Year of Mercy "So what do we see, when we look to the Cross where Jesus was nailed? We contemplate the sign of the infinite love of God for each of us and the source of our salvation. That Cross is the source of the mercy of God that embraces the whole world. Through the Cross of Christ the evil one is overcome, death is defeated, we are gifted life, hope is restored. This is important: Through the Cross of Christ hope is restored. The Cross of Jesus is our only true hope! That is why the Church 'exalts' the Holy Cross, which is why we Christians bless ourselves with the sign of the cross. That is, we don’t exalt crosses but THE glorious Cross of Christ, a sign of God’s love, our salvation and journey towards the resurrection. This is our hope." — Pope Francis Please join us as we honor Sr. Pauline Schutz for 38 years of dedicated service to the St. Pius X Catholic Community. Come celebrate and wish her well as she leaves St. Pius X and continues her spiritual journey at the Franciscan Sisters Motherhouse in Joliet. If you love God and have a heart for students, we would love to have you on the Youth Ministry Team or simply join us for an upcoming event. If interested, please email Mark, at [email protected], for more info. We Need Your Plastic Bags!! Have you ever heard of mats that can be made out of plastic bags? First clean, plastic bags are collected, then turned into plarn (plastic yarn). Next, the yarn is crocheted into mats that our homeless can use to help keep them dry and warm! Our youth ministry, in conjunction with our prayer shawl ministry, will be making these mats starting in September. What can YOU do? Please bring in your clean plastic bags and place in the box located in the Mary Room during August. Grocery size bags work best. Bags can come from stores like Target, Walmart, Jewel and Walgreens. It takes around 600 bags to make one mat. The sample shown here was made from all Target bags. Also, if you have a desire to help make the mats, please contact Maria Wachholz at [email protected] or Estelle Soger at [email protected]. Teen Choir - This is a new group forming this year which includes any high school or college-aged singers and instrumentalists. We will rehearse on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm and sing at the second 11:30 am Mass each month. First rehearsal will be Thursday, October 13 at 6:30 pm in the choir loft, and we will sing on Sunday, October 16 at the 11:30 am Mass. Please arrive at 11:00 am to warm up. Music and lots of encouragement provided to all! St. Cecilia Singers (Children's Choir) - The St. Pius X school children will continue to rehearse on Wednesday mornings at 7:15 am until 8:30 am Mass for children 3rd-8th grade. Choir Space is limited for the school choir, so auditions may be required. Starting this year, there will also be a rehearsal offered for the Faith Formation students on Mondays from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm if there is interest. Singers will be able to go right from choir practice to their Faith Formation classes. The combined children's choir (School and Faith Formation) will sing each Sunday at the 9:30 am Family Mass. Please arrive at 9:00 am for warm ups. Information meeting will be held (for both groups) on Wednesday, September 21 at 3:00 pm in the church. Concert Choir - This year, we are pleased to be offering a new opportunity to the school and parish children! Since membership in the St. Cecilia Singers is limited due to choir loft space, Concert Choir is an after-school choir open to all children in grades 3-8 who would like to perform a wide variety of music and receive excellent vocal music education. We will rehearse Tuesdays from 3:15-4:30 pm and possibly Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 pm if we have enough interest for both an older and younger choir. Concerts will be performed in the church at least once per semester. Informational meeting and sign up on Tuesday, September 20 at 3:15 pm in the church. There will be a $60 fee to participate. Cantors - Cantors will rehearse on the Third Thursday of each month from 6:30-7:30 pm. First rehearsal will be October 20. The cantor ministry is for trained singers and an audition with the music director is necessary. Please contact me if you may be interested in singing as a cantor. Stay tuned!
