Changes are coming
to the NOHS Guidance Department
starting with the
2014/2015 school year.
Mrs. Grady will no longer be
working at NOHS. Instead,
she will be working with our
younger students at Butternut
School and Chestnut School.
We wish her well in her new role,
and will miss her greatly. Our loss
is certainly Butternut and Chestnut’s gain.
As a result of this change, we are
going to reconfigure the NOHS
Guidance Office. We will have
four counselors, and they will each
be assigned grade levels instead of
an alphabet assignment. The plan
is for the counselors to advance
through the grade levels with the
students. Thus, if you are a freshman, you will have the same counselor for four years, and so forth.
PSEOP
Students in the Post-Secondary
Education Options Program are
responsible for completing the
required admission and registration process. Students must make
an appointment with a counselor
and bring a copy of their college
schedule to the Guidance office.
Counselors will then change students’ NOHS schedule based on
their college schedule. Seniors
must carry a minimum of 5 credits
for the school year.
Schedule Changes
Class changes will only be made if
faculty believes that the placement
is incorrect. Changes will not be
made because a student has
changed his/her mind.
If you enroll in a class, you must
remain in that class.
Once a schedule is submitted and accepted, it can only be changed without academic consequences under the following
circumstances:
1: Academic misplacement as determined and initiated by the teacher
2: A graduation requirement is needed
3: Failure in a prerequisite class
4: Study Hall is dropped to add a class
5: A technical error or an obvious mistake
6: A health issue, requiring documentation by a physician
Freshman will receive their schedules
at orientation on August 14.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors will
receive their schedules on the first day of
school on August 21. If there is an error,
come to the Guidance office during your
lunch or study hall to make an appointment to have it resolved. If you do not
have a lunch on your schedule, and you
expected to have a lunch, come to the
Guidance office immediately.
Class Failure
Any student who failed a class that is
required for graduation must make up
that credit. Options include summer
school American School of Correspondence or APEX. Meet with a counselor to
discuss your options.
Don’t forget to
complete your
summer reading!

Helping Students SOAR With New Daily Schedule
These changes will take
effect starting with the
2014/2015 school year.
North Olmsted High School will adjust the starting and ending times of
our student day to help our students achieve even more success.
The primary goals of the schedule
remain providing the best instruction possible in our allotted time,
giving the students access to the
teachers for assistance outside of
the normal classroom hours, and
giving our teachers time to work
and plan together on behalf of the
students. Hopefully the new schedule will be a rousing success.

What are the changes at the High School?
The High School instructional day will start at 8:00 a.m. Since students must be in their first period classes at 8:00 a.m., they
should plan on arriving at school no later than 7:50 a.m. so they
are not late for first period. The instructional day begins forty
minutes later than last year. The instructional day will end at
3:15 p.m. which is 45 minutes later than last year. These important changes must be planned for.
The very successful SOAR period (Student Opportunity for Academic Reinforcement) returns again, but it will now take place before daily instruction begins. Every Monday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:25 a.m. to 7:55 a.m., teachers will be
available for students for academic assistance, as they hold regular “ teacher office hours.” Students are strongly encouraged to
use this time to get any extra help they need in their classes, but
attendance is not mandatory.
What are the benefits of the changes to the start and end times of
the high school?
The changes to the school day will allow for students to still have
access to the teachers for SOAR, and will also allow for a later
start to instruction, which we feel will be very beneficial to the students. The changes will also help us continue to respond to the
increased academic expectations for our students as expected by
the Oho Common Core Standards. Any changes we make are
made for the benefit of the students. We hope these changes will
make the academic success of our students be even greater.

SOAR PERIOD AT NORTH OLMSTED HIGH SCHOOL
What is it?
The SOAR period
(Student Opportunity for Academic Reinforcement) is an opportunity for students
to meet with their teachers and school
staff between 7:25 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. for
academic help, tutoring, enrichment, and
further understanding of the content that
was covered during the school day. The
regular school day begins at 8:00 a.m.
daily. SOAR takes place before first period instruction.
Does the SOAR period take
place every day? SOAR will be
available for all students Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday between 7:25 a.m.—7:55 a.m.
How does my child take part?
Each teacher will send home information
as to where they will be specifically for
SOAR. Think of SOAR as “Office Hours”
for teachers; a time set aside so teachers can meet with students who may
need some additional academic help.
Students do not need to make appointments, but are encouraged to let teachers know during the day if they are attending SOAR.
Who should participate?
Is
SOAR mandatory? All students
have the option to attend SOAR with any
of their teachers on the days SOAR
meets. If a student is behind in his/her
studies or has grades of C’s or below, or
if they were absent and missed instruction or an assessment, they certainly
should be attending SOAR regularly.
Why does SOAR not meet on Tuesday? The teachers will use Tuesday’s for professional collaboration and development that is necessary as we move into the Common Core Curriculum. Individual appointments can be made with
teachers if a Tuesday conflict arises.
What about Clubs and Activities?
When will they meet? There are a wide variety of clubs and activities for students at NOHS,
and they are very important to us. Clubs can meet
between 6:45 a.m.—7:25 a.m. every day, after
3:15 every day, and can also meet on a limited basis between 7:25 a.m. and 7:55 a.m.
What about Athletics? Most athletic practices and activities will begin after the instructional
day has ended at 3:15 p.m. We are strongly encouraging all in-season athletes to participate in
athletic study tables sponsored by their head
coaches each day between 7:25 a.m. and
7:55a.m., (except for Tuesday’s.) Parents can excuse the student athlete from the study table if they
desire.
Is there a location for my child if he/
she wants to come to school early but
does not want to attend SOAR? Yes. All
students can report to the school cafeteria before
school.
What about R.T.A? The R.T.A. pick up of
students will be based from the 3:15 p.m.
timeframe. RTA will drop NOHS students off,
same as last year, at 7:10 a.m., and will leave
NOHS in the afternoon at 3:25 p.m., which is 45
minutes later than last year.

Link Crew and Freshman Orientation
North Olmsted High
School Link Crew is a
transition program
that welcomes freshmen and makes them
feel comfortable
throughout the first
year of their high
school experience.
Built on the belief that
students can help students succeed, Link
Crew trains members
of the junior and senior classes to be Link
Leaders. As positive
role models, Link
Leaders are motivators, leaders and
teachers who guide
freshmen to discover
what it takes to be
successful during
the transition to high
school and help facilitate freshman success.
More and more studies show that if students have a positive
experience their first
year in high school,
their chance for success increases dramatically. The Link
Crew high school transition program provides the structure for
freshmen to receive
support and guidance from juniors
and seniors who
have been through
the challenges that
high school poses,
and understand that
the transition to a

sometimes be overwhelming.

Summer
As you clean out your
school supplies and materials from this past
year, please don’t throw
away your school ID
card. It will be valid until
your new card arrives in
late September. Beside
being used for identification purposes at school
events, your school ID is
your library card, which
allows you to sign out
materials and sign in
from a study hall. In addition, your card may
one day be a cherished
keepsake of your days at
NOHS.
When you head out to buy
school supplies in August,
don’t forget to pick up one
of those handy USB drives.
These small portable flash
memory sticks plug into the
USB port of computers and
may be called thumb, pen,
key, or quick. Invest a portion of your summer job
money in a tool that will
come in handy all school
year for saving and transferring files.
