Newsletter Issue 11 SPRING 2012 Hair cut-a-thon March 24, 2012 More than 90 people turned out for the second Hair Cut-A-Thon hosted by CCFSC at the Riverside City College Cosmetology School on March 24th. Haircuts, head shaves, manicures and pedicures for a minimum donation of $10 were done by the students with instructor supervision and by some honorary guest stylists. Jonathan Valencia, 5; Israel Rivas, 5; and Lillian Bensen, 6 are all cancer survivors who joined the event to assist in shaving heads and cutting 12-inch hair donations. Jonathan was more than excited to work the clippers and shave Michael Cook’s head. Cook, a Fort Irwin Firefighter, planted the seed for this event and fundraiser by calling CCFSC in 2005 and offering to have his head shaved by a child with cancer to show his support of all those fighting this disease. Melissa Latimer, from Riverside, shaved her head in honor of her cancer hero, Connor. Connor was diagnosed with medulloblastoma at only 19 months and is now 8 years old. He continues to battle this disease, but Melissa says Connor’s courage is beyond admirable and she wanted to demonstrate her appreciation for him through her support of our event. CCFSC collected 22 foot-long donations at the Cut-A-Thon to be sent in to Wigs for Kids, an organization dedicated to providing wigs for children with cancer. Throughout the years, CCFSC has collected more than 100 such donations with the support of the community. The event took place from 11:00am to 1:00pm, and the egg hunt began at 12:30pm. Over 200 participants joined in the Easter bash. A special guest, the Easter Bunny, was at the park with over 3,000 stuffed plastic eggs and Easter baskets for all the children. The Easter bunny led the children in a variety of group games and dances that included the “Hokey Pokey.” The Pacific Southeast District Optimists sponsored the event's activities with fun carnival type games as well as providing the food and refreshments. Families reunited with other families that have gone through similar circumstances while the kids enjoyed a day of Easter fun. Every smile makes all our hard work worth it. You can’t help but smile yourself when you see the patients and their siblings having a blast. All of our events are made possible through the countless support of our volunteers and our sponsors. A special thank you to the Pacific Southeast District Optimist for their generous support of our Easter Egg Hunt throughout the years. fiesta de pascua 31 marzo, 2012 La Fundación de Cáncer patrocinó una Fiesta de Pascua el sábado, 31 de marzo en el Sylvan Park en Redlands para familias que tienen un niño/a con cáncer. We had a large group of teens: Omar, Donato, Erika, Karina, Andrew, Juan, Ismael, Brooke, Raquel, Yareli, Danielle and Ben joined by Kristin, Chad and Stephanie as chaperones. For some, this was their first visit to Disneyland and we are honored to be able to offer this experience to our teens. We started the day off at Disneyland then made our way over to Disney’s California Adventure. Before heading home we finished the night at Downtown Disney with some souvenir shopping. We would like to thank Carl Colby and Disney Fire and Melissa Reimer for offering us their services and allowing us the opportunity to offer this trip to all the teens. Hockey game February 18, 2012 Teen Connection got together for a hockey doubleheader in February. The first game of the night was the Ontario Fire vs. FDNY game. It was great to see the fire departments hash it out on the ice. As the game came to an end, we headed outside to taste a few of the very delicious chilis the department had going for their Chili Cookoff. As our hunger grew, Donato, Karina, Juan, Ismael, Brooke, Raquel, Yareli and Danielle joined by Jessica and Stephanie headed out to The Hat for dinner between games. Yum!! The Hat was delicious! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals – everything from burgers, to chili cheese fries, to pastrami. After dinner we headed back out to the Citizen’s Business Bank Arena to see the Ontario Reign hockey team take on the Idaho Steelheads. It was the first hockey game for most of us and we all agreed that it was an interesting game. We cheered on our local Ontario Reign team as they earned their 3-2 victory over the Steelheads. gameworks March 10, 2012 Donato, Juan, Ismael, Brooke, Raquel, Yareli, Danielle, Omar and Dianna joined Teen Connection for an arcade adventure to Gameworks in Ontario on March 10th. We started off the night with dinner at Chik-Fil-A. Once we had our fill of yummy food we headed to start the fun. We all had a blast racing, playing arcade games, pool and so much more. There were so many things to play it was difficult to choose what we should do. Everyone had a great time and we would like to thank GameWorks for their hospitality. to register with Teen Connection contact Stephanie: [email protected] or (909) 558-3419 Spring 2012 • Page 6 HappY birthday Adam Chavez Akira-Marie Hernandez Alan Sandoval Alexandra Garcia Alondra Bedoy Alondra Vargas Alonso Garcia Alyssa Cuevas Angel Diaz Angel Ramirez Angelica Rojo Avery Pond Candace Termini Celine Decourten Courtney Spraque Deiauna Laffitte Destiny Gonzales Diana Gonzalez Emily Rivas Emma Santana Grace Perezchica Isabelle Deborn Jace Saunders Jaime Villa Jayleen Murillo John Barrios Jose de Jesus De Luna Mtz Joshua Eaton Katherine Givens Kayla Valdivia Lizbeth Ascencio Luis Mondragon Matthew England Michelle Velasco Miguel Zamora Morgan Falconieri Nhan Truong Nikko Molina-Perkins Olivia Mora Randy Simco Jr. Robert Stone Rodolfo Perez Rodrigo Sanchez Rudy Vallejo Saige Asmus Savannah Angulo Steve Huerta Teresa Torres Vanessa Duenas Violeta Gonzalez Zachary Cove Aaliyah Brown Aaliyah McGuire Abigail Perez Alejandra Bautista Alvin Campos Amanda Parra Amir Carter Andrew Raad Arturo Villarino Billy Moss Carlina Meza Christina Cruz Darrnell Jackson Derek Page Dylan Davis Edgar Partida Edgar Rodriguez Fatima Cuevas Francisco Aguirre Gabriel DePhilippis Gavin Winter Geovani Ibarra Giovanni Malpica Isaiah Angulo Ismael Gonzalez Ivan Torres Jacob Barrett Jacqueline Paisano Jade Madrigal Jamari Allan James Stack Janice Nguyen Jayleen Tejeda-Monje Jesus Silva Joseph Caballero Joseph Subia Kailah Smith Kamila Resendiz Kevin Lizama Larissa Lugo Luis Ojeda Maria Saucedo Mariela Ayala Megan Przekurat Richard Rodriguez Rozella Mayo Ryan Gonzales Samantha Stewart Sarah Poulson Xavier Ramirez Yajaira Reyes Breanna Smith Brian Salazar Brock Barry Brooke Nolan Caiden Kelsey Carlos Acevedo Jr. Cynthia Salazar Damion Moye Jr. Daniela Aguayo Davis Galluzzo Diego Macias Edwin Ramirez Emily Gonzalez Erick Carrillo Evan Casey Frank Barrientos Griffin Watt Henry Reuney Jaela Rance Jamie Mapes Javier Medina Jessica Perez Joaquin Diaz Johnethen Serrano Jonathan Valencia Joshua Bermudez Joshua Richtertal Joshua Teutschman Kaysin Daum-Smith Kitzia Gomez Kyle Yang Manuel Jimenez Maraya Perez Maria Miranda Matthew Ceja Micah Brown Natalie Hernandez Raymond Carter Richard Romero Ronan Swanson Steven Christian Ezeike Veronica Banuelos Victoria Garcia Vivian Romero Yuriyah Manus APRIL Adam Zaal Alaia Smith Alexander Hernandez Alyssa Duarte Amanda Eberhard Ana Carrillo Angel Santos Angel Silva Anthony Randazzo Anthony Villalvazo Ashton Palmer Audriana Hurtado Bianca Perez Brandon Broadhurst Brayden McDermott MAY JUNE Spring 2012 • Page 7 DONOR RECOGNITION JANUARY TO MARCH 2012 MONETARY DONATIONS Allstate Giving Amgen Arrowhead United Way Cardenas Markets Edison Employee Campaign Edison International Innovative Federal Strategies John T.
