The news about the economy can be terribly alarming. A great sense of insecurity about the future is created when you consider that there is no job security, that the price of gasoline, food, and everything else continues to escalate, and that mortgages continue to be at risk. To live with such insecurity or to be convinced that you do not have enough can create a mindset of scarcity and lack, and such thinking can prevent us from doing many things. Initiatives can be paralyzed when faced with the insecurity of lacking the necessary resources. It could clip the wings of many young people who would think that because there is no money, they cannot achieve their dreams and objectives. It could furthermore immobilize solidarity and charity: since there are insufficient funds for everyone, we must save them for ourselves. Today’s readings present a very different panorama. In the world of God abundance is everything; the Philippians cared for the needs of other churches; the king set out a grand banquet where everyone is included. To attend the feast it is not necessary to be materially rich, have a title or possess grand properties. What’s more, if these things occupy the mind and heart, it can impede a person from responding to the call of the king. If our businesses or caring for properties take up so much time, then you cannot attend the feast because there isn’t sufficient time. The only thing needed is good clothes. And what type of clothing is necessary to attend God’s banquet? Possibly the clothing of generosity; of expanding the heart and spreading joy no matter what is happening; of trust in God, and in the security of his call. To arrive with shameful concerns, envying what others may have, criticizing what others do, and with a smallness of heart would probably lead to a closed door and denied access. To attend with the best disposition of living in the Reign of God, as he desires, will open all the doors of abundance of His grace, love and joy, even if we don’t have a single dollar in our pocket. For Reflection What concerns me the most at this moment? Are materials concerns taking up a great deal of space in my heart? Am I capable of living the grace and joy of God’s generosity toward me? Do You Have Spare Time? The crew that cleans the church needs your help on Fridays. For more info Call the parish office 815-625-0640. St. Vincent’s Office Hours: Monday-Wed., Thurs., Fri. 1-2:45p.m. Tuesdays: 1-2:45pm & 5-7pm Sunday, October 9, 2011 I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances, I know also how to live with abundance...I can do all things in him who strengthens me. -Philippians 4:12-13 These words from Paul contrast rather drastically with the ethics of our Western consumer society, which might rewrite them like this: “I will do any thing to avoid being poor and make every effort to become rich. I can master anything at all, and all in my own strength.” Will we have the courage to try Paul’s way, now that our own ways have proved so disastrous?
