... This book is a tribute to all the Alumni who have become the essence and meaning of the School. Also to their parents who, with their trust and support have built this great family. And of course, to all the teachers and professionals who, with their daily effort and commitment, have succeeded in making these fifty years of Edelweiss School unforgettable. ... EDELW EISS FLOW ER Leontopodium alpinum The Edelweiss flower is symbolic of a striving for height; it waits in some almost inaccessible place for someone to discover it. So many are those who search for it that it is at risk of extinction and as such it has been declared a protected species. Beneath its fragile appearance hides a flower able to survive at an altitude of 3.000 metres and in extreme temperatures LA ILUSIÓN DE LOS ORÍGENES. The climbing starts She had just finished her degree in Teaching. She was young, dynamic and captivating. She had a special strength and composure that made those that knew her unable to remain indifferent. That’s how Julia Casado was, and along with her mother Doña Paquita Ruiz and with the help of her sister Mª Francis Casado and her friend Teresa Cuesta, they opened in 1961 one of the first nursery schools in Valencia on the Gran Via Fernando el Católico: Edelweiss School. When Edelweiss School started there were very few nurseries established in Valencia. The cultural climate was different and children stayed at home until they started school. But Julia and Doña Paquita were not afraid to break these moulds and moved forward * iniciativa con ilusión y muchas horas de dedicación, además de introducir un elemento diferenciador e innovador en aquella época: la enseñanza en inglés. ... this initiative with enthusiasm and many hours of dedication, as well as introducing a distinguishing and innovative element at the time: teaching in English. So, from the very beginning, teaching and learning English has been one of the main objectives of the School. A curriculum, in which a high percentage of the students’ time is spent learning this subject, has been developed, always relying on the most modern teaching methods and with a native teaching staff. These aspects make it possible for students to be practically bilingual in English / Spanish upon completing their stay at the School. And in this way, with the enthusiasm required to undertake a serious and high level educational project, parents, teachers and students were turning the Edelweiss School into a “big family.” “I remember the hours teachers spent teaching us how to read and improve our reading with the “Palau” booklets. We were taken out of class one by one to show how well we could read and thus improve our reading and understanding skills” * “En aquellos años, como apenas había tráfico, bajábamos a jugar en el jardín central de la Gran Vía Fernando el Católico. “In those years, as there was hardly any traffic, we went down to play in the garden located in the central area of the Gran Vía Fernando el Católico. However, when traffic increased, we were allowed to play in the nearby Botanical Garden and we went there taking our bibs and cups of water with us. Afterwards we had to relocate and we were given a space in the entrance courtyard of the Colegio San José de los Jesuitas.” “From the beginning, the students’ Catholic education has been very important. We prepared the children for their First Holy Communion and they received it in the Colegio San José. During those years, children were in the Nursery until they were 8 or 9 years old.” “I remember with special affection the End of the Year and Christmas Festivals we celebrated at the Teatro Principal of Valencia. In the 60’s we were the only ones who did these kinds of festivals. We had a teacher who was in charge of making the sketches for the costumes that were rented or tailored at home. We also prepared and printed an Official Programme which was distributed amongst parents and friends. And we would fill the Teatro Principal!” THE EFFORT OF THOSE YEARS Burjassot 1967-1971. Campo Olivar 1971-1983 Years went by and the need for space grew. For this reason it was decided to move to a stately home located on the Calle Joaquin Navarro in Burjassot, near the Burjassot – Godella train station. Most children ate at school. The food was prepared by Jacinto, followed soon after by Abel Posadas, who is still in charge of the kitchen today and whom children and adults remember with great affection. He made lunch time one of the best moments of the day. The festivals began to take place in the school where all the parents gathered together to watch their children dance, sing in English and practice judo etc. The children felt very important and happy. Llegada a los 1.000 m. de a lt itud Reaching 1.000 met res Some time later urban development outside the school made access difficult for buses and parents’ vehicles. This, linked with the lack of space and the increasing demand for places for new pupils, forced us to relocate again, this time to the school’s current site at Campo Olivar. ... Campo Olivar (1971-1983) It was necessary to find a location that was near Valencia, where children could grow up in contact with nature. A plot of 12.000 m2 was acquired in Campo Olivar, at a time when the streets were still undeveloped and unpaved. The horseshoe-shaped building, currently used for Preschool and Primary Education was then constructed for Nursery. It is surrounded by large green areas to which the pool and other facilities have gradually been added. The beginnings in Campo Olivar were very intense. The enthusiasm of the early start merged alongside a commitment from everyone -parents, teachers and governors -, who with their work and persistence made possible a project that was emerging to be unique. It was then when Marita Casado joined the governors, along with her two sisters Julia and Mª Francis and their mother Doña Paquita. Also, their father, Fernando became head of administration and Vicky Casado, their cousin, was in charge of teaching English. The Edelweiss School project was becoming a consolidated fact with a real calling for growth and continuity over time; it was a glimpse of what has become the present Edelweiss School. “Since we were little we were taught values and we functioned by objectives: table manners, the importance of a varied diet, being properly seated in class, etc. And of course, to love our parents, who we liked to surprise with handicrafts on Mother’s and Father’s Day. I think all our parents still keep those memories!” It is a luxury to have Abel cook for so many children, especially the days that we had pizza or croquettes. We also knew all his kitchen staff; besides helping him in the kitchen they kept an eye on us at lunch time.” IN DIFFICULT TIMES Campo Olivar (1984-1994) At the school, as in life, there were also hard times. It was not easy when implementation of EGB at the school was undertaken. Despite the insistence of many parents, the school feared losing its sense of family that had distinguished itself and cost so much to achieve. Llegada a los 2.000 m. de altitud Reaching 2.000 metres The school’s growth started from Nursery where a solid base had been established by experienced teachers from the previous stage such as Miss Laura Barbeta (†) and M ª Dolores Garés and others that continue work today: Encarnita Muñoz, Petri Chillarrón, Isabel Veintimilla or Mª Carmen Feltrer and also the new EGB teachers that have joined: Carmen Ferraz, Patrick Wayne, Ana Taulet , Mercedes Landecho, Gloria Parra, Cristina Collado, Begoña Trénor, Miguel Cortes, Gemma Campos, Joseph Escopín, Lita Miss Rojas (†), Miss Ofelia Buencamino, Robert Garcia, Cristina Folch, who amongst others have added to this family. The school chapel was built in 1986. Since then, it is where we have celebrated First Holy Communions and Confirmations. It was Doña Paquita’s wish that Comuniones y Confirmaciones. ... this should be the case, a wish that came true a year after her death and with the help of many of our original parents. We remember our first priest, Father José Chover (†), D. José Guerola and D. Juan Navarro, who have officiated at many Eucharist in the chapel and have given First Holy Communion to a large number of students. Also the first football and basketball fields were built, consolidating sports more and more as an essential complement to the children´s education. Participation in interschool leagues, games played during breaks and training sessions became commonplace. The school began to celebrate the Olympics and sports days in which students and teachers participated on the athletics fields in the old Turia riverbed. Later, as new sports were added, they were held in a sports centre closer to the school and at the school’s new facilities. “It is impossible to forget the day of our First Holy Communion. The teacher Mª Carmen and the priests prepared us so thoroughly, and such was our enthusiasm that I believe no one has forgotten that day nor the songs of the choir, requests and offerings.” En la puerta del Colegio nos despedíamos de nuestros profesores dándoles la mano de uno en uno y con el mítico: ´see you tomorrow´” “Every day at the start of class we would say a prayer in English and at the end of the day we would go in line towards the buses. At the school gate we would say goodbye to our teachers one by one by shaking hands and uttering the mythical : ´see you tomorrow´” * Fila de atrás / Back row: Julia, Isabel, Gloria, Petri, Encarnita, Joseph, Sonia, María. “I also remember how we prepared for the Christmas Festival. The students performed a live nativity scene and sang Christmas carols. A real mule was brought in for the arrival of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.” A CONSOLIDATED PROJECT Campo Olivar (1994-2012) In 1994 the Secondary School building was constructed on an adjoining site acquired for that purpose, since the new LOGSE, had transformed the eight years of EGB (14 years) in the six years of Primary Education (12 years) and the four years of ESO (16 years). From this moment on some new teachers still remembered by all join the School: Leonor Donet, Juan Ferrer, Janice Thomson, Janet Griffiths, Richard Mackenzie, Marisa Martinez and many others who are still with us today. ... In 2001, after Julia Casado´s death, Salvador Mas, who, from the beginning had been involved in the development of the School, being always a great supporter, and Fanny Suau Casado, Julia Casado’s daughter, who had been teaching at the school for a few years, joined the board of governors as permanent members. Nowadays Edelweiss School offers educational stages from Nursery and Primary up to Compulsory Secondary. In all the educational stages the school tries to instil a spirit of solidarity. The Collection of food and nappies for the Provida Association of Valencia, the support of various charitable projects and visits to senior citizens homed in the Residence for the elderly in Burjassot, are some examples. “I remember eating quickly so I could go out to play in the garden. The lunch break was fun. The boys never stopped playing football and the girls played a different game every day. It is customary that football coaches are alumni of the School. We had so much fun that we didn’t want the bell to ring and when it did we all queued up at the water fountain to drink” * “El cambio de uniforme y de edificio con el paso a secundaria era también decisivo. “The change of uniform and building was also decisive in the step taken towards Secondary. There, the teachers treated us as grownups and taught us with great dedication. The tutor of each course accompanied us on every school trip and this also increased the trust we had in them.” “E.S.O. English is intensive, especially in the years in which we prepare for the Cambridge Official Exams. It is an advantage to leave the school with this Certificate and have it as a starting point.” “A high demand was placed on us in class. Teachers knew how to get the best out of us because they knew us individually. We had to have our outlined notes in our notebooks or in our “index cards” updated and hand them in on the day of the test.” “We all remember Fallas fondly: making ninots, the excitement of electing the Falleros of the year, how we sang the praises of Abel after the ‘Xocolatà’, and watching Mr. Diego’s firework display.” Cinderella, Robin Hood, Little Indians… ¡Éramos verdaderos actores!” “The arrival of spring was a time we really enjoyed. In May, we offered flowers to the Virgin; we changed into our summer uniform and started preparing for the end of year festivals. The teachers tried their best so that everything (the set, the scripts, etc.) was perfect for our performance about which we were really nervous: Cinderella, Robin Hood, Little Indians, etc. ... 50 YEARS, A LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE After many years of dedication and the intensive work invested, it is of great satisfaction and joy to see the progress of pupils who have gone through Edelweiss School and see in each of them that “something” that characterises our students. Sometimes we’re asked the reason for the high level of satisfaction amongst parents, students and teachers. We’re asked what the key is. Perhaps it’s the familiar ambience that allows each student to be someone very special to us. Perhaps it’s because we want to know every child individually to see what he can achieve in order to bring out the best in himself. Perhaps it’s because we give more importance to daily work and effort rather than to results. Perhaps it’s because we instil within each pupil that they have something special and if they develop it they will be able to reach the Edelweiss flower: the flower that only those who get to know the value of enthusiasm, effort, perseverance and friendship can reach.
