EN LA ÉPOCA DEL ALMA
A
lojada en la época del alma, Ángela Lergo nos ofrece un recorrido vital y poético a través de
sus creaciones corpóreas. La magia, la existencia humana, la naturaleza y el compromiso social se funden
en esta exposición cuyas instalaciones y demás piezas escultóricas ocultan certezas que sólo los sentidos
pueden experimentar.
La exploración del cuerpo humano y la indagación en sus dimensiones dialécticas y emocionales consolidan
el discurso de "Todos los Momentos vividos", un viaje a la memoria de las sensaciones que busca transmitir
inquietudes y entablar un diálogo entre la obra y el espectador.
Creadas bajo las proporciones del más puro clasicismo -el equilibrio y la armonía definen sus formas-, las
esculturas expuestas conviven con los soportes tecnológicos más actuales, que sirven para dar voz o
movimiento al silencio o reposo en el que estas obras descansan. La conjugación de la luz y el color crean,
a su vez, el ambiente íntimo que las envuelve y potencian esa misteriosa aura que, ya desde lejos y mucho
más cuando una se acerca a ellas, percibe.
Del mundo interior de la artista sevillana nacen seres ilusorios, mezcla de ensueño, pensamiento y fantasía.
Personajes cargados de intención, atrapados en un destino incierto en el que se alojan peces voladores,
jardines de sal o corazones de agua que susurran quimeras. Rostros enigmáticos que, pese a la aparente
y hermética frialdad de sus miradas, gestos y actitudes, se muestran fieramente humanos en su mensaje.
La ficción y la realidad, lo artificial y natural, se abrazan. La naturaleza y la identidad del ser se transforman
en experiencia estética y comunicativa.
Cuerpos desnudos por los que navegan melodías sigilosas, enigmas y naufragios, recuerdos presentes y
futuros, momentos vividos. Manantiales oníricos que desprenden, bajo una apariencia frágil y delicada, la
energía y fortaleza de una intimidad sonora que despierta al inconsciente. Inquietante serenidad que tienta
a las manos, seduce miradas y provoca al espíritu de quienes la contemplan. Imágenes que inundan la
retina del público de una irrealidad habitada por seres de materia y credo.
Creaciones escultóricas que se despliegan como una especie de ritos, liturgias o ceremonias, que demandan
la atención del espectador. No es extraño por ello que, cuando una se detiene a admirarlas, a tratar de
vivirlas, a escuchar el eco de sus palabras calladas, pueda sentirse una intrusa que está profanando una
intimidad sagrada. Es momento entonces de dejarse llevar por lo que cada elemento sugiere. La experiencia,
el momento, el instante, se convierten en arte vivido.
En la instalación que da título a esta exposición, Todos los momentos vividos, una sobrecogedora y delicada
figura femenina yace desnuda boca arriba sumergida de medio cuerpo en un manto de sal marina. El verde
metalizado de su piel titila reflejos tornasolados de color rosa. Los ojos cerrados a una meditación infinita,
aceptando la espera. Y el corazón despierto, abierto a la altura del pecho, formado por un estanque de agua
tranquila en la que se derrama de forma intermitente una gota de líquido que rompe la paz de su superficie.
Una ráfaga de peces alados emprende su vuelo imaginario abriendo nuevos horizontes por el aire. Dormida
en la almohada del tiempo todo es sosiego y calma. Todo es anhelo. "En mi jardín se vio una estatua joven/
se juzgó mármol y era carne viva/ un alma joven habitaba en ella/ sentimental, sensible sensitiva". Versos
del gran poeta modernista Rubén Darío que bien podrían definir el aliento que suscita esta composición
escultórica.
Bajo lo que pudiese pensarse a primera vista, la creadora andaluza no sólo se debe a la belleza. Lergo es
una mujer comprometida con su tiempo y la realidad de un mundo en constante cambio y conflicto. Muestra
de ello es la energía y sutileza con la que en esta ocasión aborda temas tan actuales como la guerra en su
instalación I will, una partícula de futuro que, como explica la propia escultora, "no habla de una acción
concreta, sino que sólo da la idea de futuro".
Los versos de una composición del polémico Guillaume Apolinaire son los cimientos en los que se sustenta
esta pieza. "Hay mil pequeños abetos quebrados por los cascos/ de los obuses estallados a mi alrededor
/hay a media noche soldados que sierran tablas para los ataúdes/ hay un cementerio lleno de cruces". Versos
pertenecientes al poema Hay que aparecen inscritos sobre una plataforma de metacrilato que alberga la
poderosa e impactante presencia de una figura masculina de tamaño natural, tumbada con el torso levantado,
que se esfuerza en vano por despegar del suelo. Intención truncada, inútil tarea para un ser que lleva anclados
en su cabeza dos robustos cuernos de gamo que pesan demasiado. La escultura permanece inmóvil, retenida
en su esfuerzo. Pero no desiste en su propósito. Su mensaje de paz permanece intacto.
Junto a estas dos instalaciones, una colección de pequeñas piezas escultóricas completa la exposición.
Cuerpos desnudos, despojados de prejuicios, pensativos del recuerdo. Esculturas magnéticas, figuras presas
de una ilusión perenne, rostros hechiceros cautivos tras el engaño del sueño y la quietud. Miradores que
alumbran los paisajes escondidos en una lejanía cercana. En ellos se reflejan todos los colores de la existencia.
Olvidos que hay que recordar. Introspección.
Consolidada en la escena contemporánea internacional a través de las distintas disciplinas que abarca su
actividad artística -escultura, performance, videoarte, escenografía, etc.-, el manejo de la técnica y la creatividad
sin límites de esta artista se vierten en todo su trabajo. Pero es sin duda su afinada sensibilidad, traducida
en sugerencia, invitación, ofrecimiento e incluso desafío, la que discurre por la sangre de sus piezas escultóricas.
Las figuras de Ángela Lergo se expanden más allá del cuerpo y del espacio en el que están expuestas. No
hacen preguntas, pero esperan respuestas. No forman parte de la vida, pero no están muertas. Son los
huéspedes furtivos de un paraíso encontrado donde esta provocadora y embellecedora de instantes empezó
a moldear, hace ya muchos años y guiada por el instinto que genera el talento, el hogar de su arte. Allí, fuera
del tiempo, la mentira y la realidad, en la época del alma.

IN THE ERA OF THE SOUL
C
entred in the era of the soul, Ángela Lergo offers us a vital and poetic journey by way of her
bodily creations. Magic, human existence, nature and social commitment melt together in this exhibition
whose sculptures hide certainties that only the senses can experience.
The exploration of the human body and the investigation of its dialectic and emotional dimensions form the
discussion of "All the Moments Lived", a journey into the memory of sensations which strives to transmit
anxieties and set up a dialogue between sculpture and spectator.
Harmony and balance define the forms on show, created in the purest classical proportions and in perfect
symbiosis with the cutting edge technology which serves to give voice and movement to the silence and
repose in which the pieces rest. The interplay of light and colour create, in their turn, the intimate ambience
which surrounds the pieces and strengthens the mysterious aura which can be perceived even from a
distance, and much more acutely when one moves closer.
From the inner world of this Sevillian artist are born illusory beings, a melting pot of daydream, thought and
fantasy. Characters charged with intent, trapped in an uncertain fate in which we find flying fish, gardens of
salt and water hearts which whisper chimeras. Enigmatic faces which, despite the apparent hermetic coldness
of their stares and gestures, are fiercely human in their message. Fiction and reality, the artificial and the
natural locked in mutual embrace. The nature and the identity of being is transformed into an aesthetic and
communicative experience.
Naked bodies on which there sail surruptitious melodies, enigmas and shipwrecks, past and future memories,
moments lived. Oniric springs which issue, apparently frail and delicate, the energy and strength of a powerful
intimacy which wakes the unconscious. Unquiet serenity that tempts the hands, seduces looks or provokes
the spirit of those that contemplate them. Images which flood the retina with an unreality inhabited by material
beings with their own doctrine and creed.
Sculptures which unfurl like a type of rite, a liturgy or ceremony and demand the spectator's attention. For
this reason it is not strange, when one stops to admire them and to live them, that you hear the echo of their
silenced words and feel as an intruder who profanes their sacred intimacy. It is the perfect moment to let
yourself be swept away to where each element takes you. Experience, the moment, the instant, are transformed
into art to be lived.
In the work which gives the exhibition its title, 'All the moments lived', a delicate and startling female figure
lies face up, naked and half submerged in a mantle of salt. The metallic green of her skin gives off a pink
iridescence. The eyes, closed in infinite meditation, accept the waiting. And the heart, awake in the open
chest, is formed by of pool of tranquil water into which drops of liquid fall intermittently to break the peace
of the water's surface. A wave of flying fish, emerging from her open torso, embark on their imaginary flight,
opening new horizons in the air. Everything is calm and peace, asleep on the pillow of time. Everything is
longing. 'In my garden was seen a statue of a young girl/It was believed to be marble but it was living flesh/A
young soul lived within/Sentimental and sensitive.' These verses of the great modernist poet, Rubén Darío
could well define the gasp of breath which this sculpture provokes.
However, the Andalusian artist does not centre her work solely around beauty, despite what one might
consider at first glance. Lergo is a woman committed to her time and the realities of a world in constant
change and conflict. Proof of this is the energy and subtlety with which, on this occasion, she takes on themes
as current as War in her piece named 'I will', a particle of future which, as the sculptor herself explains, "
speaks only of the idea of future and not of any concrete future action'.
The foundations that hold this piece are to be found in the verses of the controversial poet Guillaume
Apolinaire: 'There are a thousand small fir trees shattered by the bomb shells/ exploding around me/ at
midnight there are soldiers sawing boards for coffins/ there's a cemetery full of crosses'. These verses belong
to the poem 'Hay (There are...)' and appear inscribed on the metacrilic platform which holds the powerful
impacting presence of a life-size male figure, lying with his torso raised, struggling in vain to rise from the
floor. Vain intent, a useless task for a being whose head is weighed down by two great stag horns. The figure
remains immobile, anchored in his struggle, but never stops trying. It's message of peace remains intact. .
Along with these two works, a collection of smaller sculptures complete the exhibition. Nude bodies, divested
of all prejudice, pondering memories. Magnetic sculptures, figures governed by an eternal dream, bewitched
faces trapped after the deceit of sleep and tranquillity. Vantage points that cast light on hidden landscapes
in a distant closeness. Figures that reflect all the myriad colours of existence. Forgotten things to be
remembered. Introspection.
Through the various disciplines which her creative work encompasses - sculpture, performance, video art,
set design, and the like - she is now a consolidated artist on the contemporary international scene. Technical
expertise and limitless creativity imbues all her work. But above all it is her finely-tuned sensitivity, transformed
into suggestion, invitation and even challenge, which runs through the blood of her sculptures.
Angela Lergo's figures expand beyond the body and beyond the space in which they are contained. They
ask no questions but they expect answers. They form no part in life, but they are not dead. They are the
furtive guests of a paradise found where this provocative artist, this former of beautiful moments, started to
mould and give shape, since many years ago and guided by the instinct that generates talent, the home of
her art. There, beyond time, lies and reality, in the era of the soul.
