(310) 326-3364 smmlomita.org CATHOLIC CHURCH 25511 Eshelman Avenue, Lomita 2 Ytà{xÜ ctâÄËá VÉÜÇxÜ Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary’s, On this Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit has inspired me to offer our parishioners a revised version of the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt love the Lord your God with you whole mind, heart and soul. (Enter the sacred space of the Church recollected and ready to worship God with your whole being. Arrive at Mass early, with plenty of time to pray beforehand.) Thou shalt not use the Name of the Lord thy God in vain. (Contrary to common usage, a Church is not a Chat Room. Jesus is present in the Tabernacle, waiting to chat with you! Others are silently trying to pray to Him. You can always catch up with your friends outside afterwards). Thou shalt keep Holy the Lord’s Day. (Mass is an obligation, not because God needs our presence but because we need His—His strength, peace, patience and joy. If purposefully miss Mass (without the valid excuses of illness or travel), Confession is necessary before receiving Communion again). Thou shalt honor your Father and Mother. (Your parents raised you in the faith, bringing you to Mass every Sunday, because they wanted to give you the very best in Life—more than mere food, clothing and shelter. They wanted you know the sure path to Eternal Life). Thou shalt not kill. Don’t come to Mass merely to kill time. Humbly ask Jesus for what you really need—the grace to kill sinful habits. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Adultery means abandoning your true love and paying more attention to another. Some people seem to love their smart phones more than God, going so far as to text in Church! Turn your cell phones off or leave them elsewhere!) Thou shalt not steal. (We can never come before God empty-handed, without offering something of our very selves—our time, treasure, and talents—otherwise it’s like robbing God of His due). Thou shalt not lie. When the priest holds the Sacred Host before you, saying “The Body of Christ!” you respond “Amen!” —which means “Yes. Lord, I believe it is you! So be it!” Don’t ever let your reception of Holy Communion be half-hearted or a lie. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s person or possessions. Dress appropriately and modestly. Also, how many times we witness people staring vacantly at their neighbor during Mass, literally chewing gum like cows chewing their cuds. God’s Holy Spirit desires to possess your person! Thou shalt not leave Mass before the Final Blessing. A nearby parish has a sign at every exit reading: “Judas was the first to leave Mass early!” The All-powerful God can certainly help you exit the parking lot! Leaving Mass immediately after communion is not only rude but it means you neglect giving thanks for God’s greatest gift, the Holy Eucharist! Moreover, you don’t receive the Priest’s blessing for the week ahead. With prayers and friendship in the Lord, Fr. Paul PASTOR: Fr. Paul O’Donnell ASSOCIATE PASTORS: Fr. Juan Silva and Fr. John Palmer PRIEST IN RESIDENCE: Fr. 6.-No cometerás actos impuros. Con oraciones y la amistad en el Señor, Padre Paul UPDATE 4 O U R F A I T H I N A C T I O N TOGETHER IN MISSION Together in Mission is a wonderful way for each of us and our Parish Community to reach out to our Catholic family throughout the Los Angeles Archdiocese who need our help and share the many blessings that we have been given at St. Margaret Mary’s. Our Parish goal for Together in Mission this year is $130,200. As of May 15th, 391 families in our community have pledged $102,029. Just $28,171 more is needed to meet this year’s goal. All money that is paid that exceeds our goal is returned to the parish and we put it into our Christian Service Program so, all donations to this program go directly to those who have a real need. If you have not made a pledge yet, please prayerfully consider doing so. Envelopes are available in the pews or in the parish office. If you prefer to make a one-time donation, simply make a check (checks only, please) payable to “Together in Mission” and put it in the collection basket. Thank you, Deacon Dan ST. We must also spread the Gospel of Life by fervently supporting those who protect and respect all stages of life! Thank you for supporting the Pro-Life Group by your prayers and generosity at our fundraising events. MEN’S CORNERSTONE RETREAT Registration information is available in the patio after all Morning Masses. 5 g{x ftvÜtÅxÇà Éy TÇÉ|Çà|Çz Éy à{x f|v~ Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. James 5:14-15. Why should I be anointed? The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick continues the healing ministry of Jesus by helping those who are in need of spiritual, emotional or physical healing experience the presence of Christ. The sacrament grants the grace of comfort, peace and courage, to face sickness and resist being tempted by discouragement and despair. Is there a difference between being healed and being cured? Yes. A healing takes place on the spiritual level. A healing might include the strength to face what lies ahead and the grace to accept God’s will for our lives. A cure speaks of the physical aspects, and sometimes, through this sacrament, people are not only healed, they also are cured. Who should be anointed? Anyone who: •Has a serious or chronic illness. ●Is facing surgery. ●Suffering the debilitating effects of old age. When should anointing take place? ●As soon as one is seriously ill. ●If surgery is elective or planned, before being admitted for surgery. ●Before the sick person is unconscious, comatose or in the last stages of death. ●Whenever a new condition or surgery arises or the current condition significantly worsens. What takes place during the anointing? The priest lays hands on the one who is ill and prays over him or her. The priest will also anoint the sick person with oil, the ancient symbol for strength and healing. How can I arrange to be anointed? Anointing is available each weekday morning immediately following the 6:30 and 8:15 AM Mass. Arrange this by speaking with the priest before Mass.
