QRIS Star
Program
Spotlight
Wildflower Day Care is currently participating in the QRIS
program. I, Rionna Ruley, primary provider of our program,
was first introduced to the program while attending the Build a
Business Cohort. During this cohort I was working on creating a
strong foundation for our program. I was very excited to learn
that Douglas County would be participating in the field study
for the QRIS program.
I was fortunate that many of the changes I worked on with
the Build a Business cohort aligned with the QRIS portfolio.
Our first step was to build a quality improvement plan. Once
we identified the needs of our program we were able to use
the support funds from the QRIS program to make necessary
improvements.
For us, support funds were important in making the necessary
changes to our program. There is very little funds left over
for program improvements in our budget. Once we completed
the improvements we used photographic evidence and copies
of handbooks to support our portfolio. While working on the
portfolio it was important to clearly explain how what we were
doing met portfolio standards. Some of the changes we made
with our improvement funds included more culturally diverse
materials in our program, more portable gross motor play
equipment and organizing and labeling our storage spaces for
toys and materials. In addition, we worked on hiring staff that
were well qualified and getting current staff at a level that met
the personnel qualifications.
In November, Wildflower Day Care officially achieved a 4 star
quality rating. It was a proud moment for our program. So far,
in 2014, we have completed and resubmitted our portfolio
for a 5 star rating. We are anxiously awaiting the results. I
would highly encourage any provider who qualifies to take part
in the QRIS program. As child care providers, our program
believes that we must always be striving for improvement
to be leaders in early childhood education. * As of March
2014, Wildflower Day Care just received their 5 star
rating!

The Office of Child Care (OCC) and Department of Human
Services (DHS) received Federal notification in July of 2013
regarding Health and Safety training requirements for Child
Care Providers.
The new regulations will affect License-Exempt and
Registered Family Child Care Providers who care for
children receiving a DHS child care subsidy. The required
“Basic Child Care Healthy and Safe” training will cover three
specific areas; prevention and control of infectious disease,
building and physical premises safety, and health and safety
training.
The implementation date for the Basic Child Care Healthy and
Safe training is April 1, 2014. This is a pre-service training.
This means the training will need to be completed before a
child care provider can be approved and listed with DHS.
The Basic Child Care Healthy and Safe training will be
available online and will take approximately 2 hours to
complete. Completion of Oregon Kids Healthy and Safe
classroom version will also meet this requirement.
On April 1, 2014 the Provider Listing and Pre-list forms will
be updated with information about how to access the online
training or find more information at: www.oregon.gov/dhs/
children/pages/childcare/providers.aspx
If you are currently listed with DHS you will not be required
to take the training until you reach your next reevaluation
date.
*Family Connections will offer the classroom version of the
training in Eugene. See training bulletin for date and time.
FC offers the child care version of the Food Handler’s manual (blue book)
and testing in a self study option ONLY. For a manual and instructions,
please contact FC office. Cost for the self study packets is $10.00 per
permit. There is also an online option @ www.childcarefoodhandler.org

their understanding of the scientific
method and how math relates to all
areas of life. Use your own problem

Descripción
Los participantes aprenderán
estrategias implementadas de ASQ
para programas de cuidado de niños.
Aquí aprenderán a administrar y a
implementar los resultados.
También aprendan como comunicar
con los padres cuando los resultados
son serios. Se recomienda si son
parte del QRIS que vengan a esta
clase.
Esta clase es la primera clase para

como un negocio.
La Orientación es una clase que

procesos de listado y facturación.
También aprenderá como reunir los
requisitos para la cuota mejorada.
En Oregón el personal escolar y
cuidado de niños son informantes
obligatorios de reportar sospechas
de abuso y negligencia. En este
taller los participantes aprenderán el
proceso de como reportar estas
sospechas.
Esta clase es requerida para obtener
y renovar la licencia Registrada, o
Certificada, o para trabajar en un
Centro. También esta licencia le
ayuda a obtener la mejor tarifa en el
pago que recibe de la Unidad de
Pago Directo.
En este entrenamiento aprenderán el
rol y prácticas de las proveedoras de
cuidado de niños para establecer las
rutinas diarias que apoyan y ayudan
a los niños a desarrollar una
saludable identidad cultural y para
prevenir comportamientos difíciles
debido a asuntos culturales.
Tendremos 6 horas de
entrenamiento de educación infantil,
premios y comida.
