Thousand Oaks Arts Festival
Cool Breeze Century Bicycle Ride
Ventura Lemon Fest
Each year, the Channel Islands Bicycle Club and the
Kiwanis Club of Ventura team up to welcome more
than 1,600 cyclists for a 30-, 60-, 100- or 126-mile ride
north from Ventura. Money raised helps fund the

Typically held in early September at Pacific View Mall
in Ventura, the festival is designed to honor lemons,
which once grew on the land where the shopping
center now sits. The festival includes live
entertainment, a children’s play area, arts and crafts,

Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills is named for its more than
120,000 eucalyptus, sycamore, fir, pine and
pepper trees planted throughout the area. It was
in this area, that the treaty was signed to end the
Mexican War, thus clearing the way for California
to be admitted to the Union in 1850 as the 31st
State.
Agoura Hills
The community’s name was chosen to honor
early settler Pierre Augoure in 1928, but though
misspelling or for ease of pronunciation, the
Postal Service changed it to Agoura, becoming
Agoura Hills with the city’s incorporation.
Located in the Santa Monica Mountain foothills
just 30 minutes from many urban centers, the
city sits among oak-covered canyons and rolling
hillsides and is just minutes from ocean beaches.
Visitors will be treated to a city with culture! The
Valley Cultural Center serves the greater San
Fernando Valley as the prominent resource in
promoting the performing and visual arts.
Warner Center Park, the 20-acre plot of land
donated by the Harry Warner family (Warner
Brothers Pictures) is host to free concerts in the
park, including the Playboy Jazz Festival, to
more than 145,000 people

“Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains
National Recreation Area with hiking and biking
trails in over 80 acres, in six parks, ranging from

sprouted when a wagonload of pumpkins
tumbled to the ground. Naturally, it is now the
site for the annual Pumpkin Festival.

Visitors will enjoy touring the 4.5 acre Camarillo
Ranch. Walk through the richly restored ranch
home and experience the grandeur of residing
in a 6,000 square-foot house. Old Town is
another attraction. You might not realize it if
you’re just whizzing by on Highway 101, but
Old Town is not just the older commercial strip
along Ventura Boulevard just south of the
freeway. This whole area is really the heart of
the old Camarillo “town site” that was first laid
out back in 1910.

The city was named for Juan Camarillo who
purchased the almost 10,000 acre Rancho
Calleguas in 1875 from Jose Pedro Ruiz.
Geographically near Ventura County’s center,
Camarillo is one of the area’s fastest growing
cities with new housing projects bringing more
residents to town.
Its stange sounding name comes from the
Henry T. Oxnard family who developed one of
the city’s first industries – a sugar-beet refinery.
The city is surrounded by some of the richest
agricultural land in the world. It is also home to
Ventura County operated Channel Islands
Harbor, a gateway to the Channel Islands.
Visitors will take pleasure in see the city’s
downtown Heritage Square, which has 15
restored or replica turn-of-the-century houses
which made the National Register of Historic
Places in 1998 and the State Register in 1999.

Sitting in the heart of the Santa Clara River
Valley and at the gateway to the Los Padres
National Forest with incredible mountain vistas,
Fillmore has been dubbed the “Last Best Small
Town”. It was originally named after J.A.
Fillmore, the General Railroad Superintendent
for the Southern Pacific’s, Pacific Division when
the line in the area was first built.
Believed to be named for St. Paula, a noble
Roman matron, this self-proclaimed Citrus
Capital of the World is a journey into life as it
was a century ago. Miles of orange, lemon and
avocado groves still surround the community.
Visitors will find a historic downtown punctuated
by an outdoor mural program on many
downtown buildings. Victorian and Craftsman
homes line Santa Paula streets. Two
museums, the California Oil Museum and the
Aviation Museum profide informative diversions.
Santa Paula joins the towns of Fillmore and
Piru being promoted as a tourist attraction
called Heritage Valley.
Visitors are drawn to its tourist-train related
activities provided through the Fillmore and
Western Railway Company. Although Historic
Downtown Fillmore was toppled by the 1994
Northridge earthquake it was rebuilt with care to
retain the old-time California charm with the
crispness of modern amenities.

Simi Valley
The name comes from a Chumash Indian word,
shimiji, which refers to the thread-like clouds
that appear sometimes over the valley. Located
at the edge of eastern Ventura County encircled
by beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away
from the congestion of the San Fernando Valley
and Los Angeles County and is consistently
rated one of the safest cities in the nation.
Visitors come by the “busloads” to the home of
the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and
Museum, which hosts the Air Force One
Pavillion. Corriganville Park is another mustsee, once known for being the backdrop of
many western movies and television shows.
Moorpark
Moorpark is a small town with character! It was
founded by Robert Poindexter in 1927 and was
named for the Moorpark Apricot, which once
grew in abundance in the area. For years, it was
a rural community where you could see cows in
the hills when you drove down Spring Road.
Now, it is home to some of Ventura County’s

Thousand Oaks
The name, presumably for the area’s many oak
trees, first appears on a track map in 1923.
Today it is home to Amgen, Inc., the largest
biotechnology company in the world and
Ventura County’s largest private employer.
Perennially, it is among the safest small cities in
America. The residents are serious about
preserving the ring of open space surrounding
the city, with local and city groups continuing to
buy more land to save it from development.
Visiting this area must include the Thousand
Oaks Civic Arts Plaza’s Countrywide Performing
Arts Center. This is the largest performing arts
center between Los Angeles and San Francisco
and is funded through a unique public/private
partnership between the City of Thousand Oaks
and the Alliance for the Arts. For those seeking
out historical sights, visit the Stagecoach Inn
Museum Complex which includes a pioneer
home, a Spanish-Mexican adobe and a
Chumash Ap (tule dwelling) as well as the
Stagecoach Inn originally known as the Grand
Union Hotel when it was built in 1876.

Ventura Lemon Fest
The annual celebration of agricultural and creative
achievements takes place at the county fairgrounds
on Ventura’s waterfront. The 12-day fair features
nationally known entertainers, a rodeo and demolition

Typically held in early September at Pacific View Mall
in Ventura, the festival is designed to honor lemons,
which once grew on the land where the shopping

Ventura Street Fair Ventura’s downtown comes
alive on Independence Day It features arts and crafts,

Nature Lover? Whale Watching and the Natural
Splendor of the Channel Islands are found in the
Channel Islands and in the harbors leading there.
Situated along California’s central coast the
Ventura and Oxnard access to the Channel
Islands is worth exploring. Whether you plan to
spend the day whale watching in the Channel

Monarch butterfly, exploring the natural wonder
of Ventura County is time well spent.
Known as the American Galapagos, the Channel
Islands National Park is comprised of five of the
eight California Channel Islands, including
Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel,
and Santa Barbara. These islands are home to
over 2,000 species of plants and animals, 145 of
which are completely unique to these islands
and not found anywhere else on earth.

The biodiversity found on and in the waters
surrounding the Channel Islands National Park
is evidenced by the presence of dolphins, seals, a
multitude of sea birds, and Gray, Blue, and
Humpback Whales. Whales are the largest
animals on earth and they migrate along
north/south routes seasonally. Each year, as
many as 25,000 Gray Whales travel from their
Alaskan feeding grounds to the warm waters off
the coasts of California and Mexico.
The average length of a Gray Whale is between
36’ and 50’ and can weigh between 26 and 34
metric tons. During their southern migration,
the whales travel very close to the Channel

The trips are narrated by experienced naturalists
and last about 3 hours.

On many trips, the frolicking bottle nosed
dolphins often steal the show. Island trips offer
opportunities to view more than 27 varieties of
seals and dolphins in and around the
surrounding waters. Thousands of common and
Bottle-Nosed Dolphins can be seen year round
off the coast of Ventura along with California
Sea Lions and Harbor Seals.
Here are a few helpful tips when going whale
watching:
1. Dress warmly and in layers. It can get cold
out there, and with the ocean spray and water
spouting whales, you may find yourself a bit
wet. Be ready to shed your wet clothing just in
case. And if it gets warm, you can always shed a
layer.
2. Be careful with your camera. It can get wet
on the high sea and you don’t want to have your
camera ruined or your pictures lost.
3. Do some research. It doesn’t hurt to
familiarize yourself with what you will be seeing.
Read up on the types of whales you will be
seeing and any other types of marine life that
you may encounter. The more you know, the
more you’ll enjoy.
4. Stay Healthy. If you get motion or sea sick,
bring something that will help relax you.
Bringing sunscreen is also a good idea. With the
sun’s rays reflecting off the ocean’s surface, it’s
easy to get too much sun.

The five islands that comprise the national park
and marine sanctuary. At 12 miles off of the
mainland, Anacapa Island (5 miles long) is the
closest to southern California’s densely
populated coast. And in 1853, the side-wheel
steamer Winfield Scott, steaming ahead at full
speed, crashed into the rocks off of Anacapa and
sank. In 1912, the Coast Guard built a light
beacon and now a fully operational lighthouse
has been there since 1932.
Santa Cruz Island is 22 miles long and from two
to six miles wide, making it the largest island in
the national park. This island is a miniature of
what California looked like 100 years ago, with
pristine beaches, caves and untouched canyons.

Santa Rosa Island is 15 miles long by 10 miles
wide. San Miguel Island is the westernmost
island and therefore receives the most severe
weather from the open ocean and Santa Barbara
Island is the smallest of these five islands, at
about one square mile.

The J. Paul Getty Museum
Of all the things to do and see in Los Angeles,
there are few better or more rewarding

Santa Barbara Mission
The "Queen of the Missions" was founded in
1786 and was the tenth of 21 Franciscan
missions throughout California. The history of
the mission is reflective of the history of the city
of Santa Barbara. The land that the mission is
situated on changed hands from the Chumash
Indians, to the Spanish, and eventually to U.S.
interests as California became a state.
