James Barren, Ph.D., met

Southwest Detroit at Las

Thursday, December 11.
Chief Barren, appointed
on September 19, 2008 by
the Honorable Mayor
Kenneth V. Cockrel, Jr.,
is the 38th person to lead
the DPD in its 143 year
history. Along with having over 30 years of experience as one of Detroit’s
finest, Chief Barren has
earned three Master
degrees in Education
Psychology, Criminal
Justice, and Counseling
at Wayne State
University in addition to
a Doctorate in Counseling
with a cognate in psychology.
Nearly 40 people
attended the meetingincluding neighborhood
residents, community
leaders, and
business/property owners.
Chief Barren fielded
questions and engaged in
conversion on a variety of
topics, ranging from putting more Latino police
officers on the streets to
improving police response
time to aggressively combating prostitution and
drug dealing to implementing safety features to
protect personal property
to improving the overall
quality of life in
Southwest Detroit. Chief

architectural assistance, and their goal is to complete the renovation
of their storefronts by the spring of 2009.

(SDBA) Façade
Improvement Program is
to assist building owners
and or their tenants to
make visible improvements to their properties
and buildings, which contribute to the overall
enhancement of the West
Vernor Business District.
It helps business and
property owners improve
their storefronts by providing grants for architectural services and reimbursement for up to 50%
of the total project cost up

leadership and department heads

City of Detroit and its constituents.

my patients

manageable, but if someone waits 6 months or

can be ten times as much
as if repaired early.
Now, if the person lets
the decay progress further
and the tooth breaks down
so much with decay that it
has to be removed, that
creates a new problem. A
bridge may be needed to
maintain the missing tooth
space and support the bite
so it doesn’t collapse. This

Property Tax Bill
If property values fall,
so can property tax bills,
but sometimes not before
you initiate the tedious
process to prove your
home’s assessed value
warrants a tax reduction.
Pay close attention to
your next property tax
bill. Your home may be
worth less than the local
tax assessor believes and
that can mean a smaller
property tax bill. Any
property owner in Detroit
who believes that their
property is assessed too
high a value has until
Friday, February 15 to
appeal their assessment.
The process for doing this
begins by filing an appeal
with the Assessment
Division of the City of
Detroit Finance
Department.
Although the
Assessment Division
entertains the numerous
appeals, they almost
always deny your initial
request for a reduction.
However, once they deny
your appeal, a property
owner has the option to
take it to the Board of
Review where your odds
are much better. An
attorney should be consulted to assist in the
preparation and handling
of the appeal to ensure a
favorable outcome.
