T
he history of hip-hop music and
culture, from its modest origins
on city streets through its evolution
into a worldwide phenomenon, is
the focus of an upcoming photo
exhibit at the Museum of the City
of New York.
One of the featured photographers is Bronx
native Joe Conzo, Jr., also known as “Joey.”
Born and raised in the borough, Conzo
acquired his passion for photography
attending the Agnes Russell School at
Columbia University. He later continued his
formal artistic education at the School of
Visual Arts.
In his early years, he bore witness to the
volatile state of South Bronx community
activism, and to the vanguard world of New
York’s Puerto Rican cultural music scene –
and to hip-hop.
“Hip-Hop
Revolution:
Photographs
by Janette Beckman, Joe Conzo, and
Martha Cooper,” will bring together the
work of Conzo, one of three of acclaimed
photographers of the hip-hop
scene, who documented the birth
of the cultural movement, with
its accompanying music, dance,
fashion and style.
Featuring more than 100
photographs taken in New York
City between 1977 and 1990,
“Hip-Hop Revolution” will be
on display between April 1 and
September 18, 2015.
The exhibition is a follow-up to the City
Museum’s 2014 exhibition on graffiti art,

“Hip-hop is yet another incredibly vibrant
example of how the world has been shaped
by what started in New York,” said Susan
Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel
Director of the Museum of the
City of New York. “You can see
this dynamic and influential music
and culture come to life in this
exhibition through the powerful
photographs of three wonderful
photographers.”
Legendary
performers
documented in the photographs
include Afrika Bambaataa, Run DMC, Rock
Steady Crew, Beastie Boys, Kool Herc and
Cold Crush Brothers.
“We’re seeing in these photographs the
foundation of what many people consider a
way of life today,” said Sean Corcoran, the
museum’s Curator of Prints and Photographs.
“These photographers were part of
propagating the culture to ever expanding
audiences,” added Corcoran. “This is really a
New York story.”
Designed by Marissa Martonyi, the
exhibition will include listening stations for
the music of performers documented in the
photos, as well as flyers about early hip-hop
performances, newspaper clippings, books
and other artifacts of the era.
The museum will also offer a variety of
public programs in conjunction with the
exhibition.

Suicide prevention
program focuses on
Latina teens

H
is mother killed herself when
he was 11.
“It is personal for me,” said
Assemblymember Luis Sepulveda, whose
mother committed suicide at the age of 33 –
after her fourth attempt.
Today, as an elected official, he is an
advocate for suicide prevention.
Together with State Senator Jeffrey Klein
and Dr. Rosa Gil, Comunilife President and
CEO, Sepulveda took part in an expert panel
and guidance counselor roundtable to raise
awareness of the suicide epidemic for Latina
teens.
They were joined this past Fri., Mar. 20th
by Jennifer L. Humensky, Assistant Professor
of Clinical Health Policy and Management
at Columbia University and New York State
Psychiatric Institute, parents and Bronx
school guidance counselors.

Latina teens represent nearly one out of
every six suicide attempts in the U.S.
Specialists at Columbia University have
been evaluating LIP program for the past 2
years to measure its impact on the participants
it serves.
The findings have been encouraging.
In the past two years, the program has
served more than 106 girls city-wide. 91
percent speak English fluently and 75 percent
speak Spanish fluently.

Due to a federal court order delaying
immigration relief, the federal government
will NOT begin accepting requests for
Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and

Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), nor for
the expanded Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA), until later in 2015.
This delay in the implementation of the
immigration programs may lead to more
immigrant New Yorkers being defrauded
by con artists posing as immigration
attorneys or authorized immigration
representatives, who charge fees for
services that are never provided.
Immigrant consumers should make
sure to get advice from the right
person - whether you are renewing your
Green Card, applying for naturalization
or citizenship, or trying to choose the right
forms.
Please note:
• Only lawyers and representatives
accredited by the Board of Immigration
Appeals (BIA) can provide advice,
assistance and representation on
immigration matters.
• Anyone providing immigration services
must also comply with strict rules
governing contracts and advertising.
• Call a qualified provider – you can get a
free referral by calling the New York
State New Americans Hotline at 800566-7636. • Make sure to get a contract, and don’t
sign it until it has been explained to you.
• Pay with a check or money order. Don’t
pay cash.
• Always get a receipt.
• Get and maintain copies of all forms and
documents sent on your behalf.
• Don’t sign blank forms or documents that
you don’t understand.
• Get a second opinion

Restoring the
faith in justice
T
his week, Judge William
Garnett of the State Supreme
Court ruled against my office’s
request to unseal the grand jury
minutes in the Eric Garner case.
While I am disappointed in his
decision, I will not give up on
the pursuit of justice and am
appealing this decision.
We have all seen the videos of what
happened on the day Eric Garner was
killed. I was saddened, disheartened, and
confused that such concrete evidence was
not enough to return an indictment and lead
to a fair trial.
I strongly believe that the public has the
right to know what happened in these grand
jury proceedings, which is why I have been
in court fighting to unseal the minutes.
The unfortunate case of Eric Garner has
been one of the most public news stories
of the past year and the public deserves an
explanation. We are not interested in the
identities of the jurors or witnesses, but
instead, in the facts of the case.
“Secrecy only
breeds suspicion”
There are questions of this case that must
be answered.
What was said during the proceedings that
discredited the video evidence of a banned
police tactic: the chokehold? What evidence
was produced? What was the explanation
of law? Why did the proceedings take nine
weeks? How many witnesses were there?

have an effective criminal justice system,
we must have a structure that is

an injustice to the

to the city of New
York. Transparency
and discourse will
only lead to positive
change.
I am appealing this decision because not
only does the public have a right to know
what happened in the grand jury proceedings
of this case, but because I am dedicated to
reforming our entire criminal justice
system to one that reflects the values of
our modern society.
To restore the public’s faith in our
criminal justice system we must shine
light on a system that has operated in
secrecy.
The public must know and trust that
our criminal justice system is objective
and that the process is balanced, fair,
and impartial.

Me entristeció, desanimó y confundió que tales
pruebas concretas no fuesen suficientes para la
formulación de cargos y dar lugar a un juicio justo.
Creo firmemente que el público tiene
derecho a saber lo que pasó en
esos procedimientos del gran
jurado, por lo que he estado
luchando en la corte para revelar
los minutos. El caso desafortunado de Eric
Garner ha sido una de las noticias más públicas
del pasado año y el público merece una
explicación. No estamos interesados
en la identidad de los miembros del

T
he Bronx is getting some
attention, by way of Queens.
Eulogy, a short film set in the Bronx’s
Albanian community, has been selected to the
Queens World Film Festival.
Produced by film company onetencrew, the
13-minute short portrays the loyalty and bond
between brothers in a tight-knit family.
Writer and director Don Capria, who is of
Italian heritage, said he had a desire to present
a story involving the ethnic experience in
New York City.
“But I didn’t think I could tell a tale
of Italian-Americans, which has been
portrayed in films countless times, often in a
stereotypical way,” he remarked.
Capria, who has several Albanian friends
from the Bronx, was intrigued by the close
nature of their relationships.
“There’s something really hidden and
special about the Albanian community, and
it was nice to be able to tell that story,” said
Capria, who was raised in Westchester. “It’s
not a community that gets a lot of attention.”
Filmed entirely in the Bronx, the film
follows the story of Zef Celaj, who is serving
time in prison for a crime his brother Martin
committed.
Zef discovers that his brother took his own
life, and is let out of prison to deliver the

loyalty and redemption,” explained Capria.
Eulogy has a “dark and ominous tone,” said
Capria, with much of the film shot in the rain.
The cast includes Federico Casteluccio,
best known for portraying mobster Furio
Giunta on HBO TV’s The Sopranos, as well
as Brooklyn rapper and actor Kaves.
The film’s entire cast was nominated for
Best Actor in a Short Narrative Film at the
Queens Festival, where Eulogy had its world
premiere on March 20.
Capria hopes to screen Eulogy at film
festivals throughout 2015 — the short has
been submitted to more than a dozen other
festivals internationally.
“I look forward to showing it again in New
York City soon,” said Capria.

we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
I have undertaken a parks photo project
in recent weeks. As I traveled from park
to park, I read excerpts from a book titled
The New Parks Beyond the Harlem by John
Mullaly. Originally published in 1887, it
has been reprinted by the Bronx County
Historical Society.
Mullaly was an editor and news reporter,
and an advocate for the Bronx Park System.
He founded the New York Park Association
in 1881. His efforts led to him being referred
to as the “Father of the Bronx Park System.”
The book highlights over 4000 acres of
free park space, specifically the preservation
of six major parks prior to the development
of the Bronx. Those parks were Pelham
Bay, Van Cortlandt, Bronx Park, Claremont,
Crotona and St. Mary’s. The larger of
these parks were connected by parkways
– Mosholu, Pelham, Bronx and Crotona
Parkways.
The land we now know as Crotona

Park was once part of the Morris estate. In
1848, portions of the land were sold and
the Bathgate family purchased some 127.5
acres. Under the ownership of the Bathgate
family, they allowed Indian Lake to be used
by the public for recreational purposes. In
1888, it was acquired by the city for the
Bronx Park System.
On my visit, I entered Crotona Park at
Crotona Avenue East. Paved pathways lead

Lake. The view from the bridge includes
the park’s beautiful boathouse. Constructed
under the Works Progress Administration,
the boathouse serves the centerpiece of the
park and the site of the Urban Park Rangers
maintenance staff.
As you cross the bridge, the 1.5 acre
amphitheater is straight ahead. It was odd
to see the space empty and quiet as it was;
during the summer months, the theater serves
as the site of “Tools of War,” the public hiphop jams. Some of my favorite features are
the natural rock outcroppings and the huge
boulder that sits atop the amphitheater.
I made my way across Crotona Avenue
to gain access to the west side of the park.
Numerous species of trees are present,
making it an extra delightful walk. Baseball
fields and tennis courts were unoccupied,
and a gentleman was quietly practicing his
golf swing on a grassy patch of the north
section of the park. The laughter of children
playing in the playgrounds was only
occasionally interrupted by vehicular traffic.

The massive building was opened in 1936,
also constructed by the Works Progress
Administration. The structure looks like a
castle, and was designed by architect Aymar
Embury II.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month,
it’s important to note that this month also
marks the 23rd anniversary of the founding
of the Friends of Crotona Park. It was
formed in 1992 by a group of women who
came together to preserve and promote this
beautiful park. The group is still active, and
presently Portia Cook-Dyrenforth serves as
the Administrator of Crotona Park.
If you haven’t visited Crotona Park, I urge
you to, and if you have visited in the past, I
encourage you to return. This beautiful park
is the largest in the South Bronx, and a true
gem in the middle of a densely populated
area.

in the borough between two IT
industry firms.
TEKsystems, a leading provider of IT
staffing and talent management services, has
teamed up with Per Scholas, New York City’s
largest IT workforce development program,
to offer enhanced technology training and
job placement services for underserved
communities.
Locally, TEKsystems is providing financial
support and other resources to the Per Scholas
site on East 138th Street in the Bronx, where
students can enroll in a free, eight-week
course that prepares them to obtain industryrecognized CompTIA A+ certification and
begin careers as desktop support specialists,
IT analysts and network field technicians.
Plinio Ayala, President and CEO of Per
Scholas, said that there are currently 500
students enrolled in the two-month Bronx
training course, which is nearly at capacity.

as long as four months. Classes are free of charge to attendees,

be hosting an exhibit of contemporary Cuban
artists. “Cuba Libre!: Works from the Shelley
and Donald Rubin Private Collection” will
run through Jun. 21st and features a variety of
artists and mediums. Selected works include,
among others, collaborations between
Ricardo G. Elias and José Angel Toirac (from
the series Peregrinaje); assemblages by
Eduardo Ponjuán; lithographs by Humberto
Castro; and works by Tonel, Adonis Flores,
Tommas Esson, and more. Admission is free;
children 12 and under must be accompanied

From corner to canvas
N
elson Host Santiago spent
years as a street graffiti artist,
spreading his moniker “Host One”
on murals and tags throughout the
city.
He now creates canvas paintings that
incorporate the same elements of graffiti.
“I use spray paints and paint markers for
my canvasses,” said Santiago. “And my
characters have a cartoon-like element, so it
definitely has that graffiti feel.”
Born in Harlem and raised in the Bronx,
Santiago first became interested in art at the
tender age of four, after one of his uncles gave
him a series of comic books. “Even at that age, I was always drawing,
painting, sketching — I was constantly doing
art somehow,” he explained. As a child, he
mostly drew superheroes and villains inspired
by his comics.
Around 12 years of age, Santiago became
enamored with well-known Bronx graffiti
artists of the day, such as Bio and Nicer of
TATS CRU.
“I would see subway trains with their
graffiti work and was amazed,” recalled
Santiago. “Their names were everywhere, on
highway overpasses, too. I would think, how
did they do that?”
What Santiago did know was that he
wanted to do the same thing.
“I was constantly doing art,” says
artist Nelson Host Santiago.
“After that I just ate, slept and drank
graffiti,” he remarked.
Over the next decade, Santiago actively
engaged in Wildstyle pieces — complex
graffiti creations that feature interwoven
letters and shapes.
He then took a lengthy hiatus from graffiti
work to focus on his family, but resurfaced
into the art scene a few years ago, this time
concentrating on canvas pieces. Santiago has also embraced live art
performance as his latest form of creative
expression. He frequently does live painting
events at venues such as El Fogón Center
for the Arts in the Bronx, El Barrio Pinta at
Camaradas in Harlem and DL Lounge on the
Lower East Side.
His work is vibrantly colorful and striking
in composition. The canvases depict issues of
pride, identity and sexuality.
While he still paints superhero-style figures
like the ones he enjoyed in his youth, Santiago
is also greatly inspired by his Puerto Rican
heritage, using his canvasses to touch on

“It’s really bad there now — the crime
and economy, the number of people who are
leaving,” commented Santiago. “I’m trying to
bring some awareness to what’s going on.”
In addition to his artistic engagements,
Santiago revels in encouraging young art
enthusiasts. He has led an art therapy workshop
for young cancer patients at Montefiore
Medical Center, and also conducted free art

New cancer documentary touted at Columbia

story ever told,” filmmaker
Ken Burns said of his new film
Cancer: The Emperor of All
Maladies.
The prolific documentarian was speaking
about his latest project, which details the
history and science of cancer, and is based
on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Dr.
Siddhartha Mukherjee, an oncologist and
Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia
University Medical Center.
The book was adapted by Burns into a sixhour, PBS documentary that will air in three
parts, shown nightly at 9 p.m. from March 30
to April 1.
“Since we declared the war against cancer,
we have needed a report card to show where
we are, and where we are going,” said
Mukherjee. “That’s what we’ve tried to do
with this film.”

Memorial Library on Columbia University,

The Bronx Tourism Council has launched
the first Bronx Visitors Guide. The Bronx 2015 Visitors Guide is a
44-page booklet listing many attractions
the borough has to offer, including parks,
museums, restaurants, and other destinations.
The Guide is also available online on www.
ilovethebronx.com; the digital version is
equipped with finger-swipe technology. All
links are active for easy access to specific
attractions.
The Guide, which was printed in part with
the support of NYC & Company, the City’s
official destination marketing organization,
will be distributed at visitor’s centers, cultural
institutions, and top-tier hotels throughout the
city.
“The Bronx is getting more attention from
tourists than ever,” said Fred Dixon, President
and CEO of NYC & Company in a statement.
“This guide will play a huge role in telling
visitors just how hot the Bronx is, from its
must-see attractions to its cultural richness
and history, and delicious cuisine. We can’t
wait to introduce even more of New York
City’s 56.4 million annual visitors to the
Bronx.”
The launch was held this past Wed., Mar.
18th at Port Morris Distillery, which produces
pitorro, known as Puerto Rican “moonshine,”
and is cited in the Guide as one of the
borough’s attractions.

Statistics show that tourism in the borough is
on the rise.
According to Borough President Rubén Díaz
Jr., the Bronx has experienced a 14 percent
increase in tourism in the past year, which
represents a double-digit uptick.
And the plan is to continue the trend.
“We have wonderful museums, a beach,
golf courses, and City Island,” listed Díaz.
Over the years, tourism in the Bronx has
traditionally focused on three specific sites:
Yankee Stadium, the New York Botanical
Garden or the Bronx Zoo.

Its inaugural event drew over 200 attendees.

ptown foodies have reason
to raise a glass — the
official Washington Heights and
Inwood Restaurant Week, dubbed
#WHIN & DINE, will soon be
back.
At participating restaurants on Mondays
through Fridays between April 6 and April
24, diners can sample the best eats
northern Manhattan has to offer at
discounted prices.
Focusing on eateries between
155th Street and 220th Street,
the event offers three-course prix
fixe dinners for $26.95, excluding
beverages, gratuities and taxes.
“This program is the perfect way to
showcase the culinary treasures that
exist uptown,” said Ariel Ferreira,
Chief Executive Officer and founder
of local marketing firm UpStep,
which organizes #WHIN & DINE.
The restaurant week debuted
three years ago under the moniker
“Explora,” but for its second year the name
was switched to #WHIN & DINE to provide
better branding to the neighborhoods it
served, explained Ferreira.
And the event has continued to grow
since its inception.
“The first year, we had 14 restaurants
participating, and this year we have 26,”
said Ferreira. “We keep adding quite a few
new places.”
This trend is indicative of the wave of
new restaurants and bars that have cropped
up within Inwood and Washington Heights
in recent years.
“This program is the perfect way
to showcase the culinary treasures
that exist uptown,” said Ferreira.
“It’s nice that locals have so many options
for food now,” remarked Ferreira. “Residents
always tell me that they discovered an eatery
through the restaurant week that they didn’t
even know existed before.”

view menus for all restaurants taking part in
the event.
A special kickoff for #WHIN & DINE will
be held on April 6 at Inwood’s Viva Kitchen
and Bar.
Last year’s kickoff, held at District 12, drew
more than 200 attendees, said Ferreira.
“The restaurant week is exciting for people
who live in Washington Heights and Inwood,
but it also attracts people uptown who don’t
normally come here, and they discover how
wonderful this area is,” commented Ferreira.
“It’s great for businesses and great for the
community.”
#WHIN & DINE, the Washington
Heights & Inwood Restaurant Week, will

Perfeccionándose en el Hip-Hop
a historia de la música y cultura del
hip-hop, desde su modesto origen

en el Museo de la ciudad de Nueva York.
Uno de los fotógrafos destacados es nativo del
Bronx, Joe Conzo, Jr., también conocido como
“Joey”.
Nacido y criado en el condado, Conzo adquirió
su pasión por la fotografía mientras asistía a

Red Thread: the Prisoner and the Painter is an operatic short film based on the poetry
of Judith Clark, written during her ongoing internment at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The 30
minute film screening will be accompanied by a live performance by featured artists, vocalist Ann
Casapini, pianist Phyllis Ross, and dancer Cynthia Fuller-Kling, and will include a premiere of three
new songs by Michael Minard, based on Ms. Clark's poetry.
In the film two women, both products of the turbulent 1960's, meet and examine the choices that
put one of them behind bars. Now in their sixties they find commonality in the invisibility they share as
older women on both sides of the prison wall. This is a true story, based on the poetry of radical Judith
Clark, now in her 4th decade of internment.

Innovador programa ofrece entrenamiento IT gratuito
L
os residentes del Bronx tienen una
mayor oportunidad para prepararse en
carreras de información tecnológica (IT),
gracias a la asociación del condado entre
dos firmas industriales de IT.
TEKsystems, un principal proveedor de
servicios de personal y gerencia de IT, se ha
unido a Per Scholas, el programa de desarrollo
de fuerza laboral más grande en la ciudad de
Nueva York, para ofrecer un mejor entrenamiento
tecnológico y servicio de búsqueda de empleo
para comunidades marginadas.
Localmente, TEKsystems está proveyendo
apoyo financiero y otros recursos a Per Scholas
en el Este de la Calle 138 en el Bronx, donde
los estudiantes pueden inscribirse en un curso
gratuito de ocho semanas que los prepara para
obtener la reconocida certificación CompTIA A+ y
comenzar carreras como especialistas de apoyo,
analistas IT y técnicos.
Plinio Ayala, presidente y CEO de Per
Scholas, dijo que actualmente 500 estudiantes

Ayala said that some people who are
interested in an IT career are reluctant to
sign up for training, because they fear that
a college degree is necessary to get ahead
in that field.
“What we’ve found in IT is that a
college degree is not that vital to career
advancement,” explained Ayala. “Having
certifications is more important.”
Upon completion of the main IT course,
students can take advantage of additional
training classes at Per Scholas, and are
given two years of career counseling. Graduates from the local Per Scholas site
have been making their mark, and getting
recognition on a national level, said Ayala.
On February 26, Bronx native Servon
Lewis, 26, gave the opening speech at a
national summit in Washington, D.C.

He was then accepted for a paid internship
program offered at Neuberger Berman, a

Berman today, has received two promotions
since the internship.
“I want to work,” Lewis told the audience
at the D.C. conference. “I want to succeed.
And, you know what? I’m good at what I
do.”

The Age of the Frankenapple?

he Department of Agriculture
recently approved a genetically
engineered apple that won’t brown
when it is dented, bruised or sliced.
The Frankenapple, as it’s
being called, may soon
hit grocery store shelves
alongside Granny Smiths
and Golden Delicious
apples but it won’t have a
label warning consumers
that it has been altered.
We’ll have no idea that the
apple in our shopping cart is
anything but all-natural because current New
York law does not require labeling genetically
modified food products.
The producers of the Frankenapple, and
other genetically modified foods (GMOs) like
it, leave consumers in the dark about what
they eat because they are not mandated to
label what’s in their food products. We don’t
have a choice between buying GMO apples
or non-GMO apples because we have no clue
which is which.
Yet, despite over 90% of Americans
supporting GMO labeling, we have no rules
in place for labeling genetically modified
food products.
Why isn’t this already law? Big food and
beverage companies, like Kraft and CocaCola, are the main opponents to GMO labels
and they are spending millions of dollars to
lobby against labeling bills.
But our elected officials in Albany,
including Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie,
now have the opportunity to stand up for
consumers’ rights and
support bill A.617 to
mandate GMO labeling.
While the corporations
claim that labeling is too expensive,
the truth is that no negligible impact
on costs has been found. In countries
where labeling is mandatory,
including
the
European
Union, there has been no
noticeable impact on costs or
food prices.
Food labeling is a crucial part of how we
decide what to eat. From labels disclosing the
amount of sugar to whether or not the product
is made from concentrate, our decisions rely
on the availability of this information and we
expect to have it.
GMO labeling should be no different.
The impact of GMOs on the human body is
also of concern to consumers. Since their risks
aren’t well-documented, without labeling we
are unable to measure their long term health
effects. The FDA has weak oversight and
management of GMO products, and since
GMO producers are not required to run safety
tests of new GMO food products, they often
do not.
Bronx families have some of the city’s
highest obesity rates and lack access to
nutritious food. They should not be deceived
by food products that may pose health risks.
Without labels, the Frankenapple we buy and
eat may end up being a monster to our wellbeing.
Instead of leaving consumers in the dark
about what is on their dinner plates and caving
in to corporate interests, policy makers should
support GMO labeling to bring clarity to what
is in the food we eat.
We hope Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie
will support bill A.617 and bring it to the floor
for a vote.
Now is the right time to move this important
legislation forward.

Today, nearly all are enrolled in school, and
just about one in three had repeated a grade,
reported Humensky.
And despite the high-risk population served
by LIP, there have been no
completed suicides among
program participants to date,
observed Humensky.
Moreover,
suicidal
ideation decreases over the
duration of the program
enrollment.
“It is very hard to show
change in mental behavior,”
explained Humensky. “We are very excited at
the findings.”
Through the LIP program, girls learn how
to cope with depression and to externalize
their feelings, in a nurturing, non-judgmental
environment. Once they turn 18, the girls are
encouraged to lead by example and become
peer mentors in the program.
“I thought I was going to lose my girl,” said
Janette O., whose daughter started cutting
herself at 12. “But because of LIP, I have my
daughter.”
Because LIP works in collaboration with
area schools, Janet was able to find out about
the program – and get her daughter the muchneeded help – through a school flyer.
Today, her once-vulnerable child is a senior
in high school and an inspiration to her mother.
“I have a lot to be thankful [for],” said
Janette.
“We are very excited at the findings,” said Jennifer
L. Humensky, Assistant Professor of Clinical Health
Policy and Management at Columbia University.

It is a success story that organizers want to
see replicated.
“Intervention is prevention,” stressed LIP
Program Coordinator Beatriz Coronel.
“This is a problem that continues to grow,”
said Klein. In 2014, he provided $300,000 in
state funding to expand the program in the
Bronx and increase the number of at-risk teens
receiving services.
Though reasons as to why suicidal behaviors
among New York City adolescents are more
predominant in Latina girls are not conclusive,
Dr. Gil suggested that there are specific cultural
obstacles faced by Latina teenagers, who often
hail from immigrant families. Young women
often struggle to reconcile the more typically
traditional expectations of the family’s native
country with a more independent lifestyle.
“Latinas want to imitate the American girls,”
said Dr. Gil.

communication between parents and their
children, no matter how delicate or difficult the
subject.
“Mental health is still taboo, and that is a
problem,” said Klein.

Comportamiento Juvenil de Alto Riesgo (YHRBS
por sus siglas en inglés), la cual reveló que, a
nivel nacional, el 26% de las adolescentes latinas
han contemplado el suicidio, un aumento del 5%
en comparación con 2011 y más del doble de la
tasa de sus homólogas no hispanas.
Las adolescentes latinas representan casi uno
de cada seis intentos de suicidio en los Estados
Unidos.
Especialistas de la Universidad Columbia han
evaluado el programa LIP durante los últimos 2
años para medir su impacto en las participantes a

primera Guía para Visitantes del Bronx.
La Guía para Visitantes del Bronx 2015
es un folleto de 44 páginas que lista muchas
atracciones que el condado tiene para ofrecer,
incluyendo parques, museos, restaurantes y otros
destinos. La guía también está disponible en
línea en www.ilovethebronx.com; la versión digital
dispone de una tecnología de deslizamiento

Santiago, who never had any art classes
or formal training himself, is quick to tell his
students to be themselves and follow their
own creative muse. “I always say to them, ‘Don’t let anyone tell
you how to express yourself,’” said Santiago.
“I’m not against art education, but I think
sometimes it restricts the way you create.”
Santiago said that for a budding artist,
finding your own style is part of the process. “Remember, there are no mistakes in art,”
he remarked. “If you want to paint a moon
that’s pink, or a person that’s blue, go right
ahead. You should express yourself the way
you want.”

detectives jamás contada”, dijo
el cineasta Ken Burns sobre su nueva
película Cancer: The Emperor of All
Maladies.
El prolífico documentalista habló de su último
proyecto, el cual detalla la historia y la ciencia del
cáncer, y se basa en el libro ganador del Premio
Pulitzer del Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, oncólogo y
profesor asistente de medicina del Centro Médico
de la Universidad Columbia.
El libro fue adaptado por Burns en un
documental de PBS de seis horas, que saldrá al
aire en tres partes y se mostrará cada noche a las
9 pm del 30 de marzo al 1 de abril.
“Desde que declaramos la guerra contra el
cáncer hemos necesitado una tarjeta de informes
para mostrar dónde estamos y hacia dónde

pregunta por muchas razones.
Para comenzar, muchas mujeres
cometen el error de pensar
que están inmunes a la presión
sanguínea alta, sencillamente
por su género. Sin embargo, las
estadísticas muestran que entre
las edades de 45 a 64, el por
ciento de hombres y mujeres
con hipertensión es similar.
Luego de los 64, un porcentaje
mucho mayor de mujeres tienen
la presión sanguínea más alta
que los hombres. En general,
la mitad de los individuos que
sufren de alta presión sanguínea
son mujeres. No estamos en
menos peligro que nuestros
homólogos masculinos.
Además, debido a que la
hipertensión no siempre es
asociada con síntomas visibles,
puede pasar sin ser detectada
tanto en el hombre como en la
mujer por un periodo de tiempo
peligroso. Muchas personas
creen que si tienen presión
sanguínea alta, se refleja en
un sinnúmero de síntomas
incluyendo: fuertes dolores de
cabeza, dolor en el pecho,
falta de respiración/o mareos.

síntomas pasan a ser aparentes
