Let us look to Him! This gives us so much strength and consolation in our weaknesses, in our misery and in our difficulties. We all have difficulties, all of us… Looking at Jesus we see He chose the path of humility and service. Rather, He Himself is the path. Jesus was not indecisive; He was not indifferent. He made a decision and followed it through until the end. He decided to become man and as a man to become a servant until his death on the cross. This is the way of love, there is no other… This word solidarity runs the risk of being deleted from the dictionary because it is a Word that bothers us, it bothers us. Why? Because it requires you to look at another and give yourself to another with love… And we want to take this path. Christ’s humility is not moralism or a feeling. Christ humility is real; it is the choice of being small, of staying with the lowliest and with the marginalized, staying among all of us sinners. Be careful, this is not an ideology! It is a way of being and away of life that comes from love and from God’s heart… Jesus is the path, and the path is for walking and following… We cannot follow Jesus on the path of love unless we first love others, unless we force ourselves to work together, to understand each other and forgive each other, recognizing our own limits and mistakes. We must do works of mercy and with mercy! Putting our hearts in them. Works of charity with love, with tenderness, and always with humility!... Therefore, following Jesus on the path of charity, going with him to the existential outskirts… For the Good Shepherd what is far, what is on the margins, what is lost and unappreciated is the object of great care, and the Church cannot but make her own this special love and attention. The first in the Church are those who are the most in need, humanly, spiritually, materially, the neediest. JEROME (340-420) SEPTEMBER 30: Patron Saint of biblical studies and Doctor of the Church. Jerome was born in Dalmatia (Bosnia), the son of a noble and rich family. His name means "he who has a sacred name". He studied in Rome and became acquainted with poets, speakers, classical Greek and Latin authors. When he was around 20 years old, he became friends with Christians and received the sacrament of Baptism. During those years there was a crisis in his life. Renouncing his career, which gave him worldly glory, he became a monk and writer. He went to the desert to do penance for his sins, especially his sensuality, his terrible temper and great pride. He overcame this crisis, and he was ordained as a priest at 34 years of age. Returning to Rome, Pope Saint Damaso appointed him as his secretary and then asked him to translate the Bible. The translations of the Bible that existed at that time had many imperfections of language and several inaccuracies in translations. Jerome, who wrote with great elegance in Latin and knew Hebrew and Greek very well, translated the entire Bible into Latin. This translation, called "Vulgate" (or translation for the people), was the official Bible of the Catholic Church for 15 centuries. Jerome died in the monastery of Bethlehem on September 30 of the year 420, at 80 years of age. Message continues in next page TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page # 3 September 27, 2015 The Catholic Church has always recognized Saint Jerome as a man chosen by God, who understood and explained the Bible, so he was named patron of all who are dedicated to understanding and loving the Scriptures. His famous phrase is repeated throughout the world: "To ignore the Scriptures is to ignore Christ". Fortunate Families, a national resource and networking ministry, was developed in response to the pastoral message from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Always Our Children 1997”, to help family members address the topic of sexual orientation. One way to accomplish this goal is to talk to people who have lived a similar experience. The Listening Parents Network (LPN) was created by Fortunate Families to provide this listening opportunity. Please go to: www.fortunatefamilies.com for more information. St. Mary’s local contacts are: Russ and Genie Calkins 331-7941 or genieac@ hotmail.com.
