She has two siblings, Lynda and Leslie. Lopez spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at the all-girls Preston High School in the Bronx. She financed singing and dancing lessons for herself from the age of 19. After attending Baruch College for one semester, Lopez divided her time between working as a notary public in a legal office, dance classes, and dance performances in Manhattan night clubs. She had a small part in the 1987 film “My Little Girl at the age of sixteen.” After months of auditioning for dance roles, Lopez was selected as a dancer for various rap music videos, a 1990 episode of Yo! MTV Raps and became a backup dancer for the New Kids on the Block and their performance of their song "Games" for the American Music Awards in 1991. She gained her first regular high-profile job as a “Fly Girl” dancer on the television comedy program “In living Color” from 1991-1993. The Near West Intergenerational School will open with 80 students K-2. It will be located in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Excellent-rated Garrett Morgan School of Science (a high school) building at 4016 Woodbine Avenue. In subsequent years, additional grades will be added, until the school reaches its full complement of K-8 education. Recruitment and enrollment for the inaugural group of 2011-2012 school year students has just begun. It received “Excellent” ratings from the Ohio Department of Education for six years, and was highlighted as one of only seven charters in the nation by the US Department of Education for innovation and closing the achievement gap 24 | LATINOS | JUNIo-julio from the Latino community and community advocates on the near west side began talking eighteen months ago. “The process has been challenging at times, but the act of trying to create a community school has actually strengthened bonds between neighbors, parents and businesses. Everyone wants a school that will provide a great education and keep families in the neighborhood,” said Norma Polanco-Boyd, founding member and mom of two. The group researched various educational models and met with a cross-section of public school officials and private school representatives. And while everyone they met with was extremely helpful, it wasn’t until they met Dr. Cathy Whitehouse, founder of The Intergenerational School (TIS) on Cleveland’s East side, that they found the model they wanted to bring to this community. Cathy and her husband, Dr. Peter Whitehouse, founded The Intergenerational School just a little decade ago as a public, nonprofit charter school. Cathy, with an academic background in child development, was interested in how kids learn, and how schools succeed. Peter, as a physician working with the elderly, was interested in how seniors stay active and engaged. Both were interested in the idea of an “intergenerational learning environment,” where young children and older adults could learn from each other. Hence, The Intergenerational School was born. After 10 years, The Intergenerational School’s unique model has proven to be an enormous success. It received “Excellent” ratings from the Ohio Department of Education for six years, and was highlighted as one of only seven charters in the nation by the US Department of Education for innovation and closing the achievement gap, among numerous other local, national, and even international, recognitions. The west side parents were impressed with the school’s approach, record of accomplishments, and integration with various community organizations (as part of the mission). Subsequently, they have worked with the east-side school to replicate what they were doing on the near west side of town. As a public charter school, it’s free of charge, and enrolls students on a first-come, first-served basis. The curriculum is based on Ohio’s content standards, but uses a developmental approach, where children progress at their own pace based on mastery. What results is an individualized education where students build a solid academic foundation as part of a learning community where respect and civility are paramount. Students work with mentors (mostly senior citizens) and ‘adopt’ residents at local long-term care facilities, and participate in other learning activities with community members of all ages. In Ohio City, the diversity of the population and vibrant community will be leveraged to create a rich experience to include themes such as Latino culture and environmental sustainability. La banda debutó con el álbum “Just Another Band from East L.A.” hace unos 30 años.
