que es la base para

local de cabra, el “Queso

Majorero
The name “Denominación
de origen Queso Majorero”
is protected by the Spanish State and by the European Union and applies to
the types of cheese that are
made of goat milk and in a
specified artisan way. The
word “Majorero” comes from
the ancient name “Maxorata”,
the name of the old kingdom
in a part of Fuerteventura.
The “Queso Majorero” is
elaborated
uniquely
on
Fuerteventura and only with
raw and/or pasteurized milk
from goats of Fuerteventura
origin, whereas for the cheeses to be cured, some addition
of max. 15% of milk from the
Canarian sheep is allowed.
The classification of quality in
order to achieve the “Denominación de Origin Protegida
(D.O.P.)” happens according
to severe and fixed criteria.
The basis of the goat cheese
obviously is goat milk. It is
taken daily from the animals,
kept cool in tanks and only
hours later transported to the
pasteurisation centre. Here
the specific additions to coagulate the milk are added.

Corralejo means “the
smallest corral” where livestock was kept. It is an ancient fishing village with a
modernised town centre. It
was the first holiday destination on Fuerteventura to be
developed and still is one of
the busiest tourist areas on
the island, during the day and
during the night. You may split
Corralejo into 3 main areas:
the Old Town with the Music
Square, Calle La Iglesia and
Muelle Chico are host to many
bars and restaurants; the centre of the town where you have
the main street with a handful
of short side streets that contain many shops, cosy bars,
fine restaurants and where
you also find the Shopping
Centres La Menara and the
new Las Palmeras; and then
the South of Corralejo where
you have last but certainly not
least, the Shopping Centre El
Campanario where they regularly have craft markets and
live music. Nightlife starts at
Shopping Centre Atlantico Sol
and surroundings (in the very
centre of town) and gradually
spreads out to the Waikiki Disco as the apotheosis.

primer destino vacacional de
Fuerteventura y sigue siendo

Fuerteventura, it does not
have the stressy business like
at home. For shopping there
is of course LAS ROTONDAS (map, F12), the commercial centre with underground parking. Somewhat
hidden in a side street is the
German bakery MIKE’S CANASTA DEL PAN (map, G14)
that will spoil you with different types of German bread,
cakes and terrines. But if you
prefer to do window shopping
in the street, then we suggest
to go strolling in the Avda 1er
de Mayo (D14 – G14) and
Avda Secundino Alonso (E13
– I13). Here you will find a
mixture of shops, bars and

HISTORY
Betancuria virtually lies in the
centre of Fuerteventura. Well
hidden, surrounded by the oldest remains of volcanic activity
on the Canary Islands.
When Jean de Béthencourt
from Normandy and his friend
knight Gadifer de la Salle set
foot on Fuerteventura at the
beach of Puerto de la Peña
(now Ajuy) in 1402, they decided to visit the barren island
and moved up with their soldiers through the barranco (dry
riverbed) towards the gorge in
the granite wall (where now the
artificial lake is) but had trouble in climbing it. Once on top,
they were astounded to see a
valley full with palm trees and
a river. At the end of this river,
su-rrounded by mountains and
thus well protected against
pirates, Jean de Béthencourt
founded the first capital of the
Canaries, Betancuria.
Please visit both sides of the
town as both do have nice surprises for you. The side of the
church offers you a nice city
walk through flower embedded
streets, old houses, restaurants
and shops like the souvenir
shop EL DIABLO and the other
side will invite you to the local
museum, the tapas bar BODEGON DON CARMELO, a souvenir shop VALTARAJAL and
the typical restaurant VALTARAJAL with very democratic
prices. Further you have a local
cheese and an Aloe Vera shop.

Cuando Juan de Béthencourt
de Normandía y su amigo el
caballero Gadifer de La Salle
pusieron el pie en Fuerteventura en la playa de Puerto de
la Peña (ahora Ajuy ) en 1402,
decidieron visitar la desolada
isla y fueron con sus soldados
a través del barranco ( lecho
seco del río) hacia el desfiladero en la pared de granito
(donde ahora está el lago artificial), pero tuvieron problemas
al escalarla. Una vez arriba, se
asombraron al ver un valle lleno de palmeras y un río. Al final
de este río, rodeada de montañas y por lo tanto bien protegida de los piratas, Jean de
Bethencourt fundó la primera
capital de Canarias, Betancuria

Whenever you decide to discover the beautiful spots on
this island, whether it is on
the shore or inland, you may
have a reasonable chance
to encounter free-walking
goats, in herds or alone,
searching for the scarce vegetation that represents their
daily meal. You might then
think of these creatures that
they “just fill in the local picture” and – if you are lucky
– you might be able to take
some nice pictures of them
for at home. But do you realise that these animals were
fundamental in the development of Fuerteventura and
even to the development of
mankind in general? No?
Well let me tell you a bit
“Goaty Stuff”…

describe this species as a
wild form of the domestic
goat which runs at a high
speed, despite its set of
impressive horns. More recently the Capra Ibex had to
come up against decimation
due to hunting, food competition and diseases spread

la cabra es usando la carne del
cabrito, marinándolo y haciendo
un suculento estofado, o asándolo
al horno muy lentamente con algunas hierbas. Si decides disfrutar
de una sabrosa carne de cabra en
un restaurante, se recomienda reservar este tipo de platos con ante-

quiet side street. However,
the “amusement-avenue” of
Morro Jable and the wide
sandy beach are only a couple of minutes of walking

hotel are the restaurant and

lateral. Sin embargo, la avenida principal de Morro Jable
y la amplia playa de arena
blanca sólo se encuentran
aun un par de minutos a pie

can be seen from dark places
in Fuerteventura and the northern hemisphere. Most of the
astronomical events on this
calendar can be seen with unaided eye, although some may
require a good pair of binoculars for best viewing. Many of
these events and dates used
here were obtained from the
U.S. Naval Observatory, the
NASA/Goddard Space Flight
Center. Times are given in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
which corresponds to the local
