Fourth Sunday of Advent December 20, 2015 The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent and we hear the beautiful gospel story of the Visitation. The pregnant Mary— literally the God-bearer—goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is also with child. Hers is John the Baptist, the Herald of Jesus. These two holy women meet and rejoice in one another’s presence and in the great things God has done for both of them. Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary burst forth with the song of praise which we call the Magnificat, beginning, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” We are told that even John the Baptist, still unborn, leaped for joy in his mother’s womb. Thus we are shown, side by side, the two women, one seemingly too old to have a child, but destined to bear the last prophet of the Old Covenant, of the age that was passing away; and the other woman, seemingly not ready to have a child, but destined to bear the One Who was Himself the beginning of the New Covenant, the age that would not pass away. Salvation is brought forth because these two unlikely women trusted in God and said yes to their role in the plan of salvation. May we take Mary and Elizabeth as our role models and do what God asks of us! Let me take this opportunity a few days early to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! On behalf of Fr. Joe, Fr. Richard and Fr. Gonzalo and all our staff, I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! I look forward to seeing you all at Christmas Mass. Remember to get here early and bring a friend who maybe hasn’t been back to church in a while! Enjoy this last wild week before Christmas and know that you are in our prayers! Next Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family and on January 1, we will celebrate the Feast of Mary the Mother of God and all the wonderful new beginnings she represents for us!
