I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.” Parish Office Hours Monday: 9AM-6PM (closed between 12:30-1:30PM) Tuesday thru Friday: 9AM-7PM Saturday: 10AM-2PM Sunday: Closed From the Pastor • Del Pastor Dear Friends of St. Louise, Queridos Amigos de Santa Luisa: As most of you know, the Sacrament of the Sick went through a renewal with Vatican II. For several centuries this sacrament had been called “extreme unction” (meaning, final anointing) and reserved for the last moments of life. The Second Vatican Council reexamined the sacrament in light of Scripture and the Church’s early practice, concluding that “‘extreme unction,’ which may also and more properly be called ‘anointing of the sick,’ is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as any one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for [that person] to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.” (Second Vatican Council, Const. (Concilio Vaticano Segundo, Const. Sacrosanctum concilium, 73) I bring up this topic because in the last few months numerous people, and in some cases even active parishioners, have waited until the very last moment to ask for their loved ones to be anointed. Many have even made comments like, “I didn’t call earlier because I didn’t want to scare Mom [or Dad].” The other week I told a man that I had come to anoint him and he looked at me with horror, as if I was giving him a death wish! Once I assured him that the sacrament is meant to give him the strength of Jesus in his illness, he seemed to calm down. The norms of the Church provide more detailed guidance about receiving this beautiful sacrament, including: The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if, during the same illness, the person’s condition becomes more serious. A sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. Sick children are to be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament. In a case of doubt whether a child has sufficient use of reason, the sacrament is to be conferred. We need to avoid two extremes in connection with this sacrament. First, we should avoid waiting till the last moment to ask for and receive the sacrament – instead, receive it and the strength of Jesus it confers during a difficult illness. Second, we should avoid approaching the sacrament for an illness or condition that is not serious. As the General Introduction to Pastoral Care of the Sick states, “Those who are seriously ill need the special help of God's grace in this time of anxiety, lest they be broken in spirit and, under the pressure of temptation, perhaps weakened in their faith.” Yours in Christ, Fr. Gary Zender Next week: The Pope’s new letter on the family. In addition, the 7th grade coordinated "Operation Rice Bowl" and participated in a Hunger Banquet during Holy Week.
