The grading system will be based on two categories: 2 GRADE CATEGORIES SUMMATIVE – 80% Playing/written tests and practice records are used to show mastery of the state music TEKS. They cover all aspects of musical proficiency and performance and are performed in class except for Honor Band. Symphonic may have some grades in sectionals Honor Band playing tests are performed during sectionals. If there is an unexcused absence, it can be made up before or after school with a maximum grade of 70 per IISD policy. Performances – All co-curricular performances are required and two grades are earned. 1. Etiquette grade – ready to play on time, dressed appropriately and concert etiquette as set by Bowie standards that support the TEKS & Irving Fine Arts standards. 2. Playing grade - your individual effort in playing to help make the performance a success. An unexcused missed performance requires a Missed Performance assignment for the Etiquette grade. If you have been selected to play FLUTE, CLARINET, ALTO SAX, TRUMPET or TROMBONE, it is highly encouraged to obtain you own instrument. The enjoyment and care will be highly enhanced with the feeling of your own personal instrument. They are surprisingly affordable, with costs ranging from $30-$50/month. I love ice cream! However, if my grocery store only carries ice-cream, I’m not going to shop there. Luckily, they have a smart manager that carefully selects the number of each product they need in order to be successful to the most customers. For students that cannot afford their own, there are school instruments available but you are not guaranteed your 1st choice of instrument. If you already own an instrument, or access to one from a friend or relative, WE MUST be allowed to inspect it first. If you have been selected to play OBOE, BASSOON, BASS CLARINET, TENOR SAX, BARI SAX, FRENCH HORN, EUPHONIUM or TUBA, you will play a school instrument. A band is no different. Whatever your favorite instrument is, you’re not going to have much of an audience or opportunity to succeed if the band is too full of that one instrument. NO BOWIE BAND STUDENT will be without an instrument due to finances. If money is a problem, we will work with you in every possible way to obtain a quality instrument for every student. The directors have many years of experience and success, in helping to determine the type of instrument that each student will be the most successful. There are many factors and variables that help determine what is best for the student and for the Bowie Band as a whole. CONTACT INFO The most efficient way to contact us is by e-mail. Dr. King, Irving Fine Arts Director, will interview, audition and screen local musicians to teach in Irving schools. The visual impression we make at a performance is very important. It is imperative for all students to look and act their best. We have two looks: formal performance attire and casual performance attire. These are professional teachers/musicians that specialize on one particular instrument. This is in contrast to a band director that specializes in general knowledge of all instruments. Think of your family doctor and a heart specialist. FORMAL: For formal performance attire: It is the same as last year. Guys will need to purchase BLACK DRESS pants, black dress shoes and socks. We will furnish the rest. Girls will purchase black dress shoes. Lessons are once a week for 30 minutes. The district rate for private teachers is $16 for one lesson. There is assistance if you need help. Other than parent involvement, there is no other program available that will greater assist your child’s progress. Band class is a time for ensemble skills, learning blend, balance, tuning and many other skills. Private lessons allow the time for a professional musician to focus on their individual needs like embouchure, tone production, technique, musicianship and solo literature. Lessons can also be taught in pairs or small groups to help make it more affordable. CASUAL: Our casual performance attire will be for all other performances and spirit days. We wear our Bowie Band shirts (tucked in), khaki pants and tennis shoes. The cost is $16.00 each. Those students not dressed accordingly will be excluded from performing and receive the penalties for nonperformance. PARENTS Do you want to show your support? You may purchase shirts to show off for your child and for the BOWIE BAND! Save $ by paying fees on time! See page 7 for details. Private Lesson & Uniform/Shirt orders are all on pg. 11 Bowie Middle School 2015-2016 Bowie Band Handbook Pg. 5 BOWIE BAND CALENDAR 2015-2016 DATE ............................................EVENT........................................... We are fortunate to be in the Irving ISD where they can provide many fine instruments. Most districts do not do this and because of that, and have extra money to run other programs like private lessons, travel, supplies, expensive trips, etc. ALL STUDENTS WILL PAY A BAND FEE OF $40 This helps cover cost for; Band activities/Transportation Equipment Provide supplies Help pay for clinicians Help provide private teachers Nice spring trip! There are many options to pay these fees. We will ALWAYS work with you if finances are a problem. The band fee is due September 11th. You have the option of paying $20 the fall semester and then $20 for the spring semester. You can also pay in any amounts that are affordable to you. For example, you could pay $5 a month and you would have it paid off by March. There are incentives if you pay on time! Pay $40 by September 11th FREE SHIRT SUPPLIES 50% TRIP DISCOUNT Pay $40 by October 9th FREE SHIRT SOME SUPPLIES 10% TRIP DISCOUNT Pay $20 by September 11th FREE SHIRT BASIC SUPPLY NO TRIP DISCOUNT Beginners will get a music book and a Bowie Band shirt. 7th & 8th grade get a new Bowie Band t-shirt OR a Bowie Band shirt if they need a new one. Bowie Middle School 2015-2016 Bowie Band Handbook Pg. 7 BOWIE BAND TRIPS All Bowie Bands have traditionally gone on a spring band trip each year in April or May. While we are serious about fun, we also are serious in our playing. We participate in a band competition at each of these events. The Beginner Band goes to the Pin Stack Contest in Plano. We have been going there the past 3 years and the kids really enjoy this trip. The base cost for this varies each year but usually is around $25. The 7th & 8th grade bands have gone to NRH2O the last 4 years. This is a great events and we have brought back many trophies from this contest. The base cost of the trip varies each year, but is usually around $25. The differences are determined by the success of our fundraisers and the number of students going. More details will be given later, but there are conditions each student has to meet in order to go. Be eligible – No Pass, No Play! A/B citizenship grade in band. Present at all required band performances. Pass off all music No more than 50 discipline points, DISCIPLINE POINTS – This keeps more students from going than anything. There will be more details later on discipline points. Basically, I keep track of the number of detentions, tardy referrals and office deferrals in ALL classes. You are assigned points for each infraction. If you go over 50 points, you are not allowed to go on the trip. That’s the bad news – GOOD NEWS? You can work off these points by doing extra work in the bandhall assigned by the directors. COOPERATE & DON’T BE LATE!
