St. Stephen Protomartyr Church Des Plaines, IL www.ststephendp.org 847-824-2026 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph ~ December 28, 2014 First Friday Adoration January 2, 2015 3-7pm Primer Viernes de Adoración 2 de Enero 3-7pm Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia 28 de Diciembre del 2014 Christmastide 2014 Tiempo de Navidad 2014 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Stephen Parish, Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Parroquia San Esteban, May the blessings of Christmas mysteries remain with you and your family members! I am sure that we could agree at one point that our Christmas celebrations were colored with memories of the past. Our childhood encounter with Santa, our family dinner on Christmas Eve, the gift that we got from one of our classmates, an unexpected visit from a family member, and so on and so forth. We have plenty of those memories that left an imprint in our mind that allow us to associate Christmas with something. Surely there is also nostalgia of the past, a longing that is embedded in our hearts, a wish to go back to those childhood Christmas memories – simply because Christmas is about finding the deeper meaning of that sacred event during our encounter of God’s Incarnate Son through other people. Our commemoration of the mysteries of the Birth of Jesus Christ enveloped the meaning of our Christian identity. With that said, our focus should also be towards the One who is the reason of the celebration. It is easy to be caught up in the middle of busy-ness and business of shopping, gift giving, raffle winning, parties, etc. I would say that they are not bad nor events and things that we should totally avoid. Rather, it is the regulation of our participation that matters. In addition, it is also important that we show appreciation to those people who are dear to us through gift giving, surprise visits, a phone call; but most importantly by praying for them. As we continue to celebrate Christmas during the coming days, I would like to invite our parish to consider going back to your most recent Christmas day encounters. Who were the people that gave you the joy of Christ’s mystery? How did you respond to that encounter? Was this meeting a life changing experience for you so much so that the Incarnation of the Son of God was indeed a life changing event for the whole world? Let the Holy Family of Nazareth be our model in responding to God’s revelation each day of our lives. They showed us in the humblest and sincerest way a deeper meaning of Christmas celebration. I wish you peace. Fr. Noel Les deseo paz.
