May 8, 2016 - Holy Name of Mary
May 8, 2016
7th Sunday of Easter—Mother’s Day
Hail Elizabeth full of grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit
of your womb, Richard and Bruce. No, I didn't get it
wrong it is a prayer in which the name of all mothers
can be interjected. As I have grown older and our
world moves faster I have experienced the title of
mother or any other title must be earned. It is what
you do and how you do it, what you say and how you
chose to say it that counts. Years ago someone told
me when you forget where you came from then all
your problems start. I now know and believe (even
though it took me a long time) I am not defined first
of all by anyone or thing on earth. I am one of God's
children, beloved Son in whom he is well pleased. My
identity and origin comes from him. Then just as he
did for his Son he blessed Jesus with Mary and
Joseph. I was blessed with Alex and Elizabeth. They
were married and said yes to each other for life. For
my Dad the weakness of his humanity was stronger
than the bond of his yes and they divorced when I
was in third grade and my brother was in first. It was
then that I became more aware of the messiness of
life. I know I was born in love, of love to be able to
share love. My second identity was not that I came
from a divorced family but that I was given life here
on earth by two people who loved each other so
much I am here. As we celebrate Mother’s Day I just
want to let you know those of you who are mothers, I
see your efforts and honor your struggles those that
have never been dealt with in previous generations.
What is more important is that God sees and knows
and gives you new life each day to keep on
growing and giving meaning to your life as a
woman and mother. Before Mary was
crowned Queen of Heaven she tasted the dust
of the earth. Her life began in messiness here
on earth. I would like to give you the gift of
not only remembering but believing these
three things.
• Receive the gift of knowing who you are.
• Receive the gift of knowing your yes will be more than
you can ever imagine.
• Receive the gift of giving meaning to your life by the
choices you make not by what is forced on you by
the winds of change.
In May of 1988, my Dad called to say 'your mother
died.' There was emotion in his voice as he shared that
reality. All parents damage their children but more
importantly they also love them into being. The love of
one for another can never be erased. It has molded us into
who we are today. I am who I am today because od those
who have loved me and failed to love me.
My dear mothers, thank you for the efforts you make day
after day in the messiness of this life to become more of who
your children need to be. I
invite you to pray the first
part of the Hail Mary and
put your name in and then
believe what you pray and
live out of it. You are an
inspiration to me and give
me life.
With my continued love
and support,
Fr. Rich SS.CC.
• Mary's yes was stretched and turned into a life
she could never imagine.
• Mary knew and lived out of the belief that she
was full of grace and blessed.
• Mary pondered in her heart each day the
meaning how she could become more of
the mother her Son needed as he grew in
wisdom, age and holiness as the world
changed for her and her family.

7th Sunday of Easter—Mother’s Day
Mi segunda identidad no
Usted
es una inspiración para
mí y me da vida.
Con mi continuo amor
y apoyo,
Fr. Rich, SS.CC.
familia.

182 Confermandis are sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank you to all the Catechists and
Volunteers who helped prepare our teens and help to set the example of following Christ. We encourage
our newly Confirmed to grow in faith, and share the gifts they have been given.
“Remember, then, that you received a spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear. Keep
safe what you received. God the Father sealed you, Christ the Lord strengthened you
and sent the Spirit into your hearts as the pledge of what is to come.”

Did You Know?!
Know the signs of human trafficking
Human trafficking claims many young victims every year, and often, we see these victims in our
daily lives. It is important to recognize the signs of abuse and to know how to interact with
possible victims. The best way to start a tough conversation with teens who may be at risk is simply to talk to them—ask what’s going on in their lives, and if they are okay. Signs of abuse
include suspicious or inexplicable injuries, avoidance, or reliance on an older “friend.”

6th Sunday
of Easter

From the Director of Administration…
On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, most Catholics in the
United States also celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Traditionally, Ascension Thursday occurred 40 days after Easter (May 5 this year); however,
most dioceses in the U.S. have transferred this Holy Day
of Obligation to the Sunday following it, which this year is
today.
Corinne Pantaleo packs the gift bags from
Barbara's Blankets
containing goodies and blankets made by our Barbara's
Blankets Ministry, to be delivered to our partners in the
ISP Women's Retreat (an organization that serves those
in various stages of recovery from alcohol and substance
dependency).
Volunteers Needed for
La Verne & San Dimas
Meals on Wheels
We provide noon meals for the areas of La Verne and
San Dimas. Our drivers along with a navigator deliver
up to 50 meals a day Monday thru Friday.
Christ’s Ascension is important to us. It is one of our core
beliefs, to the extent that when we profess our faith at
Mass, regardless which Creed we use, we declare, “He
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of
the Father.” To deny Christ’s Ascension is to deny His
Resurrection. Before His Ascension, which is described in
our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus
tells His followers, “…you will be baptized with the Holy
Spirit.”
We, too, have been baptized and imbued with the Holy
Spirit. This Third Member of the Holy Trinity is the aspect
of God that lives and empowers each of us. We may think
that the Holy Spirit has more work to do among those
who do not believe, but there is also considerable work to
be done among those of us who do believe. We are
called to serve; we are called to discipleship; we are
called to lives of stewardship; we are reminded of that in
all of today’s readings.
In his homily on the Ascension of Christ last year, Pope
Francis said, “The Ascension tells us He is with God the
Father, where He always intercedes in our favor.”
If you wish to volunteer, please call
(909) 596-1828 and leave a phone
number. We will return your call and
