A Message from Father Roberto
Parish theme for this year: Be Disciples. Make Disciples.
Our Best or Our Leftovers?
Like the lovely church in Oaxaca, Mexico that I mentioned in my homily today, some of the most beautiful
buildings in the world are churches, temples and
mosques as you can see in the pictures on this page. It
seems that human beings have always tried to convey
the beauty of God
through the buildings
they create in God’s
honor. Even in poor
areas, people have
felt compelled to
construct magnificent
houses of worship.
They often made
great personal
sacrifices to provide
the best materials,
craftsmanship and
Shwezigon Paya Temple, Myanmar
energy to build something
beautiful and lasting for their
god. We humans have an innate desire to give God our best. That is one of
the reasons we sometimes use expensive materials for our sacred vessels,
vestments, church furniture and decorations for celebrating Mass and the
sacraments
– we want to give and do our best for God.
St. Basil Cathedral, Moscow
Unfortunately, we can feel so distracted
and busy in our lives that we can end up
giving God our leftovers: our leftover time, energy, talent and money.
The Bible says: “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first
fruits of all your produce” (Proverbs 3:9). It says our “first fruits” not
our second or third or last fruits. So that means we need to give to God
first, before any other person or thing and that we give God the best
we have. I challenge you to ask yourself if you are giving God your best
or not.
For example, do you come to Mass every week or just when you feel
like it? And when you come to Mass do you give God your best effort
to worship him by praying, singing and paying attention or do you just
go through the motions? Do you take at least 15 minutes of your best
Il, Duomo, Milan, Italy
time to pray to God each day or do you just give God the “leftover”
few minutes before you fall asleep at night? Do you give
your best effort to grow in your faith by reading the Bible
or a good Catholic book or magazine or by going to a Bible
study or faith-sharing group? Do you give God your best
by using your God-given talents to serve others? Do you
think and pray ahead of time about what you will give in the
collection when you come to Mass or do you just give God
whatever leftover money you have in your wallet, purse or
pocket?
These are just a few questions that I want to ask to
encourage you to give God what he deserves: our best not
our leftovers. All that we have and all that we are has been
given to us by God. As St. Paul says: “What do you possess
that you have not received? But if you have received it, why are you boasting as if you did not receive it”
(1Corinthians 4:7)? God deserves that we give him back at least something from all he has given to us; and
whatever we do give back to God needs to be our best.

Discipleship
Throughout this year on Tuesday Evenings, “CALLED” will provide a comprehensive
overview of CATHOLIC THEOLOGY that looks at what the Church BELIEVES and how we
are called to LIVE as DISCIPLES of Jesus. Presented by a variety of local Theology Teachers, each Tuesday’s 1-hour presentation will be accompanied by a discussion guide for
groups and individuals and suggestions for further reading and study. The title of each
class and the name of the Teacher will be posted in the bulletin each week. You can

A menudo hacen grandes
tus frutos” (Proverbios
3, 9). Se dice nuestros
“las primicias de los
St. Basil Cathedral, Moscow frutos” no los segundos
o terceros o últimos
frutos.
Shwezigon Paya Temple, Myanmar
bolsillo?
Estas son sólo algunas
preguntas que quiero
hacerte para animarte a
que des a Dios lo que
él merece: lo mejor y
no las sobras. Todo lo
que tenemos y todo lo
que somos Dios nos lo
Il, Duomo, Milan, Italy
ha dado. Como dice San
Crystal Mosque, Terengganu, Malaysia
Pablo: “¿Qué tienes que
no hayas recibido?

Spend Some Time With Jesus
For the duration of our parish retreat, we ask people to
pray for those attending, those on the retreat team, and
all special intentions.
We invite you to spend an hour or more in perpetual
Adoration from Friday, September 30th 6pm through
Sunday, October 2nd 3pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity for family members,
friends, small faith sharing groups, etc to spend time
together with Jesus.
Please call the rectory today to sign up 925-757-4020
