Hungering for a Season of Hope
The next stop on our CRS Rice Bowl journey is the
African nation, Niger, where we’re reminded that life’s
joys and challenges are often seasonal.
This week we pray for people who struggle to feed
their families during the hungry season—when food is
in short supply—and we commit to
acting for the common good.
Next weekend, March 14/15,
our parish will join with Catholic
parishes across country to take up
the annual Catholic Relief Services
Collection. This special national
collection helps to support the U.S. Catholic
community's international social ministry carried out
in our name by six national Catholic agencies, including
Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Migration and
Refugee Services, United States Bishops Justice, Peace
and Human Development Ministry, and the Holy
Father's Relief Fund. Thank you in advance for your
generosity!

Father Joe’s Week: Last Thursday Frs. McKenna &
Forni, and I went to Applebee’s for lunch and then to
see USA McFarland. It was the best movie I’ve seen in a
long while. The story is about a High School coach and
his team, but it is really about what it is like to be a
Mexican-American family negotiating one’s way
through the American scene. I loved the movie and
encourage everyone to see it. The message would be
beyond the SpongeBob set, but the rest of the family
should see it…Friday, after stations, I entertained
several College students for supper. We had Tuna
Noodle Casserole, with a classic recipe. Every ounce
was scraped from the glass bowl, and with a salad and
dessert, we had a fine meal. Good conversation, too…
Saturday morning we had our penance service,
attended by about 25. Thanks to musicians and lectors
for their help, and to the priests of the area. We are all
helping each other with confessions, such a blessing for
all our parishes…That afternoon I had an appointment
with a family, welcoming them into the parish and
planning for initiation. This is the second family I’ve
met with recently, joining the parish and arranging to
instruct and initiate children of various ages…After the
Spanish Mass on Sunday we had a feast at the Collins
House. The community will continue to gather after
Mass every week. It’s great to have the constant
presence of Jorge Salgado leading the community, and
the great volunteer spirit. It’s a joy to serve this part of
our parish, and I am grateful for their patience with my
language skills…Sunday afternoon I was called to Bev
Ruggles’s home on the death of her husband Leonard. I
met with Bev and her daughters to comfort them at
Leonard’s death, and begin planning for his funeral. I
like to go to the family home right away, if I can.
Sometimes I will meet with the family at the funeral
home as they are making arrangements—just as early
as possible in the process…Monday afternoon I was
called to anoint a parishioner at home. The Hospice
service contacted me and I went over to the home for a
visit and prayer…That evening our RCIA saw a video on
the Eucharist…Tuesday I went back to the Ruggles
home to finalize plans for the funeral. We have a packet
so families can choose the readings, etc. They
graciously sent me some information on Leonard to
help me prepare to preach at the funeral, always
helpful…We cancelled programs Tuesday evening due
to the weather…Wednesday our Finance council met to
review the latest numbers—all of which is on track.
Thanks for their help and guidance…Wednesday
afternoon I went to Fowlers to join the Ruggles family
for visitation and the service. Afterwards we went to 58
Main for supper and conversation…God bless and have
a good week!

Four senior high teens were given the Hands of
Christ award this past Tuesday, March 3rd by Bishop
Matano at St. Jude’s Church. These teens: Luke
Bamburoski, Amanda Burgio, Alahna
Grady, and Megan Smith, ha v e noticea bly
shown Christian attitudes in their daily lives. We will
recognize them at Nativity the weekend of March 14/15.
Please join them in their celebration and pray for their
continued journey in the Catholic Faith.
Living Stations of the Cross Practice this
Sunday, March 8th are from 3:00 – 7:00 pm
at Nativity in the Church & Parish Center. We
are still in need of a few hands to assist in
the preparation and presentation. We need
musicians, stage hands and a narrator. Any
younger adults that can help??? This time will
allow for practice, dinner together and some
social time.
Attention all current 8th – 11th Graders
The Diocese of Rochester has a tradition of sending young people
to the National Catholic Youth Conference. It’s not often that we
wander away from our own parish to celebrate our Liturgy with
people from different places. NCYC offers young people the chance
to experience the “Big Church” – at least within the United States.
Not that many adults get to worship on this level…and let me tell
you it’s awesome! An information meeting for any teen or adult
interested is Sunday, March 15th after Mass. Meet Lisa O’Brien
at the back of the Church by the bulletin board. Visit http://
youth.dor.org/ncyc/ to preview this wonderful gathering.
For all 6th – 8th graders! Be Not Afraid The Fear Factor
Junior High Retreat Day
Saturday, March 21st from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Join other teens in the Rochester area for faith, food, fun and
friends.
Fee is $25 and will be held at Holy Trinity Parish on 1460 Ridge
Road in Webster.
Contact Lisa O’Brien, Youth Minister, at 503-7632 or
[email protected] for any questions about the above events.
“Praying Deeper”
Come join us this Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm at Nativity BVM Parish Center for “Praying
Deeper,” a chance to learn how to open yourself to God’s grace through meditation. This week we
will be learning about “Lectio Divina” a way of praying the scriptures. Literally meaning “Reading
for the Divine” this way of praying leads us into the deeper meaning of the Bible for us, and helps us to not only read
the Bible, but also pray the Bible. There will be an instruction and questions, followed by an opportunity to practice
this style of prayer. Come and learn how to pray deeper.

Nativity’s Final CMA Report
As of Tuesday, we had 268 parishioners
total pledging $55,596.00 which is
140.01% of our goal of $39,710.00. We
reached 98% of our goal of 270 parishioners/
households participating in the CMA. At this time we
remind you to pay on your pledge, if you haven’t done
so already. Half of all CMA pledges over our goal
come back to the parish!
Thank you to all who have participated!
Paul reminded the Corinthians, "We proclaim
Christ crucified." Christ's weakness is stronger than
any human strength. The power of the cross is
greater than anything the world or evil has to combat
it.
The Lenten season is one of repentance, selfdenial, almsgiving, and prayer. Many in our modern
world do not see any wisdom in denying themselves
anything. Those swept away in a consumer culture
want more and they want it faster, bigger, and better.
They also are looking for easy and quick satisfaction,
unwilling
to
wait
long.
Paul speaks of the "foolishness of God" and how
it is wiser than any human wisdom. Lent is a time to
put aside that which we feel and think as humans
and put on the attitude of Christ. The cross of Christ
is neither easy nor fleeting, and it will ask us to deny
our very selves for him. To the human mind it makes
no sense. However, by putting on Christ and seeing
with his eyes, we see reality with clarity. Our sacrifice
can lead to riches that only a "foolish" man would
covet. But it is exactly there that we are satisfied and
fulfilled.
