Padre Richard Zajac Derechos de autor © 2012, World Library Publications. Todos los derechos reservados. MISAS EN ESPAÑOL: SÁBADO 7:00PM Y DOMINGO A LA 1:00PM - AÑO DE LA FE Third Sunday of Lent Page 10 March 3, 2013 SCRUTINIES: EXAMINING OUR LIVES The primary way that the Church assists the catechumens (called the elect after the celebration of the Rite of Election on the First Sunday of Lent) in this conversion process during Lent is through the celebration of the rites called Scrutinies. These ritual celebrations on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent are communal prayers celebrated around the elect to strengthen them to overcome the power of sin in their lives and to grow in virtue. To scrutinize something means to examine it closely. The community does not scrutinize the catechumens; the catechumens scrutinize their own lives and allow God to scrutinize them and to heal them. There is a danger in celebrating the Scrutinies if the community thinks of the elect as the only sinners in our midst who need conversion. All of us are called to continuing conversion throughout our lives, so we join with the elect in scrutinizing our own lives and praying to God for the grace to overcome the power of sin that still infects our hearts. . . . . . . .Taking seriously this dynamic of scrutiny and conversion gives us a richer perspective on Lenten "giving up." What we are to give up more than anything else is sin, which is to say we are to give up whatever keeps us from living out our baptismal promises fully. Along with the elect we all need to approach the season of Lent asking ourselves what needs to change in our lives if we are to live the gospel values that Jesus taught us. Our journey through these forty days should be a movement ever closer to Christ and to the way of life he has exemplified for us. (www.americancatholic.org) REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD One morning in 1888, Alfred Nobel, the man who invented dynamite, picked up the morning newspaper and, to his shock, read an account of his death. The reporter had made a mistake; it was his cousin, not he, who had died. In reading his own obituary, Alfred Nobel realized just how he would be recognized and remembered should he die. He would be the “dynamite king,” a merchant of death. This so disturbed and upset Nobel that he decided to give his life a new direction. He became involved in the work of peace and justice and made it a point to ensure that money was set aside so an annual award could be given to those engaged in that important work. So when Alfred Nobel died, his obituary made no mention of his being a merchant of death. He was hailed instead for his humanitarian deeds, especially the establishment of the Nobel Peace Prize. You could say that the mistake in 1888 gave Alfred Nobel a second chance at life. As a result, the world was awarded a wonderful legacy. For the Ride Home SCRIPTURE • Strike the rock and the water will flow from it. (Exodus 17:6) • let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation. (Psalm 95:1) • the love of God has been poured out into our hearts (Romans 5:5) • only with difficulty does one die for a just person … But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:7) • the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (John 4:14) REFLECTION • What is your thirst that cannot be quenched? • Is your hope for an answer found in a physical thing or activity? • Compare dying of thirst in the desert with dying of thirst in a culture overrun with entertainment and diversions - which is worse? • Is the “water” of John 4 the grace that God gives through a sacrament? Are you a sacrament for others? • How are you able to die to self for another? —Rev. Richard Zajac LIVING GOD’S WORD The Gospel today unfolds the parable of the fig tree, often described as the parable of the second chance. The owner of the vineyard wants it cut down. The vinedresser pleads that it be given a second chance. Great and wonderful results can often accompany a second chance. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. STRENGTH TO SPLIT ROCKS Do you know that oftentimes a root has split a rock, when suffered to remain in it? Give no judgment to the seed of evil, seeing that it will break up your faith. —St. Cyril of Jerusalem March 3, 2013 Jesus became a sacrament for me, the cause of my salvation, he brought my time in hell to an end, and put a stop to my inner disintegration. He washed my patiently in the waters of salvation, He filled me with the exhilarating joy of the Holy Spirit in confirmation, he nourished me with the bread of his word. Above all, he forgave me, he forgot everything, he did not even wish me to remember my past self.1 1Carretto, Carlo, In Search of the Beyond, Image Books of Doubleday, New York, 1978, p. 64.
