“Fluye”. W hen it came to choosing between going into the beauty business or being a veterinarian, Denise Lenore chose the former. She has an artist’s eye, especially when working with hair. This is the Bucktown native’s first experience with Latino Fashion Week and she is looking forward to the weeklong event. “I’m excited to work with all the designers and I love the whole fashion industry,” she said. To prepare for all the fashion shows, Lenore says that she looks at the designers’ work and develops a concept in her mind, although nothing is set until the day of the runway show. “I like to see the model and what they’re wearing and then come up with the inspiration,” she said. W hile Hernán Rivera worked behind the cosmetic counters at Marshall Fields, he dreamed of opening his own business. Rivera took up the challenge and started Sin Cosmetics more than two years ago. His cosmetic line offers quality makeup at reasonable prices. “It started because we wanted a line that focused just on the Latina woman,” he said. “Like Latino Fashion Week, they’re made by Latinos and made for everybody.” Now as the director of makeup for the fourth annual Latino Fashion Week, Rivera is excited to acknowledge the fact that Sin Cosmetics is the official makeup presenter for the second consecutive year, sharing the stage with Estée Lauder. “It’s a big accomplishment for us to actually work with such a big line and name,” he said. A New Orleans native, Julius LaCour’s calling has always been design. He started making his own clothes at 13. “It was then that it hit me and I realized that this is what I wanted to do,” LaCour said. He attended the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago to study design. This is his first year participating in Latino Fashion Week, something he always hoped to do. The inspiration for his award-winning collection comes from Voodoo. “I like to take a lot of inspiration from minority subcultures and from things that people don’t like to talk about, like taboo things.” When it comes to his clothes, LaCour thinks outside the box, creating dramatic dynamics, a touch he feels Chicagoans need. “I want to leave my stamp on Chicago,” he said. L aura Silva is a veteran of Latino Fashion Week. This is the fourth year she’s participating. Her introduction to modeling came when she met a photographer through her boyfriend. She soon graced the covers of two Chicago magazines and eventually met the Latino Fashion Week organizers, though her love for the spotlight began much earlier. “I always stole my mom’s shoes when I was a kid,” she said. “I was pretty good at doing my makeup at the age of 5.” During the last casting call for Latino Fashion Week, Silva was signed by Factor Women model agency. As an adolescent and teen, Silva partook in onstage productions, claiming that acting is her next goal in life. “Anything where I’m in front of an audience, I love it,” said the aspiring Renaissance woman.
