Valencia y la UNESCO se unen para la
salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural
inmaterial

La Directora General de la UNESCO, Irina Bokova, se ha felicitado de que la
ciudad de Valencia (España) haya decidido acoger una reunión de expertos a
principios de 2015 para debatir sobre los desafíos a los que hace frente la salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural inmaterial.

“El patrimonio cultural inmaterial es una de las formas más valiosas de expresión de los pueblos. Constituye un eje mediante el cual conseguimos entender
el mundo que nos rodea y nos permite transmitir los valores fundamentales de
nuestra identidad cultural a las generaciones futuras. A la vez, se trata de un
patrimonio extremadamente frágil. Aunque su pasado no ha debilitado su sentido ni su valor de cara a las comunidades, hoy en día se enfrenta a amenazas
inéditas ligadas a los procesos de globalización.”
“La cultura es un recurso renovable por excelencia, y como tal constituye una dimensión mayor del
desarrollo sostenible. Tenemos que evitar agotar algunas de sus manifestaciones y no permitir que
desaparezcan como resultado de una explotación insostenible y descontextualizada. En este sentido,
la reflexión que llevará a cabo la reunión de expertos resulta apropiada y urgente. El resultado final
debería de llevar a compartir buenas prácticas con vistas a la adopción de un código ético, especialmente en lo que se refiere a la sensibilización y promoción del patrimonio cultural inmaterial.”
La reunión de expertos tendrá lugar en Valencia en respuesta a la petición del Comité Intergubernamental del Comité para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial para empezar a trabajar
en un modelo de código ético que pueda servir de guía a los Estados Partes en sus acciones de salvaguardia, incluyendo actividades de promoción y sensibilización. El encuentro, que inaugurará la
Directora General de la UNESCO, se centrará en varios casos de estudio, entre ellos las famosas Fallas
de Valencia, una manifestación festiva y satírica en la que participa gran parte de la ciudadanía de las
poblaciones en que se celebra.
“Una vez más, España demuestra su enorme compromiso con la promoción y protección de la cultura como factor esencial del desarrollo. España es un actor importante en la vida de la Convención
para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, como demuestra tanto a través del apoyo
que ofrece a los países en desarrollo para reforzar sus capacidades de salvaguardia, como mediante
los numerosos elementos que ha conseguido inscribir en las listas de la Convención. Con doce elementos inscritos hasta la fecha, España está entre los cinco países mejor representados en ellas. La
Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) es también una aliada importante de la UNESCO gracias
a la Red Forum UNESCO – Universidad y Patrimonio (FUUP) y a la Cátedra UNESCO Fórum Universidad y Patrimonio”, concluyó la Directora General.

Un total de 26 nuevos sitios inscritos como
Patrimonio Mundial tras la reunión en Doha
Un total de 26 nuevos sitios han sido inscritos en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial, entre ellos el sistema vial andino Qhapaq Ñan,
durante las sesiones celebradas en Doha, anunció este miércoles la
UNESCO al término de su 38ª reunión. La lista del Patrimonio Mundial tiene ahora 1.007 sitios en 161 países, según el comunicado de
la UNESCO.
Entre ellos figura el delta del Okavango, en Botsuana, que fue el
sitio número 1.000, además de otros parajes naturales como Stevns
Klint (Dinamarca), el Parque Nacional del Himalaya (India) y el santuario de fauna y flora salvaje de la
cadena del monte Hamiguitan (Filipinas).

Nuevos sitios culturales incluidos son el sistema vial andino Qhapaq Ñan (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile,
Colombia, Ecuador, Perú), el centro histórico de Yeda y la puerta de La Meca (Arabia Saudí), el Gran
Canal de China y los asentamientos precolombinos con esferas de piedra del Diquís (Costa Rica).
También fueron incluidos en la lista la abadía de Corvey (Alemania), los cerros monumentales de
Poverty Point (Estados Unidos), el conjunto histórico y arqueológico de Bolgar (Rusia) y la gruta ornamentada de Pont d'Arc (Francia).
Otros de los sitios son el pozo Rani-ki-Vav (India), el yacimiento de Shahr-i Sokhta (Irán), la ciudadela
de Erbil (Irak), las cuevas de Maresha-Bet Guvrin (Israel), el paisaje vitícola del Piamonte (Italia), la
manufactura de seda de Tomioka (Japón), un tramo de la ruta de la seda (Kirguistán, China y Kazajistán) y las ciudades antiguas de Pyu (Myanmar).
La factoría Van Nelle (Países Bajos), la ciudad de Namhansanseong (Corea del Sur), las aldeas otomanas de Bursa y Cumalikizik (Turquía), la antigua ciudad de Pérgamo (Turquía) y el complejo de Trang
An (Vietnam) completan la nueva lista del patrimonio mundial.
Además, el comité de la UNESCO mantuvo la permanencia en la lista de cuatro sitios, incluidos la antigua Ciudad Maya y los bosques de Calakmul (México), y añadió tres a la del patrimonio en peligro:
el pueblo de Battir (Palestina), la ciudad de Potosí (Bolivia) y la reserva de caza de Selous (Tanzania).
En la inauguración de la cita de Doha, el pasado 15 de junio, el primer ministro catarí, Abdalá bin Jalifa al Zani, anunció una donación de diez millones de dólares (7,3 millones de euros) a un nuevo fondo
para proteger sitios del patrimonio mundial afectados por conflictos o desastres naturales.
El Comité del Patrimonio Mundial celebrará su próxima reunión en Bonn, Alemania, del 28 de junio
al 8 de julio de 2015.

Santa María: Haití pide a la UNESCO que envíe
una misión de expertos a examinar el pecio
descubierto en sus costas
En respuesta a un pedido del gobierno haitiano, la UNESCO
prestará asistencia técnica y enviará a Haití una misión de
expertos a raíz del descubrimiento de un pecio que podría
ser el de la carabela Santa María de Cristóbal Colón.
En una carta fechada el 12 de junio, la ministra de Cultura de
Haití, Monique Rocourt, pidió ayuda al Consejo científico de
la Convención de la UNESCO para la protección del patrimonio cultural subacuático de 2001 y solicitó el envío de una
misión de expertos al lugar del descubrimiento.
Así pues, en los próximos meses la UNESCO enviará una misión para evaluar el estado de ese patrimonio sumergido
frente a las costas de la ciudad de Cabo Haitiano, al norte
del país.

preocupación de la UNESCO respecto al pillaje de los sitios
sumergidos en aguas haitianas: “Estamos del lado de las autoridades en su lucha contra el patrimonio subacuático y aliento a otros Estados a unir esfuerzos para
ayudar a Haití a recuperar los objetos robados en estos sitios arqueológicos sumergidos, en particular en el que será objeto de estudio por parte de la misión de la UNESCO”, dijo Bokova.
El pasado 14 de mayo, el explorador submarino estadounidense Bill Clifford afirmó haber identificado el pecio de la nao Santa María, uno de los tres navíos de la expedición de Cristóbal Colón al Nuevo
Mundo. La Santa María encalló en un arrecife al norte de las costas haitianas y se hundió el 25 de
diciembre de 1492.
Varios equipos de exploradores visitaron este pecio en 2003, entre ellos el de Bill Clifford. Ese mismo
año se recuperó en ese lugar un cañón del siglo XV, hoy desaparecido.
Adoptada en 2001, la Convención de la UNESCO sobre el patrimonio cultural subacuático tiene como
objetivo la protección y preservación del patrimonio sumergido y el apoyo de la investigación y la cooperación internacional en ese ámbito. Los Estados que la han ratificado, hasta ahora 48, entre ellos
Haití, se comprometen a preservar ese patrimonio, a impedir la explotación comercial de los sitios
sumergido y a luchar contra el tráfico ilícito de los bienes objetos de pillaje submarino.
El Consejo Consultivo científico y técnico está formado por doce expertos de reputación internacional nombrados por la Conferencia de los Estados Partes en la Convención de 2001.

The World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize recognizes heroic efforts that preserve our modern heritage.

Competition - Mud House Design Competition - Deadline: 31 August 2014
Nka Foundation invites entries for Mud House Design 2014, an international architecture competition open to recent
graduates and students of architecture, design and others from around the world who think earth architecture can be
beautiful.
The challenge is to design a single-family unit of about 30 x 40 feet on a plot of 60 x 60 feet to be built by maximum
use of earth and local labor in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The client of your design is the middle-income family in
any township of your choice in the Ashanti Region. Total costs of constructing the design entry must not exceed $6,000; land value is excluded
from this price point. The entry should serve as an example to the local people that mud architecture can be beautiful and durable.

what we were and what we are: historic monuments, people, art, landscape, music, entertainment and local
traditions. Through the photographs will be possible to strengthen the dialogue between peoples, all supported by a
unique form of language: the emotion. So the images become the universal language of the «book on the world». All this will be part of baggage
in the long path of life that every individual will always bring with him and that will fill each day with new and interesting emotions.

2nd call for proposals for ASEF Creative Networks 2014/2015 - Deadline: 15 July
We are delighted to launch the 2nd call for proposals for ASEF Creative Networks.
This initiative encourages collaborations among networks in Asia & Europe, with the larger aim of
supporting sustained dialogue and collaboration between cultural professionals from both regions.
We invite cultural networks to submit joint proposals for multilateral activities that engage as many
partners and participants from the 49 member countries of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).We
particularly encourage initiatives such as capacity building workshops, mapping of good practices and expansion of networks to the other
region. The proposed projects should take place between 1 April and 30 November 2015.

Audiovisuales, por la que se convocan para el año 2014 ayudas para la conservación del patrimonio cinematográfico.

Winners of the 2014 Museums Australia National Awards announced
Museums Australia is pleased to introduce an all new National Award for institutions. The Museums
& Galleries National Awards, or MAGNAs, began in 2011 with three categories (see below). The
MAGNAs recognise excellent work nationally in the categories of exhibition, public programs and
sustainability projects.
The MAGNAs will be open to all Australian cultural collecting institutions, member and non-member.

Graphic Design Contest – First Prize € 2000 "AUTHENTICITY: LOCAL vs GLOBAL, The Nara Declaration,

On the occasion of the 18th ICOMOS General Assembly 2014 (International Council on Monuments and Sites) to be
held in Florence in November 2014, The Life Beyond Tourism® portal is promoting a competition for a graphic
design poster on the theme of authenticity from the current context of the Declaration of Nara that is turning twenty
years old in 2014.
The aim of the project is to give visibility to the concept of heritage, this term includes the tangible and the intangible, between East, West,
Africa and the Pacific. An exhibition of posters in the heart of Florence, explaining to the local community what is authenticity and how it is
designed and performed in different countries of the world. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Nara
Declaration, of Japan, through an in depth analysis of the topic.

The competition is aimed at multicisciplinary working teams comprising university students in
the field of Architecture, Engineering and Urbanism, led by university professors. The
research shall be focused on actions aimed towards more sustainable construction.

Competition Asks Young Architects to Transform Abandoned Factory into Cultural Center
In our progressively digitized world, factories are often left behind. Outdated and no longer capable of serving their original
purpose, these vast spaces become vacant and full of potential. A recent Young Architect Competition (YAC), entitled Space
to Culture, recognized this trend and called upon young minds to turn such a factory in Granarolo, Bologna into a center for
culture and entertainment. The competition asked entrants to focus on the idea of temporality and ensure the re-purposed

Nueva Biblioteca de la Universidad de Aberdeen / Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects
El 24 de septiembre de 2012, la Reina Elizabeth II de Gran Bretaña marcó la apertura oficial de la nueva biblioteca de
la Universidad de Aberdeen en Escocia. El edificio, que ganó en un concurso de arquitectura en 2005 por los
arquitectos Schmidt Hammer Lassen, está reemplazando a la antigua biblioteca de la universidad del año 1965 – la
Biblioteca Reina Madre.

Premios RIBA Londres 2014

Paddington Development Trust and the PCC of St Mary Magdalene Church are seeking to commission project management consultancy
services to support the development of our Heritage Lottery Fund project, Paddington’s Living Heritage at St Mary Magdalene.
The project will involve the restoration of the Grade 1 listed church - widely regarded as an outstanding example of neo-Gothic architecture and
design - as a new heritage centre in Paddington.
We are also seeing to recruit a volunteer Project Intern (P-T), who will work as part of the PDT team to investigate the heritage of our building
and our communities and develop material for learning activity and interpretation.

Nka Foundation invites entries for Mud House Design 2014, an international architecture competition open to recent
graduates and students of architecture, design and others from around the world who think earth architecture can be
beautiful.
The challenge is to design a single-family unit of about 30 x 40 feet on a plot of 60 x 60 feet to be built by maximum
use of earth and local labor in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The client of your design is the middle-income family in
any township of your choice in the Ashanti Region. Total costs of constructing the design entry must not exceed $6,000; land value is excluded
from this price point. The entry should serve as an example to the local people that mud architecture can be beautiful and durable.

Exploring the Archaeological Landscape of the Hamada Deserts of Western Sahara
On Friday the 6th of June 2014, I wandered along to the Pat Collins Reading Room at Waterman House, Hill St.,
Belfast to listen to the magnificent Dr Rowan McLaughlin speak about prehistory in Ulster. Specifically, he was
intent on tackling the impact that data from excavations in the last decade-and-a-half have had on our
understanding of prehistory in Ulster and Ireland generally. The MRB have been running a pretty excellent lecture
series over the last while and have a full schedule of speakers lined up until the end of 2014.

de la investigación científica han anunciado, en la sede de la UNESCO en París, el lanzamiento de una
convergencia, la Plataforma Océano y Clima 2015.
Se trata de una alianza de múltiples partes interesadas en colocar el Mar en el centro de los debates internacionales
sobre el clima. El anuncio se da en vísperas de la Conferencia de las Partes en la Convención Marco de Naciones
Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (COP21) que se celebrará en París en diciembre de 2015.

Should We Intervene to Save Isle Royale National Park Wolves - Michigan - USA
On a wild, remote island in Lake Superior called Isle Royale, gray wolves have lived and thrived for more than
60 years. In the forests on this island — which encompasses the majority of Michigan’s Isle Royale National
Park — a wolf population that grew to almost 50 individuals once contributed to a biodiverse, healthy
ecosystem.
In recent years, however, the number of wolves on Isle Royale has plummeted. In 2009, scientists from the
Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale project — begun in 1958 and now the longest continuous study of a predator-prey system in the world —
documented only 24 wolves living on the island. As of February 2014, that number had dwindled to nine — the second lowest total for the island
ever recorded.
Some blame climate change for the decrease. Others say it is just the natural order of things for species to come and go in a particular area.
But whatever the cause, the question for the future health of the island and the park is: should we intervene to save Isle Royale’s wolves

Three new species of Yellow-Shouldered bats found in museum collections - Field Museum - Chicago - Illinois

Scientists at Chicago’s Field Museum and international collaborators have reconstructed the phylogeny and
biological history for the Yellow-shouldered bats in the New World tropics, the region of the Earth surrounding the
equator. In-depth analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences uncovered three species new to science,
each having previously been confused with another species. Since 1960, when modern studies on this group began,
Sturnira has grown from eight species to 22. The newest additions were described in a new study, published online in ZooKeys.

Agir en faveur de la biodiversité : dépasser le « OU » pour engager le « ET » !
Qui dirait aujourd’hui qu’on peut développer une politique énergétique sans répondre aux enjeux de
production « ET » à ceux d’efficacité énergétique, qu’on peut penser transport sans penser développement
des axes « ET » des moyens de transport (voitures, bus, trains, etc.), qu’on peut penser éducation sans
penser construction des écoles « ET » formation des enseignants, etc. Dans le secteur de l’environnement, il
en va de même. On ne doit pas penser préservation des hotspots, développement d’aires protégées « OU »
gestion durable des territoires productifs et urbains mais appuyer les uns « ET » les autres. Il est même nécessaire d’appuyer les uns « POUR
» permettre l’amélioration des autres. L’objectif est ainsi de donner l’opportunité à l’ensemble des acteurs de répondre au défi planétaire que
représente la lutte contre la dégradation de l’environnement et plus spécifiquement de la biodiversité.

Les récifs coralliens hongkongais sont menacés par les plongeurs - Chine
On estime que lors des 50 dernières années 19% des récifs coralliens de la
planète ont été définitivement détruits et que 60% des survivants sont
actuellement en situation de crise écologique, dont 30% sont gravement menacés
par l'activité humaine (surexploitation des ressources maritimes et développement
côtier). La destruction de ces organismes présents dans les fonds marins depuis
des millions d'années met en péril les écosystèmes qu'ils assurent, menace la biodiversité et affaiblit la protection des littoraux contre l'érosion
et les houles cycloniques. C'est en Asie du Sud-Est que la situation est la plus grave: la surpêche et ses méthodes destructives ainsi que la
pollution due à l'activité côtière ont placé 80% des récifs en situation de "risque", dont 56% "à haut risque"
Le parc naturel marin du Bassin d'Arcachon voit le jour - France
Ségolène Royal et Frédéric Cuvillier annoncent la création du parc naturel marin du Bassin d'Arcachon à l'occasion de
la Journée mondiale de l'océan, dimanche 8 juin. Ce nouveau parc couvrira 420 km2 d'espace marin, dont la totalité
du bassin d'Arcachon, avec 127 km de linéaires côtiers. Le périmètre comprend plusieurs sites Natura 2000, dont le
parc sera gestionnaire. Il inclut également la réserve naturelle du Banc d'Arguin et celle des Prés salés d'Arès-Lège.

Carbon loss from tropical forests 'underestimated'
By Matt McGrath
The amount of carbon lost from tropical forests is being significantly underestimated, a new study reports.
In addition to loss of trees, the degradation of tropical forests by selective logging and fires causes large
amounts of "hidden" emissions.
The slow moving process has remained almost invisible to satellite observations in the Amazon.
Researchers say degradation in Brazil causes additional emissions equivalent to 40% of those from
deforestation.
The research has been published in the journal Global Change Biology.
The rapid removal of trees in the Amazon rainforest has been a significant source of global carbon emissions for many decades.
It is said to account for around 12% of human induced greenhouse gases, roughly the equivalent of both agriculture and transport.

Bilan du symposium dédié au changement climatique, à l'agriculture et aux forêts
Le symposium franco-allemand intitulé : "Changement Climatique, Agriculture et forêts", s'est tenu le 7 mai
2014, dans l'auditorium de l'Ambassade de France à Berlin. Organisé à l'initiative du Service pour la Science
et la Technologie de l'Ambassade, cette rencontre d'experts a permis de faire l'état des lieux des avancées
scientifiques dans nos deux pays sur les thèmes concernés. En amont de la COP 21 à Paris, ce Symposium
en a constitué l'un des évènements préparatoires. Il a permis de tracer le chemin commun franco-allemand
jusqu'à la COP 21 et faire naître une nouvelle initiative franco-allemande.
La régénération de la forêt à l'époque des dinosaures
Des restes fossilisés d'une forêt ancienne incendiée montrent un rétablissement écologique similaire à celui des
forêts de l'ère moderne. A une époque aussi lointaine que celle des dinosaures, soit il y a 66 millions d'années,
les forêts se renouvelaient après un incendie de la même façon qu'aujourd'hui, selon une équipe de chercheurs
de l'Université McGill et du Musée royal de la Saskatchewan.

How Legacy Architecture Shapes Our Experience of Place
I have been trying trying to understand what makes historic places special to so many of us. Part of it is that they are
relatively rare in the United States, I guess. For several decades our newer everyday architecture – our subdivisions,
strip malls, office buildings – has been simultaneously bland and deadening in its consistency. Every place looks like
every other place, or so it seems. While that isn’t literally true – some exciting buildings are being designed and built,
some nourishing new places are being fashioned – the best of our older buildings and neighborhoods have a
distinctiveness to them, almost by default…

Mayor of Venice and 34 others arrested over flood barriers corruption
As the 14th Architecture Biennale opened its doors to the press, the city of Venice was rocked by the news that
Giorgio Orsoni, mayor since 2010, has been arrested. He is charged with embezzlement, money laundering and
contract rigging, all in connection with the Mose construction project, the €7bn flood barriers designed to protect the
city from exceptional flooding events, and due to be completed in 2016. He is now under house arrest.

The consortium working on deltas includes the Institute of Water and Flood Management at Bangladesh University of

MediterraNew 2014 Winter/Spring Workshop "ideas for a buffer zone"
MediterraNew Workshop 2014 Winter/Spring edition was focused on gathering tools for a rst design approach on Amorgos
island, Cyclades (Greece).
The students were asked to imagine new strategies for an out of the box design concept that could o er new economic
and/or social
and cultural opportunities to the local community and at the same time t the delicate scenario of a UNESCO bu er zone.
As lectures outlined the set of operations and in the meantime fueled their creativity with interdisciplinary and
sometimes unconventional point of views, students e ort concentrated on imagining a new
set of guidelines to help unveil the cultural richness of the island. The result was a set of eight
interesting design concept that touched di erent aspects of sustainability, heritage
endorsement, mobility, natural landscape valorization and even spirituality.
Three of them were selected as best proposals focusing on sustainable negative growth,
crowdfunding strategies and camou age architecture for environmental and social
integration themes respectively. We assume them as MediterraNew 2014 Winter Workshop
students most interesting discussion themes, recommended for further research and
deeper analysis in the next MediterraNew Workshop: 2014 Fall Competition
from September 22nd to 30th on Amorgos island.

Paddington Development Trust and the PCC of St Mary Magdalene Church are seeking to commission project management consultancy
services to support the development of our Heritage Lottery Fund project, Paddington’s Living Heritage at St Mary Magdalene.
The project will involve the restoration of the Grade 1 listed church - widely regarded as an outstanding example of neo-Gothic architecture and
design - as a new heritage centre in Paddington.
We are also seeing to recruit a volunteer Project Intern (P-T), who will work as part of the PDT team to investigate the heritage of our building
and our communities and develop material for learning activity and interpretation.

Mémoires du Patrimoine a été fondée fin août 2012 sur une idée de Louise
Beyrand, sa présidente. Ancienne étudiante à l’Ecole du Louvre, Louise est
indignée par les terribles exactions culturelles commises dans le nord du Mali –
après le coup d’état du 22 mars 2012 – pendant la conquête et l’occupation de cette région par les armées islamistes.
Lassée de son sentiment d’impuissance et souhaitant s’engager en faveur des patrimoines menacés, elle décide de créer cette association,
ouverte à tous, mais très axée sur les jeunes en général et les étudiants en particulier : « Après avoir lancé un appel sur des forums fréquentés

decir, la conservación y mejora de la biodiversidad y los servicios ecosistémicos para incrementar la resiliencia
ecológica y reducir la vulnerabilidad de la población—, como estrategia para hacer frente a los efectos del cambio
climático, especialmente en las tierras áridas. Los ecosistemas que gozan de salud son más resistentes a los
peligros que presentan las alteraciones del clima.

Detroit's Big Three carmakers pledge $26m to protect city’s art - USA
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has secured a $26m contribution from three automakers to protect its art collection
and support local pension funds amid the city’s ongoing bankruptcy case. Ford pledged $10m each, as did General
Motors and its foundation, while Chrysler has committed $6m, the museum announced at a press conference today.
The DIA is also in talks with the insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Los Angeles-based Getty
Foundation, among others, about potential contributions, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Carbon loss from tropical forests 'underestimated'

The amount of carbon lost from tropical forests is being significantly underestimated, a new study reports.
In addition to loss of trees, the degradation of tropical forests by selective logging and fires causes large
amounts of "hidden" emissions.
The slow moving process has remained almost invisible to satellite observations in the Amazon.
Researchers say degradation in Brazil causes additional emissions equivalent to 40% of those from
deforestation.
The research has been published in the journal Global Change Biology.
The rapid removal of trees in the Amazon rainforest has been a significant source of global carbon emissions for many decades.
It is said to account for around 12% of human induced greenhouse gases, roughly the equivalent of both agriculture and transport.

examine migration as an adaptation option for the most vulnerable.

Should We Intervene to Save Isle Royale National Park Wolves - Michigan - USA
On a wild, remote island in Lake Superior called Isle Royale, gray wolves have lived and thrived for more than
60 years. In the forests on this island — which encompasses the majority of Michigan’s Isle Royale National
Park — a wolf population that grew to almost 50 individuals once contributed to a biodiverse, healthy
ecosystem.
In recent years, however, the number of wolves on Isle Royale has plummeted. In 2009, scientists from the
Wolves and Moose of Isle Royale project — begun in 1958 and now the longest continuous study of a predator-prey system in the world —
documented only 24 wolves living on the island. As of February 2014, that number had dwindled to nine — the second lowest total for the island
ever recorded.
Some blame climate change for the decrease. Others say it is just the natural order of things for species to come and go in a particular area.
But whatever the cause, the question for the future health of the island and the park is: should we intervene to save Isle Royale’s wolves

Bilan du symposium dédié au changement climatique, à l'agriculture et aux forêts
Le symposium franco-allemand intitulé : "Changement Climatique, Agriculture et forêts", s'est tenu le 7 mai
2014, dans l'auditorium de l'Ambassade de France à Berlin. Organisé à l'initiative du Service pour la Science
et la Technologie de l'Ambassade, cette rencontre d'experts a permis de faire l'état des lieux des avancées
scientifiques dans nos deux pays sur les thèmes concernés. En amont de la COP 21 à Paris, ce Symposium
en a constitué l'un des évènements préparatoires. Il a permis de tracer le chemin commun franco-allemand

La atenuación de daños representa un camino difícil pero necesario para evitar una catástrofe climática. Sin embargo, la
adaptación basada en la tierra es hoy indispensable para todas las comunidades. Se tarda sólo unas pocas horas en erosionar una pulgada de
suelo, pero muchos años en recuperarla después. Adoptemos ahora medidas de adaptación basadas en la tierra, y dotémonos de la resiliencia
necesaria para evitar horribles pérdidas en el futuro…

Importación, la Exportación y la Transferencia de Propiedad Ilícitas de Bienes Culturales
El 18 de abril de 2014, Chile depositó ante la Directora General su instrumento de ratificación de la Convención sobre las
Medidas que deben adoptarse para Prohibir e Impedir la Importación, la Exportación y la Transferencia de Propiedad Ilícitas
de Bienes Culturales.
El instrumento contenía la siguiente declaración:
“La República de Chile entiende que las disposiciones de la Convención no tienen carácter retroactivo y, en relación a su Artículo 13 letra d),
esta se aplicará a los bienes culturales extraídos del Estado de origen después de la entrada en vigor de la referida Convención para los
Estados concernidos.” [Original: español]
De conformidad con lo dispuesto en su Artículo 21, la Convención entrará en vigor para Chile tres meses después de la fecha de depósito de
este instrumento de ratificación, es decir, el 18 de julio de 2014.

From the architect. The Glacier Skywalk is a 1475-foot long (450-metre) interpretive walk carved and folded into the mountainous
landscape of Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The corten steel and glass structure cantilevers outward, overlooking
the Sunwapta Valley and facing the Athabasca Glacier situated in an icefield straddling the Continental Divide where the North
American watersheds diverge to the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Arctic Oceans.

Quand l'eau transite sous l'Antarctique
Il y a de l’eau liquide sous la calotte antarctique, et même de véritables lacs qui parfois vidangent toutes
leurs eaux. Des glaciologues du Laboratoire d’études en géophysique et océanographie spatiales
(LEGOS/OMP, UPS / CNRS / CNES / IRD) ont étudié, à l’aide de données d’altimétrie satellitaire, l'une des
plus grandes vidanges enregistrées sous le continent antarctique, celle du lac CookE2 qui s’est produite fin
2007. Ils viennent de mettre en évidence qu’une fois vidangée, l’eau de ce lac avait "cascadé" sous la glace
en direction du bord de la calotte en remplissant temporairement toute une série d'autres lacs. Cette étude révèle la forte dynamique du
système hydrologique sous-glaciaire de l’Antarctique.

Bauhaus Masters’ Houses Restored, Now Open to Public - Dessau - Germany
The Bauhaus school of design has made an indelible mark on the world of architecture, one that is still felt almost
seventy years after its closing. After moving the school from Weimar to Dessau in 1925 to avoid confrontation with
the Nazis, founder Walter Gropius designed a series of semi-detached homes for the design masters teaching at
the Bauhaus. This small neighborhood, nestled in a pine forest near the school building itself, was an idyllic home
for the likes of Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, and Gropius himself. They were abandoned in the 1930s as
Germany plunged into war, and suffered years of damage from military conflict and neglect. Renovations to the houses began in 1990, and now,
24 years later, the Bauhaus meisterhäuser have been completely reopened.

giacimento petrolifero. L'utilizzo del petrolio, prelevato dagli affioramenti
superficiali nella vallata, è documentato sin dall'antichità, ma soltanto nel 1868

può essere oggi ritrovato nella collezione di luoghi, architetture industriali, manufatti e memorie immateriali che si incontrano attraversando il
sito ex industriale di Vallezza. Il progetto di costruire un Parco Museo del Petrolio, di cui queste pagine sono premessa, nasce per promuovere
la conoscenza dei luoghi e, tramite la visita, l’apprendimento di un patrimonio di tecniche e saperi legati all’industria estrattiva del XIX e XX

Chaque profession a ses codes, acronymes et abrévia tions. Comme un radioamateur je dis des choses telles que «I'm QRV at 1900 UTC for a
QSO on 40 meters, 73! » sans même penser à la manière étrange dont cela peut être perçu par quelqu’un d’extérieur.
Bien que ces codes soient internationaux et standar disés afin de réduire les barrières linguistiques, dans le domaine de la régie c’est une autre
histoire. Mon anglais est correct mais je trébuche souvent sur les acronymes et abréviations, qui sont très courants dans le milieu des musées
américains, et que je ne comprends pas. Afin de faciliter la collaboration internationale, j’ai commencé à en regrouper certains avec l’aide des
aimables personnes contribuant à la liste de diffusion RC-AAM (Registrars Committee of the American Association of Museums = Comité des ré
gisseurs de l’association américaine des musées). Certains sont communs à l’ensemble des États-Unis, d’autres sont régionaux ou utilisés
uniquement dans certains musées. La liste sera mise à jour occasionnellement, si je tombe sur d’autres codes que je ne connais pas ou si
quelqu’un propose de nouveaux termes.

Detroit's Big Three carmakers pledge $26m to protect city’s art - USA
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has secured a $26m contribution from three automakers to protect its art collection
and support local pension funds amid the city’s ongoing bankruptcy case. Ford pledged $10m each, as did General
Motors and its foundation, while Chrysler has committed $6m, the museum announced at a press conference today.
The DIA is also in talks with the insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Los Angeles-based Getty
Foundation, among others, about potential contributions, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Scientists at Chicago’s Field Museum and international collaborators have reconstructed the
phylogeny and biological history for the Yellow-shouldered bats in the New World tropics, the
region of the Earth surrounding the equator. In-depth analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA
sequences uncovered three species new to science, each having previously been confused with
another species. Since 1960, when modern studies on this group began, Sturnira has grown from eight species to 22. The newest additions
were described in a new study, published online in ZooKeys.

La densité des populations en Asie, l’explosion démographique de l’Afrique constituent des facteurs de pression
extrêmement forts sur les milieux naturels. Il est particulièrement difficile de lutter contre le morcellement et la
dégradation des habitats naturels lié à l’exploitation des terres au profit des activités agro-alimentaires,
industrielles, minières, à l’expansion urbaine, au développement des infrastructures de transport et d’énergie … Les
modèles de conservation, constitués autour des parcs nationaux et des réserves naturelles, sont nécessaires, mais
ne résisteront que partiellement aux pressions économiques, démographiques et climatiques. Pour retrouver des espaces naturels, il convient
aussi de reconquérir des terres, au cœur de forêts dégradées, de champs de pétrole épuisés … C’est ici tout l’enjeu de la restauration

reapertura más que esperada a juzgar por la afluencia de visitantes que en las primeras semanas ha superado los 5.000
diarios. Aunque el museo sólo ha permanecido cerrado al público los últimos dos años y medio de los seis que han durado las

Student Member Spotlight: Ann Glennie and Allison Smith
Ann Glennie and Allison Smith became interested in the study of archaeology before college, but it was under the
influence of great professors at the College of William and Mary and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
respectively that they both discovered the desire to pursue archaeology as a career. The Archaeological Institute of
America saw their passion for classical archaeology at the 2014 Annual Meeting in Chicago, where they won the
award for “Best Poster Designed Entirely by Students,” for a poster created with colleagues about excavations at the
site of Cosa (near the modern village of Ansedonia, Italy). Currently, they are both first-year Ph.D. students at Florida State University,
continuing their fascinating projects and staying involved with the AIA.

Arqueólogos encuentran una tumba de hace 5.600 años en Egipto
Un equipo de arqueólogos ha encontrado en el sur de Egipto una tumba y una momia bien conservadas de hace
5.600 años, anunció el Ministerio egipcio de Antigüedades.
La agencia AFP informó que la tumba es anterior al reinado de Narmer, fundador de la Primera Dinastía, que unificó
el Alto y Bajo Egipto en el siglo 31 a.C.
La tumba se encontró en la región de Kom al Ahmar, entre Luxor y Asuán, donde se hallaba Hierakonpolis, la
principal ciudad y capital del reino del Alto Egipto.
Los arqueólogos encontraron la estatua de un hombre con barba, hecha con marfil, y la momia, que parecía haber muerto en la adolescencia.

Nel sottosuolo di Vallezza, sull'Appennino parmense di Fornovo di Taro, vi è un
giacimento petrolifero. L'utilizzo del petrolio, prelevato dagli affioramenti
superficiali nella vallata, è documentato sin dall'antichità, ma soltanto nel 1868
viene rilasciata la prima concessione governativa per la ricerca e lo sfruttamento
degli idrocarburi con finalità industriali. Nell'anno 1905 il Cavaliere Luigi Scotti,
fonda a Vallezza, la Società Petrolifera Italiana. Ha così inizio la vicenda della Miniera di Vallezza, destinata a modificare l'identità e la cultura
materiale di Fornovo di Taro e dei suoi abitanti e permanere nella memoria dei luoghi. Il patrimonio di tecniche e di competenze del passato
può essere oggi ritrovato nella collezione di luoghi, architetture industriali, manufatti e memorie immateriali che si incontrano attraversando il
sito ex industriale di Vallezza. Il progetto di costruire un Parco Museo del Petrolio, di cui queste pagine sono premessa, nasce per promuovere
la conoscenza dei luoghi e, tramite la visita, l’apprendimento di un patrimonio di tecniche e saperi legati all’industria estrattiva del XIX e XX
secolo in Italia.

From the architect. The Mataró Council moves to provide the city with a new mixed-use space (public/private), for both collective
activities (workshops, exhibitions, etc…) and offices. The intervention is performed in the main hall of the Can Minguell’s factory
complex (1850). The building has a ground floor and three high floors. His structure is composed of cast iron pillars and braced
timbrel vaults. The double pitched roof rests on wooden trusses. The facade shows various changes and additions made o ver
time.

The ‪É glise Saint-Révérien in the Nièvre town of Saint-Révérien is named after one of the earliest
evangelists in Gaul. Around the year 270, Pope Felix I sent Reverianus, his friend Paulus, and ten
companions (whose names have been lost over time) from their native Italy to Gaul to propogate the
Christian religion. I presume that they were somewhat successful in life, but after the Emperor Aurelian
had them beheaded in Autun in 273, they were canonized and were venerated by their followers.

Gallarus Oratory, Dingle, Co. Kerry - Ireland
The iconic Gallarus oratory is located in the heart of the Kerry Gaeltacht, on the very western tip of the Dingle
peninsula, Co. Kerry. With its distinctive appearance, often referred to as resembling an upturned boat, the
church is now a well-known tourist attraction. Constructed entirely out of locally sourced stone, the church is
corbel vaulted. This entailed gradually overlapping the stones, so that each course projected slightly inwards
until the arch was closed at the apex of the roof. An ancient technique, this means of roof construction was
employed at the great Neolithic tomb at Newgrange.

In “Puerto Ricans struggle over once-grisly Oso Blanco prison,” Danica Soto writes about Oso Blanco, once known as
the “Alcatraz of the Caribbean.” She says that the Puerto Rican government wants to demolish it and build an office
park aimed at attracting high-tech businesses, but preservationists and historians say “No.” Now that partial
demolition has started, the former penitentiary is “at the center of a struggle between those who want to preserve the
art-deco behemoth and others who want to tear it down.”

ENCATC, in partnership with ECF, invites young researchers to apply for the 11th Cultural Policy Research Award (CPRA).
Initiated in 2003 and now in its 11th edition, the Award is entering a new phase incorporating three major changes. First, the
Award will be bestowed up a young researcher who has successfully defended his or her PhD Thesis and whose work is of
the greatest excellence. Second, the 11th CPRA will also be the first time research on issues of cultural management is
welcome in the call for applications. Finally, to go beyond its initial European focus, the call for applications is open to

26 nuevos sitios inscritos en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial tras la reunión en Doha
La inscripción del sitio número 1000 y del primer sitio de Myanmar en la lista del patrimonio mundial, estuvieron entre
los aspectos más destacados de la 38ª sesión del Comité del patrimonio mundial, que terminó el 25 de junio en Doha
(Qatar). Durante esta sesión, 26 nuevos sitios fueron inscritos en la lista. Estas adiciones traen a 1007 el número total
de sitios del patrimonio mundial, en 161 países. La sesión, presidida por la Jequesa Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin
Khalifa Al Thani, inauguró con el anuncio de bin Abdullah bin Nasser primer ministro de Qatar Khalifa Al Thani, de una
donación de $10 millones para un nuevo fondo para proteger patrimonio afectado por conflictos o desastres naturales. El Delta del Okavango,

NOAA, Partners Predict Average 'Dead Zone' for Gulf of Mexico; Slightly Above-average in Chesapeake Bay
Hypoxic zones are areas in the ocean of such low oxygen concentration that animal life suffocates and dies, and
as a result are sometimes called "dead zones." One of the largest dead zones forms in the Gulf of Mexico every
spring. Each spring as farmers fertilize their lands preparing for crop season, rain washes fertilizer off the land
and into streams and rivers.
Later this year, researchers will measure oxygen levels in both bodies of water. The confirmed size of the 2014
Gulf hypoxic zone will be released in late July or early August, following a mid-July monitoring survey led by the Louisiana Universities Marine
Consortium. The final measurement in the Chesapeake will come in October following surveys by the Chesapeake Bay Program's partners from
the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

A photo album depicting troves of precious art works looted by the Nazis during World War
II was donated Thursday to the National Archives, America's repository of historical
artifacts. The album is one of 39 "Hitler albums" -- essentially a catalogue of art confiscated
by troops operating under orders from Der Fuerher. The book contains photos of looted
paintings and other cultural artifacts swiped from France. The album was given to the National Archives at a ceremony that fell on the
anniversary of the war's end in Europe. The event was attended by Harry Ettlinger, 88, one of six surviving soldiers from a US army unit tasked
with recovering thousands of art works confiscated by the Nazis.

Modernism Prize. The prize will be awarded this fall to a design professional or firm in recognition of innovative

Bauhaus Masters’ Houses Restored, Now Open to Public - Dessau - Germany
The Bauhaus school of design has made an indelible mark on the world of architecture, one that is still felt almost
seventy years after its closing. After moving the school from Weimar to Dessau in 1925 to avoid confrontation with
the Nazis, founder Walter Gropius designed a series of semi-detached homes for the design masters teaching at
the Bauhaus. This small neighborhood, nestled in a pine forest near the school building itself, was an idyllic home
for the likes of Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, and Gropius himself. They were abandoned in the 1930s as
Germany plunged into war, and suffered years of damage from military conflict and neglect. Renovations to the houses began in 1990, and now,
24 years later, the Bauhaus meisterhäuser have been completely reopened.

The international Master’s programme World Heritage Studies at BTU Cottbus
The Studies was developed around the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural
Heritage. Its curriculum reflects diverse approaches to the concept of heritage, such as the link between culture and nature,
tangible and intangible values, or conservation and development.
Students will acquire knowledge and skills needed for the protection, management and presentation of cultural and natural
heritage sites.
The programme cooperates with UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre in Paris, the German Commission for UNESCO, as well as many other

Le décret de classement du parc naturel régional du Marais poitevin est paru au Journal officiel ce mercredi 21 mai,

Southern California. Originally published by AIArchitect as “Pacific Coast Sun Rises on Modernist House
Restorations,” this article investigates the thoughtful restorations of three homes designed by the pioneering
modernists Rudolph Schindler, John Lautner, and Charles and Ray Eames.

Reforma y Rehabilitación de la Nave Industrial Can Minguell / Toni Gironès - 2010 - Barcelona - Spain
From the architect. The Mataró Council moves to provide the city with a new mixed-use space (public/private), for both collective
activities (workshops, exhibitions, etc…) and offices. The intervention is performed in the main hall of the Can Minguell’s factory
complex (1850). The building has a ground floor and three high floors. His structure is composed of cast iron pillars and braced
timbrel vaults. The double pitched roof rests on wooden trusses. The facade shows various changes and additions made o ver
time.

David Chipperfield Picked to Remodel Selfridges’ London Store - United Kingdom
David Chipperfield has been selected by Selfridges to remodel their flagship London store, creating a new 4,600
square metre accessories department and creating a new entrance to the Eastern side of the building. The additions
by Chipperfield are part of the store’s larger 5-year, £300 million project which also includes work by Gensler to
better connect the original 1909 building by Daniel Burnham with the later addition behind.

The Cultural Landscapes and Cultural Routes NSC has met annually since 2010 in Canberra to exchange information on Cultural Landscapes
and Cultural Routes; discuss common issues, theories and practice, design and implement projects. Click here for the objectives, scope,
policies and procedures, copies of reports and the minutes of annual meetings of this NSC. One of the objectives is to provide opportunities for

Ratificación por Chile de la Convención sobre las Medidas que deben adoptarse para Prohibir e Impedir la
Importación, la Exportación y la Transferencia de Propiedad Ilícitas de Bienes Culturales
El 18 de abril de 2014, Chile depositó ante la Directora General su instrumento de ratificación de la Convención sobre las
Medidas que deben adoptarse para Prohibir e Impedir la Importación, la Exportación y la Transferencia de Propiedad Ilícitas
de Bienes Culturales.
El instrumento contenía la siguiente declaración:
“La República de Chile entiende que las disposiciones de la Convención no tienen carácter retroactivo y, en relación a su Artículo 13 letra d),
esta se aplicará a los bienes culturales extraídos del Estado de origen después de la entrada en vigor de la referida Convención para los
Estados concernidos.” [Original: español]
De conformidad con lo dispuesto en su Artículo 21, la Convención entrará en vigor para Chile tres meses después de la fecha de depósito de
este instrumento de ratificación, es decir, el 18 de julio de 2014.

Egyptian artefacts recovered after looting, now on show in Cairo
Around 200 stolen artefacts, recovered since Egypt’s 2011 revolution, are now on show at the Egyptian Museum in
Cairo in an exhibition that runs for three months. Most of the objects were recovered abroad, while some 60 were
seized in Egypt before they could leave the country.

Museum in Bordeaux exhibits three works by Fedor Lowenstein confiscated by the Nazis - France
The three works shown here were part of a consignment that Fédor Löwenstein tried to send to an American gallery.
Seized at the port of Bordeaux, they were sent to the Jeu de Paume in Paris, to be stored in the “Salle des Martyrs”,
a room to which works in a style condemned by the Nazi aesthetic were relegated.

One of 39 "Hitler albums" of looted Nazi art given to the National Archives in Washington
A photo album depicting troves of precious art works looted by the Nazis during World War II was donated Thursday
to the National Archives, America's repository of historical artifacts. The album is one of 39 "Hitler albums" -essentially a catalogue of art confiscated by troops operating under orders from Der Fuerher. The book contains
photos of looted paintings and other cultural artifacts swiped from France. The album was given to the National
Archives at a ceremony that fell on the anniversary of the war's end in Europe. The event was attended by Harry
Ettlinger, 88, one of six surviving soldiers from a US army unit tasked with recovering thousands of art works confiscated by the Nazis.

concientización. Invitamos a nuestros lectores a reflexionar sobre la cuestión. Cabe preguntarse cuántas
comunidades son despojadas de porciones de su patrimonio cultural. Cuántos conocimientos científicos se
perdieron y se siguen perdiendo con el saqueo de sitios arqueológicos y paleontológicos. Cuántos ciudadanos
vieron y ven frustrados sus derechos a acceder a libros (o parte de ellos) que fueron robados de bibliotecas
públicas, o a documentos y fotografías sustraídos de archivos. Cuántas personas han sido privadas de apreciar objetos históricos y artísticos
que formaron parte de colecciones de museos. Las generaciones futuras se verán afectadas por los despojos que nuestra generación no sea
capaz de evitar.
