A Note from Principal Hough
We are officially in the last month of school and
there is a lot of excitement in the building as we
kick off our very first Boosterthon Fun Run!
Students will be running 30-35 laps around a
shortened track and will be asking for pledges
for their hard work. If we can get a pledge from
all 50 states, Mrs. Patel and I will spend the
afternoon on the school roof. We are also
asking every student to register at funrun.com
for their first prize. The Boosterthon team
doesn’t only organize the run, they also provide
daily character lessons for our students. We are
excited to have this opportunity and we hope
that you will share this information with family
and friends so they can help support our school.
May 2nd – 6th is Teacher Appreciation Week!
The PTSA is providing our teachers with a
breakfast on Monday, a special note on
Tuesday, a flower on Wednesday, a luncheon
on Thursday (Sponsored by Good Shepherd)
and a sweet treat on Friday. Families may
participate on any day they like.
Our students are participating in a lot of End of
Year assessments from now until June. Please
help us by getting students to school on time
and by making sure they are getting enough
rest. Thanks for your support.
Happy May!

Boosterthon Fun Run!
otras culturas.

We have been reviewing and practicing our skills for the End of Grade Tests! Our students are prepared
and ready to take the test. Some students may get worried before the test. Just remind then to do their
best, get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast. Below are some tips to help with test anxiety.
Hi Pirate Families,
Dear Parents,
21st Century Learning involves teaching our students
about digital literacy. We want to make sure our students
acquire those skills that will help prepare them to be college
and career ready. Part of these lesson involves knowledge
about cyberbullying.
Thank you for all your support with our Service
Learning Projects. The students have learned a lot
about the importance of giving to others. We have
completed three of the four Service Learning
Projects this year. Gray’s, a second grader, favorite
project was Operation Christmas Child because, “I
knew that some family would get Christmas that may
not have before.”
What is Cyber Bullying?
Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using
electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices
and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as
well as communication tools including social media sites, text
messages, chat, and websites.
Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages
or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking
sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake
profiles.
Effects of Cyberbullying
Cell phones and computers themselves are not to
blame for cyberbullying. Social media sites can be used for
positive activities, like connecting kids with friends and family,
helping students with school, and for entertainment. But these
tools can also be used to hurt other people. Whether done in
person or through technology, the effects of bullying are similar.
Kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to:
 Use alcohol and drugs; Skip school; Experience inperson bullying; Be unwilling to attend school; Receive
poor grades; Have lower self-esteem; Have more
health problems
Prevent Cyberbullying
 Know the sites your kids visit and their online activities.
Ask where they’re going, what they’re doing, and who
they’re doing it with.
 Ask to “friend” or “follow” your kids on social media sites
or ask another trusted adult to do so.
 Establish rules at home about technology use.
 Understand school rules and policies involving
technology use.

Our first service learning project was Paws with
Cause. This is a non-profit organization that trains
assistance dogs for people with disabilities. We
collected about 375 items for this organization to use
during their trainings with dogs. During the winter
we collaborated with Operation Christmas Child as
our second service learning project. Operation
Christmas Child is an organization providing aid to
people around the world. We collected 250 boxes to
send to Operation Christmas Child. Some of our
students went to the center in Charlotte to drop off
the boxes. To celebrate World Water Day in April,
our school had a penny drive. We collected about
$581.00 to send to a non-profit organization
providing reliable water to communities in subSaharan Africa. Our last service project is for a local
organization called Safe Alliance. We are collecting
non-perishable items for this organization to provide
for those victimized by violence.
Each one of our grade levels have had an opportunity
to help lead one of our projects and present in our
SAIL Ceremony. . “…Giving is better than receiving
and it made me happy when we gave,” said Nilesh, a
second grader. We hope that these service learning
projects helped students see their part in the
community and world. We want them to understand
that they are important and can make a difference in
the world around them.

See it! Feel it! Hear it! Play it! Number Drummer Live is a one-ofa-kind interactive show that has the entire audience
“drumming up” mathematics for an awesome “surround sound”
musical performance! The show takes participants
through an entertaining and engaging sequence of music and
math skills needed to be a Number Drummer and play in
the show’s final performance. It is an awesome display of math
that is heard as a rhythmic work of art.
