The 2nd Annual Walk in the Jungle
will take place on April 28, 2012. That’s
just 6 weeks away! This is one of our
biggest fund-raisers of the year and we
need your support and participation to
reach this year’s goal of $75,000! This is
a great event for the whole family that
will not only help create more
awareness of bleeding disorders to the
community, but will raise money for
programs and services for FHA. On February 18, we created some
WALK excitement by having the walk kick-off “happy hour” at the
Martini Bar at Gulfstream Park. Over 60 people attended to show
support to FHA and to learn how they could participate in the 2012
walk. Don’t fret if you’ve missed the meeting. We will walk you
through the process!

La Segunda Caminata Inaugural de Hemofilia del 2012, se
realizará el 28 de Abril del 2012. Necesitamos que todos acudan
y participen en la caminata. Este es un gran evento para toda la
familia, no solamente ayudará a crear más conciencia de los
trastornos hemorrágicos en la comunidad, sino que recaudará
fondos para los programas y servicios de la FHA.
El 18 de Febrero creamos cierto entusiasmo por la
Caminata, con una “happy hour” en el Martini Bar en
Gulfstream Park. Más de sesenta personas asistieron a la
reunión para mostrar su apoyo a la FHA y para enterarse de
cómo pueden participar en la caminata del 2012. No se
preocupe si no pudo asistir a la reunión. ¡Le ayudaremos a

15th Annual Holiday Duo
O
n Sunday, December 11th, the Florida Hemophilia
Association hosted its 15th Annual Holiday Duo Family
Picnic at CB Smith Park. We had a
great turnout! The families enjoyed a
marvelous barbecue lunch catered by
Picnic King. The children enjoyed
snow cones and cotton candy as well
as a hula hoop contest. It was great to
have DJ Tony back spinning his tunes
this year.
Making a return appearance again
this year, was the Hialeah Firefighters
Benevolent Association, (HFBA) and Santa Claus. Hats off to
HFBA for the festive holiday decorations and pictures with
Santa for each of our children and for arranging for Santa and
his firefighter elves to come out and spread some holiday cheer
to our families and kids.
We had some fabulous raffle prizes and each child went
home with a gift from Santa. Thank you to all of our sponsors
for making this event possible. Also, a round of applause to all
of the volunteers who helped with getting raffle prizes, and set
up the day of the event. You’re the best!
We look forward to seeing all of you next year at the
Holiday Duo Family Picnic.

FDA Approves HIV Vaccine
for Human Trial
A
n HIV vaccine developed by researchers from the University
of Western Ontario (UWO) was recently approved by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical trials in
humans.
A team led by Chil-Yong Kang, PhD, a researcher and
professor at UWO’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry,
created the unique vaccine, known as SAV001, by using a killed
whole HIV-1 similar to the killed whole virus vaccines for
hepatitis A and influenza. The virus is genetically engineered so
that it does not cause disease and can be generated in large
volumes. SAV001 is being developed with the support of
Sumagen Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Sumagen Co., Ltd., a
Korea-based pharmaceutical company specializing in HIV
vaccines.
The SAV001 vaccine still needs to pass through the following
three phases of human clinical trials before it becomes
commercially available:
Phase I, which begins this month, double checks the safety
of the vaccine in 40 HIV-positive volunteers.
Phase II will measure immune responses in approximately
600 HIV-negative volunteers who are in the high-risk category
for HIV infection.
Phase III will measure the efficacy of the vaccine in
approximately 6,000 HIV-negative volunteers in the high-risk
category for HIV infection.
“FDA approval for human clinical trials is an extremely
significant milestone for our vaccine, which has the potential to
save the lives of millions of people around the world by
preventing HIV infection,” said Kang.

VIH para ensayos en seres humanos
L
a Administración de Fármacos y Alimentos (FDA) de los EE.
UU. aprobó recientemente una vacuna contra el VIH
desarrollada por investigadores de The University of Western Ontario
(UWO; Universidad de Ontario Occidental) para ensayos
clínicos en seres humanos.
Un equipo liderado por Chil-Yong Kang, PhD, investigador y
profesor de la Facultad de Medicina y Odontología Schulich de
la UWO, creó esta excepcional vacuna, conocida como SAV001,
utilizando VIH-1 entero inactivado similar a las vacunas con
virus entero inactivado para la hepatitis A y la gripe. El virus es
genomanipulado de forma tal que no causa la enfermedad y
puede producirse en grandes cantidades. El SAV001 se desarrolla

Investigators Publish Two Studies
Using UDC Data
A
pair of studies in the December 2011 edition of the
American Journal of Preventive Medicine highlighted some
notable findings from data collected by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC).
In the first study, “Insurance, Home Therapy, and
Prophylaxis in U.S. Youth with Severe Hemophilia,” the authors
reviewed data from the CDC’s Universal Data Collection (UDC)
project, a voluntary surveillance system that relies on patient
enrollment.
The lead author of the study was Judith R. Baker, MHSA
Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, University of
California Los Angeles.
Included in the study was a nationwide cohort of 3,380 boys
and young men with severe hemophilia A or B, ages 2-20 years
old, all of whom had received care at a federally funded
hemophilia treatment center (HTC) between January 1, 2008,
and December 31, 2010.
The results showed that 90% of patients used home therapy
and 78% were on a prophylaxis treatment regimen. Only 2%
were uninsured. Investigators found that those with health
insurance were much more likely to be on prophylaxis (77%) vs.
those who were uninsured (21%). The data also showed
significant correlations between race, age, inhibitor status, and
HTC use, home therapy use and prophylaxis.
“Youth with severe hemophilia who annually obtain care
within the U.S. HTC network had a high level of health
insurance, home therapy, and prophylaxis. Exploration of
factors associated with insurance coverage and yearly HTC
utilization, and interventions to optimize home infusion and
prophylaxis among youth of African-American and ‘other’
race/ethnic backgrounds are warranted,” concluded Baker and
her colleagues.
Investigators also drew on UDC data for the second study,
“Physical Functioning in Boys with Hemophilia in the U.S.”
The lead author was Paul E. Monahan, MD, Department of
Pediatrics, Hematology/Oncology, University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Researchers reviewed 15 potential predictors of poor physical
functioning in boys with hemophilia A and B (up to 18 years of age)
who had received care at an HTC between 1998 and 2008.
They found that several characteristics were associated with
limitations of joint function, including increasing age, presence
of joint bleeding and inhibitors. African-Americans were also
independently associated with activity restrictions. In addition,
obesity and medical coverage with Medicaid, as opposed to
private health insurance, were independently associated with
multiple poor outcomes.
“Interventions focused on eliminating inhibitors, improving
outcomes for African-American children with hemophilia, and
maintaining healthy body weight are warranted. In addition,
strategies are needed to assure adequate insurance coverage for
all people with hemophilia to eliminate economic barriers to
optimal functional outcomes,” the authors concluded.

n par de estudios en la edición de diciembre de 2011

hallazgos notables de los datos recolectados por los Centros

los autores analizaron datos del
proyecto de Recolección Universal de Datos (UDC, por su sigla
