From the Desk of the Principal........
Dear Grenadier Parents: I hope you are keeping warm and that you had a peaceful holiday season. It is with pleasure that I share these updates with you! First, it is important that you read the student assessment update contained within this newsletter. Some of our assessments will be different from those of past years, and we want you to be familiar with the schedule so that you can help your student do his/her very best on the upcoming exams. I am excited to inform you that over 95% of our Freshman Class, over 500 students have applied for the Harper Promise Program, which can provide up to 2 FREE years of college tuition to students who meet criteria in the areas of grades, public service, and attendance. This amazing opportunity is yet another reason why EGHS and District 214 are a great place to be! Our Theater Department just earned one of the most prestigious honors in the State of Illinois, as our Fall Play She Kills Monsters was selected as a featured performance at the Illinois Theater Fest. Over 50 students and staff traveled to Illinois State University to perform the play in front of more than 1,000 spectators. Their performance was truly remarkable, and our show was one of the most celebrated events of the entire weekend! Our Marching Band received some very exciting news in November, as it was selected as the only representative from Illinois in the National Independence Day Parade on July 4 in Washington, D. C. Senator Dick Durbin recorded and shared a personal message with our students during EGHS’s annual Veterans Day Assembly. This will mark the first time the Marching Grenadiers have participated in a Washington, D. C. parade, and it will certainly make for an exciting summer for our band members and families. During this year’s Elk Grove High School Food Drive alone, over 40,000 cans of food were collected by our students and staff. This total once again shattered the previous school record and made a difference in the lives of many in our community and beyond. The service and selflessness shown by our EG Nation is always incredible, but we have attained a level that was previously thought impossible. Once again the Elk Grove High School yearbook, Montage, received First Place from the American Scholastic Press Association. We are looking forward to inviting the Class of 2020 into the fold very soon, and we know that they will uphold the legacy of quality that has been established. Have a wonderful winter! All the best to you and your families. Sincerely, Paul Kelly Principal EGHS Parent Newsletter

Sinceramente, Paul Kelly Director EGHS Parent Newsletter

Spring 2016 Testing Schedule February 24, 2016 Freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9 test during periods 1-‐5 and return to class for periods 6-‐8. April 5 & 6, 2016 April 19, 2016 Students currently enrolled in Algebra 63 and Algebra 71 will take the State-‐Mandated PARCC Math test on one of these days. Juniors will take the District ACT. This administration is paid for by the school district; students will complete the registration in school. The results of this ACT test are accepted by colleges and universities to meet admission requirements. The ACT Exam is a high stakes assessment because: 1. The ACT is used by colleges in screening applicants. 2. The ACT may be submitted for scholarship competition. 3. The results may be used for student placement in classes and remediation. Therefore, test conditions must be standard and fair to all students. Two major points should be considered by students and parents alike: 1. Students who arrive late for testing will not be allowed to test that day. Parents will be notified, and students will be sent home. They will be required to take the make-‐up on May 3rd. 2. Any impropriety in testing, ie. cheating, finishing the test in an excessively short time, or verbal disruption will require that the student be dismissed with no opportunity for make-‐up. Please note – Most Illinois colleges do not require students to submit an ACT Writing score, however, if your student intends to apply to a college that requires Writing, he/she will have to register for an additional National ACT, as the in-‐district ACT will not include Writing. Sophomores will take the PSAT 10 test. Students currently enrolled in Written and Oral Com (most freshmen) will take the first two units of the State-‐Mandated PARCC English/Language Arts test. Testing will begin at 8:10 a.m. for Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. Information regarding Senior activities on April 19th will be announced at a later date. April 21, 2016 Students currently enrolled in Written and Oral Com (most freshmen) will take the final unit of the State-‐Mandated PARCC English/Language Arts test periods 1-‐3 and return to class periods 4-‐8. 3rd Quarter - January 2016
Eating Disorders:
Have you ever been on a diet? If your answer is yes, you are one of the vast majority of Americans who tries to change their weight through lowering their caloric intake. (If your diet failed you, you are in the majority again: 95% of diets fail). When health is at risk due to severe excess weight, a change can be prudent. However, most dieters are trying only to change their looks—because they don’t measure up to people that the media uses to represent “ideal” body size. When your diet fails, do you feel bad about yourself? Most of us do, because we believe the advertising myths that: 1) Everyone should look like the “ideal,” and 2) if we only try hard enough, we can look like the ideal. Reality, however, is that diversity is healthy and genetics determine our body size. Belief in the advertising myths can be dangerous for our children, whose self-‐esteem is still developing and who are trying to “fit in.” As parents, we can help our kids feel good about themselves by accepting them unconditionally and by focusing on their inner qualities instead of their outward appearance. Our own more realistic attitudes can help to prevent low self-‐esteem, dangerous dieting habits, and eating disorders. The presence of an unrealistic beauty ideal, coupled with a $40 billion diet industry, does not in itself cause eating disorders; but it does provide fertile ground in which they can grow and flourish. Because some eating disorder symptoms (such as weight obsession and erratic dieting) are actually seen as “normal” behavior in our culture, it becomes very difficult to recover from eating disorders once they have taken hold. (A recent statistic claims only one-‐third of patients fully recover.) In the United States it is estimated that 5 – 10 million girls and women and 1 million boys and men are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder or borderline conditions. (Shissak et.al. 1995) For these reasons it is important that we, as parents, are aware of the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and also of what we can do to help prevent them in our children. (Eighty-‐six percent of eating disorder patients report onset by the age of 20.) Anorexia nervosa is characterized by the refusal to maintain a normal body weight; bulimia involves a recurring cycle of binge eating and purging. Extremes in exercise, weight changes, fear of food or fat, obsession with thinness, and the amount of food eaten or not eaten can be signals that a problem is developing. Keep the lines of communication open with your teen. If you are concerned, let them know in a gentle and supportive manner. Know the school or community resources you can turn to for help. Early identification affords a greater chance of recovery. For more information on eating problems or disorders, contact the following: 1. National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) provides a hotline, information, support groups, referrals, and a newsletter. 847/831-‐3438 or www.anad.org 2. D214 PARENT NEWS Parents and Teachers Talk Technology at Conference: A group of local school districts collaborated in November to provide a half-‐day workshop for parents to understand how technology is changing the 21st century classroom. High School District #214, in partnership with Districts 21, 23, 25, 26, 57 and 59, hosted the ENGAGE 2015 Parent Technology Conference at John Hersey High School. Nearly 400 people registered for the conference, which offered parents an opportunity to hear directly from educators about the roles and implications of technology -‐ from cyber security and apps to social media safety, the possibilities of coding even at young ages, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and supporting student learning at home. Parents learned how creativity and innovation in technology is advancing educational opportunities throughout District #214 and in local elementary districts, allowing students to connect with and learn from teachers, each other, and the world more than ever before. The conference was part of a continued effort to engage parents in the learning process. Breakfast Celebrates Industry Partners and Successes: In the last five years, District #214 students have logged more than 1.7 million hours in internships through partnerships with hundreds of business partners, helping them discover their future while still in high school. The District saluted those partners Wednesday, November 18 th at a breakfast that showcased student interns and thanked businesses for playing a role in student success. More than 100 partners from the 2015 calendar year were thanked. Dr. Alison Hilsabeck, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at National Louis University, Provided the keynote address. She called District 214’s program, “A Model for the Nation”. District 214’s Career Discovery External Experiences program matches students with business partners in fields that fuel their passion, from culinary arts and archite3cture to engineering, healthcare, and education. Internship experiences pair students with employers for as many as ten hours a week for a full semester or twenty hours a week for six summer weeks. Micro-‐internships provide opportunities for abbreviated experiences, with an objective of increased flexibility. District #214 hopes to have 3,000 students in internships by the 2016/17 school year, toward a goal of every student in the District completing some level of internship before graduation. Everyday Hero Campaign: Do you know a District #214 staff member who goes above and beyond? We are looking to recognize them as part of our continued 214 Everyday Hero project, with a goal of thanking and spotlighting the tremendous employees who go the extra mile for our schools and students. You can nominate heroes by giving them a public Twitter shoutout and using the #214Hero hashtag, or by emailing their story to our Hero inbox, at [email protected]. This academic year, we will profile select nominees in video vignettes on our District 214 YouTube page. We encourage you to join the conversation, and honor all who make a difference. PBIS at Elk Grove High School The main focus of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to build a positive school environment by providing appropriate expectations and supports for all Elk Grove students. Our goal is to help our students become more Respectful, Responsible, and Connected to create a school culture focused on students’ social, emotional, and academic success. Through its efforts over the past few years, Elk Grove has been recognized by the Illinois PBIS Network as an “Emerging” school because of the effective implementation of program strategies to improve student success. PBIS Committee has implemented a Gold Card Program to recognize students who embody the qualities of being Respectful, Responsible, and Connected. Faculty members who witness these random acts of kindness give a Gold Card to the student, who then turns in those cards to enter a weekly drawing for a chance to win a PBIS shirt for themselves and the faculty member who nominated them. These Gold Cards are meant to provide positive reinforcement to students for displaying the behaviors that create a positive school environment. The latest Gold Card winner was Nick Diez nominated by Mrs. Smith, for helping students stay focused in class. PBIS White Cards Along with recognizing students who display positive behavior, the PBIS committee has also begun implementing a White Card program, which allows students to nominate faculty members who are Respectful, Responsible, and Connected. Students are encouraged to nominate faculty members in the same manner as the Gold Card program. These White Cards reinforce and recognize the faculty’s positive behavior that further shapes the school’s learning environment. Both White Cards and Gold Cards may be submitted in various locations throughout the school, including the library. The latest White Card winner was Mrs. Hammond for going beyond the call of duty with our assessments. Upcoming PBIS Assembly The first PBIS Assembly for second semester will be February 5th. We will be announcing the first semester winner of the PBIS Cup. The winning class will be awarded with ice cream. May the best class win! Elk Grove PBIS is Online!! To better communicate the goals and strategies of the PBIS program, the PBIS committee has created a website that you can visit at http://eghspbis.weebly.com. It contains information about committee members, different tiered supports provided for students, past Gold Card/White Card winners, and videos created by the committee and shown during morning announcements. As the school year continues, these monthly videos will hopefully send positive messages to the students. We are also on Twitter with the handle @ EGHS_PBIS . Please follow us to get the latest information and updates about he PBIS program. We encourage parents to reinforce the goals of our program by reminding students that positive behavior can truly make a difference. Thank you for your support as we continue to provide a first-‐class education for your students in an environment conducive to student achievement. Go Grens! Sincerely, The PBIS Committee EGHS Parent Newsletter
