St. Mary’s Parish
Annapolis, Maryland
Dear Parishioners,
St. Augustine was born in North Africa in A.D. 354 and is well known for his philosophical and theological teachings and his stalwart defense of the Catholic faith in the
face of numerous heresies. We celebrate the feast day of this famous Doctor of the
Church on August 28. Here at St. Mary’s we have a large lithograph of St. Augustine in
the Rectory hallway. Why, you might ask, is it there?
Because of St. Augustine’s African origins, many predominantly African American
Catholic congregations in the United States adopted him as their patron. The same thing
occurred right here in Annapolis. In the 19th century, about one-third of St. Mary’s parishioners were African Americans; some free, others enslaved. In 1864 Maryland’s
slaves were freed and the number of black Catholics in Annapolis increased. Although
both black and white parishioners attended St. Mary’s Church, St. Mary’s operated separate black and white
elementary schools. St. Mary’s Catholic Colored School was tuition-free and open to black children of all
faiths. By the 1890s, the school had two special financial supporters: St. Katharine Drexel and her sister,
Louise Morrell of Philadelphia. With this help, the school continued to flourish under the direction of the
School Sisters of Notre Dame.
But African American Catholics in Annapolis yearned for their own
Church. During the 1930s they established a self-help society named
for their benefactors. It was known as the Drexmore Club. The members began to raise money for their own church and, in the waning days
of World War II, Archbishop Curley granted their wish. St. Augustine’s
mission church, under the direction of the Redemptorists, became a reality. A combination church and school were constructed on Bates
Street, in the Clay Street neighborhood. Construction began in 1945
and was completed in 1949.
The upper-level church accommodated 450 persons. It included a
life-size statue of St. Augustine outside, above its center door, and inside, on either side of the main altar, there was an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the lithograph of St.
Augustine that now hangs at St. Mary’s. Father James Rice was the first priest in charge. Two vocations
emerged from St. Augustine’s: Ruth Jennings became an Oblate Sister of Providence and James Vaughn became a Christian Brother. The school, on the lower level, also opened in 1949 with 54 students taught by the
SSNDs from St. Mary’s.
St. Mary’s schools were integrated in 1957 and St. Augustine’s school was closed. The mission church rolls
saw a decline around this time and by 1964 St. Augustine’s had become more of a “chapel of convenience”
rather than a full-fledged mission. A major snowstorm in January 1966 brought the end to St. Augustine’s. Serious structural damage caused by the storm led to its closure. The school was used as a temporary community
center in 1968 but the building was condemned in 1971 and torn down in 1972. The land was sold and lowincome housing was built. It was named Augustine Court in memory of the church and school.
So as we celebrate the feast of St. Augustine this week, pray for St. Mary’s. As you pass his picture in the
hallway, remember the rich history it represents and the many lives it has touched.
God Bless Us all
Fr. Tizio

"Mary, the Faithful Disciple," by
Bertrand Buby, S.M. traces the New
Testament portrait of Mary as a
model for Christian discipleship and
faithfulness. The author combines a
clear explanation of the biblical
images of Mary and a program of
spirituality that any Christian can
discover and apply. The progress of
Mary's journey of faith enables us to
comprehend our own pilgrimage to
follow the Lord through ups and
downs of life. Available in the Marian
section of St. Mary's Church Library.
Ranger Rosary
“We hand out anywhere to 150250 rosaries a month. They go like
hot cakes, to a starving Catholic faith
based community to help them
continue their faith journey. They
enjoy getting the rosaries and
literature. It helps comfort them with
the separation from family and
friends and when they go into foreign
areas. They are comforted knowing
God is with them." Catholic Coordinator,

DID YOU KNOWB
In the summer of 1775 the
Continental Congress
approved Commander-inChief George Washington’s
request for nurses (one for
every ten patients in Continental
Hospitals)? In 1898 The Spanish
American War increased the number
of nurses needed to more than 1500,
which included 250 nuns, 80 African
American’s, and at least four Native
American’s. Not until 1901, 126
years after the initial recognition
of the need for nurses in the
military , was the Army Nurse Corps
established by Congress (followed 7
years later, by the Navy Nurse Corps
(1908).

Planned Parenthood has been
exposed! Not only are babies being
dismembered in the sanctuary of
their mother’s womb, but their organs
are being harvested and sold!
Partial birth abortions are being done
to obtain “intact” organs. Now more
than ever it is most urgent for all of
us to join in the peaceful prayer vigil
at Planned Parenthood. Help save
God’s innocent children from this
barbaric and evil practice. Stand up!

News to Share
As we start a new school year, I am pleased to share with you the news of
someone who has indeed answered the call. Effective August 24, I have appointed Mr. Fred Haller to be the president of St. Mary’s School. He will report
directly to me and work closely with the school principals, Mrs. Rebecca Zimmerman and Mrs. Mindi Imes, to bring a renewed focus on strategic planning,
curriculum and technology enhancements, and our vision for a connected, vibrant school. His work will directly support the preparation of our students to
become the next generation of Catholic leaders. Mr. Haller has been a member
of our school board, most recently serving as its chair. That service has given
him an in-depth understanding of the needs and goals of St. Mary’s School. He

SUMMER FOOD DRIVE
The St. Vincent de Paul Society
is conducting a food drive to help
stock the food pantries of the
Lighthouse, for distribution to the
needy in our community. Graul’s
Market has again graciously
donated grocery bags, which
volunteers will hand out at all Masses at St. Mary’s this
weekend. A list of Light House-suggested items is
attached to each bag. You may use the bag, or any
other bags or boxes, to bring your food donations to St.
Mary’s Church Masses next weekend. Signs will direct
you to drop points in the parking lots for your
donations. If you would like to donate, but will not be
able to come to St. Mary’s during Mass times on
August 29 or 30, or if you have questions about the
food drive, please contact
Elaine Larison at

Por nuestra hermana difunta
Blanca Rosa Hernandez
St. Mary’s Parish
Annapolis, Maryland
Queridos Parroquianos,
Padre Tizio

Antes de "Ser Catequista" soy Persona:
Tengo sentimientos, problemas, necesidades económicas, sociales, escolares,
"Ustedes no me eligieron a mí;
he sido Yo quien los eligió
a ustedes" (Jn 15, 16).
