“next stop azusa!” free yard sale dates for remainder of 2013 azusa
April 2013 “NEXT STOP AZUSA!” We’re certain that you recognize that slogan as belonging to the Metro Gold Line; which will soon make its way to Azusa from Pasadena. However, the Gold Line is not the only thing coming to Azusa from Pasadena. The Convalescent Aid Society (CAS), which provides free durable medical equipment loans for in-home convalescing has also established a satellite office in the city as well. CAS celebrated the opening of its new satellite office at the Azusa Health Center at 150 N. Azusa Avenue on March 8, 2013. The official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is coming in April or early May. The new office is made possible by a grant from the Canyon City Foundation and free office space is provided by the Health Center’s administrator, El Proyecto Del Barrio. It is open every Friday from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., and will be more accessible to Azusa and East San Gabriel Valley clients in need of free in-home convalescing equipment. The office telephone number is 626- 422-9660. “This is the first time in the 90 year history of CAS that a satellite office has been established outside of Pasadena,” said Jesse Avila, Jr., CAS Director of Operations. “As an Azusan, I am overjoyed that I will be working in my community to provide full access of our services to Azusa and East Valley residents.” Established in Pasadena in 1923, the mission of Convalescent Aid Society is to provide the free loan of durable medical equipment (DME) for in-home use, in order to improve the quality of life, restore and prolong mobility, promote continued independence and autonomy, and champion sustainable and cost effective re-use, repair and recycling of convalescing medical equipment. Nearing its 90th anniversary of continuously serving the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley area, CAS is the oldest and best established service provider of its kind in the nation. At a recent national gathering of DME service providers, CAS was acknowledged for its volume of services, which far surpass those of similar organizations in major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, San Francisco, and St. Louis. Their recently reconfigured client/donor data base and equipment tracking system reflects all current DME loans--which include hospital beds, bathroom safety equipment, walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility assistive devices--to almost 11,000 households, with many of those households showing more than one client and many clients borrowing multiple pieces of DME. Following is a listing of the many services provided by CAS to its clients: • Loan of durable medical equipment (DME), including hospital beds, mobility assistive devices, and bathroom safety equipment, at no cost to clients for an indefinite time period, • Follow-up phone calls throughout lifetime of loan to determine suitability of equipment and well-being of client, • Re-use/repair/recycle and sanitization of all equipment at our facility, • Reference and referral to social, senior health and community services as needed, and • Representation of non-profit and DME communities and service providers at County, State and National levels. “As the only organization of its kind in Los Angeles County, the CAS Board of Directors--with the support from sponsors like Athens Services and Visiting Angels Senior Home Care--is committed to increasing the overall acquisition and distribution of frequently requested new and re-used DMEs,” adds Avila. FREE YARD SALE DATES FOR REMAINDER OF 2013 The next first free yard sale in the City of Azusa is scheduled for April 6 and 7, followed by June 8 and 9, September 7 and 8 and December 7 and 8. Brent McKinney, manager, electric transmission and distribution at City Utilities of Springfield, Mo., and chair of APPA’s RP3 Review Panel, presented the awards on March 25 during the association’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference held in Kissimmee, Florida. “These RP3 designated utilities should be proud,” said McKinney. “They stand out as utilities that are continuing to strive for excellence for their customers and their communities.” The RP3 program recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement. Criteria within each category are based on sound business practices and represent a utility wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. “Azusa Light & Water is pleased to be recognized as one of the most reliable electric providers in the industry,” said Azusa Light & Water’s Director of Utilities, George Morrow. “We understand how important reliable electric service is to the health and welfare of our customers. Our employees work hard to ensure continuous service and to provide fast response when problems do arise.” To earn RP3 designation, utilities must submit to a review committee verification of their practices and accomplishments in reliability, safety, training and system (left to right) Azusa City Manager, James Makshanoff; Mayor, Joeseph R. improvement.
